Buzzketball vs. Virginia Photo Gallery - On the Floor For a Court Rush

The Hokies knocked off a ranked Hoo team for the second straight year in Cassell.

[Mark Umansky]

Hello everyone, the Hokies' 80-78 double overtime win over the Cavaliers provided the first photo gallery story of the new year for me. And there's lots to get through.

Cassell was a pit of madness this past weekend when the Hoos came to town, in large part to some very crazy fans filling the seats.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Cassell is a better home court/field advantage when it's packed than Lane is.

And now for some highlights.

UVa Man Bun Bro Kyle Guy always seemed to have an.... odd expression on his face whenever I took a photo.

The HokieBird got in on the action with the High Techs during a media timeout.

Seth Allen spotted Tony Bennett sneaking in a timeout-ish playcall meeting while the refs were discussing a foul call and decided to pay a learning visit.

(Buzz waved Seth off when he saw what was happening, nice guy.)

Speaking of Buzz, he got a little pumped up in the second half when the Hokies started to tighten things up.

Frank got in on the action at halftime, making a personal sales pitch for joining the Hokie Club. He looks like a man who is definitely enjoying retirement, in my opinion.

This game featured a lot of intensity on both sides, which is very evident here, with Justin Robinson fighting off London Perrantes (and getting screened perfectly by Zach LeDay for his troubles):

My favorite two shots of the night, first, a very packed Cassell makes for a great backdrop on wide shots.

Second favorite, this one was after Bibbs hit his circus shot while drawing a foul, he got some high fives in from the nice court side seats along the sideline. Something about the way the lighting hits his name on his jersey hits all the marks for me.

Getting into overtime, we get to The Layup That Never Was, or "How I learned to love the rolling coefficient of friction". Always worth a closer look for the where's waldo factor in the fans too.

Something that fellow TKP photographer Michael Shroyer and I noticed, the lighting in Cassell that night seemed brighter than usual. Typically we have our settings fairly dialed in by this point in the year and rarely change them, but highlights were on the verge of being blown out during this game. Can't complain about extra brightness, though.

Finally, we get to the endgame. Seth Allen makes just about everyone in the building overshoot him on a little jump step, then lobs it in with the left.

Buzzer sounds, and we're off sprinting to my second photographing of a court rush in Cassell. I was working with only one camera body that night (due to some unforeseen equipment losses that occurred at work), so I had to quickly swap on my wide lens to capture the chaos.

Through everything, Buzz quietly got through the handshake line, which was well protected from the mass of students.

The cheerleaders and High Techs formed somewhat of a wall between the rest of the court and the students.

Students, for the most part, respected the barrier.

Behind the barrier was quite a crush of students jumping up and down to Enter Sandman.

Seth Allen snuck off to get his 5 minutes of ESPN face time.

Spotted in the crowd, former Virginia Tech basketball players Paul Debnam and Dorenzo Hudson managed to make their way onto the court.

Finally, as the crowd started to thin a little, it was time to document the spoils of victory.
