I spoke with his Dad on Tuesday. He is letting James have his moment and make the decision on his own. Didn't give much detail about the reveal either.

Isn't his sister a UGa student or alum? Is the giddy nature of that tweet reason for concern?

I believe she will be graduating in May. From what I have heard, it is not a concern. If she was a freshman or sophomore, there could be more of a draw to remain closer. Truly think it will between us and Duke.

Nebraska yeah Frost is absolutely playing games and it's either going to work out well or he's going to look like a fool this signing class. Family Friend said their son got an offer a week ago or so from Nebraska and now its apparently uncomittable and he's being told they'll get back to him next week.

Looking at Nebraska's recent offers seems like Frost is offering every 3* mid 4* and seeing what sticks.

What does an uncommitable offer look like?

"Congrats, on the great senior season! We want you to potentially be a part of our program"

"That's awesome!! I'm all in"

"Why don't you take some time to think about it"

"I'm ready now"

"We're not"

pretty much nailed it.

College Coaches are absolute gems at the way they word things.

We'd love for you to be a apart of our program and view you as a player than can take us to the next level and win some conference titles. I'd like to offer you a spot and lets see if we can't get this thing going.

Most kids will read that and go I got a spot, but nowhere is there anything about a scholarship... they go to commit and coaches will usually say ohh that was an offer to be a preferred walk on and then we can see how it works out.

Awesome Skutt, Glad to hear we landed Grant, Mitchell, Culver, Walker, Webb, KJ, Baptiste, Dax, and Webb all in the same day!

Massive, massive Official Visit this weekend for the Hokies with big position needs.
- Walker Culver

Not to mention the news of Jeremy Webb cancelling his visit to UT and James Mitchell most likely committing to the Hokies today, this is looking very promising. Its great to be fighting for top tier guys to fill our class rather than warm bodies.

Dont love the idea of official visits in the middle of December in Blacksburg.

Flippin cold.

Yeah, but some kids might prefer the snow.

I'm just saying, one of the reasons why I liked VT over NCSU is because VT got snow, and I rarely experienced it at home. That, and NCSU suuuuuuuuucks.

According to the 247 composite, VT currently has 13 commits ranked higher than LOLuva's best commit.

That's more higher ranked commits than fans at their own spring game.

Decent chance that number outpaces the win streak by the time February rolls around.

Just saw on 247 that the two VT insiders put in CBs for VT commit Braxton Clark to Nebraska. He's our lowest rated cornerback commit in a class with a lot of DBs. I think the biggest downside to losing him would be the Florida connection, he's from Dr. Phillips in Orlando.

Florida is always going to be there and we'll never have a true pipeline. Take the best guys each class

was a mutual break up and no hard feelings down at DP.. that will continue to be a mini pipeline. Kid knew it was going to be an uphill battle with the db's committed (now Webb + DJ) and on roster at VT.

I know Clemson is still in the lead, but the comment by Derion Kendrick leaves me thinking there is still hope to land KJ.

""We're trying to get K.J. Henry in the boat but I don't know what he's going to do yet. We're trying to get Justyn Ross. I know we're talking to Bookie Radley-Hiles, too. It's a great percentage that he will end up there with us." – Derion Kendrick, four-star wide receiver commit."

If he still doesn't know where KJ is gonna go, than either KJ is playing it close to his vest or he truly is still coming down to the wire making a decision.

If I remember correctly, Kenderick is also teammates with Eli Adams

Anybody with #sauces know if there's any legs to the guys saying Elliott may be a flip candidate. I know the staff is working on Grant but I think Elliott would be huge. 247 says he's an early signee to Oregon though so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm sure it's insignificant and I think he's been wearing it all year, but Dax was wearing a VT hand towel during the NC-SC shrine game. Also, Alan Tisdale blocked a punt, getting a head start on Beamerball!

Any insight on why we're taking yet another running back? This is the first time I'm confused by our coaching staff's choice on who to go after.

On one hand, I agree with you, but at the same time I think he would be the best RB of the class, so in a that sense it makes sense to me. In the end, I have to trust our staff to have enough spots to land him and any other recruits we are going after.

