How can we be fixed?

The Cinci game brought out an enormous amount of disgust associated with where our football team has been (hasn't been) headed over the past years. Sure 10 wins has been great and all but we cant seem to out match anyone other than the ACC

Today in Awesome Bud Foster Quotes

“I thought the kid you’re talking to right there played his nuts off,” Foster said of Exum. “You can quote me on that shit too. Played his ass off. Fought his ass off.”

We Are Still Virginia Tech

So many things can be said after this weeked. I let all of my thoughts marinate before writing or tweeting anything on our performance. Everyone seems to be taking this loss extremely hard, harder than I have seen us take a loss in a while. This is what I came up with.

While losing a couple football games is far from a tragedy, this speech embodies everything that it means to be a Hokie. We may get knocked down, but we always get back up. Let's not lose sight of who we really are. We Are Virginia Tech and We Will Prevail. That is all.

Ill Prepared: 1st Quarter Woes

I have had a hard time in trying to pinpoint "that one thing" that is wrong so far in the season.  It was eating at me enough that I did a little stathead-ing trying to figure out where the issues are for the offense.  Here is a look at what I found.  The Hokies are only scoring on 15% of their first quarter drives.  They are only scoring on 30% of the total drives overall.  We have 10 punts vs 3 touchdowns in the first quarter.  I think this speaks to the coaching staff being unable to get the team ready to play.  Its part conservative play calling, part players seeming to be in a daze.  Its a lackadaisical malaise that doesnt seem to wear off until mid second quarter.

Wake the F*ck Up

Every childhood has a Larry, somewhere between Kindergarten and Middle School is that guy floating around who somehow still believes in the Easter Bunny, Santa, and so on. Either it be an absolute denial or the awkwardness of not wanting to be the bearer of bad news to him, Larry somehow walks around like an asshole beleiving in magic way too developmentally late. The Virginia Tech fanbase is that Larry. Somewhere between coveting MIchael Vick as a new phase of college football as we know it and sweeping any record that matters under the rug we have been able to strut along in a fishbowl of ACC championships and ten win seasons like an asshole who thinks they're next best in line for a National Championship.

0-10

Bumped to the front. Leaving the stadium I mumbled I was done with neutral site games, but I know I'll be at the next BCS game, and in Atlanta next year. I think Vince sums up how a lot of HokieNation feels in his piece. --Joe

Over the last 13 years I have travelled with the Hokies to 10 neutral site games: 5 bowl games and 5 regular season games. All ten times the Hokies came away with loss. That's 3 Sugar Bowls (Florida State, Auburn, Michigan), 1 Orange Bowl (Kansas), and 1 Chick-fil-A Bowl (Georgia). That's also 3 trips to FedEx Field (Southern Cal, Boise State, Cincinnati), 1 trip to Charlotte (East Carolina), and 1 trip to Atlanta (Alabama).

Bowl Streak Breakdown and perspective

Losses are a tough pill to follow.  And our beloved football team has done more of it lately than we really care to see.  That's tells me, that overall, we must have a pretty good thing going.  Othen than one of the National Brands that has a long history of winning National Titles, is there any other program you'd rather trade places with? Is firing Beamer really the answer? And do we really want to handle it the way FSU handled it? At some level doesn't Beamer deserve better than that? He built a brand where one didn't exist.  Does anyone realize how many top notch coaches respect this program and Frank Beamer himself?  We all saw what happened to Kansas St. with Bill Snyder retired.

State of Hokie Nation

It took me until today to fully realize the importance of last season’s game against Arkansas State. The Hokies were coming off an uncomfortably close 17-10 win against East Carolina on the road and rookie quarterback Logan Thomas went 8-of-20 for 91 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

The Red Wolves were 1-1 when they came to Blacksburg having blown out Memphis but got pushed around by Illinois 33-15.

