Thomas Smith commits to the Hokies

Wide Receiver Thomas Smith of Lafayette High School committed to Virginia Tech this afternoon. He's the 21st commitment for the Hokie's 2012 class.

Smith, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound rising senior, received an offer from the Hokies earlier this week after attending a football camp last weekend in Blacksburg. Upon receiving the offer, Smith indicated that he would "probably" accept it, but wanted to confer with his parents first.

Smith, who is being recruited as a wide receiver, will play for Fork Union Military Academy in the fall of 2012 prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech.

Smith caught 27 passes for 558 yards as a junior, despite not playing receiver for nearly three games because of a broken hand. Smith, who runs a 4.53 40-yard dash, helped the Rams go 7-3 this past season.

The Hokies were the only BCS school to offer Smith. Smith had been impressing non-BCS and I-AA coaches and schools during camps this summer.

Lafayette receiver Thomas Smith impressed the coaches at the JMU camp. His build and skills were confirmed at the camp and the coaches at James Madison never hesitated to extend an offer to the athletic wide receiver.

At 6-5 230, Smith has an idea build for a college wide receiver. His forty time and performance in one-on-one drills sealed the deal.

He was a First Team All-Bay Rivers pick in 2010, and his senior season should be a big one. He already holds offers from Norfolk State and Ball State, and there’s the possibility of more offers in his future.

Welcome to Hokie Nation Thomas!
