The Elite11 produced a two-minute video interview with 2018 Virginia Tech QB commit Quincy Patterson.

This was a 3 minute video, but they sped his voice up to make it under the 2:20 time limit /s

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Is he actually one of the 11 or is he one of the several dozen QB's invited to the 'finalist' camps that the actual Elite 11 are then picked from?

edit: answered my own question. He's been invited to the Elite 11 Finals which consists of 24 players. The "Elite 11" (sometimes 12) are selected from this group.

Elite 11 Finals

The "Elite 11" (sometimes 12) are selected from this group.

So it's more like the Big Ten than the Big 12. Gotcha.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Or is it more like the Big East, where no one really knows who was invited, people keep showing up and leaving, and then finally a group of players just leave and start their own competition?

A couple of tidbits I hadn't seen posted on TKP:

  • We made the top 10 for 5* DE KJ Henry from NC. Not holding my breath on it but you never know.
  • Had a recent visit from 2019 DE Brandon Smith from Mineral, VA. I didn't realize he is as highly ranked but his 247 composite has him as a 4* with a score of .9574. He's currently the 106 ranked player in the 2019 class. That would be a great pick-up.
  • Seems like another big recruiting weekend in store this weekend. Maybe the biggest I have heard of is 4* LB Payton Wilson from NC. Crystal balls heavily favor UNC, but apparently he likes CBF and this is his last visit before he announces his commitment on May 1st. Also, 3* CB Rayshad Williams is set to visit this weekend. We are in the top 2 for him with Tenn. Would be interesting to have a 6'4" CB.

I know there are other recruits coming but can't remember off the top of my head. I would love to pick up some new commits as the HS Spring break visits start to wind down. Happy TKPing!

Wilson is so big. I like Fuente's odds to sway him. At least enough to delay his decision. Just showing any tape from Tremaine should show Wilsons potential for us.

How are we feeling about our chances with Dax these days?

Heavy VT lean but he is taking the Hunter path and is gonna enjoy the ride. Got to keep showing him love

Thanks, good info. Glad to see we are getting into the mix with a lot of these kids.

Just saw that 4* ATH Tre Turner is visiting on Tuesday. An earlier article said he would visit along with CB DJ Crossen and unoffered 6'5" WR Nigel Fitzgerald. Nigel and Crossen were HS teammates of Hooker. Turner and Crossen are both apparently close with Mook. Hope this turns into something good...

Also, I'm trying to contain my excitement about our possible receiver class for 2019. BAG said somewhere that we would be going after size this class and it seems like it might be working. Here are some receivers that we are in the lead for:

4* Tre Turner (ATH/WR) 6'4"
4* Dillon Spalding 6'2"
4* Dyami Brown (ATH/WR) 6'2"
3* Kyle Pitts (TE) 6'5"
3* James Mitchell (TE/WR) 6'4"
3* Armani Chatman 6'0"

Pair those guys with Pimpleton running around in the middle creating havoc and we could have a fun offense to watch...

That'd be quite a sight. Hope we can get some of these tall guys.

wonder if Nigel's going to be 6'8 like Buckly /S

The potential is impressive, but remember in a recruiting class you get 1/3 studs, 1/3 contributors, and 1/3 duds. I didn't believe it to be true, but it seems to hold water. I hope we see better stud development and less duds.

the Fla T/U looked at its top 100 over the course of several years and it was almost exactly 1/3; 1/3; 1/3.

But, but how big are their hands?

“I turned down 12 other opportunities. You know what I mean?” - Fuente

Dyami Brown is a MUST. Not only is he a stud, but his younger brother Khafre Brown is a top 10 RB in the 2019 class.

Jamal Elliott and James Mitchell visiting today with Tre Turner on Tuesday. All important and good to see we are getting this talent regularly through blacksburg.

perfect weather weekend too! Mother nature is smiling on fuente

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Not sure how much we are really in the fight for KJ Henry, I know we made his top 10, but with Xavier Thomas committing to Clemson that could possibly help our chances. Can't say for sure though, perhaps they sell them on being the next great DE tandem and it actually helps Clemson land him, who knows, too soon to tell.

I would be surprised but not shocked. I've heard he likes Bud, and if defensive coaching is high on his priority list that gives us a huge advantage. I'm trying to stay calm and not get too hopeful, but he would be such a great recruit, his film is fun to watch.

Agreed. I feel like depth and competition might play into it as well. I'm not sure what UNCheat has at the backer spots but after some of the guys we picked up last year and depending on what Dax does that could play into his decision more in the long run...

