2019 Winter Fishing Report Discussion Thread II

After 600 comments the old thread stopped loading on my phone so I figured I'd go ahead and start a new on cause I had a fantastic day. Not fishing but in finding deals.

Academy has a sale going on right now. GO to it. Soft plastics for pennies, terminal tackle for pennies, deep cycle batteries for $20.

This haul cost me $98 after tax....

Also this showed up in the mail. It cost more than $98

To clarify, that's $98 with the battery and the Kershaw which were $20 each.

Great haul! Too bad there aren't any in VA.

Ooops didn't realize that. So this is now a rub it in yall's face thread.

Well played heuplek. I was online searching like crazy for those deals on the Gulp and Gamakatsu's. :) I did stumble on a nice pair of replacement boots for the ones I had to retire yesterday, at least.

Hokie fan | W&M grad

Bought every pack of gamakatsu in the bin. $1 a pack for weighted keel 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, and 7/0

That Allen reel is beautiful what size did you get?

Girlfriend bought me an orvis fishing shirt that fits great can't wait to use it this year

Finally got an alpha 3, got a very lightly used one for 110$ so now I have one I can use and that way I can keep my sage in freshwater and use this for the rest

Wow, that's a haul. I'd almost travel to find one of those stores for a decent deal on Gulp. Never on sale, never discounted less than Wallyworld sells it. Nice knife, too.

Not many flip deals had a couple of the recharge containers but if like 2.5" kicker shads. I personally don't like fishing stuff that anal because then I have to change a while rig out... And pinfish

do you ever catch anything worth keeping when pinfish are around? If I'm in pinfish, I leave...which may be a mistake.

Occasionally is hard to keep and confidence though they absolutely destroy whatever you put in the water... If I'm around a lot of them I just cast net em for bait.

Naw, I have a buddy who'll fish the 3", but it's the 4'' swimming mullet for me. Shrimp-wise, I'll go to 3'' because of the bulk of the body, but if the fish are sizable, I go bigger with them as well.
I'd say screw pinfish, but one time in Fla with a rusty spike hole in my left foot, I was dock restricted for almost a week and the strangers I was staying with set me up for fishing behind their trailer. Pinfish was all there was, and I ended up eating them four or five times that week. I was poor as a church mouse and pissed off from the spiking. The folks I was staying with met me bloody on the road to find a doctor and just took me in for a while, and I felt like I needed to get my own grub. Oh well.

so, what does a pinfish taste like...bloody/oily; or decent, just tiny?

edit: better or worse than McD's filet-o-fish

Guessing on appearance alone I'd take the under

The only thing I have seen eat one was a turn around bluefish (as in nothing cool likes pinfish so I am going to take this bluefish that ate the pinfish and use it as my live bait.) However, I have heard they are money amberjack bait.

I've heard they are good grouper bait too.

I've heard reds love them.

You know what really like them? Loons.

Loons - not just a clever name

Reds love them. Next to mullet I'm dumping pinfish in the live well.

Do you trim the dorsal fin off of them when using them for reds?

Depends on their size, the bigger ones yes, the smaller ones I just clip the tail so they don't go swimming into an oyster bed.

I used to rig 6-8 inch mullet on a Carolina Rig in Charleston and clip the tail fin off. They hated being on the bottom and would really try to swim away fast and you could feel them shaking on your line. So could the giant redfish and I got several sleigh rides out of that tactic

Oh yeah, I do that with every mullet, even if I have them rigged on a cork they go into full on panic mode. The only issue I have with it is the amount of blood that goes everywhere.

LOL sounds like you're cuttin' it awfully close. I do just the fin

might be the best big trout bait there is

Still better than sandperch

Naw, man. They're good to eat, just too small to be worth cleaning, usually. I didn't filet them, just cleaned, scaled and cut of the head, cornmeal and fried whole. Taste right along the same as most panfish like spot and whiting and the rest. I was poor as a church mouse, and they tasted damn good when I was hongry as a bar.

What is wrong here? My Rapala jerk bait lost it's rear hook. Now I have caught many fish with this and most of them big but it failed me this morning. I got the bass up to the rip rap and was reaching to lip her then this happened. I'm guessing 5-6 pounds. In a month she'll be 7-8. Spring is coming! Tight lines!

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I've never seen a Rapala do that. Did the wire pull out?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

Yes it did. I have had many Rapala lips fall off but never a hook! And BTW suspending Rapalas are not great at; well, suspending. And here is your most awesome image of the day.

"Hey Bud, you wont have to hold the opponent to 17 points anymore."

I've had this happen to a few of my rapala's, usually once they've been beat up some the wire eventually pulls through the seam. PS a lot of suspending baits will suspend in a certain water temp so during different times of the year you can have different results with how "suspending" a bait is.

Ive had the wire hooks fall out before. Most commonly on Rapala crankbaits the lips usually fall off after a few hard days of chucking them I have never had one last a full year of use.

2 things that were definitely going to happen on a New small mouth trip with hard baits for me were: Losing one Rapala DT4/6 lip and breaking a KVD squarebill treble. I eventually decided to change those out right out of the package.

This is all news to me, I've never ever had a Rapala fail me in any way.

