No Home Thursday Game for Hokies

Is anyone happy about this? Is there a positive take?

That's what I get for writing a post in class on my phone, and then putting it up on my computer once I get out.

RIP Stick It In

Extremely unhappy. No positive take #goacc

I think the ACC needs to overhaul their leadership and front office, ASAP. They have help make the ACC a mockery of college football. Who forces a school to repeat road trip to Chapel Hill and Miami? Why didn't the ACC force Notre Dame to become full member of the ACC?

Let's not forget the LOL of $3 ACCCG that became national news and a big time mockery.

And traveling to Atlanta, again, to take on the Bees.

#goacc #fuckacc #VT4SEC

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

We're not going back to UNC, I thought we had them at home no matter what. Miami, GT, UVA and BC are on the road.

Rip his freaking head off!

Edit: I have heard we will make a return trip to Pittsburgh.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

I'm worried since we play GT during the short week. That offense gives us fits, even when we play defense against it like the last two years. 2009 still haunts me (even though Bad Tech forfeited that season).

It's all about The VPISU
VT '10, Born & Raised in the 804.
Rockin in The Bakken.
GO: Freeman Rebels, Keydets, Black Knights (the VMI of the North), NY Rangers & Giants, and ATL Braves.

Yeah, we had our chances in the 1st half in 09. We had the ball, what 3 times on the GT side of the field and came away with 3 points. The D played damned good in the 1st half. Take care of business in the 1st half we win that game.

Better solution

Cut our ties with this cancer of a conference and head over to the SEC, who is waiting with open arms.

Glad to know the ACC doesn't care about my senior year. Just means that I'll have to take 2 trips to Atlanta next year.

Rip his freaking head off!

I'm sick and tired of getting fucked over. The ACC is killing us slowly as a program and Weaver is just letting it happen.

Edit: This is totally unacceptable!

It's all about The VPISU

Things can only escalate quickly from here....

A blow to an already weak home schedule for the year, not good.

There's only one solution: #BeatBama

Rip his freaking head off!

beat LOLUVA, Win the ACCCG, and throttle whoever we play in the BCS by a margin of 50 points. That will make me feel better.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

I think

I'd die as soon the scoreboard hit zero.

terrible monday

What is this heresy of which you speak?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

This just feels like disrespect

Ok, remember when we moved to the ACC? It was kind of like, we were wheedled in by the gov? Everyone thought, yeah, FSU & Miami are going to dominate the league? No one gave us a snowball's chance. We lost three games in 2004, one at the start to the #1 team in the nation (USC), one at the end of the season to a ticked-off, left-at-the-altar #3 Auburn team, and one league game, a close one with NC State. All three games were competitive. But the one thing that the 04 Hokies had was a BIG chip on their shoulder. They heard it all season..they didn't belong....they weren't going to be competitive. They beat three top-20 teams (WVU, LOLUVA, & Miami), and the most points they allowed any opponent was 24 (twice, one W, one L).

This is the same kind of disrespect. They aren't going to be any good. They weren't competitive last season, and won't be this season. Frank is over the hill. We've heard it all before. I hope the team takes notice. Hopefully they make everyone take notice of the boys from Blacksburg. It starts with #BEAT BAMA!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

7-6 gets you this

Its all about ratings. No top 25 ranking also hurts.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Tell that to GT, Pitt and NC State.

Rip his freaking head off!

Georgia Tech=ratings?

I know they ended up coming out of the coastal division last year, but I would think we would still have a larger national draw than them. And yet they have two thursday night games, although playing Clemson probably has more to do with that than anything else

RIP Stick It In

haha can't wait to hear Rece Davis talking about how the rambling wreck car is just an icon of college football...getting your blood pumping on Thursday night!!!

Hyping up Hokie Nation one video at a time.

