Other VT sports - 2017!

Happy New Year Hokies! Fresh off of victories by football to get to 10 wins, men's bball (12-1!), and women's bball (13-0!), VT moves into 2017 with momentum in many sports. Wrestling is also highly ranked with another extremely successful season on the horizon.

Here's to continued success in Hokie athletics!

But...but....Mike's is closed. :(

"It's a miracle in Blacksburg, TYROD DID IT MIKEY, TYROD DID IT!"

Has anything taken up the old Mike's space yet?

I'm not sure, I haven't been in downtown Blacksburg since before Mike's closed. Partially because I didn't have a reason to and partially because of the overwhelming feeling of grief I would feel from my favorite burger joint being no more...who's cutting the dang onions?!

"It's a miracle in Blacksburg, TYROD DID IT MIKEY, TYROD DID IT!"

I went by last weekend when I was in town for the Duke game. Nothing new is there yet, but I admittedly didn't look close enough to see if there were signs on the door for anything coming.

Wait I thought we only had a football team? My UVA relatives are getting really nervous about us in basketball.

With men's basketball now ranked, David Teel wrote a neat article about the reality of schools having football and both basketball teams ranked simultaneously.

Watch the brief little interview with Whit at the top of that article.

You know what struck me most about it? Whit looks genuinely happy. I think that, in and of itself, says a lot

I vote Olivier Giroud as honorary Hokie for the duration of this comment just so I can talk about that goal again.

brilliant goal, even though he admitted it was lucky. still, goal of the season.

I don't think a scorpion kick goal can happen without some measure of luck, so not surprising he admitted as much.

It's even better that it happened 10 minutes after he missed a sitter and had the scorn of the Arsenal faithful directed squarely at him.

not a goal, but this is the greatest scorpion kick ever

Lady Hokies moved up one spot to #18 in this week's AP poll.

Lady Hokies just finished off UNC 76-68. Hokies now 14-0. Three Hokies with Double-doubles, Cook, Magarity and Hicks. Magarity put up 24 points. Hicks with 10 assists. She also has now moved up to second all time in steals in just her second season. She is averaging FIVE steals per game so far this year.

I look forward to the day when we will debate who the best hire of the Babcock era was - Buzz, Fuente, or Brooks.

It'll be hard to decide after they all win half a dozen national championships.

Babcock, if he counts.

Whit hired himself?

If you are looking for a way to spend your Sunday supporting the Hokies than you have two WatchESPN options starting at 2pm with the #18 Lady Hokies on the road at Clemson and then at 630pm #6 Wrestling begins ACC play at UNC after a pretty successful weekend.

Wrestling defeated Princeton 30-11 on Friday and then sent 14 wrestlers to F&M Open on Saturday where three Hokies brought home their respective weight classes while two others finished in third place.

They look really well coached, playing to their talents. Fun team to watch. Highly recommend catching a replay on ESPN 3, etc.
Refreshing to see as the Wolf teams were just brutal to watch at times.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I'm certainly not very knowledgeable about bball, but I get the impression Brooks is really good about scheming to fit the players where Wolf tried to get the players to fit the scheme. I would not at all be disappointed if the ladies bring home our first Natty.

There's "oh yay. We're 15-0 and have a legit shot to post an undefeated regular season" good and then there's "we can hang within 20 of UConn." I'm ecstatic to be the former but have no delusions of being the latter

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Yeah, I'm certainly not thinking it's a real possibility.

Wrestling is much more likely to get there. For that matter, so is football, and probably a few other sports.

In WBB, there are so few teams that dominate the talent pool that you could be ranked top 10 with a decent shot at a Final Four appearance but not even a glimmer of a hope at a national title.

Yes Dresser has them pointing that way. This year i am worried about 133 and 157. We are thin there Latona @ 133 (Freshman) is the only one on the roster at this time. I'm sure they have a couple that could cut.

Really wanted to watch the NC match to really so how everyone is doing. Of course ACC Access then connection problems. The usual.

BTW, in short with the incoming recruits the future is bright!

Coach Brooks is doing a little of both, to be honest. For those interested, I'd recommend listening to the interview he did on the Dishin & Swishin podcast, which can be found here:

https://dishnswish.libsyn.com/dishin-swishin-122216-podcast-kenny-brooks-and-virginia-tech-crack-the-top-25

Quick highlights - He's molded the team's offense into one much like how his JMU teams played. Coach Brooks is also pretty candid about how he's adjusted his disciplined defensive scheme to allow Chanette Hicks to do her thing, which is roam and jump passing lanes because she's such a unique player.

Regardless, he's been a home run hire.

Speaking of such. What do we have in NCs? The only one I can think of is some guy (could not pronounce his name) that won an individual NC in the weight throw. That was years ago. What else?

