Tech was scheduled to play Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 8. However, with a short week of preparation following the Sept. 3 game in Blacksburg, Va., the school preferred to face an FCS opponent. Coach Paul Johnson is undoubtedly cognizant of Virginia Tech's 2010 loss, five days after losing to Boise State on Labor Day, to James Madison.
However, with the rest of the ACC's schedule virtually locked into place, and many other conferences' schedules completed, Tech's options were limited.
"You can't start to shuffle anybody around, because nobody wants to move," Hogan said.
Tech has been working with the ACC to find such a partner. Hogan said the school had narrowed it to a couple of possibilities and was waiting on them to make a decision.
"We're close," he said. "I hope we can announce something pretty soon."

Haha, what I take from that is that CPJ is expecting to lose to us.
I actually can see it from CPJ's perspective: why play the biggest ACC game on the slate as the first game, let alone conference game, of the season? If you lose this game, which has historically become the Division Championship Game, in week one, you are playing from behind the entire season and in all likelihood will end up losing the division (not saying we are going to win out but odds are GT will lose another game or two in ACC play down the road just as I see Va Tech losing at least once). I really don't think he gives a damn about the FCS team the next week (though the media is once again playing up our loss to JMU a few years back after the Boise State loss- nicely done Heather Dinich, you feel smart don't you?) just the fact that the biggest ACC game is week one. If I were CPJ or Al Groh I would be petitioning the Conference to have this game moved back to October again, and this time not allow us to have our Bye the prior week or even switch it up with the Cincinnati game (though since tickets have gone on sale I don't think that will happen for legal reasons). I know people are ragging on him but I understand his frustration- he has never wanted to take the Jim Weaver approach to scheduling and I don't necessarily blame him.
i'd rather
we did play GT in the first game -- beat their ass and move on .. we have two more important games on the schedule, fsu and clemson. I'd like to play both of them closer to the end of the season .. maybe the fsu game at home on thursday, then a long 10 days before a powder-puff home game (bc??) .. then the clemson game .. that would be optimal but doubt it works out like that .. guess we'll find out soon enough.
