Why couldn't all this madness with coaches happen in a year where we still had a lot of slots still open, hopefully it will give us a big head start on next season!! Go ULM!

There now it's official!

Can we take a ton of transfers, stash them on the Track team for a year while the sit out the year, that way they don't count towards our 85?

Yes, but that's not great for our track team.

Sacrifices must be made

Who won the National championship in Track last year?

It is if they're fast as fuck

And this thread is already adding up lol

Made the top 7 for 2019 4* S/ATH Litchfield Ajavon. We're up against some big schools. Not super hopeful but he would be a huge recruit.

Now there's a name

For the all name team, I want Buzzketball to land Akok Akok, and Kofi Cockburn.

I've seen his tape before. Would love to get this guy.

This is why I was hoping DD was leaving. He recruits well but can't win more than 8 games a year. He will be gone in three years and all this great talent will be stuck at NCST.

I feel like Eccleston actually did a really good job but the writing and production in that season are practically unbearable...

I had seen a few episodes and liked them, so I started back from the beginning to watch through...I almost gave up before I made it out of that season.

So we have an in home w/ KJ right before his official to 'Bama. Hmmm

Also is Elijah Davis someone we are pursuing?

Has McFadden made his final decision?

Does Dax have a decision date?

Lastly, where do we sit with Ben Smiley?

I'll add one more. If Taggart leaves Oregon, can we get back in the door with Jamal Elliott?

@Fightin_Gobbler

Go Hokies

Go Falcons

Nah fam. That ship sailed. If Taggart leaves Oregon, Elliott either stays at Oregon or follows him to FSU.

I think Davis depends on how the class closes out. If we hit on a good amount of our remaining targets (especially Grant), I don't see him getting an offer. Great player though. Would rather have him than Steward and probably Beck.

McFadden got hurt over the weekend and has said he's putting his decision on the back burner until he gets a diagnosis. I read that as waiting for clemson to decide if he has a commitable offer, especially with the new injury news.

Dax is visiting stanford the weekend of Jan 12, and a decision will come immediately after. Still feel great there.

We sit very very well with Smiley. Wouldn't surprise me to see him commit soon.

I agree.... and to add to this, don't be surprised to see some old names come back up with all the coaching changes, nothing too exciting and it may just be conversations but VT could really have to do some shuffling with the numbers by the end of this thing.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Clemson wishes they were getting an official from Dax, think you meant Stanford. One of my favorite recruiting news over the past couple years has been when Dax posted a video of burning a piece of wood with Clemson on it before the ACC Champ game against VT last year.

Ya that video is what made dax my all time most wanted recruit, regardless of stars or position (although that doesnt hurt)

Great player though. Would rather have him than Steward and probably Beck.

yep.

Both the Co OC and the DC at Clemson have been mentioned as interesting picks for some HC openings.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Could happen but the momentum really hasnt taken off for them yet... everyone is in offensive coaching mode with their choices. The OC would go first but I don't see that till next year.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Both of their co-OC's are just running a more conservative and run-heavy version of Chad Morris' offense (they still use the same playbook). Will be interesting to see what happens if Clemson loses one or both of them.

I've always thought if Venables leaves, he would bring one of their co-OC's with him. That would be a pretty good start for a team. Hopefully Arkansas listens to me.

I just want Devyn Ford to commit already and get this 2019 class rolling

Keep calm, Gobble on

Nah, I will always be with the player here. He is just a kid, enjoy the free trips till he gets tired of them then come on home. I don't want this guy to regret seeing other options two months before signing and leave us hanging.

2018 4* TE James Mitchell announced his decision date:

While he has his list narrowed down to three: VT, UGA, and Duke, most people around here believe it is between Hokies and Duke. He is a heavy VT lean according to #sauces and I tend to agree with this.

Wiles and Vice were at his final game Saturday. I wasn't there but word was he got a lot of attention afterwards.

FWIW, the VHSCA All Star Football Dinner is that day (Dec 15th) at the Inn at Wise which is 15 minutes from Union High. The guest of honor at the event is Frank Beamer.

In the pic, I couldn't tell if it was Wiles or Shibest. Fuente and Shibest were at the Central-Union game earlier in the year.

I knew Beamer was going to be in Wise, but had no idea what for. What are you driving a Ferrari lol?

