So, today is the "Cobia freedom" day. This means that if federal regulators had their way, cobia fishing would be closed in state waters for Virginia and North Carolina starting today. It was unjustified. We fought it- showing that the closure wasn't the result of an increased catch. Instead, regulators (at the behest of South Carolina aquaculture interests) gerrymandered boundaries using science that we refuted thanks to a genetics study from Texas A&M. As result, Virginia and North Carolina kept cobia fishing open in state waters. You can learn more about the fight here. I apologize for my brutal quote. We celebrated yesterday with a sight fishing trip on the Bay. I think the cobia knew I was on the boat, because they were very skitterish yesterday. We saw over 20 fish, with several between 50-70 pounds, but could not get them to eat. I managed to hook up one 40 pounder, but he spit the hook. After cruising from Little Creek, to the Inner Middle Grounds, and then over to Kiptopeke without getting one to eat. A charter captain (Zach Hoffman from Salt Treated Fishing who did the cobia show with George Poveromo on ESPN) radioed us and let us know they were fishing a huge school of big red drum that they were fishing with fly rods. We headed over and I managed this one on a bucktail. Two other fellas on our boat got a couple each on Hopkins spoons.
