December College Basketball Discussion Thread

This thread is for all non-VT related college basketball news and notes. Feel free to discuss games, players, rankings, conspiracy theories, and anything else in the wonderful world of NCAA basketball. I will try to post a new forum topic each month and a new one if the discussion gets too crowded.

NC State dealing with injuries to two forwards expected to contribute heavily this season. Darius Hicks is out for the year with an ACL tear and Abdul-Malik Abu is on a game by game schedule. Abu averaged 12 points a game last year and Hicks was expected to take over most of the role that Maverick Rowan played for them last season as a bit of a do everything guy.

As it is, they are being led in scoring by a graduate transfer, Allerik Freeman, who played three seasons at Baylor before NC State.

Syracuse is down to 8 scholarship players for the rest of the season. Not a good place to be when you aren't even out of your OOC schedule.

Syracuse played most of last season on a 6 or 7 man rotation too didn't they?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Kansas only has like 8 or 9 and one of their guys is being kept out because of possible NCAA infractions

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

7 - with the 8th the guy being held out. They had a 6'5" walk-on guarding a 7'2" player from Syracuse when their two bigs were sitting due to foul trouble (and were +13 when he was in). They have 9 total guys that can play in games at the moment, though they get a guy at the end of the semester who transferred in last year. They're hoping one of their '18 signees can graduate early to join for conference play, they're trying out a TE from the football team, and then there's the guy they're holding out, which may be resolved soon.

So they may be jumping from 7 scholarship players and 2 walk-ons to 10 scholarship players and 3 walk-ons after Christmas.

Peter - How is the rest of the ACC been looking? Who is up? Down?

Guess on how VT will fare?

Still too early to differentiate most of the top of the conference. Pitt amd Wake Forest are struggling with a lot of young guys. Louisville and Georgia Tech seem to be struggling a bit with the drama going on with those two programs. Boston College seems to maybe be turning a corner out of the cellar just in time to possibly save their coach as he is rumored to be on a pretty hot seat. Everyone else is one loss or fewer with no major glaring issues so far. Duke with Bagley and a rejuvenated Grayson Allen seem to be the measuring stick this season. As for where we will finish I suspect with some of our defensive weaknesses we are likely to be somewhere from 5th to 7th. I would expect Duke, UNC, Miami, and Florida State at least to finish above us. Florida State was about done making a statement this evening. Last I checked they had Florida on the ropes with a 12 point lead with a few minutes left. We will be battling UVA, Notre Dame and Syracuse for the next four spots I suspect.

Shocked that FSU beat up Florida, in Gainesville no less. And it wasn't ever really in doubt - FSU pretty much controlled the entire game.

Duke looks really good so far this season. They are going to be a difficult matchup for most teams in the ACC.

Is it football season yet?

They are going to be a difficult matchup for most teams in the ACC NCAA.

Agreed, Duke has looked good so far and they'll get better as the season goes along since they're playing so many freshmen.

However, they aren't a great 3-pt shooting team outside of Grayson Allen. They make up for it by playing big, and they're leading the ACC in rebounding.

When the Hokies play Duke, we're going to have to make lots of threes. We're still likely to get destroyed on the boards, but the more shots that fall the better. If we can set our defense and can force them to play in the half-court more often than not we'll have a better chance. I fear that Bagley is going to slice us up though, since KJ is the only guy with the height to even possibly slow him down. That dude skipped his senior year of high school and still will probably be the #1 pick in the NBA draft.

Shaka returns to the Siegel Center tonight at 7PM on the Deuce. That place is gonna be lit, fam

That should be a fun one.

There's some other games of note on tonight that should be pretty good - Villanova/Gonzaga, UVA/WVU, Texas A&M/Arizona and SMU/TCU.

Mo Bamba just dunked so hard a couple bricks fell off my chimney

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

That kid looked like Giannis at times last night. He's still got some weight to pack on but he's gonna be a special NBA prospect.

Looks like loluva is going to lose the "can they both please lose" game against WVU

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Who thought it was ok to let UVA schedule Wisconsin and WVU in the same year?

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

Notre Dame drops a home game against Ball State. UVA loses to WVU.

Not a great night for the ACC.

Losing to WVU on the road is defensible.

Losing to Ball State at home is just bad.

What the fuck is Bill Walton even talking about?

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

What is Bill Walton ever talking about?

You can literally say that any time he ever talks.

South Dakota State giving Wichita State a game! The Shockers are down with about 10 minutes left.

The Jackrabbits have already beaten Iowa and Ole Miss this season.

This would be a welcome, albeit many steps to figure out, boost to the Hokies resume.

Boston College turn around took a big hit this week. They lose 6'8 forward Deontae Hawkins for the rest of the year which ends his career. He was a graduate transfer from Illinois State that was so far really productive for the Eagles. He had been putting up 12.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Never easy to replace essentially a double-double machine.

Washington up 2 on #2 Kansas going into halftime. Obviously would be a nice, indirect resume booster if they got the W

Washington is up by 10 with 5 mins left!

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

And there it is:

Final score 74-65, Washington beats Kansas.

Wow. I knew Kansas had depth issues but that outcome was completely unexpected. Hopefully Washington can take that momentum into their matchup against Gonzaga.

Florida gets beat by Loyola-Chicago. Yikes.

Averaged almost 100 points per game earlier this season and could only put up 59 tonight.

They went completely cold tonight. 2/19 from 3-point range. Crazy thing is they had 18 offensive rebounds.

All that said, it's been clear watching them play this year that their shooters are extremely streaky. We all know Hudson can go hot and cold, but Koulechov has already shone he's prone to off nights (against Gonzaga). Guys like Allen and Chiozza were bad tonight too.

To me it looks like the three best teams in the country are Duke, Villanova and Michigan State. Might be Izzo's best shot at another national title.

GT lost to Wofford on a buzzer beater. Not great Bob.

VB born, class of '14

GT has been struggling all year since the allegations against their head coach and a couple players accepting impermissible benefits came out from the disgruntled booster. Two players, one senior Tadric Jackson got hit with a six game suspension last month. This loss looks tame to losing to Grambling on an own basket last week. One of the Tech bigs tipped a rebound back in at the end of the game to lose it for them.

Well, sometimes it's hard to be sneaky when throwing the game...

Good teams lose games they shouldn't folks. SLU a blip. Won't hurt us.

Always choose joy.

Johnny Hamilton is averaging 14.5 ppg and 8.6 rpg for Texas-Arlington this season. Was always a project, but has turned into a solid low-major player.

Always choose joy.

The Sun Belt isn't exactly the ACC

Boston College is going basket to basket with Duke through 10 minutes

Duke has been down almost every game this year until the pull away at the end.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

BC torching Duke from outside, up 48-41 at the half

No comeback today. BC pulling the upset to start conference play off with a BANG

I didn't expect that. But they are beatable! Villanova will be the new number one if they don't lose tomorrow.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

Up 7 at half. Just goes to show how tough the ACC can be. Have to come out willing to fight during every game, there are no gimme's even at the bottom of the conference.

This game has been incredible, the ACC aid going to be rough top to bottom this year again

Wow, I guess BC is a real team this year.

...and that win was without their third leading scorer who is now out for the season after an injury last week.

LOL Duke

Who finishes with a better ACC record, Wake or Wofford?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Suddenly that loss to Saint Louis don't look so bad

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Well at least UNC's team passed most of their classes this semester. Wofford will get after ya.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Wofford's players are pretty short across the board, but I thought you couldn't beat the best ACC teams without a full starting lineup of 7 footers