Sadly no on the Ferrari. But I could pick him up in a Polaris Ranger and drive him around the parking lot a few times if everyone thinks that will help. Anyone got any Hardee's coupons to sweeten the pot?

In all honesty he's a great kid and everything I've heard says he's a heavy VT lean, but who knows. I know his dad well as he coached me in high school, and I see him often wearing a VT hat around town. It would be awesome if he stays in VA. James has really progressed as a player this year and I think he could be a huge asset for the Hokies moving forward. I guess we'll find out next Friday.

Guys at 247 are reporting that Culver's OSU offer isn't commitable yet. He's visiting Blacksburg this weekend and hopes to sign in December. Timing could be working out perfectly for the Hokies.

Wiltfong is one of the most important insiders nationally and just put in a cb to us. Depending how McFadden plays out, this could be an excellent OL class

I noticed that Clemson has been getting CB's for 5⭐️ OT Cade Mays lately. I wonder if that will impact whether or not McFadden's offer is committable?

As a content generator, I appreciate that each site has their niche and that niche has to be a revenue generator. Our contributors have a niche, other sites have theirs, and content that is paywall protected keeps the lights on for everyone. Please consider that and be judicious.

I want all the recruiting news I can get. With this net neutrality issue, its only a matter of time before were paying for everything online. Its recruiting news, if a pay wall site has info, who's to say other people haven't been tipped off with info as well. Ive always loved TKP, but recruiting info is the main draw for me for TKP. Thanks to all the recruiting info shared, I care way too much about it.

Ive been around recruiting boards long enough to know that people calling out others for posting paywall info are sometimes just upset trolls from other sites trying to pose as current undergrads/recent grads.

Pour some Beer on it

I can see it both ways. If you have legit sources and they share information with you that's great. However when certain 247 paid subscriber VIP recruiting news gets posted then shortly after it gets re-worded and placed here its somewhat a slap in the face.

Say Ffrench were to post a TKPC article then someone over on 247 copied and pasted that into a 247 thread I'm sure a lot of opinions would be thrown around and not necessarily nice opinions.

I don't see any problems as long as credit is given

Recruit Prosim

I see people all the time acting like they know stuff on other boards after ffrench has posted. They don't give his breakdown credit, which is irritating. But it is done all the time.
You said, "copy and paste", which is what the OP was agreeing is wrong. But a concept, general idea or information from a message board, paid or otherwise, might be a different animal entirely.

It's also on tweets by 247 writers, all over OSU fan twitter and I assume OSU fan sites.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I know the numbers always work out, but does anyone have a legit explanation on how? FUMA, walk-on? If we get even half of our remaining targets we will be well over the limit...

Early enrollees that count towards last year.
I show that Tech signed 18 guys for 2017. So they could apply 7 of this year's class as early enrollees to count towards the 25 max for last year. They had 8 early enrollees this year that ended up counting for 2016.
That means we could legitimately take 10 more commits I believe. They will have to finagle the totals to get to the total of 85 by the following:

Existing players who transfer or quit football, or go pro early. Yes FUMA. Losing a guy last minute who is currently committed.

24 committed. If 7 count toward last year as early enrollees, Beck starts on track scholarship, and we assume something gets worked out with Oscar Shadley the long snapper, the math would check out and we could add up to as many as 10 more.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I also thought Wiles didn't have an undershirt at first when I saw this. Glad I'm not the only one.

Wiles about to go clubbing.

That's why asked if the bump was in the composite or by 247. Like you said the composite is old news.

We are gonna have a lot of running backs if Davis/Grant commit and Ford is our number one target for the 19 class. Wonder if that is a potential area of attrition this offseason?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Depending on how the class ends up, there could definitely be a big off-season to trim the fat to some of the guys who wont see the field. I hate to see it but we are on the verge of seeing attrition being a normal thing.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Tmac has implied to some people that he'll be moving on. Wouldn't surprised to see some of the guys lower on the depth chart follow suit. Honestly, I'm pretty confused on roster management at the RB position. If we flip Grant, we could have almost as many as 10% of our scholarships next year be allocated to the RB position. That would be ok if there were a lot of quality depth, but with mediocre players, I'm not a huge fan of that strategy.

I'll hold my reservations but who do you consider to be "mediocre" ?

