Favorite Game of the 2011 Season

As an '08 grad im far enough removed from the university now to comfortably ask anyone I know left to "crash" at their pad. Nonetheless, my loyalty to the program remains as intact as it ever was. Since then I had somewhat failed to partake in as many games as I had liked until this year. The spring game is hardly an actual game over an annual talent show. Nonetheless, It was probably my second favorite experience this year. Since last april I have attended the Appy St opener, ECU away, Clemson pt. 1, UVA away, and the Sugar Bowl. The latter in New Orleans has stamped an unforgettable memory in my brain when considering how much I consumed in a three day period. However, in terms of the best game I've been to this year I'd have to say is the opener.

Call me whatever you'd like but watching your team obliterate an opponenent, albeit of the FCS variety, to start the year under a welcoming Blacksburg Sun just feels good. I was hardly nervous that the game would flop as waywardly as the JMU debacle and know that kind of win is hardly something to beat the drum to. Somewhere deep within it did feel as some sort of payback to the embarrassment though. Regardless, other than the showcase we had against those on our own roster this game was there to make a point, and it did. After the drubbing we knew the Logan Era had truly begun. Trepidation going forward was apparent but the promise shown brighter.

I hate that my favorite game couldnt have been against a more quality opponent. I hate as equally that it wasnt the sweet satisfaction of crushing those pansies up north in their own back yard. Easy wins against far superior opponents oft feel as empty as the last keg. What remains is that I got to see Logan Thomas' debut in Lane. I was able to be a part of the energy that comes with a clean record to start the season chalk full of Rails, beautful women, and Orange & Maroon clad family of the Hokie Nation. Nothing beats being at a game in Blacksburg for me.

My opnion is my own however. Feel free to tell us about your favorite game in Lane or otherwise. For those who unfortunately had to watch at a distance please do provide your own details of a Hokie Game festivus whether it was at home or a local watering hole.

Favorite game was Miami #

Favorite game was Miami definitely:

Boykin long bomb to answer the Miami score

Stuffing the UM fake field goal on the first drive

David Wilson's Spiderman sideline run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MazffVhy6pw

LT Smash on the game-winning 4th and 1 run

The ESPN hype video when UM called the timeout before the last play

Sundown game at Lane Stadium (God Bless 3:30PM kicks). Plus I talked to Tyrod, Bryan Randall, Paul Debnam, and David Wilson at TOTS. On Sunday, took my dog Cody (guess who he's named after) around campus and to the duck pond. A Brent-Musberger "fine" fall weekend.

I'm really hoping he named him after Cody Grimm

By far -- the ass-whipping that we handed out to UV-GAY was the best game of the season

By far... Love the doughnut on the scoreboard at the end. Every player came to play that day.

Win one for the Beamer...

Everything about that game screamed Virginia Tech. We were as loud as I have ever heard Lane. LT3 played a great game, David Wilson got going, and the defense made plays when we needed them. Beamerball showed up, when we stopped the fake FG and the 20 yard QB blast at the end was fantastic. Not to mention what I heard after the game, the greatest quote to come from a Miami fan ever, "It was so loud, I have never heard anything that loud in my entire life." Yeah, Virginia Tech does that to people.

Miami #

Because I was there. Have not been to see Hokies play in person much but I don't think we have ever lost a game I have been to. My streak goes back at least to the first Hokies bowl game victory. I have probably jinxed it now. Will have to stay at home or wait until we are in the NC game.

Had I been in Lane for Miami, my answer would probably be Miami. However, I was home sick and didn't make the trip to the 'Burg. It was the most entertaining ACC game of the year, and I could feel the suspense, intensity and joy from my couch, but I'm a sucker for a blowout.

The Hoos were pumped to host the Hokies after their thrilling win in Tallahassee. All week long I read The Sabre and other Hoo blogs and boards. They thought they'd win. They cited a magic in the air, it was their time, they were due, etc... Then we stomped them. It was a statement game for us. We bullied them around the field. We showed everyone in the state and a national audience who the team in Virginia was. Better than the win itself was watching their fans crashdown to Earth and come to terms that they were just UVA, second best.

I CANNOT decide #

I watched the miami and uva games on television. For miami, I got together with Hokie alumni and friends and got completely tanked trying to ease my nerves during an awesome game. For uva, I got together with the exact same crew and hadn't laughed so hard in long time. That was a game to beat your chest to whilst waltzing around a terp-filled office that Monday. In a game that mattered, we shut those hoos up hard and crushed their dreams..there's not much better. 38-0.

