2017 DE Zion DeBose Commits to the Hokies

The Hokies had to wait just a few days more to add another DE to their 2017 class.

[@Zion_LifeGoesOn]

Signing day may be in the rearview mirror, but the Hokies have added one more athlete to their 2017 class.

2017 DE Zion DeBose of Spencer, N.C.'s North Rowan HS committed to Tech in a ceremony at his high school Friday, becoming the 27th prospect to pledge to the Hokies this cycle, according to Mike London of the Salisbury Post.

DeBose, who's rated a 3-star prospect by the 247Sports composite rankings, chose Tech over Missouri, Illinois and Pittsburgh.

The DE originally committed to Appalachian State back in July, but he maintained his interest in VT, visiting for the ECU game in September. He de-committed shortly afterward, and he stayed in constant contact with DL coach Charley Wiles, though Tech only offered him right before Christmas.

"He told me that him and the defensive staff have been watching me my whole senior year, and they've just been watching how great I've been doing and how dominant I've been," DeBose previously told The Key Play. "And they say that's what they've been looking for, for somebody who they want to come up and play for them at Virginia Tech and they pulled the trigger. They told me they've been watching me and they're really excited about how I play the game and how I fit their program and stuff like that."

DeBose took an official visit to Tech on Jan. 27, his final such trip after visits to his other top schools.

But he decided not to make his final decision until now so he could provide a special surprise for his mom's birthday.

"I honestly feel like this is probably my last time spending time with her for her birthday before I go off to college for the next four years, because I won't be home too much," DeBose said. "So I wanted to make it special for her before I end up going off to school."

With how high French is on this guy, I can't wait to see him in the O&M.

If French loves this kid, then that's enough for me. Welcome to the Terror Dome Mr. DeBose.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

CHOO CHOO! ALL ABOARD THE D LINE!

Believe his recruiting ranking was negatively affected by his level of competition. Truly think this kid will be special and has chance to see the field in the near future. Tremendous fundamentally.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

and size- a little less wingspan and size than the five star types. But, in this scheme, this kid can play. 20 sacks, 27.5 TFLs. For a comparison (I know, not a pure apples to apples), Garbutt had 7 sacks and 7 TFLs.

garbutt also seemed to focus much more on offense his senior season. his highlight real is almost exclusively at WR.

Ladies and Gentlemen...we got him.

I wish I could give you more legs for this!

They must have hired him based on his recruiting correspondence. "You" think?

This is the player I wanted the most. Huge get for us.

You have a good eye, sir. I see Orion Martin/Darryl Tapp type written all over him. His first step isn't electric, but his leverage and ability to redirect is so good. When you add in how explosive he is with his hips to uncoil and deliver a blow, the kid could be really damn good.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Same to you.

Like you said, his leverage and redirect is so good... all of his movement is efficient and he never false steps. It really shows how natural of an athlete he is.

I think one of his strongest abilities is his reaction time. His reaction to the snap is about as good as it gets and it allows him to win initially pretty often. When he doesn't win right off the line he still has good hands to disengage and control blockers.

really to both of you, what does he need to focus on between now and fall camp...upper body strength to better shed blocks?

We can just play 4 ends on the d-line, right? Debose, Garbutt, Porcher, Proctor?

Kidding aside, I'm pumped to watch this kid in orange and maroon. Big get.

In seriousness, we could definitely do something along these lines on third and long to help rest Walker and Settle a little extra. Even though, I do love both of those guys penetrating ability.

Fuck Pat Narduzzi!

Score 1 for the good guys.

What's
Important
Now

Nardouche was after 3 of the 4 DE's that we landed, so score 3 for the good guys.

Looks like they may have......pushed off his recruiting

It's OK - I'm half asian

Any and all Ric Flair references get a leg!

From the Bay State to Old Dominion. The coast of New England to the mountains of Appalachia. LETS GO...HOKIES!

Can imagine French if Wiles says he's not "twitchy" enough for DE and tried to move him inside?

Sounds like the kid has his head on straight too, thinking about his family and making it special for them as well as him.

Welcome to Hokie Nation! Let's bring back the Terror Dome!

Yup. Comes from a really grounded family and has his head on straight. Upstanding young man, that Zion. A real Hokie type guy.

so glad we hit on one of french's steal candidates

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

For those younger Hokies...this is the Terror Dome.

Boy-o do miss watching him play.

A couple of things about that game...it was the first true Thursday Night game in Blacksburg. I remember running back to Pritchard after the game and everyone was so pumped. Secondly, when I think of VT those are the jerseys.

