Yeah, a real scream...like most of the gifs.

Seriously, is there a way to have posts with gifs automatically hidden to avoid long load times on threads that might actually have some interesting content?

NO

You can collapse posts with gifs manually and they will stay that way if you're logged in.

Alternatively, you can try one of these, depending on your browser.

I've linked/copy pasta'd these instructions so many times. Just wait until the end of this recruiting thread or the start of the next one, we'll see the same complaints again.

Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate, and hetzers gonna hetz

Yes, but to collapse them manually means I have to wait for all of gifs to load and then go through and manually close each - plus if I if view a thread on a different device (iPad, phone, laptop, desktop), I have to manually close them on each device.

As for the second piece of advice, I don't want to close all of them on my browser. I just want to close them on TKP. Plus I live mostly in Apple world.

So it would be nice if there was a way to just shut them off automatically.

When I try to manually collapse many posts in a thread, I always get an error and have to dump the cookies to get the site to load again.

Huh. When I have collapsed threads on my iPhone and then later viewed the same post on my pc, they are still collapsed.

If we can get Gervin and Dax onboard, that would be some serious pressure to get Henry locked into this class. A ton of elite defensive talent, not to mention the possibility of McNeill and Artis.

Tisdale says he's 6-4 217. Will be an early enrollee.

I'm really hoping that we get Hollifield and Gervin to add to this class. KJ Henry would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath.

Great pick-up! #NC2VT is nearly complete, just wishing for Alim and Dax (and KJ would be over the top) and our defense will be nearly complete. Add in Gervin and Artis and I think we can finish our defensive recruiting! HOKIES!!

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Ok so I wanted to wait until we got a new recruiting thread to bring up this discussion but I just want to reiterate just how significant our NC recruiting is right now with just how weak the VA class is this year.

Some time a little while back (late last year I believe) I made a comment about how VA only had like 9 kids that were ranked above 3*s. Somebody quickly mentioned that it was too early in the process to make that evaluation and that as time passed there would be plenty more kids who got bumped into the 4* range. Well we sit here in July and VA currently only has 5 kids over 3*'s. I glanced at the last few years just to check how many blue chippers VA had and here's what I found....

2018: 5
(so far)

2017: 14

2016: 6

2015: 13

2014: 10

2013: 13

Ok so long story short. Sure we may not be looking at a top 15 class yet this year but you have to be happy with how this staff is recruiting out of state. Normally you could almost assume a slight lull with such a weak in state group* but this kind of momentum under the circumstances gets me extra excited about the future!

PS: At our current juncture there are already 9, 4* kids in the class of 2019. Also while I know this means very little to nothing right now but we already hold CB's for the top three guys in the state. Two of those guys are Indian River players (can we say pipeline!) and one is Devyn Ford.

*Disclaimer: Yes I know recruiting has changed and kids being "in state" kids doesn't mean as much as it used to, but it does still matter to some kids and maybe more importantly to some parents.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

I wish the last coaching staff had taken this "NC to VT" approach back when we were dominating the state of VA. I believe the 2005 team that finished the regular season 10-1 and ranked top 5 had 20 out of 22 starters (not counting special teams) from the state of VA. If we had done what we are doing in NC for the class of 2018 back then, I really do think we would have won a national championship. It makes sense. Many of the talent hotbeds in NC are actually closer to Blacksburg than the 757. I am glad Fuente is taking this approach.

The 757 has proven to produce absolutely elite talent though

Recruit Prosim

It doesn't need to be either or

I agree. I wasn't saying to abandon the 757. But we do have all these talent hotbeds that are closer than the 757 that we used to not take advantage of. The Charlotte area has more talent than the Richmond area, and it is also closer to Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech fanatic.

Last year there was a solid amount of talent in VA and VT made a push to keep kids in-state. I don't know if we can say there's any sort of shift away from VA kids based on just this recruiting class.

So let me get this straight: In 2005 we were 10-1 and ranked in the top 5 with 20 of 22 starters from VA? Are you sure you want to use that year to make a point we should recruit more out of state players???

Not saying you are wrong, just saying this isn't a great example.

I think the point was: imagine what could have been if we had added some top out-of-state talent to that team...

