There's been much chatter over the years regarding Jim Weaver's tenure as AD. This, along with some recent discussion of the Director's Cup, prompted this post. The Director's Cup is a rating system that ranks schools according to overall performance in ALL sports. I combined these standings (which go back to 1994) with the ranking of VT's football and basketball teams over that same period to produce this graph:
NOTES:
- Each point on the graph is the end of the academic years, so, e.g., 1994 is the 1993-94 year.
- The scale is 1-N, where 1 is the best.
- Weaver was hired in Sep. 1997.
- VT became a member of the ACC in Jul. 2004.
- Whit was hired in Jan. 2014, so I claim his first year is 2014-15.
- For FB/BB rankings, I used the final AP poll for that year.
- When VT teams were unranked by AP, I used Sagarin.
- Sagarin BB rankings began in 1998-99, so there is no earlier data.
- VT BB was ranked #22 in 1995?, but I didn't include that, since there's a gap in the data.
Director's Cup Ranking Stats:
Period | Avg. Rank |
---|---|
Pre-Weaver | 100 +- 14 |
Weaver (all years) | 58 +- 24 |
Weaver(ACC) | 42 +- 7 |
I also worked up this graph of the ACC coastal teams' director's cup rankings since VT joined the ACC:
I won't attempt to interpret the data myself, but hopefully this is some factual fodder for discussion.