Also with Ford being our only RB target we are going after in the next cycle, this would be a good amount of talent between Holston, Grant and Ford. Watch for a different focus next year

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Does Steward stay if we get another RB?

Oh crap, completely forgot about him. It's gonna be a packed room.

Yea and right after it Evan CB'd another RB to UT. So to my unsauced eye I would guess that Grant flipped to the good guys during his OV which has forced UT to turn their attention to the next guy down their list.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

I don't know much about Grant... Haven't watched any film. How pumped should we be about this?

Film is pretty impressive. Also impress with Steward's film after being completely underwhelmed by his Junior year film. Not as high on Beck's film, but his speed is true.

Love this running back class to go along with the three guys we have in there now.

Always choose joy.

I just don't see Beck playing much RB. I see him as a special teams guy.

FWIW, Techsideline has him listed as running back / safety

we'll see what happens with Beck in 2019. Kid has legit speed, he will see the field if he has other football skills.

Good looking running back. For what it's worth, UT fans thought he may be even better at a Whip/Rover type position.

https://n.rivals.com/news/shrine-bowl-which-programs-will-land-top-uncom...

Don't hate me for this. I'm just the messenger. I'm not saying I'm putting any stock in it either but Rivals has this to say about their prediction for Dax...

The pick: Stanford

Why: Hollifield's recruitment has gone through a major change since the summer, when he seemed like a Virginia Tech lean. Academics have taken a much more prominent role in his recruitment and that gives the Cardinal the lead over the Hokies and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are all over Hoillifield and his family and it is definitely making the decision tougher for him, but everything that Stanford offers on and off the field will be too much for any school to overcome.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

From what I've seen I really don't think UNC has been a major player in his recruitment for a while now. 2 horse race between VT and Stanford. This report makes it seem like we are the #3 team at best. Don't think that's accurate.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

That's probably why he wore a VT hand towel and VT gloves at his game this weekend.

I remember when all 7 Rivals analysts predicted Nnadi to VT. Their predictions appear to be even less accurate than Crystal Balls.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Remember when everyone at 247 picked KJ to Clemson?

No thanks for the article thats good insight. We all know Stanford is a top end school in every right but I dont fully buy the "his recruitment has taken a turn towards academics" narrative. If he wants to be the next Luke Kuechly, which we all know he does, than he is going to be just fine coming out of the NFL with a degree from either Stanford or Tech. I thino Stanford and Tech both have alot to offer but in the end the closeness to home and playing for BudFu will keep him home.

I honestly don't know what I'd do if I were the kid. Stanford is an amazing school. It's in Cali. Virginia Tech is not as good academically, but that doesn't mean we aren't a damn good school. And if he comes here then he gets to play in front of his family and friends. Tough decision. I think the x-factor is going to be what the other recruits we're going after do and how much he wants to play for Bud Foster.

I'm curious to see who it is.

Rumors so far on this thread seem to indicate Grant.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Class calculator puts us at 247.34, which would be good for 10th in the country right now.

Thats actually kind of depressing considering thats our highly unrealistic best case scenario and others are likely to move ahead of that mark with their soon-to-be commits.

For me in Fuente's second full recruiting year anything in top 15 is a win.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I would COMPLETELY agree. But with us at 15th right now id expect us to finish in the 20-25 range. If we were 10th I'd figure we finish 15th-20th. The blue bloods (and a few others) always make huge jumps and pass us up at the end.

Honestly, does it matter? We are well on our way for a balanced class getting the kids we for the most part applied the most resources. Probably more 4*s than ever in school history.

Somebody can do the math, but the difference between a 10th ranked class and the 20th ranked class is probably one 5* kid or two 4* kids. That's not that big of a deal.

Well for one thats clearly not the case with the above hypothetical and skutt using the calculator. Two i wont rehash the debate on star rankings and class ranking and whether or not they matter (they mostly do imo) but suffice it to say i believe we will need to see new levels of recruiting to see new levels of on field results. Therefore, im hoping to work our way into the teens (this year or next) then maybe crack that top 10 once or twice to give us that realistic shot at a national championship.

Sign the players you identify that fit your needs. When you do that, you are filling holes, finding players who fit your system and maximize your resources.