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

We don't have a single game-breaking RB on the roster. McMillian, Peoples, McClease, Holston, Fox, then adding marginal players like Steward and Beck, and maybe even 1 more RB even depending on how recruiting numbers work out this season leave us with a lot of bodies on scholarship and no clear depth chart. I agree its way to many guys who aren't full-time caliber backs or homerun threats

I didn't disagree that we don't have any true RB1's or "home run threats".... just getting his opinion because it doesn't just go from home run threats to mediocre when it comes just to rating a guy

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

No one you'd need to gameplan around might be better than specifically 'home run threat,' then.

We need to sign Ford next year and let half of those other guys move on.

mediocre sounds worse than it is. mediocre = average = not a standout in either a good or bad way

obviously when building a team to win the ACC you want better than average players at every position

MEDIOCRE!

We're gonna play a lot of RB's with Fuente's system, just like Clemson does.

Hasn't hurt them too much.

"When you're green, you're growing. When you're ripe, you rot." -Ray Kroc

It would be nice if a few were above avg at 2 or 3 (or more) key RB skills - like say, speed, size, vision, explosiveness, hands, pass blocking, make defenders miss in space, etc.

We can have both quality and quantity if we recruit better again. How do you think Fuente would have done with Evans, Williams and Wilson in the backfield together.

I wish we had a player on Entiene's caliber

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

one of my favorite players to watch, that dude is a legit threat to break one every time he touches it. was real close to breaking one against us this year that would've made the game pretty ugly.

People love to blame the RB's but you need an offensive line to block for them. I dont disagree that we aren't loaded with RB talent but the line can make a bad back look good and a good one look bad

The holes have been there this year. We have seen it on a several of the game tape reviews put up by the TKP staff. There doesn't seem to be a RB on the roster capable of exploiting them consistently.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Bingo. Its been a consistent theme on the french breakdowns after every game. The holes are there, the backs are missing them by overrunning the play or making the wrong cut.

One thing I noticed about Peoples this year is his ability to seemingly pick up 3 yards any time he touches the ball. A part of this is because he's consistently hitting the holes. Its fun to think how much more explosive the offense could be if we had someone with just a little more quickness and burst who could hit those holes as well. At the very least, defenses wouldn't be able to pin their ears back and just rush the QB every play, they'd have to respect the run, which would open up the rest of the offense.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Yeah like I said, you can find individual plays and make slow-mo vids showing how a running back fails to hit the proper hole or make someone miss, but our issues running the ball are systemic and the offensive line is absolutely part of the problem. French has also highlighted the terrible form and poor leverage we are using in run blocking, so you can't just pick and choose which things you want to harp on. The running backs haven't been great, the OL has also not been doing their job. Creating holes sometimes =/= the level of consistent push we need from our OL to have a trustworthy run game. There's a reason you and I, and every other hokie fan is nervous as hell on 3rd and short, because we have seen so many running plays fail to make it out of the backfield in those situations in the last two years. There were also a bunch of statistics where we were dead last in P5 centered around running the ball last year. We need either an uptick in OL talent or a change in technique from the coaches, hopefully both.

You're right, its "Both/And" with the RB/OL situation. But to the point made above, the OL is as good as its been in a half dozen years or more and we still have an anemic running game. I fully buy into the fact that it is due, in part, to the lack of vision or power or quickness of the VT RBs.

Also, and to your point, I live here in Harrisonburg and watch JMU play regularly... Their OL is miles ahead of where the VT OL is. They are big, athletic, they stay on blocks, they drive people off the ball... I know the default opinion would be that they play poor competition, but so do we......

Is it football season yet?

I'm still pissed Grimes left us for LSU. I felt like our O-line was on the right track with him

Pour some Beer on it

I know the default opinion would be that they play poor competition, but so do we

OL run blocked ok most of the year. Instead of seeing and cutting into the hole, our backs had a bad habit of running into piles. The OL could be better, but there were a to. Of yards left out there.

Are young RBs more inclined to "just obey the rules and hit the designated hole?" Are they afraid to free lance, if they are going to be disciplined later for not doing as play was originally designed?

