Thanks to a suggestion by RiVAHokie, I'm taking this opportunity to do a quick follow-up on a post I made in the February about the drop in scoring output from the 2010-11 season (70.3ppg) to the 2011-12 season (65.1ppg).  The TL;DR of that post is that team scoring was down, and that the contributions of the leading scorers were down.

I updated that spreadsheet with the end-of-season stats for 2011-12 and added a line for the 2012-13 stats.

What a difference a season makes.

Now that the regular season is done for the Virginia Tech football team, and with only a lower tier bowl remaining, it's time for Hokie Nation to turn its collective attention towards the basketball team.  With their first 5-0 start since 1984 there is a certain amount of buzz surrounding this year's edition of the Hokies on the hardwood.

Bumped to the front. Leaving the stadium I mumbled I was done with neutral site games, but I know I'll be at the next BCS game, and in Atlanta next year. I think Vince sums up how a lot of HokieNation feels in his piece. --Joe

Over the last 13 years I have travelled with the Hokies to 10 neutral site games: 5 bowl games and 5 regular season games. All ten times the Hokies came away with loss. That's 3 Sugar Bowls (Florida State, Auburn, Michigan), 1 Orange Bowl (Kansas), and 1 Chick-fil-A Bowl (Georgia). That's also 3 trips to FedEx Field (Southern Cal, Boise State, Cincinnati), 1 trip to Charlotte (East Carolina), and 1 trip to Atlanta (Alabama).

I've been pondering our offensive woes this season, and wanted to compare this season's scoring to past seasons under Seth Greenberg.  While some of the numbers aren't drastically different, so far this season is the worst overall - I'm sure you're shocked.

In the below spreadsheet I listed the past 9 seasons and included team scoring, our 4 leading scorers each season, their contributions to scoring, and the percentages of their contributions against the team total.  I also included the final four teams from the last 3 seasons as a comparison.

We’re now into the month of November, and ACC teams have 2 or 3 conference games left on their docket.  Virginia Tech and Clemson sit atop their respective divisions, and there’s no doubt that conference officials are hoping they both win out to stage what would be the most significant ACC Championship Game yet.  No one can deny the appeal of a potential rematch between the Tigers and Hokies – Bank of America Stadium would be teeming with fans from both schools and I would expect the TV ratings to beat out previous ACC Championship Games.  It might be one of the most intriguing matchups that weekend …

… if Clemson and Virginia Tech both win out.

So what happens if someone stumbles?

Not a whole lot of time for me this week, as I'm in the San Francisco Bay area for work, so I figured I'd throw out a few quick numbers nuggets to the TKP readers.  First, a look at Virginia Tech's active winning streaks, and then a look BCS Bowl projections as if the season ended today.

The season's first BCS rankings have been released, and I figure if TheKeyPlay.com has any chance to become a dominant force in the college football blogosphere it's about time for us to start talking about bowl games and who's going to square off in the BCS Championship Game.  Let's face it: it's mid-October, we're halfway through the college football season, and the Hokies are bowl-eligible for their 19th straight year.  We're late to the game!  ESPN.com has had their bowl projections going since ... well, I think they've had them since January.

I haven't had a chance to write full a reaction to our win over Miami - mainly due to a busy work week, but partly because I'm working on a post on the upcoming BCS standings for TKP's readers on Sunday.

So, I'd like to at least follow-up last week's win over Miami by putting some of my thoughts down to paper.