The two games I went to were the Thursday night North Carolina game and the Sugar Bowl. The Thursday night game is a tradition with my fellow Hokie family members and friends, so that had its perks. The Sugar Bowl was the Sugar Bowl. A hard fought game where we, thankfully, didn't get smoked. It was heartbreaking walking out of the Superdome, but New Orleans was fun nonetheless. My mother constantly tells people that she will never forget as long as she lives, me walking into the stadium screaming, "THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! I LOVE MY LIFE!"

miami, no question #

I was at both Miami and UVA and UM was a thriller akin to the Boise game only this time we won. Logan running into the endzone untouched for the winning score is a moment in Hokie history we'll be talking about when we're old and gray and letting our grandkids taste their first booze at a tailgate. I was like 4 rows up high fiving and hugging before the crowd calmed down. And then they play Enter Sandman for Miami's last play, I was screaming so loud I though I was gonna faint.

UVA was really satisfying, all of it. The tailgate with our Hoo friends where they had champagne and a cheese plate out, (no bullshit) and we had burgers, lil smokies, and Miller Lite in a can. All the shit talking walking up to the stadium was hillarious. A guy looked at me and said "chokies" and I said back simply "lacrosse." He stopped smiling and told me to "bob on the knob." And then the game was pretty boring, by the second half at least.

Miami was insanity, UVA was just us and the Hoos playing their respective roles. It was fun but it was no Miami

It was a catch!!!

Call me a n00b #

"chokies" is obvious, but I NEED further explanation on those quips you were throwing back and forth at each other.

My highly intoxicated friends #

My highly intoxicated friends were doing "Lets Go! Hokies!" walking up the ramp of the stadium and the chokies guy kept looking back and yelling "bubbas!" and "hicks" with noone from our group noticing but me. We got to the top, he stopped said chokies, I said a single word "lacrosse" and he got all serious. I said "what, you dont like lax?" And called me motherfucker faggot cocksucker etc etc. Me, walking away just smiling at him as he continued beratting me with hollow threats. I thought it was so funny because Wahoos like lax right? Its like their sport right?

I got a bunch smack talkin stories from that day from racial comments about Logan to some Wahoo lesbian getting in one of my buddies' face cause he asked which way Charlotte was after the game

It was a catch!!!

Lax #

Nothing wrong with Lax. Wonder why he was so sensitive. VT has men's and women's Lax teams, men's is not varisty but a club. There are more club lacrosse teams at schools then there are varsity. There is a club lacrosse national chamionship, All-Americans, etc... VT has been to the Nationals several times. So we also have a Lax interest.

Blue Collar Hokie's picture

yeah i mean thats sort of the #

yeah i mean thats sort of the thing right. ive got nothin against lax, i think its cool they can hit each other with the sticks, but it is a sport associated with wealth, privilege, elitism, that sort of thing and that was the shit talkin angle i was goin with. he was obviously sensitive to it.

ahh stereotypes

It was a catch!!!

Interesting #

I like lacrosse too, but seriously, I didn't realize it was associated with being snotty..but I guess that makes sense (Duke? Private school? Idk). I guess hoos know that and take offense when you say lacrosse to them? That is beYOND stupid and I love it.

hey, i'll drink whatever from #

hey, i'll drink whatever from overpriced imperial IPAs to Mickey's at 9 in the morning

but if were goin cheap american i'll take miller lite, it has a little bit sweeter taste imho

not gonna turn down whatever the tailgate is drinking though

remember the bud lites in O&M cans? that was awesome

It was a catch!!!

busch? #

cmon man .. busch?? seriously, i'll drink busch, natty, miller lite, bud light, coors light .. any of em as maintenance beer but i'm definitely a beer snob ... the great thing about these beers is that you can pound the hell out of em .. as far as a maintenance beer goes, i'll take coors light or even better -- yuengling

but i definitely have my limits -- and i don't drink NO MALT-FUCKING-LIQUA YO .. mickey's = a fine malt liquor = oxymoron .. maybe if you could spice it up with some tomato juice and hot sauce .. imagine those shits though

Blue Collar Hokie's picture

dude mickey's with tomato and #

dude mickey's with tomato and hot sauce would fuck up your gut like i dont even wanna imagine!

but dont hate on mickeys like i've always said: its cheap, it taste good, it gets ya tore up

its the next morning when that hornet'll sting ya!

but yeah i'm an occasional beer snob, went through an abbey ale phase over the last few months. . . if you wanna go poundable for football but still quality? fat tire amber or the one and only newcastle brown

It was a catch!!!