We are hitting on a high number of kids we have been working the hardest. If that's a 20th ranked class, great. There is no
Magic recruiting ranking that gives you a ticket to the dance. Clemson has had a lot of classes between 11th and 26th. I think they have been 9th once under Dabo. The difference between 11 and 21 is like one kid. It doesn't matter over an 85 man roster.

I think you need to go look at 247s rankings and numbers if you believe the difference between the 11th ranked class and the 20th is one kid. Again, if you look at the example in this sub thread you are responding to you will see multiple 4 and 5 star kids would shift our current ranking from 15th to 10th (assuming skutts 247 calculator ranking are correct). Which is 5 spaces and doesnt account for all of the other teams improvements which would almost assuradely drop us at least a few spaces. Also clemson has had several years of rankings in the teens under dabo which has built a depth of talent. You are correct in that they havent been in the top 10 consistantly (still twice since 2011 which is something we have never done) but teens, yes they have. And with most teams that have gone on to win the natty there really has been a magical number with regards to recruiting rankings. Dont misunderstand, im excited about this class and the trajectory of our recruiting.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

I agree, we aren't likely to ever recruit substantially better than we are now. Geography and donor base will hold us back.

We better coach them up and find kids who really fit our system and culture.

We're currently tied with last years number of 4 stars (5). 2012 had the most ever that i found (6) when we ended with the 21st ranked class. So we need 2 more to set that record you mentioned which is kind of exciting as that seems relatively attainable. That would also possibly be our highest ranked class ever which would obviously be huge! Here's hoping!!

Which ranking organization/method are you looking at for stars? Because we have 5 based on 24/7's composite which is what I thought most people went by

Recruit Prosim

We're currently tied with last years number of 4 stars (5). 2012 had the most ever that i found (6)

See the number in parentheses. We are in agreement. We currently have five recruits committed in possession of four stars. Maybe thats less confusing?

Any comment made on this site that isn't overtly positive from the start seems to rub people the wrong way with the latter portions even getting ignored. Or perhaps im not communicating as clearly as i think i am. My original point (and this isnt directed at you specifically tbjhokie but all of the responders to my first above post) is simply that if we got every single 4 and 5 star prospect that we have any kind of sway with (which is a stretch i think we can all agree) it would land us with a recruiting class of probably high teens to low 20s after all the other teams acquire the rest of their commits. I would be extremely pleased to make it to the teens, and even 20th would be a nice step up. I just didnt realize that this was our ceiling even if the highly unlikey were to happen. However if we add one to two more guys, which seems closer to realistic, from where we are now (ranked 15th) i think we actually end up in the 20 to 25th range when its all said and done. So a slight step up from last year and our average of the last ten years, plus or minus a few spots.

Sorry. I went to the Virginia Tech School of Kids Who Can't Read Good and Want to Learn How To Do Chemical Engineering Good Too.

Recruit Prosim

I lacked the intelligence to attend the do chemical engineering part. I was more the learn to sell world book encyclopedias type.

But you can read good?

Recruit Prosim

it really depends on what Recruiting service you use. Most ppl on TKP seem to take 247 as the end all be all but Ive always been more of a RIVALS guy. We've had multiple recruiting years with more stars than we have this year, doesn't mean they all pan out like Tyrod/Kendall Fuller. VT has had so many 4* kids they never lived up to their Ranking.

Pour some Beer on it

Good point. I do tend to lean 247 composite for the law of averages but thats certainly another factor.

So I just played around with the 247 class calculator and here's what I found:

If we add Dax and Grant to our current class (and take out Braxton Clark, just based on CB movement to Nebraska), our class would have a score of about 227, which going by last year's final class rankings would put us at about the 21st ranked class.

If we add Dax, Grant, and Jean-Baptiste, that would give us a score of about 230, good for 18th or 19th based on last year's final class rankings.

If we were to land Dax, Grant, and KJ that would give us a score of about 239, good for about the 16th ranked class (and just ahead of Clemson's score last year, though they only signed 14 kids).

If we go full Kool-Aid and add Dax, Grant, KJ, Rasheed Walker, and Jean-Baptiste we would have a score of around 248 which would put us around 12th or 13th in last year's final class rankings.

