PAGING ESHIBEN5 (ECLIPSE EDITION)

As everyone probably knows, the US is getting a solar eclipse Monday August 21st.

Any way we can get some info from our resident meteorologist about expected eclipse weather conditions in Charleston, Nashville/Knoxville, and KY (and anywhere else someone is interested)?

Thank you in advance.

Awesome. Do you have a preview since I'm trying to make my travel plans tonight?

Honestly, all I keep hearing is not to look at it, but telling me not to look at something means I am going to look at it immediately.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Im going to look at it I mean what could possibly go wrong?

Is It Luck?

Okay serious question I'm gonna be floating the new that day do I need sunglasses to look at it I've always heard use a piece of thin paper to look but I'm on a river which makes in challenging

Just put sunblock on in your eyes.

FTFY.

Where is Lawson?!

It's fine if I go blind I can't watch the Tech football or basketball games anyway cause I'm cursed

Is It Luck?

Huh, that's odd, because this would suggest Ron Cherry must have looked at an eclipse years back...

He was leading a PAC12 officials retreat hike at the time and told everyone to look.

So I'm an optometrist, and you would definitely not want a piece of paper. Get the eclipse glasses if you intend to look at it. The long term risk would be solar retinopathy which could permanently damage your central vision very similar to the way macular degeneration works.

Eclipse.aas.org is suppose to have glasses.

You can stack 4 sunglasses and stare directly at the sun with no harm! Add a 5th pair to be extra safe /s

Seriously, don't look at the sun without recommended filters unless your name is Stevie Wonder?

May as well cancel that trip. I'm fishing the New this weekend and am hoping to leave a trail of smallmouth on poppers devastation in my wake.

Going with a guide so I hope to stand a chance it'll be my first time I'm super stoked

95% of what I say is sarcastic. The other 5% is usually taken out of context.

If I watched the 2014 Wake Forest loss without damaging my eyes, I think I should be good here!

But the damage that was done to my soul is incalculable.

Charleston - partly cloudy scattered showers high ~85

Nashville - once more some scattered showers in the region however the chance of showers in SC are much higher than Tn. high ~88

Kentucky - once more scattered showers and a fair amount of cloud cover high around ~88

best bet would be Tn. but again this is 5 days out and you're asking for a mesoscale forecast this stuff can change on the drop of a hat so be warned that this could change. Due to the close calls on this I might hold off for a few days before I do a full write-up on "best to watch" areas

I like to think the title here has all the capital letters that the Shibe left out of his Fantasy Football post, but reality is not that kind.

Nah Im finally in my new apartment with my desktop so I dont have to do EVERYTHING on my phone anymore. (you have no idea how big of a pain in the ass a full write-up is on a phone)

I'm just messin' with ya. I'm really looking forward to reading the weather report, even though I'll be stuck watching an only ~65% eclipse myself.

Got my glasses here in Charleston. There's a black market here for these things now. A friend's company bought 20 glasses yesterday for $180, woof.

A friend of a friend lived in Vegas for the last eclipse there. Bought crates of the glasses (for something like $0.20 a pair) and sold them for $20 a pop on the strip in the days before. Made 5 figures off of good planning.

Be careful they aren't counterfeit. There are many out there that won't protect. You definitely can go blind.

Is this "Solar" filter you speak of closer to the Gingham filter or the Valencia?

I'm trying to avoid buying a 300$ pair of glasses but I'll probably just avoid looking I'm too poor to buy them now that the whole eclipse black markets taken control

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

If you trust your timing, it's totally safe to look at the fully eclipsed event moment. It's everything before and after that'll get you.

How much??? I have 12 we got for free from local hospital.

Go online and look cheapest pairs are going about 200$ now

Great so now I'm in a moral dilemma, do I sell the pair given to me by the hospital or do I sell them?

You can buy welding goggles/glasses for about $20 bucks. Get shade 12 or 13.

Plus we will look way cooler than the people with the cardboard glasses.

I have some of those, use them with the cutting torch. Incredibly stylish.

Just make sure it is AT LEAST 12. I have even heard to try to find 13 because 12 may still be just a bit too bright. It will still protect your eyes though.
