Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina Photo Gallery - One-Thousand Word Looks at a Blowout

A photo recap of Virginia Tech taking UNC to the bright and sunny woodshed, plus a Greg Stroman punt return touchdown special feature.

Now that you all have digested how the Hokies dismantled the Tar Heels 59-7, here's a glimpse at how things appeared through the lens last Saturday.

First things first, Growley II picked the absolute best spot possible to wait for the Corps to start marching into lane before the game. The light filters right through a gap in the cadets and isolates him away from the dark uniforms and shadows perfectly.

Orange effect tends to produce really interesting backgrounds, especially for daytime games, which makes things a little more unique than the usual game.

Things that don't show up on television very well: Trevon Hill's shiny gold teeth after a sack.

Speaking of sacks, the Hokies managed to get quite a few, even some.... subtle holds.

The Hokies were so good at pinning UNC against their own goal line, that it was very easy to get shots of the defense eyeing up (literally) the Tar Heel offensive look before the snap. Also, you know Bud was having a good day when the linebackers are playing right at the line of scrimmage before the snap.

In fact, the Hokies were so good the first three quarters, that I climbed up to the top of the East stands for half of the fourth quarter to watch the sunset come in, and I'm really glad that I did. I made probably 200 frames up there and will probably be playing with the edits on them here and there for weeks. This frame below was about a 10 minute quick edit job. My only complaint is that the Hokies were so good that a lot of folks left early to resume their tailgates and watch the sunset with a beer in hand. (Can't blame them, couldn't have been more perfect outside that evening.)

Finally, I'm going to focus on one play in detail, Greg Stroman's punt return touchdown.

We're going to start with Greg at about the 20 yard line, after he's doubled back and reversed the field a bit. If you look at the cheerleader in the background, he's already calling touchdown. Smart guy.

Fast forward a few dozen yards, Greg hits UNC punter Tom Sheldon with the power bobblehead fake. Offensive line coach Vance Vice is chilling on the sideline already calling for an extra point, apparently.

The head fake works, and Greg is almost home free. Offensive lineman Kyle Chung is already calling a touchdown, while fans in row A are hanging on for dear life.

UNC's punter completes the slow motion Australian face plant as CJF wisely grabs hold of his headset before starting his sprint down the sideline to pace Greg for 20 yards or so. Bud Foster doesn't so much as crack a smirk.

Pulling the frame up a bit and we see a significant portion of the crowd and sideline helpfully giving Greg directions to the correct end zone. Just in case, you know.

Finally, we end on this frame. In row A, an entire row of recruits getting a taste of BeamerBall in person on their official visits. On the sideline, strength and conditioning coach Ben Hilgart .... well looking like how a strength and conditioning coach should look like. In the center, Hokiesports and IMG radio sideline reporter Andrew Allegretta looking about as calm and cool as one can while wearing maroon and orange on the sidelines during a 91-yard punt return touchdown.
