After just two days of practice, Josh Stanford has worked up a bit of a buzz about himself.
Joshua Stanford, the freshman receiver from Georgia, enjoyed a nice practice. First, during the pass skeleton drill in which the quarterback, running backs, receivers and tight ends face the linebacker and defensive backs (basically, running pass plays without linemen), Stanford beat Antone Exum – and maybe Exum was supposed to get safety help – and hauled in a pass from Logan Thomas for about a 50- or 55-yard gain.
When he spoke at his recruiting event, Cav was extremely enthusiastic about getting him late. So place a blind bet, before we know too much more, does he redshirt, is he the steal of the class?

the new #4
my bet is that he does not redshirt.
hope he can show a little "eddie" magic with that number too!
#4 = JC Coleman
Our new #4 is JC Coleman, true freshman running back from Chesapeake, Va. Just an fyi.
i thought so too...
until i saw andy's post today. josh is #4 and jc is #8, fyi.

The
jersey numbers are the numbers listed first i.e greene is #1 coleman is #4
ahhhhhhh
my breast.
i stand corrected. thanks.
No Redshirt
If he keeps making plays like those mentioned in the article (the article also says he made a nice 20 yard catch/run as well), to go along with our inexperience at WR, to go along with Coles' slow recovery, then I say no to the redshirt.
I've read that Beamer has a new perspective on redshirting talent after our past 3 running backs all left early, but the new perspective probably only applies to the RB and QB position, not the WR position because it's a lot harder for a WR to make a huge impact early (esp in our offense).
With all that being said, I think he will get redshirted because Beamer loves using that redshirt, but if Stanford keeps making plays in practice, then it may be like the DMFW situation where it was obvious he was so talented that the coaches were forced to let him get some action.
I looked up some highschool highlights and it seems like he has a great pair of hands and some fast legs, and it seems like he's putting them to use immediately. I'm down for anything that helps LT3, and helps our offense help our defense.
Gotta Love the Unwanted Recruit
Last year it was Maddy. This year maybe Stanford. And again, in a position of need. VT is making a living on finding the hidden gems. I hope he does make it. And I hope it motivates the other underclassmen receivers (Smiling, Knowles, etc.).
Stanford was not necessarily unwanted, just undiscovered. UCLA went after him very, very hard when they already had a 2012 class with one 5-star and eight 4-stars, two of which were wide receivers. This kid is clearly very talented.
He was late in the game.
He moved from Canada to Georgia and was off the radar. A true credit to our coaches for knowing that state well enough to find him.
No Redshirt
I say play the man, especially since he sounds ready enough and we will need experience come 2013. Also if you've seen the pics of Joel Caleb on TSL, guy is jacked already, he should play too.
I just hope we don't burn multiple WR redshirts. If Stanford plays, then Caleb and others should be redshirting. If Caleb plays, everybody else should be redshirting. Unless Coles's injury lingers longer than expected, we will have enough experience at the position to avoid wasting eligibility.
to an extent
i agree with you jackal but i seriously doubt that both will redshirt (stanford and caleb)...i seriously doubt that EITHER redshirts. we're losing our top 4 receivers after this season and knowles, smiling, asante have barely made waves at all, which should tell you something. we're hearing more about stanford after his first two college practices than either of those two. we need experience AND talent coming back at WR next year. we have Irick who will RS, Thomas Smith should come in January. Hopefully, we'll get Hamilton in this class, maybe Kamara in the next class....we'll reload. I think that we're in a much worse position next season if we redshirt both of these guys .. hopefully knowles can step up and improve...that would help
Kamara?
Who's this Kamara you speak of? I'd like to look him up.
Thanks
don't expect
to see kamara in o&m.
you are way to harsh on the young guys, tho this is a wake up or move out season for smiling.
knowles is a burner, fastest wr on the team, by a decent margin. he will play this yr and should be good.
don't give up on asante yet, he's a r-fr, which means he got 0 reps last year and did most scout team.
irick is a big guy, give him a yr in the s&c program, could be a lot like boykin.
Not saying thos guys won't contribute but it doesn't appear that they'll be of the caliber that Lu big 3 are now...ever..from all accts they isn't really stand out..but yes..knowles is. Burner and I expect him to return KOs
...irick will be a good one though
Fuck Robert Lockhart
Agreed
From what I'm hearing he likes VPI but he is really just waiting on LSU. Not holding my breathe on Kamara..
the Hoos have an in with us and from what i hear, uva and unc both have an upper hand to us ... i've heard also that kamara is very likely to be headed to the sec but i haven't heard anything about specific teams.
I'm fine with burning one redshirt, just not both. There is no way they will both get enough playing time to even consider them as having experience going into next year. Coles, Davis, and Dyrell have the top 3 spots locked up. When is the last time the number 5 receiver got a whole lot of reps in our offense? Never.
in most years
i agree but this season, if the coaches manage playing time well enough, i disagree ... this is of course assuming that, aside from the top 3, that stanford and caleb end up as #4 and #5 .. a few things will determine if either or both of them RS.
first, depends on how the other underclassmen (namely knowles, smiling, and asante) progress. i haven't read or heard much about them from spring or fall (so far) other than that .. maybe i shouldn't read into it too much but i don't see that as a good thing and assume that they've not stood out really...hopefully i'm wrong
second, health of dj coles ... he may miss a few games while he continues to rehab
third, if we employ some kind of up-tempo offense some (they're working on some of that), i could see more of some 3-WR looks, spread'ish, with short, easy slant routes. that takes some of the learning curve out and would help to keep fresh legs on the field.
i could see NEITHER of them redshirting ...but if one of them does, i think that caleb redshirts and stanford doesn't.
Jamil Kamara, one of the higher rated WRs to come out of the commonwealth in years .. class of 2014 (same as Hand, Brown, Holmes)

Don't forget Quin Blanding
He likely won't be a Hokie, but he's a possible 5 star and further demonstrates the greatness of the class of 2014 in VA. I keep hearing Hand, Brown, and Blanding will ALL be 5 stars. If we can start to truly dominate in-state recruiting, there is no stopping us.
We really won't know too much
until the pads go on. A lot will depend on how well they execute blocking techniques as well as how well they run their patterns.
Coaches
Will put the best guys on the field to give the best chances to win.
Stanford with another good outing.

I don't think he's had a bad practice yet.