It's also been a LONG time since I fished one... maybe I'll rig one up on the 7 weight for the hell of it.

Fishing in ponds I've never had one break but in the river they break alot it's aggravating to have that fail it alot before the hooks even dull to have the bill snap off

You might be joking, but my favorite childhood Rapala tactic, cast-wait-pop-wait-pop-reel in fish, wouldn't be too hard to do with a fly rod. I think I'll try it this summer.

I wasn't really joking but I'm not sure I could live with myself. Black over gold Rapala with the same retrieve you mentioned caught more bass than I could count when I was a kid. Guess I need to make an exact fly replica

Shoutout to IFish for the reel again, met up with him yesterday. Still an unbelievably nice gesture, it will be put to good use this spring!

Thanks for coming by to get it. We were already in tailgate mode for the GT game and it was nice not to have to drive around to meet you. I do wish I could have had more time so we could have visited a bit and I'da boughten ya a brewski and told you way too many New River stories, but it is always good to put a face to a name, especially for the TKP fishing thread community. Many of us are gradually getting to know each other and it makes me feel good to have been able to pass along gear to you younger folks. Again BornHokie, it was my pleasure. Hope it serves you well, and contact me anytime you might have some questions about fishing the New that I may be able to answer. My 26 years fishing it taught me a ton.

Girlfriend knows I'm not one for candy so got me a new orvis fishing shirt and an alpha 3 reel, I used to not like Valentine's but I'm warming to it now

Man I wish Allen would put alpha 3 logo on both sides of the rod hilt piece

Find one that loves fishing more than you and I garuntee life will be at it's best. Never thought I'd be in a relationship with someone who would drag me out of bead in the morning to go fishing every chance we get.

Now my 8 wt setup is complete time to get the 5/6 setup

Haha I've dated 'em all man. Lots of "ones." Good one, bad one, fun one, boring one, crazy one, cool one, psycho one, lame one, freaky one, smart one, "the" one.... Several of them are now into fly fishing because of me and a few of them really love it. The most recent girl I seriously dated bought me a $700 Mauser fly rod. It was an incredible gift. The current one I've been talking to is @barbieonthefly on instagram. She sure as hell loves fly fishing more than me.

I'm too picky and too selfish and overall I'm just not too worried about it... one of these days I may settle down.

one of these days I may settle down

I tell myself this regularly then realize all my friends that have gone that way don't have boats or near as much time as I do. Call it selfish but I like my time.

Totally agree!

Now me, I have a different take on this subject. Having a life partner (going on 47 years for me) is one of the most important things in the world to me, no doubt, but one of the things that has kept us together for so long is the ability to have separate interests, loves and hobbies to pursue. Yes, we spend an awful lot of time together, but fishing is something she just doesn't have an interest in. I, for one, am glad of that. Now, my wife understands my need to fish as built in and of great importance to my well being, so that helps a lot. No, I don't have the boat I might have (nor the debt), and I don't take off for the Gulf every winter for reds, or to New Zealand for big trout, but if I need it, I get it, and if I really want to go, I go. But, the fact of the matter is, if you are going to get married, you HAVE to be willing to compromise, regardless of the issue, and for me, the association makes my life a lot better than the total freedom to do as I selfishly choose would do. Just me, though.

I am a lucky guy. I would be luckier if I shut up enough while she fishes so she would enjoy going anymore. I fish for fun. She says "it's serious business."

*thinking to myself* - I am a lucky guy. I still remember when I was dating my wife. Her favorite meal was a cheeseburger and a coke (low maintenance + drama), and we'd go down the James near Scottsville every other weekend. She didn't care for the fishing, but she enjoyed paddling the canoe around and reading her books, so it worked out perfectly - I fished and she enjoyed being out on the water and in nature. Twelve years later, we've got 3 awesome kids and a boat. I don't fish as much as I used to, for sure, but it's a darn good life.

Well said, Scott.

Gonna be sketching up and trying to build a boat rack for the truck bed for the upcoming year hoping to make it adjustable and stowable to some extent

This weekend is looking like a good weekend to make some soft plastics and tie a few flies even

weather is beautiful here; so nice in fact that I'll spend ALL of it working on finishing the tile on the deck...grrrr

While I know politics and TKP don't mix, I know that flyguy and I have occasionally railed against Dominion and their power and actions to the detriment of our resources, I have to throw this in. While visiting my Hokie buds this week, I stayed with a friend whose entire property in Newport was bisected by the latest pipeline debacle. The destruction of a unique property was heartbreaking. Hundreds of trees he planted 50 years ago to buffer his place from the noise and traffic of 460 were taken out, leaving noise and unsightly views and passing just over a hundred feet from the barn he turned into a great house, also over the last 50 years. All of this eminent domain stealing of his land, against his will, for the profit of the company and no benefit to the public. To also see what they've run into with the steepness and rocky nature of those mountains should be criminal. Add in that a rupture and explosion of the line would obliterate his house and anyone in it... I could go on, but I'll end this rant here.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

What a shame.

I hate Dominion with ever fiber of my being. I've said some pretty terrible stuff about that company and I don't regret one word of it. I'll continue to blast them as much as I possibly can.