yup #

youre right but wouldnt fuck my gut up much more than just mickey's .. when i'm drinkin to get fucked up and have no regard for my health -- it's icehouse or beast ice .. most bang for your buck but still not terrible tasting -- malt liquor is off the table for me .. sorry dude but malt liquor tastes like shit .. about the only compliment i can give mickey's is it tastes better than the rest of that shit (old E .. ugh)

ommegang makes a kick-ass abbey but it's pricey (not filtered though so not sure if thats an issue with ya). fat tire is awesome but i'd only give it a 7 out of 10 on the pound scale, im a bigger fan of their hoptoberfest than their amber. their snow day is good too as im a big fan of winter beers (sam winter lager, mmm)

newcastle brown has, by far, the BEST quality to poundable ratio. they inject extra co2 in there for a lighter drink -- we call it liquid voodoo in my parts because it will flat creep up on your ass .. ibu is a little low for me though but it's a great summer beer for a brown

like i said, yuengling is definitely my favorite maintenance (cheap american) beer .. to maintain my fat buzz once i've drop 6-10 of the good shit

i am a sierra nevada whore -- i love all of their beers and almost cried when NRV lost the "game" of landing a SN brewery there.

i could talk beer all day .. i love just about all of it .. i brew my own -- home brew is the best of em all

RiVAHokie's picture

It's a tailgate #

if youre given a beer you drink it. I can understand starting off with something that delivers any semblance of taste. however, after about two hours whatever you consume will go down like aquafina. Since I live in Richmond I no longer turn my nose to the likes of PBR anymore.

Miami #

I was at both, and I say Miami because, while the UVA game was absolutely spectacular and I'm always down for an ass beating in Hooville, afterwards we were still in France. Would've been nice to head down to Big Al's like we did after Miami. And, in my opinion, the 2011 Miami crowd was the best we've been since the 2003 Miami game. Absolutely electric.

Also, RiVAHokie, I'm an 07 grad and still crash at my friends' places (although they work in Bburg). Never graduate, brah.

NO TWEEDY, IT'S WHIP!!!!!!!

Miami slightly over UVA #

I was at both of these games as well and like many have noted, they were both great for their own reasons. The Miami game came after one of the worst losses I've experienced at Lane Stadium watching these Hokies. I don't think anyone knew what to expect when Miami came to town and especially from Logan Thomas. However, Logan provided one of the better quarterback performances I've seen in person hitting throw after throw while providing the necessary runs for a total of five touchdowns. When Miami scored with just over a minute left in the game, I thought "Here we go again.." before we even touched the ball. LT3, however, developed his spot as the quarterback at Virginia Tech and took the team down the field for a moment I will never forget. The atmosphere was electric. The call on ABC was electric. The game was simply amazing.

The UVA game was another game that while I had much confidence in our team, I still had a bit of the unexpected. We had just come off a Thursday night win over UNC that wasn't exactly beautiful and the Wahoos finally were playing with some confidence they hadn't seen in a LONG time. I took the trip with five of my closest buddies, all of which were cheering for UVA. As the game started, my nerves kicked in. Our defense came out with a nice opening series then LT3 and the offense came on the field. The moment my nerves went away and everything felt right was early on. LT3 dropped back, looked down the sideline, and as I stood on the UVA's "hill section", I witnessed Marcus Davis catch a deep pass over Chase Minnifield. A few plays later, LT3 ran into the end zone and a deep breath was let out of me. Thus, the 38-0 demolition occurred.

Miami or UNC for me #

Gotta say first I don't get to make many trips back to Blacksburg since I moved up to New York; however, I was fortunate enough (thanks to my girlfriend) to get tickets to both games. In terms of entertainment value, I had more fun purely as a spectator at the Miami game than I've had since the Nebraska game from 2009. Honestly one of the best fourth quarters offensively I have ever watched in any sport period by both teams. Though I still hate Miami, the way they kept taking our haymakers made me gain more respect for them and Al Golden as the game progressed though their fans seriously made me question that progression- boy was it sweet to see them, not the Miami players who played their hearts out, crying as they covered their ears when Enter Sandman came on after Tweedy blasted Miller to end the game in regulation. I haven't seen Lane like that since '07 when "He Who Must Not Be Named" led the miracle comeback in the monsoon at Lane. The volume of Lane matched up which was shocking and awe inspiring. Plus that was Logan's coming out party against one of the better defensive secondaries around. He looked like an all-ACC QB that day boys and girls.

In terms of the UNC game, I felt playing in those conditions the team responded incredibly well to an early gut check by UNC particularly the goal line stand where Hopkins forced a fumble. Some said it was ugly but I thought that game was beautiful because of how the team responded. Plus sitting two rows behind the Corps of Cadets in the south endzone with hand warmers didn't hurt the evening either. Plus the offense was able to counter UNC's stout d-line incredibly well. When the o-line handled them in the third quarter, I thought that was some of the best line play I've seen since becoming a VT fan back in 2003: both were great for their own particular reasons.

OF course, my least favorite games were the Clemson debacles and also ECU. I hated our performance but we got the 'w.' Unlike many I loved the Sugar Bowl minus the mistakes and the results. That, to me, showed the potential this team has moving forward. LET'S GO HOKIES!