The only real positive I can think of is recruiting, the logistics of the Thursday night game doesn't work out well for high school kids that have school and games on Friday night. It does suck for the students though to not have the Thursday night game seeing as we kinda created the uniqueness of the Thursday night game for ESPN.

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

Yeah, getting away from two Thursday night games

is a good idea. It was pretty stale for our fanbase and for the country in general. (Who is on Thursday night this week, Cincinnatti, Boise or Virginia Tech?) The home crowds were more sparse than a Saturday game would be because it was so hard to get non-students there.

it sucks that to go from 2 Thursday nighters to one starts with a road game, but I'm glad we are transitioning away from 2. Having a home Thursday night game every other year will make us enjoy it more.

good point

it sucks in a way and will be missed but...good point

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

I see what you're saying, but...

The thing is, we don't have many marquee matchups because we're in the lesser division of a relatively weak conference. So there aren't many opportunities for our Saturday games to be flexed into primetime slots. Thursday night games at home give us national exposure, and a chance for ESPN to drool over how loud our stadium is, and how magical a Thursday night in Blacksburg feels. Even once ND half-joins the conference, I don't think we can count on them to give us a national tv game every time we play them.

RIP Stick It In

If we're in the top ten, count on it.

That's a given

Unfortunately, how often will that happen? We'll have to be undefeated or noe-loss after a sufficiently difficult stretch of schedule. So either middle of the season including a big OOC win, or late in the season after several ACC wins. I'm not up on my history, but have we ever opened a season in the top 10?

Man, this schedule has really put a damper on my normal offseason optimism. I'm not trying to upset any of you people

RIP Stick It In

We're not playing ND this year...

Say, for example, that we play them middle of October.

Looking back, we were in the top 10 sometime during October in each of the following seasons:

Granted, the first 6 of those seasons we were unbeaten while in the top 10, and 2007 we had only lost to #2 LSU and 2009 we had only lost to #5 Bama, but it just means getting back to the front of the ACC and beating the teams we're supposed to beat. I'd say those are reasonable goals for 2-3 years down the road when we may be hosting ND in Lane.

EDIT: and we used to perennially start the season in or near the top 10. A list of top 10 starts:

And since 1999, we have only started the season outside the top 17 once, and that was the 2004 season, when we were fresh off of a 2003 season that saw us limp home with an 8-5 season on the strength of a 2-5 finish... and we were moving to the ACC, where we were obviously going to get trounced annually.

I'll admit, my fandom didn't really start till my freshman year (2010). I didn't know we had so much rankings respect just a short while ago. 7-6 really made my short term memory pretty depressing.
I agree 100% with top of the ACC, top-10 nationally being a reasonable goal for the coming years (especially with the way the 2014 recruiting class is looking). I also agree that the biggest step is just beating the teams we're supposed to.

RIP Stick It In

This Doesn't Make Sense

ESPN loves coming to Blacksburg on Thursday nights. They love showing "Enter Sandman." They love hyping up our fans and our program. It gets them ratings. The ACC has little to do with picking the Thursday night games. I'm guessing this is Weaver's doing. That is the only thing that makes sense. Blame Weaver.

enter sandman

They don't even show our intro much. It is very rare of years recent that they actually show our Enter Sandman intro. Wonder if it is a music licensing issue...

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

this past year was a horrible intro on the fsu game because there was no enter sandman, the unc 2011 thursday night game had a great enter sandman entrance

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

This is such a big pile of #RollTide, it's not even funny anymore.

I guess

this is our punishment for a bad season? Either that or HD wrote the schedule.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

For what it is worth, I heard the decison not to have a Thursday night home game was made by Tech.

So was the decision to ban stick it in

RIP Stick It In

That actually makes me feel better about the situation, but it still kinda sucks.

Proud Member Of The Key Play Community Since January 2012.

Well that just makes me want Jim Weaver to be gone even more.

Rip his freaking head off!

Look on the brightside! We get to play Boston College up at Chestnut Hill again!