Click for President

We have several individual NC's in the throwing heavy stuff events in indoor and outdoor track (about 10-12 if memory serves me). Other than that we have a couple oddball unofficial natties in bass fishing and ping pong.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Track and Field:
Spyridon Jullien won the Weight throw in 2005 and 2006 in Indoor Track. He won the Hammer Throw in 2005 and 2006 in Outdoor Track.

Marcel Lomnicky won the Hammer throw in 2009 in Outdoor Track. He won the weight throw in 2012 in Indoor Track.

Queen Harrison won the 60M Hurdles in 2010 in Indoor Track and the 400M and 100M hurdles in 2010 in Outdoor Track.

Alexander Ziegler won the Hammer Throw in 2011 and 2012 in outdoor track. He also won the Weight throw in 2013 in Indoor Track.

Dorotea Habazin won the Hammer Throw in 2011 in outdoor track.

Tomas Kruzliak won the Hammer Throw in 2013 in outdoor track.

Irena Sediva won the Javelin Throw in 2015 in Outdoor Track.

That gives us the Men's Hammer Throw National Title in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013. That's six of the last eleven.

Didn't we have a wrestler win one a few years ago too?

He placed 2nd. Devin Carter

According to the link provided below by Fencer (Link copied for simplicity), we have 1 individual wrestling championship. I'll try to remember to look it up later.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

KCCO

Too bad that's officially a club, not an NCAA sport.

We're one of three P5 schools without a national championship in any team sport. K-State and Miss. State are the other two.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I'd be curious to see how many of those, particularly in football, are subject to opinion. For many years, "we won the Rose Bowl" qualified (in some people's minds) as claiming a national title regardless of rank, or appearing at #1 in any poll, however obscure.

And what are considered "team sports", the NCAA says there are over 90 sports they give out trophys in. How few schools field teams in some of these sports.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

My statement is based off of digging through a giant pdf I found on the NCAA website that lists recognized nation champions by sport/school. I'll link what I believe to be the same pdf below. It's been a while since I sorted through it all, so I may be wrong.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

That's pretty awesome. Nice find, thanks. It appears my cynicism was unwarranted.

Good stuff. Yes Devin Carter had a great year and career. But when it came to the NCAA finals he had nothing for Stieber (tOSU). Well to be honest no one else in the world could challange him.

Just a thought but would anyone else prefer individual threads per sport instead of just lumping all the other sports into 1 thread?

This has certainly been done in the past. The problem is that if a single thread is dormant long enough, it cycles off the Tracker and people don't know it exists. If a thread covers more ground, there is more of a steady stream of comments keeping it in the Tracker.
If there is sufficient content, feel free to start a new thread, but we also don't want to clutter the Tracker with any more "hey, no new information, but let's talk about this one topic here" threads than we already do. So, for instance, if someone wanted to do a quick recap of women's Bball thus far with a little commentary, that would be a great post and would become the de facto thread for women's Bball comments.

pssh, yeah right. Next you'll say that Lawson actually transferred.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

I have tried that in the past and gotten very little response and as noted above those threads usually cycled way down the thread list and were not easy to maintain especially when we get to the spring sports. I am sure if either Womens BBall or Wrestling are getting close to major milestones, those may generate individual threads, such as winning the ACC or participating in the NCAA tournament, even last year we managed to keep those threads going while they were relevant.

Only four sports outside the Big 2 I believe are in season right now are Swimming/Dive, Women's BBall, Wrestling, and Indoor Track.

Hell, I still remember the days when I would post about Men's basketball and get crickets.

#15 VT Women play at #14 Miami tonight. This would be a huge win for us. Right now, at 15-0, we are one of three undefeated teams in the top 25 but not getting a ton of respect for it. Beating a higher ranked team, away, should take care of that. That said, we still have @ #12 Duke, # 7 FSU, #6 ND, #9 Louisville, and @#23 NC State still on the schedule. Or, as I like to call it, a great schedule for going undefeated and earning the right to not see UConn until the championship game...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Not only are we one of only 3 unbeaten teams in the top 25, but there are no unranked unbeatens. The fact that we're last of the three, by far (UConn is obviously #1, with Mississippi State at #4), really grinds my gears.

I might have to tune in for this one, I assume it's on ESPN3. What time is tipoff?

7PM

Yeah, I didn't feel like looking up league wide standings so I just looked at records of the top 25. Looking forward to working our way up the list. I mean, I understand UMd's ranking: they lost by 6 to UConn, which most teams would love to put on their resume, but a 4 loss team ahead of us?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

Just looked it up. Their four losses were to the teams currently ranked #1, #2, #5, and #13, so they weren't like other 4-loss teams. However, they did just lose a 5th game, this time to unranked Michigan State, and their best win is over a Syracuse that is atop the list of "Others receiving votes", so I expect they won't stay ahead of us long.

