Playoffs by 2014?

Yes Please! Looks like the power that be are seriously discussing it and it looks like all roads lead to a +1 of some sort.

I personally would prefer a 16 team playoff like the other divisions do but with all 11 conference champs and 5 at larges picked from a BCS type formula. The seedings would be based on the formula as well. Last year would have looked like this.

1) LSU 1) Alabama
8) Louisiana Tech 8) Arkansas State

4) Boise State 4) Kansas State
5) Clemson 5) Wisconsin

2) Oklahoma State 2) Stanford
7) Northern Illinois 7) West Virginia

3) Oregon 3) Arkansas
6) Southern Miss 6) TCU

Tell me that wouldn't have been awesome. As far as game sites goes, first two rounds should definitely be at the higher seed's home field with national semis and championship at neutral sites.

Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Pearlman with some gems:

"If we were to vote today, we would vote for the status quo,"

"We think that in many respects, (the current system is) as good as you could do"

"The Rose Bowl, I think, is one of the outstanding sports events, sports properties, sports brands in the world," he said. "I don't think that's an overstatement."

facepalm

"It's worth it right? It's worth it to lay it all on the line for your brothers."

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster (both quotes)

-1 for BiG. When was the Rose Bowl last relevant?

He is right that it is a sporting "event". Since the BCS started the Rose Bowl has not really decided anything. Same goes for all the other "major" bowls. Why do people bother to watch? The major bowl brand names are what attract attention. It is all about former glory and "tradition". At one time these bowls meant something, other than money, and helped people decide who was the best team. To get an invitation to a bowl meant something. It doesn't work that way any more. Many or most bowls are are a waste of time and a financial loss for the schools. They are a prize for participation.

Why isn't the BS-CS really a series of bowls (like a playoff) leading to a National Championship? Isn't it called a series for a reason? If it is not really a series then it should be called something else. Series implies continuity and connection. But all the BCS bowls are supposedly independent of one another. It is really the Can't Recognize A Playoff (CRAP) system.

Define "relevant"

The Rose got the highest ratings of every bowl game other than the national title game last year. I don't have all the TV ratings handy over the years but that's usually the case. It's a big deal.

The Rose Bowl was the national title game in 2006. Since then the title game has been a separate one from the rest of the BCS bowls.

Rose Bowl is the only bowl besides the BCSNCG that means anything, because it has that historically significant Big 10 vs Pac 10 matchup. It is the only bowl besides a national championship game that I would actually be excited to attend and watch the Hokies play in. It's branding is much stronger than the other BCS non-title bowls, as the Orange Bowl has lost luster, the Fiesta Bowl never had it, and the Sugar Bowl is played in an awful venue.

It is only a matter of time before someone loses their spot to Jerry World and the Cotton Bowl.

Viva El Guapo

Agree with everything except the Sugar Bowl. That is a big deal as well, and the venue, in my opinion, is pretty sweet just because it's in nawlins. It was a blast doing Let's Go Hokies from the balconies on bourbon street and pregaming from there to the stadium with a fish bowl of liquor around my neck and a 12-pack in hand.

As events

I agree the major bowls are prestigous "events" They are relevant to money and bragging rights. But in terms of relevancy to determining a National Champion they are history. Prior to the BCS they could impact the voting in the polls for determining the champion. Not any more.

This topic is about a playoff. If teams host playoff games then these bowls will have even less relevancy. They will be fighting for leftovers from conference champions that are not in the playoffs or those that lose in the playoff. The prestige of being invited will fade somewhat since it is a consolation prize compared with competing for the championship.

Attending a bowl game has always been a recognition for having a good year. Although now it seems a mediocre year can lead to a bowl invite. It can be fun to see how the different conferences compare to one another but the match-ups are not always a good comparison. It is nice to travel South in the winter to get away. Getting into a more prestigious bowl (i.e. pays more money) is nice too.

When will the idea of getting excited over a bowl invite pale in comparison to making the playoffs? The bowls will continue promoting their games trying to excite fans. But at some point the playoffs will generate more excitement.