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

/Obligatory Professor Farnsworth meme

And Miami in Miami.....

One of Jack Tyler's tweets showed that he was pretty excited about that.

I love Virginia Tech, regardless of the outcome of every game.

It's ironic how angry we are that we don't host a Thursday night game, and the Clemson administration seems upset that they do:

We should get Weaver to call them and ESPN up and perform a quick trade, I'd happily take Maryland on Thursday night on a short week than not having any Thursday game at all.

Not that ESPN would even consider such a trade, giving up Clemson-GT for VT-Maryland...

I said it above, but I'm told it was Tech that didn't want to host a Thursday night game, not the ACC or ESPN shutting us out. I wouldn't be surprised Clemson is taking our "spot".

I can't speak for everyone, but I don't want to believe that or AD is so out of touch with what (I think) most of the fans want. This is almost as bad as the NHL partnering with Nickelback. There better be a damn good football reason

RIP Stick It In

The fact that you mentioned that abortion of a band, nickelback, shows how emphatic you are about us getting the raw deal.

From The Oatmeal's "How to Suck at Your Religion"

Out of touch?

You're not very familiar with Jim Weaver, are you?

I know, saw it earlier

That's why I said that "we should get Weaver to call". Bombard his office with letters and phone calls and such, make sure he knows what the fans want, hope that he makes the best decision for the fans and not necessarily the best business decision.

My ESPN comment wasn't saying they were "shutting us out", just that Clemson-GT is a much more enticing matchup this year than VT-Maryland.

the poor wretches :(

Jim Weaver should offer to take this terrible burden off their hands for a couple million dollars

RIP Stick It In

Maybe not a "couple million"...

the difference financially is pretty low for us, and while the extra exposure would help as far as recruiting goes I don't know that it would be worth "millions".

I was going more for all the "inconvenience" we'd be saving them. With shared tv revenue, I agree the school's profit difference would be small

RIP Stick It In

Oh, completely missed the point, sorry

Stupid clemson

If "the border of campus" equals "in the middle of campus" then yea I guess they're stadium is in the middle of their campus.

EDIT: oops, meant to post this in response to Joe's post about the clemson letter

Lane is as close to being in "the middle of our campus"

as Clemson's is...

my thoughts exactly

They need a better excuse.. and excuse the grammatical error *their

i know a lot of the faculty are against football games on a school night. maybe they went to steger and he talked to weaver, but who knows.

speaking of

I had a 2:30 and the teacher made us come to class to watch the most pointless movie and took attendance for a quiz grade. I hated her for that.

I had a 5PM Statics class

And we had to turn homework in. Needless to say, most of the class took a zero on that assignment.

My Thursday profs

were usually really cool about it. One made his 8:00 am optional (which I went to because I loved the class/material) while the others would simply either cancel or let us out halfway through. I would be back at my friends' (later my) place on Center St. by 12:30 drinking a pre-tailgate beer. I only had one professor who had class with no alteration (my freshman year vs Maryland). I took a "long bathroom break" during the last 20 minutes of class. Funny how I ended up back at my dorm instead of the class...

That's what I was thinking. The teachers always hated that we had games on school nights, but most of mine are understanding. My teacher last year for the FSU game told us "There will be class on Thursday, but if you don't show up then there's nothing I can do about it."

Rip his freaking head off!

I had Real Estate Law on the thursday night of the BC game in 07. Teacher made it optional, extra credit if you showed up. It was a 3pm-4pm class. I basically walked from my tailgate to class (which was in Engel Hall next to West End), filled up a poweraid bottle with "power aid" and sat in class and got my extra cred. He ended class early and it was back to the parking lot. Alot of other students in that class had the same idea. ha

Weaver contradicts himself?

This is lifted from David Teel's piece, here:

First Weaver says:

“It was simply a request on behalf of our fans,” Weaver said...

