What SOPA /PIPA means to you

I'm sure you've all heard of it by now with many of our favorite websites "blacking out" in protest of the proposed SOPA/PIPA bills milling around Congress since October. To catch up to speed on the bill I suggest reading the following:

The heart of these bills are to stop the piracy that proliferates the internet via offshore domains. These are the same sites that provide pirated software/ movies/ songs and knock off products many like to illegaly obtain. However, the breadth of the bills may have implications that reach further than intended. These implications can have a stifling effect on the creativity and freedom of information we share daily. Closer to home here at TheKeyPlay it means no longer being able to manipulate photos and .gifs that take place in the not-so-serious aspects of the site that make it great. I encourage you to do your own research as well. If interested you can help petition via Google here.

I can't co-sign this enough. #

SOPA is a bad solution to an actual problem, and if it passes it would threaten the free Internet we know today. I encourage everyone to take 5 minutes and sign one of the online petitions (I used Google), or contact one of your state's senators or representatives.

I used OpenCongress to send a letter to my reps and signed the Google petition. Not to get all political and shit, but as you follow this bill, remember that it has to be killed completely. It is far too broad and dangerous to simply go back to commitee and be amended. Luckily it is looking less and less likely everyday that it will pass.

Cosigned. Wrote congressmen #

Cosigned. Wrote congressmen by email earlier today. Will phone them tomorrow.

Here is some information on how to contact local politicians in order to discuss the issue. http://mgoblog.com/content/stop-sopa#comment-1441468

SOPA and PIPA have good intent, but threaten to damage Youtube highlights and hilarious gifs. These acts must not be passed.

Fair use and the internet #

Needs to be a balance so creative people don't get ripped off and any of us get plagiarized. Electronic media makes it easy to go too far. I think some software gurus could develop some apps to make sure those creating content get proper attribution (and compensation where appropriate).