Oh ok, so like losing 6 football games to SEC teams. "Well they were quality losses so let's put them in the top 15"

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

The basketball polls also tend to have a lot more "inertia", in that it takes more to move a team than it does in football. Ohio State started the year #7, and has (until this week) beaten all the teams they were supposed to beat and only lost to other highly-ranked teams, so they haven't fallen too far.

Close game so far. All tied up at 50 with 3:13 left in the 3rd.

Can we get the guys some of these black uniforms?

They're a very sharp look.

Tough going in the fourth quarter. First time I have seen Magarity get pushed around down low

Tech decided to start shooting threes way too late to make up for getting manhandled underneath. Miami got way too many easy layups in the fourth quarter to separate what had been a back and forth one or two point game. Foul trouble certainly didn't help. Tech finished with one starter fouled out and three with four fouls. First loss of the season, close game for the most part on the road against a top fifteen opponent. Nothing to be really worried about.

Wrestling

The press release for this weekend's Va Duals shows David Bergida at 165. I was thinking there was a chance that David McFadden would go this weekend but I am now starting to think he might be redshirting this season. A bit of a bummer in the short term as I think we could get a trophy again with him in the lineup.

I believe you are right about McFadden redshirting, which is tough to swallow considering he has two titles this season wrestling independent. He won his class at the F&M Open last weekend and also took home another at the Cleveland State Open. Hard to understand a redshirt if you are dominating all the independent events you go to.

At least Bergida has done better than Mike Ciavarro, who started the season as their 165 guy. He went 1-4, while Bergida has gone 2-1 so far.

I'm sure there is some strategic reason, but I'm curious to the reason he's redshirting

He tore his ACL at the NCAAs last year. He is rehabbing this year.

It's Time to go to Work

"Rehabbing" the season and he has already gone 10-0 wrestling unattached. I do not know much about his weight class from a national perspective but maybe Dresser wants to give him another year to space him out from the competition to have a shot at an individual title?

I'm sure it is a tough coaching decision, he helps out the team more this year but probably helps out his chances more in the long run.

Yeah I don't consider that rehabbing, but maybe Dresser thinks it will benefit McFadden or the team in the long run.

He isn't exactly facing top tier competition while wrestling unattached. I just remember Coach Dresser saying before the season that he would probably redshirt because of the torn ACL from last year.

It's Time to go to Work

Whit is at it again. New women's Volleyball Coach just hired. How long until we are ranked?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I don't know where the time goes. The VA Duels are happening this weekend in Hampton. The VT wrestlers took care of Kent St and Lockhaven yesterday (1/13) by a combined score of 76-9. The level of competition will rise today for the Hokies in a semi-final match against North Dakota State @ 2:00 PM. The winner goes onto the finals against the winner of the Arizona St. / Oklahoma match at 8 tonight. Would be nice to win this duel tourney.

I had said that I was concerned about 133 but Gustafson has cut back and is now wrestling at 133.

And on a side note, something we all like to hear; NDSU hammered UVA yesterday 27-13.

Our 141, Norstrem was hurt and we had to forfeit his match vs Lock Haven. Hopefully, he can go today. A 6 point swing is a lot in a close match

The Wrestling Hokies had to come from behind against North Dakota State to advance and finish off #15 Oklahoma to win the Virginia Duals and move to 11-1 on the year.

Rebounding outside of Magarity is going to be a struggle in the ACC. Other problem is foul trouble. Second game in a row where Cook and Magarity were limited by foul trouble. They definitely lack the killer instinct so far in conference play. They allowed 8 offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter that led to 13 points. Still a good win, 12th in a row at home.

Be happy you can't watch it. Losing by 22 in 4th quarter. Got outscored 54-26 in 2nd and 3rd quarters. Ouch.

Our girls had no answer in the third quarter for the Duke Point Guard, now down 76-52.

Telling Stat is Hicks has no steals and six turnovers. Usually those numbers are reversed

I agree that sucks, but for basketball it seems that they set the TV slots before the season starts.

I have watched our women twice. Both were losses. I will not watch again unless they lose when I do not watch, just in case this is not a random correlation. I did think we looked much better against Miami, but we did not box out well in either game.

Here is the summary of the match with other tidbits: Link

A portion of their lineup known as "Murderers' Row."

For Tech, those bruisers are the last four guys to take the mat — Zach Epperly, Zack Zavatsky, Jared Haught and Ty Walz, wrestling at 174 pounds, 184, 197 and heavyweight, respectively.

All four are ranked in the top five nationally, with Christiansburg's Epperly ranked second.

So dominant were the four heaviest Hokies in the 38-9 domination of Pitt on Friday evening that the only points Pitt scored in any of those bouts were by escapes. The Panthers mustered no takedowns, no reversals, nothing close to a fall.

And almost all the escapes were given by our wrestlers so they can score another take down and near fall almost immediately after. They were essentially just playing with their opponents once they got tired. It was comical. If you're in town Sunday, I would urge you to go to the wrestling match in Cassel against UVA at 4.
