ESPN Gives Us a "B" for NSD

The Hokies took a step back on the field in 2018 but started signing day 2019 with a bang, flipping No. 72 overall Doug Nester from Ohio State. Replenishing the wide receiver position was crucial in this cycle, and the staff responded with ESPN 300 WR Jacoby Pinckney, ESPN 300 ATH Jaden Payoute and North Carolina three-star Elijah Bowick. Four-star RB Keshawn King is a good bet to be a multiyear starter in Blacksburg, and three-star Tahj Gary is a solid downhill back. ESPN 300 OG Bryan Hudson and three-star OG Jesse Hanson also fill key needs. In the secondary, four-star S/CB Nyquee Hawkins is a nice signing out of New Jersey, as is four-star S J.R. Walker out of the Tar Heel State. Three-star defensive tackle Norell Pollard is the sleeper in the class. Juco OLB Amare Barno and DT Dashawn Crawford are expected to push for playing time right away. The QB in the class is senior riser Knox Kadum out of the Peach State.

It kind of seems the grade system is pretty simplistic, and based entirely on the national ranking. Which is to say I'm not sure what value the grade has that national ranking doesn't already tell us?

Because ESPN knows-

1) College football
2) throw shit on the wall
3) profit

The Cup is going nowhere Mikey!

Okay Cool.
Hook 'Em

I give ESPN and F for continuing to employ Dick Vitale yet firing Adnan Virk.

Stephen A. Smith some how has a job.

Terrible isn't he.

Overheard as Duke assistant coaches took elevator down from press box: “Guys, they stopped the run with a three-man front.” - David Teel Tweet 2018

There's that ESPN 300 plug again.

I'm not into being judged by an organization based on how I measure up to that organization's own rankings.

It's like, "ME ESPN. ESPN 300 good. You have ESPN 300. You good".

IDK, I'll pass. LOL.

Translation:
Fornicate ESPN 300
Drink beer.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

They sure don't stick their necks out, do they?

ESPN: "We'll rate all the current P5 programs' recruiting, by using the 247 rankings, and converting from their rankings to a letter format within their conference."

Nice job.

I get that ESPN is the power house of sports but do they actually do anything? This was a take the 24/7 rating and put it into a letter article. They fired the bit of talent they do have and they still have Steven a Smith who recently said Dwayne Haskins is more of a runner than a thrower.

Well you see yelling at each other sells. Analysts are too quiet to have a job at ESPN. Every show is about who can yell over other people the best because THATS WHAT EVERY ONE WANTS. KEEP THOSE NERDS OUT OF SPORTS. ITS FOR MEN THAT YELL. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE COACHES MOLDING YOUNG MEN BY TEACHING THEY WANT THE YELLING AT YOUNG MEN BECAUSE NEGATIVE REENFORCEMENT HAS PROVEN TO BE THE BEST AS LONG AS YOU IGNORE THE NERD STUDIES!

Terrible list. It would've been more interesting if they graded based on needs and targets, not just recruiting ranking.

Twitter me

Sure, but that would have required actual analysis.

It's stupid to rate our class according to ESPN criteria. They dont care about our needs, only what theyre ranking algorithms need. Forget them. VT does what VT needs, screw the pundits!!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I don't get why everyone has a dump in their pants over this. Seems more than fair to me.

It's an "A" by our own low standards because we're not great at recruiting. In the landscape of all of college football it's a "B" at best.

Not great at recruiting? Huh I think they a good job

I feed off of nightmares

I mean, comparatively we're not great in the sense that we rarely pull 5 star recruits as compared to like the blue bloods of the world. We're not bad considering we still can hover around the top 25 overall, but I wouldn't say we're great either.

Conversely, if you're a blue blood, or competing for national titles consistently and don't pull in 5 stars and 4 stars on the regular, you're doing poorly at recruiting.

I'd say we're doing fairly well considering the mountain we have to climb to get up there with those programs. Expecting 5 stars, or, saying we're not great at recruiting until we get 5 stars like those other more storied programs is kind of silly.

I don't think people are griping over the "fairness" of the ratings (I think most of us can agree a B rating is about right). If you read the comments, we're all griping over how low effort this post by ESPN is. They basically just took 247's rankings, binned the grades based on the ranking, and then sorted by conference. Absolute zero value added, the original rankings add more context in their raw form.

Yeah I would agree with a B as well on this class(We still didn't address the Defensive End position), but I think overall, i think we did a good job considering the offseason and the season we had..

This is great for the ACC