Also I noticed that 247 has a countdown for his commitment set for 3 weeks from now. Regardless of what he chooses (way too much time for a flip) I'm hopeful that UNCheat will completely screw the pooch this Fall and some of the guys that are looking at them and us (ie. Wilson, Turner, Dax, etc) will recognize them as the eternal basketball school that they are. As much as I want a little better competition in the Coastal I would rather all the NC schools crash an burn so we can mop up their recruticorns. Besides I think we'll have our hands plenty full with Miami over the next several years.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Would like our odds more if we'd have more success with LBs getting drafted. Maybe Maine can start a trend.

Yep, unfortunately this is an easy place for opposing coaches to point. Clemson's best selling points on defense are "look how many guys we've sent to the NFL the last three years from all three levels of our defense" and it's paying off on the recruiting trail. They've landed 5 stars at all three levels in the last few years and are continuing to do so. I do think Tremaine will get drafted pretty high so that should help start the trend.

One thing in our favor against UNC is that they have a new DC so claiming any past success at the position can be easily countered.

Teradja Mitchell. Thoughts, expectations? The guy hits like a freight train.

247 has him as a heavy FSU lean with Ohio State following.

He's not coming . We are going after Dax

He kind of strikes me as the Khalan Laborn of this year's class; 757, blue chip recruit, tech people think he would make perfect sense to come to VT, but never really shows us much interest. I don't think we made his last top-whatever list.

While I would love to start keeping the top talent like him in-state, if we can land at least 2 of the following LBs; Payton Wilson, Dax Hollifiled, Alan Tisdale, Keshon Artis I think we will be in a good position going forward (especially with the LB group we pulled in last year).

Tajh capehart...enough said. We aren't getting anyone from Bishop Sullivan.

At least for a couple years until Tahj can be used as a cautionary tale for what happens when you do silly things, like committing to UMd.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

I assumed the Bishop Sullivan thing had something to do with it but I was hopeful someone would say different.

It isn't that though. Mitchell was a FSU lean for a long long time before the Cape thing happened and never gave us much of a look. Now OSU is in the mix, but either way, he was never a VT kid to get. The bishop sullivan thing can be saved for when we miss other recruits.

Like Tank?

No, "miss" is describing it too nicely.

That kid committed way to early. Then things went awry with Capehart.

I can't imagine being a high school kid and committing when he did. That's too early to be making such decisions. I realize it happens all the time, but I don't have to agree with it.

Definitely committed to VT early, but also referred to VT as his "dream school".

Does anyone know if VT is taking a look at Beck over at Blacksburg? He's been picking up some offers, most recently Boston College.

Wondered about that as well. His teammate and C/O 2019 athlete Tiquest Terry just recently got an offer from UVA. Beck isn't extremely shifty or big but his straight line speed is top notch and he runs hard. Terry IMO is the better prospect because he has that short area quickness and twitch. He's smaller than Beck, probably a step slower in a straight line race. Both fantastic football players who I wish well with college endeavors.

Agree with all of this. Got to watch them some my senior year, but Beck really burst on the scene this past season.

I could see Beck as a really great slot receiver. If he can get the ball with some open space, he will be dangerous every single play. Terry looks like a David Wilson Lite with how shifty he is and how athletic he is. I really hope Fuente give them both a good look.

This is a little off topic for this thread, but I was looking at 2019 recruits last night and I found my favorite...4* ATH/S from Alexandria, VA Litchfield Ajavon. He is my favorite because 1) his name is Litchfield, b) he has a strong mustache game, and iii) he hits like a truck. I couldn't believe this kid is a Sophomore, he looked more like a Senior playing with the JV squad. Here's to hoping we can keep this kid in VA.

Also in the awesome name competition for next year we have offered Hogwarts professor Quavaris Crouch, and the Three Muskateers Tayvion, Traveon, and Savion.

Not to be outdone, there are also some fantastic names in the 2018 class. Two of my favorites are Mr. Kavosiey Smoke, and my personal favorite, Bumper Pool (how have we not offered this kid?) Parents are awesome.

(as an aside, I mean no disrespect to these kids joking about their names...my middle name is Fehlber, so I have endured my share of ridicule)

Mr T. and Bust Rhymes heartily endorse Mr. Kavosiey Smoke.

I was really hoping Savion's last name was Blanc.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Paul Johnson.

The only TKPer to not like Bourbon

I believe Clemson is the favorite. It is great to get him on campus though. I wish Hunter was there today too.