Then, two paragraphs later:

Weaver said that the logistical challenges of clearing campus early for weekday home games played no role in the decision, adding that the athletic department did not survey ticket-holders and was not prompted by central administration.

So did the department get a handful of emails and calls from upset fans who have work the next morning? That was enough to prompt them to make this change?

If that's the case, shouldn't a handful of emails and calls from upset fans about other issues result in change?

I call bullshit on this.

Row Z forever.

two things

I'm glad Weaver gave an explanation, and it at least seems like he did it for a good reason (perceived fan hardship). And I'm glad Beamer wants it this way.

Still unhappy, and I wish Weaver would go with the aparrent majority of fans rather than the vocal minority (see: banning stick it in, asking for no Thursday night game). However, I know it's possible that not everyone who goes to the games shares the same mind as tkplayers, so maybe I'm wrong

RIP Stick It In

He needs an explanation for his explanation

My original comment ASSUMED they've gotten calls/emails about Thursday night games. We don't know for sure.

He doesn't say how the request from fans was fielded. He DOES say they didn't ask season ticket holders.

I have a big problem with that.

Row Z forever.

I am not a fan of banning stick it in or asking for no Thursday night games, but from a business standpoint his goal isn't to make the students happy, it's to make the Alumni and boosters happy. The students will go no matter when the game is, so he really doesn't care what makes us happy.

Rip his freaking head off!

I agree

that his goal is to make alumni and boosters happy.

But he explicitly says he didn't reach out to them!

Row Z forever.

Isn't the story he got like 6 or 8 emails and banned stick it in? That's a ridiculously low percentage of people. Of course, if they were the 6 biggest donors, that would be understandable

RIP Stick It In

I really hope not...

but it wouldn't surprise me.

Hokies Respect!

Row Z forever.

Something closer to 14, from what I've heard

"Students will go no matter when"

I theory this is true. But in all honesty the students would fill up for a Thursday nighter against UNC. A UNC game at noon? Not so sure.

I can deal with no Thursday night game provided Weaver bans noon kickoffs and reinstates Stick It In.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Weaver doesn't control kickoff time.

That is 100% ESPN's call.

Didn't Michigan have a really long streak of no night games? Backwards, but similar situation. Also different conference, traditions, etc.

RIP Stick It In

That's different.

They didn't even have lights in their stadium until 2010 or 2011. New AD took over in 2010, said "LET THERE BE LIGHTS", and then in September of 2011 they played Notre Dame.

It's kind of hard for ESPN to schedule a night game if they don't have lights.

Weavers quotes (Since the article is now paid):

“We have been a great partner, and Thursday nights have been great for us,” Weaver said Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the ACC released next season’s schedule. “But it just wasn’t fair to have a game every year where so many fans couldn’t come and had to sell their tickets.”

“It was simply a request on behalf of our fans,” Weaver said, “something I thought we needed to do to say ‘thank you’ to them for being so good to us on Thursday nights over the years.”

Hey Weaver!

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

I think Weaver lied. I think Weaver went by his gut feeling and that's the same gut feeling that led to the firing of Seth Greenberg. I think he has completely lost his mind.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

This just seems really odd. I have been to several Thursday night games. IMO the best ones to attend. I am a season ticket holder and that has always been the fav game of the season. I have never seen the stadium where it didn't look packed. This is so odd to me but hey he is the AD so he knows more than me.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

For a while, my dad would sell his

Thursday tickets, then one year (2005, maybe?) it was a marquee matchup and he decided to go. He hasn't missed one since, and is kinda pissed we don't have one this year.

I can't imagine most of Hokie Nation feels much differently about them.

The two first games that go on my calendar? The home opener and Thursday night in Lane.

No matter what is going on at school, in Richmond, or with my friends, I'm in Blacksburg. And all my friends know it. Those are the two games I refuse to miss.

And I'm pretty sure many of the season ticket holders feel the same. There is absolutely nothing better than Thursday night at Lane Stadium. I don't think any Tech fan would dispute that.

