Hokies Finish No. 16 In Final 2016 AP Poll

Virginia Tech won ten games for the first time since 2011, and finished the 2016 season ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll. Four other ACC teams, Clemson (No. 1), Florida State (No. 8), Miami (No. 20), and Louisville (No. 21), joined the Hokies in the final poll. Do you guys think we will be ranked higher, lower, or just about right to start 2017?

How in the hell is Louisville that high? Why is Auburn STILL ranked.

Gotta respect those quality SEC losses /s

Clemson didn't need it.

I'm surprised Clemson wasn't ranked #2.

After all, Bama had the highest quality loss, since Clemson > Pitt. No wait, the scoreboard clearly says Pitt > Clemson. Well that makes sense after all, Clemson lost to a team that beat the team Alabama lost to, so they're clearly the better school.

After the loss against Syracuse I said we were somewhere between the 15-20 best team in the country, and that's where we'd be ranked at the end of the season. It feels good to be right.

Was a little disappointed we were behind 8-4 LSU and 9-4 Florida. But SEC...

Agreed. LSU and Florida jumped us (both +6 in final poll), despite the ACC overall superiority to SEC this year. *sigh*

Well they had more impressive wins in their bowl games and were pretty close in the rankings going into it. Makes sense to me.

Well, if we wanted to be ranked higher, we should have beaten an SEC team to end the season.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Not sure how I would feel if we were 17th going into FedEx versus WVU.

I suspect with our mass exodus (particularly on offense) the pundits will peg us as a mid-to-high 20s team to start the year. I could see us starting around #23 or maybe even unranked.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Most every early poll has us between 20-25. I think the cousins are around 18ish and we are around 23ish to start next year.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

TV rules demand we must be ranked to start next year.

What's the deal with Grier for WVU? If he's available, they are that high. If he's not available until mid-season, then they are not so much. I didn't know that was still an issue.

Amazingly, his availability is still not finalized.

That's crazy.

And it's going to be awhile before it is finalized.

such a weird situation. If they let him play I wonder if this could set a precedent for players hit with 1 year suspensions. Why sit it out at a school where you have baggage and might not be in the coach's good graces when you can transfer and serve your suspension while you'd have to be sitting out the year anyway?

There's still enough left on the roster for Virginia Tech to compete for the Coastal Division, but Fuente's real rebuilding begins now.

I don't see why there's an insistence that Fuente's rebuilding process has to go hand-in-hand with down years. Fuente rebuilt this program in his own system over the past spring and summer. At this point, it's feasible that we just need to reload.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

He inherited a bunch more talent that many here want to admit. It's more than fair to say that the real test for Fuente is 2017 & 2018 - especially given the loss of some of that inherited talent + Evans.

Fuente did a great job, but there were some fine players on this year's team.

stopped reading after this:

With so much transition elsewhere in the Coastal Division, this has to be Miami's year.

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

It's funnier since they say this every year.

In this respect, Miami (ACC) = Tennessee (SEC) = Michigan (B1G) = USC (Pac12). No idea who to fill in for the Big 12.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Probably the closest one, yeah.

Is this the year Miami finally turns the corner and plays for an ACC title? We're believers. Even without Brad Kaaya, the Canes return Mark Walton, Ahmmon Richards and a young defense that could be one of the best in the country. With so much transition elsewhere in the Coastal Division, this has to be Miami's year.

So despite the fact they are losing what is likely a 1st round pick starting QB, they return a RB who ran for 248 total yards and 2 TDs against GT, FSU, UNC, VT, and ND, a WR who had a total of 285 receiving yards and 0 TDs against those same schools, and a young defense that was shredded throughout the year, they're totally bak and this is their time to shine.

Hard to be too salty at a ranking that puts UNC that far down.

BREAKING: NCAA determines punishment for UNC academic violations. All UNC home games next season will be played in a hurricane, all but ensuring UNC losses.

UNC fans rejoice as those losses don't count anyway

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

I think their real punishment is that their punishment is delayed one year.

They just repeat it every year, like groundhog day, until they can just drop it, because "they've been punished enough", and "we don't want to hurt the current innocent players and fans."

And Georgia Tech is ranked ahead of us because, reasons?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Probably because we pissed that game away likely saving Paul Johnson's job. Dammit

This is so disheartening, if we win that game his seat is on fire. Since he doesn't exactly have great social skills I'm sure he gets standoffish about it and the AD has to fire him. Sigh, what could have been.

Because their backup QB kicked our ass this year. Sad but true.

The way to fix that is to beat them.

...also why I'm not worried about Clemson being successful. We hand them prob. their 2nd conf loss this year and they don't even win their division, all worries go away.

Because pollsters barely look forward when projecting forward. They've been completely wrong on GT the last 3 years. I expect that streak to continue.

Confused about Miami being so high, but otherwise I can't really argue with this. I agree with GT being above us as well seeing as they beat us pretty handily at home with mostly back ups (only lost by 10 because of a garbage time TD against soft coverage).

"I am awfully proud of the way our team played, the way they prepared, and, ultimately the way they believed."

We're getting more love from the overall ESPN power rankings which have VT at #24. To me this screams of the "Evans effect"...if Jerod says we're prob the favorites in the Coastal. Without him, our offense is a question mark. Valid point but I don't know how you pick Miami, their attrition is at the same places as ours.

To me, I like it...gives the guys who are coming back a nice chip on their shoulder.

Id almost like it more if we were unranked. You can really dial up the 'disrespect' card.

Plus, we ARE losing a lot of talent and leadership. Its going to be hard to replace right away, I think we have the talent to build back up, but its hard to expect some of these young guys to fill those shows automatically.

Plus Sam Rogers is leaving.

We're still high on the Bronco Mendenhall era at Virginia, but if 2016 showed anything, it's that there's a steeper hill to climb than most assumed. The Hoos will get there eventually, but not in 2017.

I'm sure they're referring to the elusive 0-12 perfect season.

if Blanding and Brown leave early, that's achievable. the cupboard is very bare, indeed.

We'll start 2017 right around the same spot. I'll guess 18th for our 2017 preseason AP ranking.

Only 234 days until the WVU game! sigh...

Is that all?

I can deal with that. Heck, I can stand on my head for at least 90 days.

Leonard. Duh.

I am usually fine until March but then spring ball starts. After that I start going into football withdraw. During the late spring and early summer I start watching the previous season games on YouTube and WatchESPN and counting down the days until Canadian football starts. I actually enjoy it because there are so many former college players up there and it is always cool to watch them. I love seeing Macho continue to make plays on the ball. Although he still hasn't fixed his tendency to get PI called against him.

I can't believe this season is over already.

Miami beat WVU in their last game played, but WVU is ranked higher? Michigan beat Penn State, but lost to FSU, so it was a fluke they beat PSU, despite all the bowls showing the ACC is significantly better than a BIG - made to look good by ONE good OOC game in the first week of the season? BIG way over-ranked, leading to a stupid big jump for USC, an under-ranking for FSU. Auburn's only quality win is over LSU, unless you want to count Akransas as a quality win, in which case we are under-ranked. AP poll sucks - too many voters rely on ESPN or conference homerism for an opinion.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Agree with all of this, but will say that Sam Darnold looks to be legit.

He'd probably be the first QB taken if he were eligible this year.