I'm hoping that we wear the Hokie Stone unit for a game or two this fall. Recruits love them

ESPN updated their rankings, and the Hokies already have 3 top 300 commits. For context, we had 2 for the 2017 class.

5* RB Devyn Ford will be at Tech today

Keep calm, Gobble on

He would be an awesome get. Watching his tape is like watching Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl...

5* Devyn Ford is at Tech and then this happens?!

oh pls oh pls oh pls oh pls oh pls

no kidding, i'm pretty sure I peed myself when I put two and two together on that

Insider on another site says its not him though :(

I mean you don't have to give information from behind a paywall if you know who... buttttt if you happen to know a specific person who may be is visiting this weekend and that may or may not be the commit in question that would be fine.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

MRW I read it wasn't Ford

6'2" 209 lb WR transfering from Ball State to VT.

Looks like he played as a true freshman last year, so he would have to sit out a year.

Alright, alright, I'll take another body at WR.

Edit: what he said about sitting out

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

Someone tell me how I feel about this. As of this moment I am let down because I was expecting a flashy recruit (as all irrational reactions to vague good news tweets should be).

Generally, transfer like this mean the kid was either lowly recruited out of high school, went to a mid major, proved he could play and wants to go prove himself at the next level. Had he wanted to play, he could have just dropped to JUCO or 1-AA, but the transfer straight to Big Boy football is a good sign. 51 catches at any school is great, especially in only 9 games or so. He'll have a year to develop in our system and seems a good prospect.

It's whelming.

Maybe the other CB predictions made along with Joe will come true as well. I get the sense we could see another one by the end of the week. Any other speculators?

Couldn't make the spring game today unfortunately but I hope we win some recruiting battles today and our guys show that they have developed physically and as football players this spring. I pray that no players get in trouble for alcohol, drugs, or anything else this coming week...

should we expect any commitments today?

#3 player in VA Nana Asiedu committed to PSU today.

It's also interesting to note in looking at the responses to the tweet a lot of PSU fans were using the hashtag #VA2PSU. I don't really keep up with the twitterverse (as I don't have a twitter) but I'm guessing a lot of schools must be using the (other state)2(our school) moniker as well.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

He was considered a huge Clemson lean. This makes our hopes for Devyn Ford a bit better as PSU will have a crowded backfield and his tie to Clemson will be lessened.

This is good news for that reason. Asiedu to Clemson would make it that much tougher to get Ford.

FWIW sounds like Ford doesn't want to go the same school that Slade does, but doubt Penn State really recruits him anyway.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

If we don't improve OL recruiting no elite RB is going to come here.

Listened to XM college yesterday and a Hokie fan called into talk to a panel of recruit experts they had. He asked why VT struggled so much in recruiting OL, the panel said it's the hardest position to recruit when your not a blue blood, it costs the most to evaluate and recruit an OL, and they have the most busts. It's not an easy turnaround.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

By the numbers it should cost the most. More OL on the field than any other position unless we are playing 5 DBs. We just don't get enough offers out early enough and I don't know what our pitch to them is, but it isn't resonating. I can imagine our scheme and lack of dedication to the run game also could not be a major draw to top tier OL as well.

I do agree it's a hard position to recruit, but doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing everything we can to figure out how we can improve there. This can, and hopefully is, already being done but we aren't seeing the results as of yet.

It costs the most because most coaches won't offer an OL without seeing them in person thus more travel, more camps to get kids to come to, more staff spending time to watch film.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I think that's our approach, but don't think that is "most" coaches. A ton of the staffs that recruit much better than us offer without seeing them and offer earlier but they are just contingent offers and don't become firm until they come to a camp or visit. We haven't adopted that model.

100000000% agree

I'm guessing a lot of schools must be using the (other state)2(our school) moniker as well.

But.... but remember how all those VA high school coaches hated us using NC2VT and it would hurt us recruiting their schools?.....

247 Write-up on the DC Opening

So 247 posted this article yesterday on The DC Opening. One new name in particular caught my eye (at least new to me). Chris Tyree, an all purpose back from VA in the 2020 class, ran a 4.47 laser timed 40. Yep you heard me right. HE IS A FRESHMAN. Here's what 247 had to say about him...

NEXT FIVE OFFENSE

1. Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale 2020 running back Chris Tyree ran the fastest 40-time at the event, a laser-timed 4.47. Combine that with the elusiveness we saw in cat and mouse, a smooth, very shifty playmaker that will be one of the country's most highly-recruited prospects in his class. Tyree grew up liking Virginia Tech, was recently offered by Florida State and visited Maryland on Saturday.