No. What I'm saying is that if you have a team that was that good with all that VA talent, imagine it coupled with the best that NC has to offer as well.

Steward and McFadden committing on the 4th?

Has me like, FUCK NARDUZZI

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

French and/or Mason - at some point, could you provide an article detailing the differences between Mike and Backer positions? What specific skill sets are best suited for each? Why aren't the players interchangeable at either position? Specifically with regards to this recruiting cycle, why are Rivers, Tisdale, and Hollifield all projected at Backer? If two from that group are the best 2 LBs, what are the pros/cons of moving one to Mike?

Thought this would be of interest to the TKP community. Thank you.

Check out the French on the Bench link, and a few of the articles that mention linebackers. A lot of different references in different places, but a good summary at the top of the one on linebacker recruits. Slightly different responsibilities and thus. skill sets required.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I'm in the same boat. Before this website I've never heard of "backer" being an actual specific on field position

Recruit Prosim

None of these are specific to just Backer and Mike but they get into concepts and rules of the defense as a whole and you can really get an idea of what you need out of a Backer and Mike. There is a great deal more in the French on the Bench area.

It should go without saying but this is incredible information and everyone should join TheKeyPlay club.

Bud Foster Defensive Rules

The Whip & Rover

These three articles do a great job breaking down the terminology and scheme of the Virginia Tech defense and will give you solid background understanding.

Of course since 2007 some things have changed to adapt to more modern offenses, like we frequently employ a Nickel DB instead of the Whip LB against spread formations, and our corners no longer play Boundary / Field - they just play Left/Right to allow them to line up faster. Many of the fundamental concepts are the same though, 1-gap system, pressure-based, mixed coverages etc. The articles describe some of the adaptations that Foster had implemented in the mid-2000's to counter trends that were starting to manifest themselves. The great thing about Foster is that he never stops adapting.

When getting a commit do people may more attention to his stars or to the schools recruiting him? I know we have had many great players without the stars so here is my rating system...
If Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Clemson, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, or Oregon offer him as far as Power 5 schools go or...
Houston, Temple, Toledo, South Florida, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Western Kentucky, Appalachian State, or ECU (because they can give us and other teams trouble) those are non-power 5 schools
If I see we get a kid who has offers from the first 10 schools or offers from the second 10 schools then I know we landed a quality player regardless of his stars or his ranking. Even if he has no stars and no other offers if our staff offers him and he commits I am all for it. The success that Va Tech has had in the past and that Memphis had under Fuente's people I wholeheartedly believe in our coaching staff and I really do enjoy our strength and conditioning staff as well.
The fact we will start the season in the top 25 and could be undefeated going into the Clemson games excites me. I agree with the media folks that we will be hard to predict but I believe the talent is there on offense, defense, and special teams. If the coaches all stay together along with the new S&C staff and we continue to bring in top 25 recruiting classes there is no doubt in my mind we will be in many ACC championship games and big bowls for years to come. I just can't get past what Houston and Memphis did with lesser recruits and it seems we are getting better recruits than normal these past few classes the main thing is just having depth and the o-line and linebacker positions are proof this staff is serious. QB, WR, RB, D-line, and secondary are getting there too as far as depth is concerned.
Ok I'm sorry I just needed to go on a football rant and figured I'd get more replys here than on facebook. So when you look at recruits what do you pay more attention to and what do you think of our depth we appear to be getting? And if you are one of the ones on facebook complaining about the kid committing to us being unranked or a 2, or 3 star please stop!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

First thing I do is watch the tape. Don't really care about schools recruiting him or stars. Can the kid play?

Always choose joy.

So when you look at recruits what do you pay more attention to

Shoes. Definitely shoes.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Do you lean more on the right shoe, or the left one? Also, the ones he wears on the field, or off?

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Oh and on a more serious note I noticed that 247 knocked Steward up from 78 all the way to an 86 which brings his Composite score up to .8355.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Oh shit this is pretty big. It seems like the staff saw something special before most people.

Yeah, he needs to go ahead and commit to VT.

The Anti-Rivals rating...

