A Quick Note on the Wyatt Teller Move

I know that there have been some comments regarding Wyatt Teller's move to offensive tackle, and worry that if he moves back to defensive line that this could slow his development as a defensive lineman. One thing that you have to understand, at the DI college level, repetitions are limited for guys who are going to redshirt and not in the two deep. Teller would get work in individual drills, but he would be with the OFFENSIVE staff as a scout D during team periods. That means, instead of learning the Hokie defensive concept and assignments, Teller (along with other members of the scout D) would be running the defensive scheme's of Hokie opponents.

As I have highlighted in past French on the Bench articles, the Hokie defensive tackles use different techniques designed to create fill gaps and create lanes for linebackers to make plays. By not being in the two deep, Teller would get minimal experience in those roles. If he does move back to defense next season, which I don't forsee unless the Hokies strike out on both Ricky Walker and Derrick Nnadi, his growth on DL will be minimally impacted and he will have spring practice to get back up to speed.