Thanks for this, these numbers are actually a little better than i would have guessed. Of course this years scores and rankings could work out differently. Im not sure most people understand the our current ranking likely does not equal our final signing day ranking.

Beyond the fact the recruiting services put it front and center, I don't understand why people get excited about the "ranking".

The better real time barometer of the level of incoming talent is the avg rating, not the team ranking.

VT is currently 24th in avg rating at 87.11 (1/100th better than Vandy). That's seems a much better measure to me. If VT closes very stong (Culver made almost difference, fwiw), it can maybe move up a few spots.

But before getting all excited about maybe moving up a few more spots, note that each ranking spot in avg ratings is not equal. 18 of the teams above VT have a significantly higher avg rating (2 pts or more), but the next 22 or so teams are within a point of VT. So the avg rating gap,( i.e. incoming talent gap) between #18 & #24 is twice as large as the gap between #24 and #40 (and about the same as between #24 and #45).

So moving up to #18 would be a big deal. Moving up to #21? Not so much of a big deal.

Yeah, class rankings are weird because they often also weight the quantity of recruits. obviously getting people in through the door is a big deal, but if you have a solid team with a lot of scholly players that aren't gonna jump to the NFL early etc, you can afford not to have to play the "numbers always work out" game with forced attrition.

I agree that the avg. rating is a better barometer overall, but still doesn't account for the "big school bump". Recruits who commit or are offered by top 10 recruiting teams (OSU, Alabama, USC, Notre Dame) almost always get a rankings bump when they get offered by those schools. Usually because the recruiting sites will take notice and look at their tape more (ex. Walker Culver), but there are examples on each top 10 recruiting class every year of a recruits that started off in the low 3 star range to shoot up to a 4 star after they commit to said "big school". Tech gets a little bit of that bump but nowhere near the like of the blue blood schools.

Agreed, but getting offered doesn't impact team rankings or avg star ratings. If a kid gets bumped because of their offer list, I'll all for it because I trust the real pros who are held accountable for their evaluations over recruiting services.

Also, don't think kids haven't gotten bumps due to VT offers. How many solid "3 stars" do think VT has signed over the years who were solid 3 stars in part or largely because they were offered by and/or committed to VT?

I agree that average rating is the better metric. But is also has it's flaws. Like the fact that we are being weighed down by the #1 rated Long Snapper in the country who's rated as an 81. Kid is great at what he does but he isn't going to be ranked highly. IMO specialty players (P, K, LS) just shouldn't be rated by recruiting services. Give them a ranking at their position and leave it at that.

Agreed. I specifically chose "better".

And no measure can take into account how players fit certain systems, whether you're taking the Al Groh path of signing high ranked recruits regardless of whether they all play the same position, it's not a position of need, etc.

It's such an imprecise process. I follow it, but I'll never understand the chest-thumping and hand-wringing over statistically insignificant differences in team rankings and individual ratings. I guess it just a societal thing now where we've been programed to rank everything - without any regard for the subjectivity, context, or deviation in those rankings.

Totally agree. I've always tried to look more closely at the individual recruits and how they fill the needs of the team. With that in mind, I think this class and last years class have been very very solid regardless of what the recruiting rankings say. Though I understand that there is something to be gained to be able to say we signed a top-10 or whatever recruiting class. Definitely helps with perception.

Top 10 is depressing??? That's higher than we had any reasonable way to expect. If we end top 20 i'll be happy, even just 15 should leave us ecstatic.

Siiigh, please read all of my other points that follow. No, obviously ENDING with a top 10 class would not be depressing. I would be willing to sell body parts for this accomplishment but....go read what i already said for further clarification.

I read all that too, i think we're on the same page. I just think that even as an almost impossible ceiling, top 10 should be pretty exciting, not depressing.

I see. Again though if we hit 10 now we would not finish 10th. So 10th isnt actually our ceiling (maybe 15th to 20th?) is what i was trying to say hence "kind of" depressing. Trust me 15th to 20th would still make me extremely happy if thats where we end up, but we would likely only accomplish that IF we landed all of those guys. Obviously its fine if we disagree on the hypothetical numbers but does that make sense?