Rivals thought process: VT is going after this guy? Must be a bum. FSU (OSU, 'Bama, etc.) take notice, then give out an offer. Now, FSU is going after this guy, 5 stars.

Hokie fan! Nice discussion topic man. I look at it in many ways. My initial action is to look at the offers the kid has. Then I'll watch tape. Helps me determine the level of baller we are getting. I'm really stoked about what we have coming in and about what who we have enrolled already!
P.s. we don't have to clown LOLUVA,
They clown themselves.

Hokie Love!

Depends on the prospect. I'll usually value film above everything else, but you always have to take it with a grain of salt considering the massive variance in competition in his football.

Usually scholarship offers is a pretty good indication of skill set, but that can also be misleading. Take UVA commit Will Lawrence for instance. He lists offers from Alabama, Clemson, FSU, LSU, Michigan, etc. But in reality, it's well known in recruiting circles that he received these offers back when he was a freshman and none of those schools would take him today. He was projected to be a big time prospect at an early age but he never really progressed.

Recruiting is an extremely inexact science. There are flaws in every type of evaluation so it really is hard to say which way is best.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Like others have said, offer lists form a base. With the internet and all the football camps/7v7 there aren't as many under the radar type players so if the bama's, FSU, Clemsons are offering then the kid probably has skill. On film it can be hard to judge because a highlight film shows their best plays. It also depends on position. For a DL I look at pad level, quickness off the line and how physical they tackle. LB's I look for how aggressive they attack ball carriers. Do they have any pass coverage responsibility, do they stand straight up and then react to the play or do they play with natural instincts. DB's I look for hip movement, how do the read the ball/qb and tackling. OL is very difficult because most of the time the OL with college potential are much bigger than the competition so they can be very good high school players with terrible form that doesn't translate to college where everyone is bigger and stronger. So look for pad level, aggressiveness, footwork, hand use. RB's look for how they read the hole, how quickly they get to top speed, do they make guys miss, do they run through defenders. WR's I look for if they high point the ball, how they make cuts and breaks, do they catch with heir hands or body, do they separate themselves from defenders. QB's are a whole different beast and its best to trust FuCorn on who they want.

1-0 every week

first i check to see if there are any track stats. then i look at the film. if there is a statement by the coach, i'll check that out.

i'm aware of the star ratings and reported offers, but they are both squirrely and don't override film and legit objective measures/stats.

Cole Beck has his top 5 coming out tomorrow, and I'm here with sauce.

4 out of the 5 are ACC teams. Virginia Tech is not one of them.

Rough to be in the top 5 when he doesn't hold an offer though.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

And that's my point

The staff has evaluated him multiple times... if he doesn't have an offer then it is for a reason.

Fuente values speed and he ran a 4.29 40 yet, no offer... hmmm

Ok can we stop worrying about Beck now please?

Keep calm, Gobble on

I think practically everyone is on board with this, save for a vocal minority of one.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors).

The kid could concentrate on track. He can make plenty of money there.

Exactly. Fuente values speed, but if you want to see the field as a skill position player you also have to be able and willing to block. I'm not saying that Beck can't/won't block (maybe he's just never asked to do so), but in his 'highlight' video, he doesn't at all. I could be wrong, but I think this subject might play a part in the lack of offer. And as you said, if blocking has nothing to do with it, there's obviously another reason that I'm happy to trust our staff with.

This one is a bit of a head scratcher. His top five are UNC, East Carolina, Louisville, UVa and Pitt.

Sometimes the local kid doesn't want to go to the local school. Maybe it's something else.

I'm sure Fuente has his reasons, and I trust his judgment. Only time will tell.

Sometimes the local kid doesn't want to go to the local school.

And sometimes the local school doesn't offer because the local kid can't catch the ball or block.

I'm sure he's a lovely guy, and lawd knows he can run. But the staff has seen him. Many times. No offer. Easy math.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I think (and I'm not a recruiting expert and may be 10000% wrong) if Beck were eligible for last year's class when VT had a lot more open spots thanks to attrition he'd get a scholarship offer. VT is currently at or really close to 85 scholarship kids enrolled and only has 14 seniors graduating.

