CBSSports.com Report: Georgia Tech Will Vacate 2009 ACC Title

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke this news at 9:22 AM this morning.

The NCAA will announce the results of an investigation into alleged violations committed by Georgia Tech's football program at 3 p.m. today.

The alleged violations occurred within the past several years. The NCAA considers the violations, which included improper benefits, minor. However, Tech allegedly didn't cooperate with the investigators as enthusiastically as the NCAA would have liked. A phone conference is scheduled with Dennis Thomas, the chair of the NCAA's infractions committee, at 3 p.m. Georgia Tech President Dr. G.P. "Bud" Peterson and Athletic Director Dan Radakovich will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m.

And now according to CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy the Wreck will vacate the 2009 ACC Championship.

The school and NCAA will announce the Yellow Jackets' NCAA penalties and infractions later this afternoon.

Georgia Tech will also vacate other wins, besides the ACC title game, during the 2009 season, a source said.

Georgia Tech's penalties include using ineligible student athletes during the 2009 season. Two of those student athletes involved are former wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and defensive back Morgan Burnett. Thomas was a first round pick in the 2010 NFL draft and Burnett was a third-round selection.

In 2009, Georgia Tech defeated Clemson 39-34 in the ACC championship game in Tampa, Fla., and then ended the season with a 24-14 loss to Iowa in the Orange Bowl.

If that's the extent of the punishment, then I don't think it's anything more than a slap on the wrist. Everyone, well OK maybe a small number of ACC fans, saw them win the games on the field and the Championship. You can't vacate memories. If there's no loss of scholarships, a bowl ban or something else to impact the future of GT football, for me it's not that big of a deal moving forward. And honestly, the punishment probably fits the crime.

Now, who would have thought we would have beat Clemson?

Update: It's official, among other penalties GT vacates the 2009 ACC Championship, is fined $100,000 and is on four years probation.