Probably determined by the outcome

Recruit Prosim

I wouldn't consider any of our RB's anything better than mediocre right now. I think Holston and Clease have the potential to be good backs in the future, but the lack of broken tackles that we've had this year is startling. Tmac has gone down with every arm tackle since his freshman year, Peoples can't make anyone miss, and until Clease got healthy, no one on the roster could run away from anyone. Holston in the last quarter of the season that actually put any moves on tacklers.

I think Holston has the best potential to be good, just a freshman so who knows. People were salivating over McMillan after his first year.

But I do agree, we need to get a RB in the likes of RW, KJ, DW, etc.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

You mean when Shane Beamer should have been fired for not recognizing McMillan's first round talent? \s

TMac is great at straight line playmaking ability but hasn't really developed the ability to create his own yards.

I wonder how Wheatley will do. I assume he reshirted or has he played on special teams?

Seems like a good question that no one has answered.

Always be yourself. Because the people that matter, don't mind. And the one's that mind, don't matter.

He redshirted. Funny cause he actually got credited with a tackle on special teams but it was actually Rivers. They wear the same number.

Thanks LA.
Also appreciate all of your posts. I rely totally on TKP so could care less about origin of sources, good, bad or ugly.
Love your fair city. Worked there my first 2 years out of Tech.

Always be yourself. Because the people that matter, don't mind. And the one's that mind, don't matter.

McMillian was basically the same flawed back in '15 that he is now. I never got the "salivating" over him and the calls for him to be a "feature" back. The more touches he got, the less productive he got.

Overall I agree, but you can't say Travon has gone down with every arm tackle since freshman year. The reason he is so controversial is because he has runs/games that make people question why he is not getting 20 touches a game. My biggest problem with him is his inconsistency. It seems like some games he has the attitude where he is gonna keep his legs moving and run through people and get his 100 yards. Other games, yes, he does go down with arm tackles. It's maddening to see a guy with his size and speed perform so inconsistently.

Obviously there is a lot more to an elite back than just what is mentioned above, but I think if he ran as hard as he has in some of his better games more often, he would get a lot more touches and be seen more favorably than he currently is.

Actually he has gone down in almost every open field 1-on-1 situation in his career. He consistently turned potential 4-5 yard runs into 1 yard runs.

One thing I will say is a strength of his is dragging/pushing a pile and turning a 2yd run into an 8 yd run IF he got to the LBs between the tackles.

Yea that's what I was saying. I wasn't saying he was a great back or anything and he rarely made people miss but you kind of reiterated what I was saying in that saying he went down with every arm tackle isn't very accurate. That was, as we both said, actually one of his strengths at times was being a powerful runner. If we think he goes down with every arm tackle then we won't like McClease very much. He won't ever break tackles and he won't make a ton of people miss either.

No, I don't agree about the arm tackle part. He broke (or even avoided) very few 1 on 1 tackles in space and it took very little to bring him down.

But he could move a pile when it was just a scrum of bodies and he had a little forward momentum.

TMac has come under a lot of scrutiny, but I feel bad for the guy. We know he can be a 1000 yard/5ypc back because he has literally done it while wearing the orange and maroon. That said, we can find individual plays all day where a running back doesn't make the right cut or doesn't make someone miss, but the fact of the matter is the last two years we have been absolutely awful at running the football, and that starts with the OL.

I think you can only blame so much on the OL. When guys like Clease and Holston are running the same plays and aren't stopped at the line and getting second and third efforts with chunks of yards, you have to think the OL isn't 100% responsible.

He seems to me to be one of two slow offensive skills players at the moment.

Running the football does not start with the OL.

Starts with keeping safeties out of the box.

Bud Foster taught us VT fans this years ago.

Look at our personnel this year versus last yet this year is a mess. Why? We graduated some stud WRs (relatively) who kept most teams safeties out of the box. With that said, elite teams with cover guys were'nt skared of us even last year. This year pretty much you don't even need elite cover guys, you're still bringing everyone and their brother into the box.

LSU hasn't had a passing game for years. but an elite RB and good OL can still beat the #s in the box. id even argue TMACs fresh year ford and cam were fresh and bucky had no clue how to play WR yet and this was under scotty L Tmac ran for 1k+ with really not much of a threat of a passing game. scheme and play makers can beat #s in the box. the issue this season and much of last is that when the backs get 1 on 1 match ups (scheme puts us in a place to win) we don't have the play makers to make that man miss. that is the difference between 120 rushing yards per and 180 and 2.5 ypc and 3.8-4.0. we didn't bust ANY runs this season outside of the JJ 70 yrder against WVU that I can remember. if we bust just one or two tackles a game and get a decent 20-30 yrd run that makes a huge difference statistically and that's what us fans look at as the measuring stick.