According to 247 he's been sitting on an offer from us for almost a year already. Something tells me we'll be following his recruitment Devon Hunter style over the next several years.

Not a good start for NC2VT, especially when Wilson looks to go that way in a week too.

Need to lock up guys like Tre Turner, DJ Crossen, Alim McNeil, and Alan Tisdale to help strengthen our chances with a guy like Dax.

Yeah no kidding. Not loving our recruiting momentum right now, I would have loved to at least have one or two guys commit at the spring game.

The recruiting staff does various image edits for prospects. Quincy Patterson tweeted out a graphic of him getting drafted by Seattle, showing VT as his college, him in uniform, etc. It's just a push by VT to get the kids excited about possibilities for their futures and make them feel special.

Maybe we'll have the same result as Quincy. Visited recently as well. We need some momentum.

Have to make it somewhat realistic

Ya know, when a man works hard his entire life enduring hundreds of ladies, many of whom he does not even remember you'd like to think that at the end of the day he will be given a lot of money, without having had to earn it.

As a Browns fan I am finding these far too realistic.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

You assume last place. But, maybe the Redskins are instead a fringe playoff level team and simply trading their first round pick of the 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and the 7th round pick of 2026 to get this pick. Seems about right.

Nah, last place.

Interesting player - going to check out Hudl.

Calling this guy a WR is underselling him a bit. Check out his stats:
This past season, Sanders accounted for 313 points (42 TDs, 3 field goals, 52 point after kicks), while amassing 2,182 yards and 32 touchdowns rushing, averaging 167.9 yards per game. He also caught 16 passes for 479 yards with six touchdowns and completed 7-of-8 passing with two touchdowns, playing quarterback during the later part of the season and in the playoffs.

"On defense, he was involved in 24 tackles and had four interceptions, one he returned for a touchdown. In the kicking game, he converted 3-of-3 field goals, including a last play game-winning 47 yarder to beat New Brockton, and made 52-of-53 extra point kicks, while also averaging 39.2 yards per punt. He also returned one kickoff for a touchdown."

Run to Win. Pass To Score

Man. That block at the 2:40 mark of his Hudl tape. I hope that guy got up.

Man, getting a kid with that much production is a win. Best case scenario, he's the next great VT walk-on turned All ACC stud. Worst case scenario, he doesn't work out and we don't lose a scholarship. That's exciting.

Can we flip this kid please? Small school kid, outside of Lynchburg, Dogwood district (same as Edmunds brothers). Play #2 on his tape is against James Mitchell, whose very highly recruited. The kid is Adonis Alexander part two IMO. Been committed to NC State since last May when they were first school to offer him.

De'Von Graves Junior Highlights

A lot of people think he's a serious flip candidate.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."

I think he is a must get for the class. Seems like a perfect VT corner and he's as local as VT can get. With his size and speed he could get some serious pt year one with Facyson, Stroman and possibly Adonis gone.

Edit... I was wrong in area and even if my sources were from outside of the paywalls of other site, it was shared there as well I am wrong for sharing this information. I apologize and will be more discrete to ensure I do not cross the lines of hard working individuals who are paid for information like this.

Saw them both play last season and was most impressed with Sabias Folley.

As a sophomore, the kid is big! Runs low and with power. Changes directions well and has good speed for his size. The times I saw him, he straight wore down opposing defenses. He is the reason anyone else on that offense has success.

My only concern is that these guys might not play against a single D1 athlete the entire season, which would be one reason they look so good on Friday nights.

Is it football season yet?

There's been a decent amount of offers made in the last few days. Here's a compilation from 247. The ones I am most excited about are 6'4" WR Donte Demus from DC (a Maryland lean) and DT Jamion Franklin (Notre Dame lean). I guess that's what we get for coming late to the party, but who knows what will happen.

Also intrigued by 2019 QB Jalon Jones, DE Jaevon Becton, and 2019 OG Caedan Wallace.

Lastly, we don't seem to have anywhere near the momentum I was hoping for wrapping up our Spring practices. Seems like we are still in a good place with a lot of recruits, but I'm definitely worried the most about our line on both sides of the ball. I'm hoping we can land some quality commits over the next few months, then hope for another head turning year in the fall to get some guys to believe in the direction of our team. In Fuente I trust.

It may seem as if momentum is non-existent simply because recruits may be waiting to see if last year was a fluke, or if we are truly heading in the right direction. If I were a 17 year old recruit, I'd wait until the fall to really gauge it anyways.
