....2014 could still very well be one of VT's best recruiting classes. We have an opportunity to fill several need positions with very high quality players with the remaining scholarships we have available. We have a reasonable shot to land the following players that we are pursuing:
Defensive Tackles: Derrick Nnadi, Ricky Walker
Offensive Tackles: Brady Taylor
Running Back: Shai Mackenzie
Wide Receiver: Noah Brown, Cam Phillips
Linebacker: Jay Payton, Brandon Lee, Raymon Minor
Tight End: Ryan Izzo
Defensive Back: Greg Stroman, Lamont Simmons
Brady Taylor: He's the offensive tackle in this class. Looks good on film, and will have a chance to compete for a spot in the 2-deep early.
Cam Phillips: WR is a position of need, and he is a a very good one. Has the quickness to play the slot and the size and speed to play outwide. Probably will figure in at kick returner.
Greg Stroman: VA product who will play CB. Has great acceleration and top-end speed. Apparently has long arms (a la Jayron Hosley) which I always like to hear.
We all know about those defensive tackles. Those guys are must gets. They fit perfectly into our scheme, and would be dominant on the inside. Even though Marshawn Williams is beast mode, Shai Mackenze is a very good RB prospect from PA being recruited by Pitt and FSU. It would nice to land him and get some depth at the position again. I think Noah Brown is the best offensive player on our board. He is silky smooth with the ball in his hands - - he reminds me of DJ Coles in how his cuts are so effortless - - and he's actually a very good receiver. Jay Payton, Brandon Lee, and Raymon Minor are all big, mean Linebackers. Lee and Minor are both 6'3", close to 220 lbs, and extremely athletic. Jay Payton is also tall and rangy, but already weights almost 235 after a year in prep school. I want this kid to be a big mean Mike - - he's all over the ball on film (granted, nobody can block him). Ryan Izzo is a athletic, tall tight end from NJ that can line up all over the field- - it looks to me that he is exactly what Loefller wants out of his H-backs. Lamont Simmons is a big, tall CB from Florida who has offers from everyone.
If (When) we can close on most of those guys, despite some of the earlier disappointments, this would be a very, very good class.
To those recruits, if you're reading this: just come on down and win a National Championship in 2015. You heard it here first. You'll also love Blacksburg. We all promise.
(Seriously, with that, 2015 will be our best team since 2005 I think. I'll probably do a post on the potential 2015 depth chart soon).