Cincinnati Football Primer, Photo Edition

Weeks that follow Hokie victories always seem to be more upbeat. There were signs of encouragement in Tech's shutout victory over Bowling Green, but the season marches on. This week's opponent is familair to Hokie fans: the Cincinnati Bearcats. In 2006, Tech beat UC 29-13 behind a 170-yard effort by Brandon Ore at Lane Stadium. More notably, the two schools met in the 2008 Orange Bowl.

The Bearcats were able to build on the success of that 2008 season the following year, reeling off twelve straight victories, winning the Big East, and climbing to a #5 ranking. A second consecutive BCS berth was claimed, although the results were similar: Cincinnati lost 51-24 to Florida.

Bowling Green Football Primer, Photo Edition

This week, the Hokies look to rebound from their loss by taking on Bowling Green State University. The Falcons currently sit at 1-2, but have valuable road expereince in big time environments, as they started the season at the Swamp (a 27-14 defeat).

BGSU is coming off a rough 27-15 rivalry loss to Toledo. The Falcons and the Rockets play for the Battle of I-75 Trophy (sometimes referred to as the Peace Pipe) each year. Unfortunately, the Falcons had not claimed a victory in the series since 2009.

The Stages of a Bad Loss

Someone once said "losing is like dying, you can't undo either one". Ok, I made that up. Albeit outlandish, the 5 stages of grief or loss is a real phenomenon that many eventually go through. For our purposes it will pertain to getting over what transpired Saturday. Through satire and sarcasm hopefully we can each traverse these steps together only to arrive rejuvinated next weekend against Bowling Green.

Bounce Back

Editor's Note: I'm still bummed over the loss, but there's still a long season in front of us. Mikey's piece put that into perspective for me. Bumped to the front. --Joe

Pittsburgh Football Primer, Photo Edition

Get ready y'all, here comes a non-conference game with a familiar flair! Our opponent this week is the Pitt Panthers, a team that can claim the unique distinction of being both a former Big East and future ACC rival (HOORAY REALIGNMENT!). Regardless of conference affiliation, Pitt recently has been known as a coaching abyss. Going into the season, there seemed to be a good amount of optimism for the Panthers in what was considered a wide-open Big East race. Add that to the fact that an experienced quarterback (Tino Sunseri) was returning, and you have the makings of true darkhouse candidate.

Ain't Got Much Back

Editor's Note: Beau brings up a few good points. What's the state of the running game? And where is it going? Is/will there be a feature back? A couple of quick stats, Tech is tied 74th nationally in rushing yards per game (141.50). No Hokie has netted more than 100 yards this season (Holmes is the leader with 94, Coleman second with 54, Marcus Davis third with 48). --Joe

RV Tailgating in Pitt Saturday the 15th???

Anyone else taking an RV into Pitt next weekend? I have searched a bunch of Pitt Football sites plus ALCO parking sites and cannot get info on where RV parking is in and around Heinz Field.
We are Hokies coming from Toronto and would like to be around fellow fans and we've got BOARDS!!

Austin Peay Football Primer, Photo Edition

The Hokies' oppenent on this short week (THANKX WEAVER) are the Governors of Austin Peay State University. For those asking, "Peay" is pronouced with a long 'e.' This has led the student body to adopt one of the more grandiose cheers in intercollegiate sports.

Last season the Governors played two FBS opponents, losing by a combined score of 99-16. Why is this significant? Memphis - widely regarded as the worse team in college footbal in 2011, was one of those two teams. Could this perhaps be the signs of bigger things to come for APSU?

Bring In The Young Guns

I'm not looking past Austin Piss by any means as I still think about the reoccuring nightmare of my JMU girlfriend standing beside me as we shat the bed a couple years ago.  Lets assume however that we are up 30ish by half or the end of third quarter.  This in my opinion will be a good opportunity to see who the coaches actually have plans for redshirting and who they want to get reps in hopes of them contributing this season or early next.  I would personally love to see Edmunds and Stanford as well as some of the younger defensive guys like Manning play a quarter but I just don't know that the coaches have it in em just yet.  Would love to know other opinions on whether or not these guys should get reps in these types of games or if th