The numbers never make sense, but they always work out. 10th it is!

Yeah for sure, I think I kind of knee jerked when i saw the depressed comment because while I think we're a long ways from elite there is a ton to be excited about. What you're saying hits home for me too.

Any year where our recruiting ranking is higher than our final ranking in the AP poll is fine by me

Close enough! I'll take it.

Thats it! One coaches tweet for each kid! By jove you solved it!!!

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!

confirmation would be great.

2 Crystal Balls in for Walker Culver to VT. 1 from an Ohio State Insider. Came right around 830, which fits well in the timeline for letting OSU coaches know, and VT coaches soon after leading to the Signals.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

It's Culver! Just committed on Twitter.

I got some beers. Let's drink 'em!

So do we believe that Foster actually got this meme himself, or is he getting help. Gotta remember this dude was not a twitter fan and just seems odd he would post this way.

I bet Coach Wiles taught him. Wiles seems to be pretty good in the Twitterverse.

It's Culver

Beating out Ohio State and Auburn for this kid is huge.

If we land every target we are still going after will we have room for them all?

Yes... because.... the numbers always work, atleast thats what I heard.

If the numbers aren't working out, someone gets worked out so that the numbers work out.

The numbers

Always

Work out

Well done. All around. Very well done.

247 indicates in their article that Culver is expected to sign in the Early Period. Would be huge to lock him up officially.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

Who is Shibest recruiting?

Dax

It is culver.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

Wild weekend. Can someone compile a list of current verbals (with basic measurables and positions) ahead of early signing so we can check them off the list as they sign?

The numbers will work out. Wait till after the bowl game and let the smoke settle. Changes are coming,

Culver was never gonna leave unless he committed.

LAHOKIE and I both warned of a good weekend. Better hold on to your pants for the rest of this week. Not sure how it plays out buts it's gonna be fun.

You mean more good news?!!??!!???!!

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

You're the bestest

Approximations are tellling me we have 2 spots left, barring any further attrition. I believe Grant and Dax will be the full court press with Baptiste in the mix if we miss one of those or someone drops out

Expect both a drop out and attrition....just saying

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Not surprising. I've got a few thoughts on each

Welp, 1 of my thoughts has been confirmed. Not sure if its public yet.

Graham?

I think he's talking about attrition.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."

Braxton Clark is much more likely to de-commit than Graham..

It seems like we're all in for Devyn Ford next year (for good reason), but are we recruiting Quavaris Crouch at all? Are we in the discussion?

Recruit Prosim

Elijah Davis still without an offer, but apparently he's been in close contact with staff, maybe backup if we don't get Grant??? I fully expect him going to Liberty, at this point.

I don't know enough about scouting to make a judgement but I've seen a lot of folks say they'd be concerned with our staff if we offered him.

We are done on the OL.
My guess is this is to keep the hype train rolling more than a new commit

Recruit Prosim

He doesn't believe Walker has committed.

Possibly Jaevon Becton?

I got some beers. Let's drink 'em!

Would that mean no KJ or JB

Recruit Prosim

Neither of them would be turned away.
KJ is announcing on Wednesday. I wouldn't surprise me if he's informed coaches already.

This is what I was wondering. If the staff knew already or if they are waiting.

I've never been so into recruiting as I have this season. I'm stoked, energized, and ready to run through a wall. Can we close out strong?

My advice is to not get your hopes up too high. Be cautiously optimistic.

I agree, but I really, REALLY like this early signing day concept.

Agree, I think we are going to get a bump from this format. Some coaches get it... Some don't. CBM over in Hooville has sent his minions out during this period (recruiting). Thinks preparing his kids for an epic ass whoopin in Annapolis is more important.

My feelings were reinforced when I heard PAWWWLLLL come out against it. He is convinced that the ESP hurts college football (ALABAMA) and that it should be rescinded now.

I never met a project that couldn't justify a new tool.

People don't like to be positive, but the staff do close strong last year with all the commits daily right up until NSD

We will not close out strong. The ones we expect will not come here and those we are hoping for won't come here.

There you go.... set yourself up for disappointment so you won't be surprised.

All kidding aside, I hoping for a strong finish as well.
