Ideal Coaching Staff
How would the VT coaching staff look like if you could make the hirings/firings/promotions/demotions? Would you replace Frank with Shane/Bud? What coaches around the country would you try to hire as Offensive Coordinator? Are there any former players you would want to bring back home?
Current Staff:
Head Coach: Frank Beamer
Associate Head Coach and Running Backs Coach: Shane Beamer
Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends/Offensive Tackles Coach: Bryan Stinespring
Defensive Coordinator and Inside Linebackers Coach: Bud Foster
Offensive Guards and Center Coach: Curt Newsome
Wide Receivers Coach: Kevin Sherman
Quarterbacks Coach: Mike O'Cain
Defensive Secondary Coach: Torrian Gray
Defensive Line Coach: Charley Wiles
Outside Linebackers and Assistant Defensive Line Coach: Cornell Brown
Associate Athletics Director for Football Operations: John Ballein
Assistant to the Head Coach and Senior Advisor: Billy Hite
Director of Recruiting and High School Relations: Jim Cavanaugh
We all have complained about something within the current staff. Now you can (pretend to) fix those problems.

Well...Guess I'll take the first dive #
"Homegrown Scenario"
HC: Beamer. You have to keep him around because he is virtually the face of our football team. Similarly (in some bad ways) just his name can bring interest to VT's football program.
Running backs coach: I think Shane has done quite a good job on teaching DW how to break tackles, so I'll keep him around.
OC: Ralph Friedgen (sp?). That guy can run an offense, plus he fits into the Beamer family mentality.
DC: Bud Foster is obviously a keeper.
Guards and Center: Obviously Newsome isn't getting it done, but O-line coaches aren't the most well known people, so I couldn't name a replacement if I tried.
Wide Receivers: Kevin Sherman has done a lot in turning nothing into something, so I don't have a problem here.
QB coach: Bring Bryan Randall back into the program.
Secondary: Torrian Gray is hands down my favorite coach in the VT program. His energy is fantastic and he brings out the best in his players.
Dline: Charley Wiles has the inside Dline heading in the right direction.
Ends and OLBs: Cornell Brown is one of the best guys you could have for this job.
Athletic director for football operations: Bryan Stinespring. Hes in a position where he can still talk to recruits, but hes as far away from play calling as we can get him.
Billy Hite and Canavaugh bring up the rear and their positions are fine.
"Dream Team"
HC: Chris Peterson from Boise. He knows how to prepare a team to play in a big game, something we've been missing.
OC: Paul Chryst from Wisconsin. I'm a sucker for the power running game and the we're bigger and strong than you are mentality.
DC: Bud Foster. 'Nuff said.

This looks good. #
Dream Team:
HC: I'd prefer Nick Saban or Bob Stoops, but Peterson is great so I have no qualms.
OC/DC: Foster and Chryst would be a deadly combination.
Homegrown:
RB: I think DW breaking tackles is more due to his lifting, and his lack of vision and hitting the holes could be due to Shane Beamer's inexperience working with running backs. Shane has to be on the staff, but I'm not sure where the best place for him is. Hopefully he gets better in that regard.
QB: I think Bryan Randall would be a good QB coach, and I'd like to bring him back (possibly in a graduate assistant role first to get his coaching feet wet).
O-line: Newsome sucks, he's instantly cut. I don't know any O-line coaches either, so I might put Stinespring in charge there and obviously take away his OC tag. Stiney can't go on the road and recruit unless he's on the coaching staff, so an administrative role wouldn't be good.
OC option 1: I don't know much about Freidgen's past coaching or style, but he would absolutely fit with Beamer's family mentality.
OC option 2: Bruce Arians (OC Pittsburgh Steelers) played for VT back in the 70s. Most coaches don't go from pro to college so it's unlikely, but if he wanted to head home he could. He coached in college for a while, and he's been successful in the pros.
OC option 3: I'm not sure if VT has as much intrigue as Clemson, but I've been very impressed by Chad Morris. If we could pull him away that'd be a HUGE get.
OC option 4: Paul Petrino (OC Illinois) has put up some nice numbers over the years, but he's often leached onto his brother (Louisville, Atlanta Falcons, Arkansas). I don't trust that the success in the past isn't because of his brother, but he has done well so far on his own in Illinois.
Defense: Leave everybody in the same spots. I wouldn't be surprised if Torrian Gray started getting offers for low level DC jobs. Hopefully we can keep him home like we've done with Bud.
NFL experience #
Would really go over well with recruits. High profile name, winning track record. Thats what we need at OC
@Nik_A_Bando
Saban #
I may disown the Hokies if Saban is ever affiliated with this program!
It's a great day to be a Hokie!
Pipe Dream Coaching Changes #
Get me Peyton Manning as QB Coach/Offensive Coordinator when he retires, give him a commercial deal, and watch both. Recruiting on O would skyrocket and we would have a ridiculous passing attack. He already has practice game-planning an offense because he did it in Indy when he wasn't hurt.
Also bring in Bill Callahan (yes- that Bill Callahan) as the O-Line coach. He has consistently put together top o-lines in the NFL and, if not a head coach, would recruit well for Tech's line.
Also put Stiney's picture in every office as a reminder of what not to be.
Pipe dream? Yes. Awesome? Yes. Likely? Absolutely not.

my ideal or ... #

Realistic Ideal #
I was thinking the realistic version of ideal, but who am I to stifle creativity?
minimal changes #
Get rid of Newsome, make Stiney total o-line coach or better yet -- only recruiting -- not sure who we should get as o-line coach then?
bring in Fridge or bring back Bustle as OC or get a bigger NFL name if we could (but not likely)
Love this #
This actually is the most simple and effective way we could improve. I'm not sure of the rules, but I think to recruit on the road, you have to fill a spot on the coaching staff and vice versa. Therefore it would be a waste to have Stiney just recruit, when he could work with the o-line.
NEVER BRING BACK BUSTLE. #
NEVER BRING BACK BUSTLE. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER. give me bruce arians. talk about (generally) succeeding with less...
...you know...
@j3ffress
You have my vote. #
If I'm playing in fantasy land I...
1. Ask Newsome to retire and take a cushy six-figure office job.
2. Move Stiney to the offensive line.
3. Hire either the Fridge or Kevin Rodgers to be the offensive coordinator and play caller. Honestly, Rogers is more familiar with the program and might be the better choice, but Fridge is a hell of a coach.
4. Move O'Cain back to QB coach (even though he did a pretty decent job of calling plays this year).
5. Change nothing on defense.

I think we change #
We change our mascot before we change the coaching staff.
Potential OL coach replacements #
I know many people want an upgrade in offensive line coaching, but OL coaches aren't very recognizable so this is just informative. I came across a few OL coaches with ties to VT. I don't know if they qualify as great OL coaches, but they aren't Curt Newsome. VT also would be a step up from their current gigs.
JB Grimes was OL coach at VT 1993-1997

Don't have the $$ to attract NFL caliber (elite) coaching staff, which is probably needed to get recognition as an "elite" program. Right or wrong the tradtional powers have that "elite" label that we have yet to earn from the media gods. Despite our many years of success, much better than many of the "elite" programs, we are still not seen as an elite program. To be elite we need to win a NC and to continue our success after CFB leaves. Right now we are just a school that CFB put on the map. An elite program has a legacy that outlives one great coach.
However, I still question the meaning of elite. There are many schools that have won a NC, or more than one, yet are not considered elite. I am just glad to be winning every year.
