OT: 2017-18 Premier League Soccer thread

So the last 2016-17 thread was getting a bit long in the tooth so figured I'd start a new one for a fresh new season. FOOTBALL IS BACK

So far this years games have been beyond entertaining arsenal and Leicester and then Liverpool and watford and now Chelsea capitulating in style to the wee burnley what is happening!

Got my new Foxes Kit just in time to see them lose. But I'd rather stay a fan of team fighting every year than jump on the money wagons of the "top teams" Foxes Never Quit.

I don't have any dog in the fight for the Premier League, but you do realize that the owner of Leicester City is a Thai national multi-billionaire, right?

Just because they're not traditionally a "big club" doesn't mean they're some lowly frugal spender. Their story to win the Premier League title was amazing, but it only happens because ownership spent gobs of money to get them promoted so quickly.

Almost every owner of an EPL team is a multi millionaire or billionaire. The team also found some players others didn't and used those on a once in a human history run. Now I just hope they stay in the 3-9 range from here on out. But that's why I like them, it's fun it's exciting, Man U and Chelsea etc are disappointed in years they don't win the whole thing, I don't want that for my EPL team, I want to enjoy each game and the whole h football experience, the songs, the chants the fans, the fun on the pitch.

That's on the fan, not the club. I love all that stuff too.

Also didn't you become a Leicester follower during their title run?

Beginning of that season. Was between then and Crystal Palace. Had a thread on here helping me pick. Didn't want a front runner.

Fair enough. It's a lot easier to do that now that the games are on air more often than not. Used to be if you wanted to watch EPL, you were watching a 'big' team.

Everyone's got their reasons. Personally I picked Arsenal because I love the style that Wenger plays. I really enjoyed the way Swansea played a few seasons ago as well, it was very Arsenal like.

I never played soccer so play style I can't identify.

From champions to bottom of the table in one matchday...fantastic

Let's do this.

All things said, not a bad comeback, even in a losing effort for Chelsea being down 3-0 at halftime and down to 9 men with 15 to go.

I'd agree butttt it was burnley they have a nightmare going to Tottenham next week without Cahill for the next 3 games and no Fabregas next game atleast they'll be kicking themselves for selling matic and letting zouma and ake go so early

bald silva is really throwing me off

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I love Kolasinac. I also love that he was FREE.

Steve Mounie is an absolute steal for Huddersfield. Said it when they signed him. I know it's one game, but if they stay up, it'll be becuase him and cash in handsomely. Still pissed the deal between him and Fulham broke down last summer over a few million quid up front.

Always choose joy.

The promoted teams look better than I thought they'd fair Brighton made it tough and Huddersfield came out to kick butt, and everyone else's pick to get relegated beat Chelsea at home, full blown premier league wackiness

give it like 8 weeks until depth and consistency start taking over. early season is always a bit odd (albeit this has been crazy even for regular standards). I think theyll come back to earth a bit

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Of course they'll come back to earth a bit and of course the wheat will start to separate from the chaff. But points in august count the same as points in march and if Burnley can steal some more points away from home, they'll definitely win enough at Turf Moor to stay up. Having said that, I think the four teams most likely in the mix for relegation this year will be Brighton, Huddersfield, Swansea, and Watford.

wouldnt be shocked if southampton went down either. All of their selling will catch up to them eventually

I think that this could be the year for Stoke. And I really hope it is, screw those ogres and their boorish fans.

I think there's too much talent in the stoke xi for them to get relegated, unfortunately. Also yes, Southampton could also prove to be relegation fodder sooner rather than later.

United class today. That midfield is arguably the best in the world. Lukaku can easily score 30 with the service he'll get. Should be able to see off games this season, which has plagued them since Sir Alex left. Thoroughly impressed.

Always choose joy.

I'm a diehard united fan and that performance was phenomenal but modric, Kroos, and casemiro might have something to say about that midfield thought, but matic with a blinder of a performance and Pogba that first touch is oh so wonderful, so many positives today plus clean sheet that was what you want to see.

Also spare a thought for zabaleta my god he was everywhere doing everything I'm still surprised pep couldn't do anything with him if west ham feel good about anything I thought he was as good as he could be with the help he had

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

love zaba but hes slowed down immensly, hes solid but a fraction of his former self and i guarentee you itll show up by the end of the season.

manu looked really good today, as did tottenham. its early but it was definitely a statement game that theyre here to compete

Better to die a hero than see yourself become a villain retired by a 18 year old striker.

nonsense its not even the best in manchester.

arguable [ahr-gyoo-uh-buh l] adjective

2. susceptible to being supported by convincing or persuasive argument.

People will prefer Madrid, City's, ect. But for me: Pogba, Matic, Mata, Mkhitaryan pose a dynamic that is umatched in their ability to not only build an attack, but enforce the midfield and impose their style. The depth is UCL caliber in it's own right with Herrera, Fellani, Lingaard. Obviously, just my opinion, but Manchester United will be a force this season, in large part because of their midfield...and that Lukaku guy. He good.

Always choose joy.

United's midfield is no where close to as good as Real Madrid's, that's just silly speak.

As an everton fan it was pretty nice seeing wayne put one through at home. Also lukaku got me a good amount of points in fantasy as my captain. Overall, a pretty good week for everton and united

Ronaldo with the 5 game ban after pushing the ref yesterday.

They'll still win La Liga and the Copa del Rey, and probably the Champions League again, so don't feel too sorry for them.

Don't discount Barcelona yet. They just signed their savior Paulinho. /s Honestly their board is so bad that maybe they thought they were signing Phillipe Coutinho.

P. Coutinho

Poulinho
Paulinho

Chem PhD '16

Just to put this in comparison matic is 29 and for the same fee they got Paulinho

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

The price tag for Coutinho is 150m Euro (close to $200m). If they meet it they can have him. Is Poulinho the Brazilian Christian Poulsen?

First Classico I've watched this year and nice to see Suarez still knows how to dive and sell it and the ref was abysmal the game was just bout ruined by the bad reffing, I thought Ron cherry had snuck into FIFA reffing there, and I'm far from a Real Madrid fan I'm a neutral in the la liga

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

That was frustrating sequence. It was foolish of him to touch the ref, even if it was rather gently, but that call was horrendous, it was in no way a dive. The ref was awful for most of the second half. I can still picture Suarez rolling around for that soft pen where he didn't get touched by Navas leg at all.

The price for dembele and coutinho just went up 10 million after watching the last two clasicos

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

And Real Madrid beats Barca 2-0 without Ronaldo for the Super Cup.

Man, they are going to run away with La Liga this year.

Hard to win games with shocking refereeing like that. Pitiful.

2 handballs in the box (both in isolation not that bad) penalty on bellerin, penalty on welbeck, and called off goal on lacazette.

Walcott and iwobi subs were a joke