#Bapn ain't EZ

Wanna win put boobie in! Let boobie spin coach!

LSU has bigger and faster guys then almost every team they play. When they go up against an evenly matched squad their run game gets shut down (see Bama every year lately).

I'll be the first to trash our OL, which I thought was pretty lackluster this year, especially in the running game. But TM's longest run of the year was 23 yards, and it was his only run over 20. That's not all on the OL. The inability to get to the second level and make a couple guys miss for an entire season is largely on the RB, not only the OL

Are you saying Travon's transferring?

Recruit Prosim

There's a strong possibility. He's mentioned it a few times.

I don't see it being likely... unless he transfers down a level he'd have to sit out his last season of eligibility. And if you're trying to increase your profile, why go down a level?

unless he transfers down a level he'd have to sit out his last season of eligibility

Not if he graduates from Tech first, then he'd be eligible immediately

I think you'll be surprised sooner than later, then.

To his credit, Bronco probably appreciates that delegating recruiting is for the betterment of the program.

Yeah, I'm guessing he adds more by winning against Navy than in-person recruiting.

In other words, doesn't matter.

Who is left?

Culver, McFadden and Walker
Dax
Henry
Webb
Grant
Mitchell
Hill (DT from Ole Miss)

And I guess if Graham is visiting GT, we are basically still recruiting him.

Is that it?

Baptiste DE from NJ

Javontae Jean-Baptiste, 6'5" 215 lb OLB/DE from NY (goes to school at Bergen Catholic in NJ).

P5 offers: BC, Rutgers, SU, Tenn, VT, Baylor, Nebraska, Pitt, Purdue. Neb/UT/Pitt/VT offered during senior season (late bloomer)

Visiting BC this weekend, VT next weekend. Good looking tape, very similar to Dadi Nicholas. If we don't get him, BC likely will. I would rather not have to play him every year.

Anyone with inside info feel free to chime in but:

How does all the coaching turmoil bode for us? Is the staff going to be more aggressive now that other coaches are establishing their grounds? Does all the noise help our cause with some top recruits?

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I like Grant, but he reminds me a lot of a Holston/Peoples hybrid...more of a power downhill runner. I wonder if it would be better to go after a runner with more vision/wiggle (specifically I'm thinking of Elijah Davis; he's not highly rated, but his tape looks impressive to me and would seem to compliment the RBs we already have).

would love to see Elijah, he has JMU and ODU, but coaches spoke with him recently, so says 247 and his twitter

he's also the 2nd leading rusher in the country:

also, a very good kid:

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

Would be happy to take him as a PWO. We don't need more RBs on roster of his caliber.

Davis ran all over my kid's school earlier in the playoffs.
13 rushes 193 Total Rushing Yards 7 Total TDs

Grant doesn't look too downhill to me. 5'11", 200 lbs, good breakaway speed. And he's not going to overlap with Steven Peoples much anyway....Peoples only has one year left. Grant looks sound in all phases on his tape.

He also looks severely underranked, currently 51st ranked in his state, 3*. His offer list is impressive:
UT, VT, Ark, UF, UGA*, GT, UK, KU, Lville, MichSt, Mizzou, NCSU, UNC, Miss, OreSt, Purdue, Rut, SU, Wake, WVU.

20 P5 offers would have him behind only Tre Turner of our current committed players.

*I'm currently of the opinion that if UGA offers a RB, we should recruit that RB. They seem to be masterful at RB evaluation. UGA offered Grant in August, so it wasn't an early token offer.

Does it take masterful evaluation for UGA to have a stack of 5 star RBs? Like no one else knew they were gems

Sure, counter point: they don't need Grant and offered him. In August, after he had committed to UT.

Sad part is Shane is down there with ye olde boxing glove. Maybe it's magic?