Loved Corey Moore and how fast he was off the line. The guy was 6' tall and played like a beast. Those were great days when CBF would load 8-9 in the box and dare you run and force you to throw. The D was so fast and twitchy that opposing QBs barely had time to react. Oh my, have times and styles changed.

Let's Go

HOKIES

Well I went to haul some firewood and missed being the first "Fuck Pat Narduzzi"!

There can never be enough.

Sweet way to end the week. Seems like a great addition for us....as well as the fact that French is really high on him and how he can work in our system....if French likey, me likey.

Also - cant give enough props to French for all the hard work he's done this week to give us mortals such valuable analysis on these recruits (and throughout the year with all his game film breakdown, etc.). I for one am much more knowledgeable about what I'm seeing on every gameday purely because of French.

Thank you, good sir. Beers are on me if we should ever cross paths.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I thought we were 25 on Tuesday.

We were.

yes we were so WTF?

Click for President

We dropped as far as #30 by that nightime with late day announcements

we held at 25. zion didn't move the rankings much.

So I went to check out the Pitt message boards on the Panther Lair and WOW are they salty. After one guy accused DeBose of trying to generate "excitement and drama" (obviously he doesn't know why DeBose actually waited to commit) another guy responded with one of the dumbest things I have read in a long time when he said...

VT coach is probably trying to whore the kid out.

VT's HC is a tool, his sideline was a joke.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

When I read that last comment on their board, I read it like Yoda speak, to mean

I wish I could say, "VT's HC is a tool, his sideline was a joke"

Meanwhile when someone commits somewhere other than VT here, we accuse them of impropriety benefits. To each their own!

Yes, it is pretty comical, every time we lose a commit there is at least one comment about a check or the like.

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I like this guy...lets get to work boys

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Oh yeah, I love this guy's game. Very explosive, and on every down in the highlight video he was playing like he had something to prove. And I watched DeBose's highlight video right after watching the Corey Moore "Terror Dome" video posted above.

Narduzzi has had it up to here with Tech taking his DE recruits and Tech's WR's pushing off.

"Thanks to Virginia Tech, the only DE's I was able to recruit for Pitt were no taller than this!"

I think we have a new meme thread starting!

We put the K in Kwality

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

In a few years.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

I just watched his tape for the first time in a while, and one thing that jumps out at me is how "ambidextrous" he is. His ability to put either hand down from either DE spot is huge value-added.

Would love a French take on this - I don't recall seeing a DE on tape playing both ends so proficiently. I'm sure he'll find a side that he/Wiles favors, but his versatility feels like one part of his game that we aren't talking about enough.

Kid is a monster. Can't wait to have him.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

So my boss tells us in our staff meeting that we're getting an intern for a few hours a week this spring. He's coming from North Rowan HS. None other than Zion DeBose.

My first question will be, So what's Narduzzi really like?

seriously? are you a defensive line stance consultancy?

"...sticks and stones may break my bones but I'm gonna kick you repeatedly in the balls Gardoki!"

You should send him on a consultation to Blacksburg to meet up with a man named Hilgart for the summer.

I bet Nardouchey was problably more like Narschmoozy when recruiting players

Like a used car salesman, is my guess.

That mean there's a chance we have a geography Hokie on the team?

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used."

Zion stopped by today to sign his paperwork for his internship. He said he's really anxious to get to Blacksburg and start working to get on the field. He's going to need some Hilgartification, but once that takes places he's going to have some inertia behind him when he puts QBs into the dirt.

Yea, that's great. But we want to know about his corporate office skills. How good is at preparing the TPS reports? Does he put on a cover letter?

Does he have a favorite stapler?

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate

Is it football season yet?

I hope that he's their office's Terry Tate

Does he like cake or pie?

Ya know, when a man works hard his entire life enduring hundreds of ladies, many of whom he does not even remember you'd like to think that at the end of the day he will be given a lot of money, without having had to earn it.

Cobbler.

I look forward to reporting back. I have a feeling he's gonna be all, "I don't do that stuff. It only slows you down."

Really nice kid though. Was very appreciative of the opportunity to make sure he wants to be an engineer and get some experience before even starting college.

you get to ask him what his impression of Pat Narduzzi was?

Not yet. He was just in to sign his paperwork and get a tour. HR was with him so I kept it introductory and pleasant. I did make it clear that we were happy to have him as an intern and as member of Hokie Nation. Real excited to see him in O&M.
