The 2014 Virginia Tech football schedule has been released. Thursday night football will once again happen in Blacksburg, and all is right with the world. Spoiler alert, there are two weekday games scheduled in the 'Burg.

Aug. 30: William & Mary — Tech opens with a cupcake. The emphasis is on cake. This is the correct decision as no form of cake can be wrong.

Sept. 6: at Ohio State — Tech will be a decided underdog, but home-and-homes between major programs make college football fun.

Sept. 13 East Carolina — "What division are they again? They're not in the ACC... But we play them every year." Everyone has had more than enough time to express their thoughts on this series, myself included. So I'm going to use this space to note my brother is an asshole for getting married this weekend. FALL WEDDINGS ARE WRONG, STEVE. (Congratulations though!)

Sept. 20 Georgia Tech — Honestly, anything is better than playing the Bees in Atlanta on a short week.

Sept. 27 Western Michigan — Resistant to college football's parity movement.

Oct. 4 at North Carolina — UNC won six of their final seven games. The lone loss was against eventual division winner Duke. ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach ranked the Heels No. 16 in his Way-Too-Early Top 25 and noted, "The Tar Heels were one of the country's youngest teams this past season, starting 10 freshmen and sophomores on offense and defense, and they should begin to benefit from their early lumps in coach Larry Fedora's tenure."

Oct. 16 at Pittsburgh (THURSDAY) — I'm already irrationally worried about this game because...

Oct. 23 Miami (THURSDAY) — OK. It's Miami, at home, on a Thursday night. I'm already amped. However, I was hoping Boston College would be slotted here. That way there's one guaranteed primetime game, with a better chance to get a second, or at the very least avoid a nooner. Historically speaking, Hokies–Hurricanes gets a 3:30 or better kickoff.

(Sidebar, the outcome of the pair of Thursday night games may very well determine whether or not Tech earns a trip to Charlotte.)

Nov. 1 Boston College — A few extra days rest before playing an extremely physical Eagles squad. That's a good thing.

Nov. 15 at Duke — "A bye week? Before Duke... What a waste. Thanks, ACC!" Those are things we would have said two years ago.

Nov. 22 at Wake Forest — If this was an annual series, we'd be calling BB&T Field Lane Stadium South. It's a 2 hour drive, so students you're basically getting another home game. Lucky you.

Nov. 28 Virginia (FRIDAY) — There's already a healthy discussion happening regarding the merits of Friday football in the 'Burg. Remember, per the league's media deal with ESPN, the ACC is obligated to play Friday football.

Per the extension, ESPN has the right to televise three Friday ACC football contests annually which will include a standing commitment from Boston College and Syracuse to each host one game as well as an afternoon or evening game on Thanksgiving Friday.

What remains to be seen is if the game will be at night. It's a good thing anytime a program can get national exposure. However, traveling the day after Thanksgiving might be tough for some folks, and it's one less day of rest before rivalry game. The Decade of Dominance happened, but the last two contests with the 'Hoos weren't blowouts.

Dec. 6 ACC Championship (CHARLOTTE) —

I don't have any major complaints with this schedule. Certainly there's nothing egregious like last year's lack of a Thursday night game, back-to-back trips in back-to-back seasons to Boston College and Miami, or a date with Chop Block Tech on the road after 5 days of rest. If I wanted to nitpick, it's a bummer there are no Saturday home games in October. Tailgating weather doesn't get any more beautiful in Blacksburg, but there could be worse alternatives than short road trips to Pitt and UNC.