Guys, Javontae Jean-Baptiste jumped from a low 3-star to a 89% 4-star, now ranked above Rasheed Walker at 120 on the top247
I think it's time we started paying attention to him

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

Yeah I definitely think with that update he will be a priority target along with Dax, Webb, Mitchell, the Walkers, and Grant. Look like a rangy OLB, DE that plays at the highest level of NJ football.
Also, James Graham got bumped to a 4*, which gives us 4 four stars with 1 5* (KJ), 4 four stars (Rasheed, Dax, Webb, Baptiste) and 3 high 3* (Grant, Culver, and Mitchell) still left on the board. If their is one thing I have seen consistently by our recruiting staff and coaches, its the ability to evaluate talent earlier and better than many of the big time schools.

Are we worried about Graham visiting GT with PJ's promise to play him at 3-Option QB?

I'd be- that dude is a stud and would be scary running that O

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

Damn he just blew up like Farley at the end of last cycle.

247 had this to say about his jump...

Finally, Jean-Baptiste wowed us with his senior production. He checks in at No. 120 after piling up 88 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks as a senior at one of the top programs in New Jersey. His film checked out in a big way and programs like Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Nebraska are among the programs that have delivered recent offers.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Nebraska offered under the former regime. Tennessee offered when they still had a regime. I'm not sure either of those programs are in a position to pursue him currently.

By default, it looks to be between VT and BC. Visiting BC this weekend, VT next weekend. If he's a December signee, we get the last visit.

Sorry, I misread that he was offered last month.

Anyway, good luck visiting Nebraska in January.

Who do you mean by "we"?

You do realize that coaches could't care less that he got bumped up by ranking services? They make their own evaluations and it's not as though he suddenly got better overnight; the recruiting services are just catching up and the VT coaches have likely already formed their professional, accountable opinion - which may or may not be in sync with the recruiting services.

We aren't the coaches. We are the fans. And we are going to get more excited for higher ranked recruits. Simple as that.

Yeah. Simple as that...except for the fans who get upset when VT coaches doesn't pursue some 4* and the peanut gallery actually thinks that the coaches are the ones who don't know what they're doing.

3 VT commits got bumped to 4*s on 247

Does anyone else think it's interesting that we are still offering/pursuing RBs?

I want to say this respectfully because I know sometimes recruits read this site, but I wonder what Steward and Beck think when they see this. Steward's tape is one of the most mediocre highlight tapes I've seen from a RB. I really can't see him making a big splash in our RB rotation. Again, I don't mean to disrespect him, I would love for him to prove me wrong, but I wish we had waited on his offer a little longer than we did (I know it's easier to say that now, while at the time we didn't have any committed RBs). In my mind Beck is a little different story. He has elite speed, and I don't think many are expecting him to come in and be our feature back. My hopes for him are that the staff can find a role for his speed, and hopefully he could be a dangerous return man on kick-offs.

Thank you for saving the thread.

Is it football season yet?

interesting that he's not listed as having an offer from Clemson but went there on an official visit recently

Can anybody in-the-know fill us in on how many of our commits will be expected to sign on the early signing day? Is this something the majority will be doing or a select few? Any guesses and approximations welcome. Sorry if I missed this somewhere else.

It's new to everyone, from my #sauces it can be a pretty heavy signing period with a few other guys we are waiting on being pushed to sign as well.

From what I've been told, we will be able to rest with ease knowing guys are locked in and really go after the 5 guys we have a strong shot at.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Do you think with the early signing period that coaches, specifically VT, will be extra selective which recruits receive grant-in-aid paperwork?

That's over my pay grade. I do think with LaLa wanting to sign in December some of the guys we are waiting on better make some noise (Grant) before we lose that kid. He has a PWO but also a full ride to ODU.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Any word on the 2018 RB we offered today? I saw he's an FSU de-commit. Do we have any kind of relationship with him or are we just seeing if we have a shot?

According to his profile, oregon was number two before he committed. Now with FSU getting Oregon's coach, I doubt he goes anywhere.

Then I realized that we might stand even less of a chance with him because he was HS teammates with Pimpleton and we no longer have that connection. And maybe even more worrisome, this may open up a spot for PSU to take Walker, who is visiting PSU this weekend...I feel conflicted.

Hokie fan | W&M grad

PSU can't take him for the same reasons why we won't take him

Keep calm, Gobble on

They are both gone. We need to focus on closing with Culver and it will be one of our best OL classes in years.

