Monday practice notes

Per Hokiesports.com:

  • Freshman Donovan Riley ahead of walk on Carl Jackson at #2 boundary corner.
  • J.R. Collins and Corey Marshall are now listed as co-No. 1’s at end, though the Million Dollar Man still worked with the first team on Monday.
  • Randall Dunn stood out in pass skeleton (7 on 7) drills.
  • The punt returner position may be Dyrell Roberts and/or Kyshoen Jarrett. For the record, I hate seeing return guys being used when they start at positions with little depth.
  • Augie Conte has been the best true freshman OL and may make the travel squad. I couldn't tell who he was in the limited video from Sunday.

re: punt returner

Agreed, its not the best situation in the world to have depth issue players in the return position, but you can't really use somebody from the D-line to return kicks, either.

Agreed. I see it more as an opportunity for a sure handed young player to contribute without being a starter, just like Hosley did a few years back when he was the nickel corner.

All the talk has been around Stanford and now the Meyer kid. Assuming that the top five WR's are now Davis, Coles, Roberts, and Stanford, that leaves Fuller, Knowles, Meyer, and Caleb all in the mix for the 5th spot, BUT Knowles and Fuller have already used their redshirts. If I were either one, I would be banging on the door to return kickoffs and punts given how little they have been mentioned in reports.

re: straight-burner...

do you think that CFB will be a bit hesitant to use him on returns knowing that his two major injuries occurred on returns?
