The NCAA informed the University of Virginia today that sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims has been granted a waiver and will be eligible to compete on the Cavalier football team this fall. He will not be required to sit out one season per the NCAA's bylaws regarding undergraduate transfers. Sims transferred to UVa after spending the past two years at Alabama. He redshirted the 2010 season and played as a backup in 2011.
Sims will have three years of eligibility at Virginia starting this season. He has been enrolled at the University since June."I am pleased we were able to work with the NCAA to get a resolution regarding this matter," said Virginia coach Mike London. "We look forward to having Phillip and the rest of our team in camp this August."
UVa now has approximately 7,439 quarterbacks on their roster.

I wonder
What guidelines does the NCAA use and what is the process for waiving the rules? Not saying it isn't justified but why have a rule if it is so easy to get around? Isn't the rule there for a reason? I guess in this case Uva can't be accused of recruiting away, which is probably the reason for the rule. The NCAA probably also thinks that it won't make a difference for uva's performance. However, if it was a recruit leaving uva for Alabama it might be a different story.
Should we force recruits to keep their commitments if they get homesick or don't get the playing time they want?
Their argument must have been something like this; "He really isn't that good of a player because he did not play for Alabama and was not in line to play. It was not because we really need a good QB. We have plenty of QBs so he is not likely to play this year anyway."
We shall see how it turns out.
College football
This is going to have a trickle down effect for years to come. If you read any articles on Recruit 757 every year there are masses of players switching high schools to get playing time or to get into a better program. What kind of message is this to the kids? What happened to loyalty and working hard to overcome more talented players ahead of you on the depth chart. The whole 7-on 7 scene out there is starting to get really sketchy and is contributing to the problem although if run correctly is great for getting the kids noticed. I just don't like the message this is sending kids. Why even sign a letter of intent if you dont have to honor it or there are no repercussions to transferring when things aren't going your way. If you transfer you sit out a year it's always been that way. I just haven't seen any evidence of any serious hardships on Sims behalf. What next year??? What about Rocco and all the hard work he has put in at UVA??
So if you were employed somewhere and stuck in a job where you had no upward mobility and very little chance of getting a raise, you wouldn't entertain offers from other companies that gave you 2x as much money and a more senior role? I mean, if you did, what happened to your loyalty and work ethic?
Just putting a counterpoint out there. It's nowhere near as black and white as either you or I make it out to be. In some cases, kids are just waffling aimlessly and avoiding competition and looking out solely for #1 and have no sense of commitment. In other cases, there's a bona fide reason for somewhere to pursue another option.
Not the same
In this case it is about a scholarship to attend the university and play football. I don't think there is a difference in value. Uva worth 2X Alabama football? I think not!
Agreements and contracts generally have penalty clauses to protect each side's interests. In the case of student athletes signing on to play for a school they know going in that if they want to transfer they need to sit out a year. The schools make an investment in time pursuing a recruit and money for a scholarship so there should be a disincentive to seek transfers.
What hardship could be suffered by sitting out a year? I don't get the connection between immediately playing football and wanting to be closer to an ill family member. Maybe the family member doesn't have a good prognosis so might not make it another year.
I think if the "wait a year" rule is to be waived in this case then as a compromise he should have to sit out a year in the future.
In my opinion...
it doesn't matter who their QB is...they're still wahoos.
Agree with your point
I agree 100% with your analogy and point but from every article I have read I just can't find any significant reason for him to transfer away. If you look at just some of the kids we are recruiting, Fisher, Kamara, Brown all those guys switching high schools this year. Then seeing these guys who switching universities and then talking about not getting a fair shake. I just think that ( a) they should have knew the in-state kid is getting first look. (b)there are consequences and repercussions to transferring. (c) they should do their due diligence and visit and research the coach and university and see how other kids were treated in the past before making a commitment. Just old school I guess. Great point though. There are absolutely cases where kids should be able to get out and leave.
RE: Phillip Sims
what james gayle said,he's gotta be the best shit talker we've had in a while
Can't wait to
hear all the wahoo fans compare this to when we had evans, williams, and wilson. It's going to be awesome to watch the messiah screw this one up.
20 Bucks
says Watford transfers.
$30
Says Watford stays, but moves to WR and Rocco transfers. #newhoos
fwiw
word is that sims's father has an illness being treated at uva .. which i would equate to it being serious. i'm sure there are other reasons .. but i won't question him wanting to be near his dad is serious shit is going on.