I don't normally chime in on uncommitted recruits, but I would prefer Culver over Walker. Walker is an athletic kid, but he is a pure project. Sometimes those projects work out (Nijman), other times they end up as Nic Acree (in terms of football productivity.) If we lose him and get other top targets at other spots, I will sleep easy.

Get Culver. Hold onto McFadden. Throw in Darrisaw and Harris and I like that haul. I think left tackle is the position where the most talented depth is on OL. Other spots were much more worrisome.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Culver, McFadden, Darrisaw, Harris ... maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I'd call that our best OL recruiting class since 2013 (Teller, McLaughlin, Osterloh, and Pfaff).

Probably why we locked into playing ODU for the rest of eternity. It would be interesting to see how VT recruited if it switched geographic locations with W&M.

Recruit Prosim

Playing ODU is nearly 100% about saving money. Contrary to conventional message board wisdom it has almost nothing to do with recruiting.

If Hokie Club donations were 2x or 3x what they are, there might not be a long-term deal with ODU.

How is it about saving money when we pay them to play us?

Recruit Prosim

do we pay them to play us? It was my understanding that we don't pay if it's a home and home.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I could be mistaken, and I don't have a source, but I thought that we did

Recruit Prosim

VT isn't paying ODU to play VT. Each team pays the visiting team $250k to cover expenses during the series. So VT actually makes a little money on the deal w/ one more home game.

When the going rate for a one-off FBS home game is as much as a $1 million plus in 2018 and climbing, imagine the cost (and difficulty) of scheduling 13 other one-offs through the life of the contract which ends, I believe, in 2032 or something. You might be talking $30 million or more to pay for 13 home games between now and 2032.

Of course you need to subtract the net revenues that will be lost by having 7 additional home games instead of away games at ODU. But in the end, VT is saving a ton of money - and headaches because it's getting harder and harder to schedule home non-P5 FBS opponents.

Much as I hate the notion of the series with ODU, that's what this series has always been about - under Weaver and Babcock. VT's relatively modest athletic budget and saving money. It has virtually nothing to do with recruiting.

Message board posters tend to think like fans (duh) and forget that there is a lot of money being earned and spent - and that is what is behind many AD decisions.

It's all of the above not one or the other. It's a D1 game that should be an easy win most years without having to pay them in a recruiting hotbed where we have fans and even a few alumni.

I guess Fu's new directive forced him to go ahead and make the decision. I'm glad the waiting's over at least.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Womp womp...that's disappointing. I can't be too mad but I was hoping he drank enough of the Hokie kool-aid.

I've heard of the Bama Bump. What's it called if Clemson gets it?

Loren Johnson won another state title with Highland Springs, as did Appomattox and Westfield, I believe Salem winning would be 4 teams with 3 straight titles in one day.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

App has some ballers, all committed to Liberty

That is indeed correct, 4 teams winning their third straight. Hopewell and Riverheads are the other 2 winners tonight.

Man I hope Fuente can tap back into that Highland Springs pipeline. I don't think we've gotten a Springer since Jerome Wright. Notable Springers since then:
Felton Davis III - Starting WR at Mich St
K'Von Wallace - Starting safety at Clemson
Greg Dortch - Starting WR for Wake Forest
Mekhi Becton - Starting OT for Louisville

Some kids just want to go out of state. LJ is a proud Hokie, so it's certainly not a head coach in the kids' ears. When you look at that list, we went through a coaching change. There was a lot of unknown for a 17/18/19 yr old to decide. Would love to see more RVA players in general. Highly underrated region in Virginia.

VT hasn't recruited Richmond very well in YEARS. Sure you could point to some good talent we've landed (Macho, Ekanem, Rogers) but we've swung and missed with all the big time recruits in the last 5-6 years. I remember when a lot of people on TKP thought Shane Beamer was going to be a lockdown recruiter for VT, underwhelmed in both coaching RBs & recruiting RVA.
Fuente has been trying to repair the recruiting relationship with Virginia HS coaches, I know he did some coaching clinics last summer in the 757. VT needs to focus on Richmond recruiting with schools like; Benedictine, St. Chris, Hermitage, Highland Springs, Varina, and the West end schools. I don't even have to mention how important the 757 is to VT. But I agree, some kids just want to leave the state no matter what.

Are there any JUCO's (outside of Webb) or potential grad transfers that we are looking at?
