The Snapchat opens with warm up and drill work. Wyatt Teller and Eric Gallo are doing footwork drills. This highlights an issue I have with Vance Vice and most college offensive line coaches. This technique (butt down, good center of balance, short quick choppy steps) is fine for improving pass pro fundmentals. But, they are moving forward, which means this is a run blocking drill. Zone blocking coaches want the OL to stay engaged and move the defender laterally, so balance and being athletic enough to stay engaged is more valued than drive blocking. However, when VT's interior OL struggled, it was often Eric Gallo displaying poor pad level and being driven into his own backfield. To me, this drill reinforces bad pad level with the displayed technique.
It wasn't a good practice start for Devine Deablo. The young safety got caught guessing on a footwork drill, and then Cam Phillips breaks his ankles in a tackling drill where, you guessed it, Deablo guessed on Phillips path. Phillips looks primed for a huge season. He is blocking well, making plays in the passing game, and doesn't appear to have lost speed with his added mass.
Wyatt Teller had a beautiful rep to stonewall Ricky Walker in pass protection.
Eric Kumah got into Facyson's cushion and drove back to the ball on an outside hitch. Kumah impresses me with his ability to sell the route and work back to the ball on a cut. I don't see him as a vertical threat yet, but he looks like he can be a solid possession receiver.
If any eyes are not deceiving me, Kyle Chung is again working at first team right guard. Braxton Pfaff was with the 2 offensive line.
Both Jackson and Bush were working with the ones and the twos, along with Wheatley and Peoples working with both groups. Keene seems to be settled in behind Cunningham as the second Hback at this point as he learns. It was difficult to get much out of this work except that the offense got some seams for the running game.
I can't figure out who the #2 left tackle is. It looks like he is wearing #71 and could be Moore or Jackson. But, #71 isn't listed. Help my eyes folks!