So Weaver messed up. Big time.

the 50+ were the ones that ultimately complained the most about Thursday night games. I was told at last years Thursday night game it might be our last here in blacksburg for a few years. some were a little tired of games starting at 9 and not ending to after 11, then leaving and not arriving back at home until the the early morning hours for the ones that travel after games. this group of people is also some of your main donors, and we know how weaver likes looking at black numbers. this was a money decision to keep a inflow of money after a poor year. This had nothing to do with class or on-campus clearing conflicts. Just trying to keep the money paying people happy. I know most of us are money paying people, but is this really going to keep you from getting season tickets or coming to noon games(didn't think so.) Weaver knows this about his most loyal fans(TKP nation among others.)This was a decision that was very thought out and not a spare of the moment type deal.

So, if you want to send a message, don't buy season tickets. I don't see that happening though

super duper senior status

Write a letter too

If you just don't buy tickets, that'll likely be seen as you lost interest after a down year. If you really want to do that, make sure you let them know specifically that you aren't getting season tickets because of the lack of Thursday games.

Though I do doubt that anyone would actually drop their season tickets over it.

I completely understand the donor reasoning and comtributions that are made, etc. With that said there are two categories : those that want a Thursday night game, and those that don't. In my opinion the goal should be to accommodate everyone's wishes, since we are all Hokies. Completely eliminating home Thursday night game totally throws a huge majority that like Thursday night games under the bus. It's only on game a year.... To me having one Thursday night game and the rest of the schedule as early Saturday kick offs would have balanced things out fairly for all that want a Thursday night game, and for those that hate traveling late after games (you would only have to do it once a year). If I am a student, let alone a senior, I am very upset at this.

In the end I guess the Mr and mrs moneybags donor that have the power to push dollars around get their way, and those that enjoy the moments and specticles of Thursday nights in lane get the shaft

Pardon my French but it just seems hooish to me..

not dropping

I am definitely not dropping my season tickets however I usually bring some business folks to enjoy the atmosphere each year and this is definitely going to be a down year unless Pitt or UNC are big games.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

National Spotlight

Does he not see the MASSIVE benefit that the Thursday night game has on recruiting and national exposure. A big outing on a Thursday night can really sway some voters who wouldn't normally have watched us on a Saturday due to a busy schedule. Yeah the recruits can't come to the game but every high schooler wants to come to a program that has national exposure. It has been extremely beneficial to us for the past years and I am bummed it is gone.

I kind of feel that it is mostly a knee jerk reaction to all the talk about last season with our Monday night GT game then Miami and FSU both on Thurs. Last season made them all feel uncomfortable.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

As some others have said, I'd be willing to bet that Weaver's reasoning is based on input from fans that have a large amount of influence (aka MONEY) on the athletics program.

That being said, I actually don't mind the fact that we won't be having a Thursday night home game this year. Don't get me wrong, I always had fun pre-gaming and the crowds were usually fantastic while I was a student, but by my final football season (2010) it just didn't feel the same as the first one (2006).

I think the high-profile nature of Thursday night games is being overstated on the board here also. The oversaturation of college football is at an all-time high & I don't think it means as much to our program any more. When they first started scheduling them, it was definitely a benefit in exposure - but now, Virginia Tech is a name in college football (moreso for being on the cusp of greatness, but never quite achieving it) and the need for that exposure isn't as important a factor. More than anything though, I think the fun of these games is that they are NIGHT games. If fans were assured of a scheduled Saturday night game, I'm not sure there'd be a big stink about all this in the first place.

And finally, as much as I hate to say it, I think it's another big indication of how entitled our fanbase has become to freak out over the decision not to have a Thursday home game this year. It's not like they will be gone forever, it's just going to be more infrequent... so when they do happen, you know for sure that the crowd will be rabid and it won't be taken for granted.
