Davon Morgan parked the car in front of a beauty salon on Broad Street. It was a summer afternoon before his senior year at Varina High, and he was dropping off his sister and grandmother.
His cell phone rang. The call was from Kevin Hollins, a Varina assistant coach who became a mentor to Morgan when he transferred there before his sophomore year. Hollins asked where Morgan was, and Morgan told him.
"If you're driving, stop," Hollins said.
"I'm already parked," Morgan said. "What's up?"
"I want you to look at your grandmother," Hollins said, "and tell her you just got a full ride to Virginia Tech and your tuition is paid for."