Here is a difference between Beamer and Fuente, Beamer would offer the kid because he is local, Fuente offers the best players for his system, doesn't matter where they are from. Beamer's loyalty to the local HS potentially took a scholly away from a player in a different state. Trust Fuente and his evaluations as I can guarantee that Fuente has looked at this kid more than any other college coach.

1-0 every week

That and offering local kids because they are local isn't good for the player either. If he doesn't fit into your system, then it is better he play for a team where he can actually contribute.

Not that he isn't good, but not every player fits into every system.

So are you a fan of Beck's, I'm honestly not sure yet? /s

In all seriousness though, at some point you need to trust Fuente & Co's ability to evaluate talent. The kid is local, we get that, so he would absolutely be on their radar.

I made it because I was his friend in high school, he approached me to do it, and I need the experience. Nothing about personal involvement made me form my own opinion that he's going to do something impressive wherever he ends up in college?

If anything, I was able to actually watch him play games, unlike 97% of the rest of this board. My personal opinion is based off of what I saw on the field, not on film.

But if you want to go ahead and say that my opinion is too influenced by me making a video for Twitter, go right ahead.

Well, I know people too... got to separate the business from the fan hood. He is a great kid and may turn out. It just isn't a smart business move. You can't let feelings mix in the recruiting world or they will get hurt. Dude will be a good player for a system that can use his talents more effectively. Hate to say it but GT would be a great fit for him.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I've seen many a player run all over SWVA football fields and doing it very well. Doesn't mean they'll be gamechangers at the P5 level. Not saying Beck won't, but success in River Ridge or Mountain Empire or Three Rivers or whatever districts are named now rarely translates to the P5 level.

Always choose joy.

Nubian Peak is a great comparison, we signed him out of Pulaski around 2008 and he was unstoppable in the area and ranked in the top 30 players in Virginia or so. Beamer took a shot on him and it obviously didn't work out. Not saying Beck won't but the competition level in the area is just not good for predicting how they will do in college.

Love the camaraderie in this class. I really think these guys are going to do something special in the burg!

Seems like our boy QP had a similarly rough day today in his game. He and Tuttle both underperformed and their team seemed to struggle. The 247 live update thread mods were saying that Patterson's receivers were yelling at him to throw the ball deep. I think this kid will be a solid QB for us, just sounds like he had a difficult couple of days. But, so did the other QB on his team (Tuttle is a very highly-touted recruit) so it may have been more than just QB play.

Hard to throw it deep when you hit kids in the numbers and they drop it

Keep calm, Gobble on

He's going to have some great wide receivers at VT.

Honestly, kind of a win win. Dude goes to the open but doesn't show off to gain grand attention. Plus I follow the stories on instagram bleacher report, there are a lot of look at me divas. Kind of hides behind all the showboats

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

He's 100% the kid we need. I'm fine with him avoiding the big dogs

Keep calm, Gobble on

I agree, not at all the end of the world and still proud of the kid for making it to the event, although i would have loved to see the kid ball out and turn down the big dogs and remain committed to us. Either way, glad he's (going to be) a hokie!

There will be plenty of opportunity to show how good he is at VT.

Yea I have been following along and that was a little tough to read. I figure to with the way the 247 guys have approached QP's rating they will probably use this as a stupid excuse to continue to keep his rating down. Oh well.

It's also important to remember how poor of a job a 7v7 setup does at showing a kid's viability in Fuente's offense. A 7v7 game caters about as much to a pro style guy as possible. I don't mean this to bash him but can you imagine Evans in a setup like this? Evans set the VT QB records all while making it past the first read in his progression maybe a few times all season. I know part of that was by design but part was from ability too. The point is that QP doesn't need to be Peyton Manning to succeed in the art of CornFu.

You are correct, sir

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

If I'm QP, every throw is going to Pitts. Build timing and comfort now

Quincy is a smart kid and knows what he's doing with all those checkdowns. Because all of those checkdowns are going to none other than mr. kyle pitts to show him some love and get him to commit to the good guys. Screw all those other wideouts who don't have a chance of being Hokies.

I'm going to say just one thing about QP. I don't get as caught up in the physical tools as you guys- whether he can throw this type of pass, has the ability to checkdown, etc. Maybe it's my gender/ age/ whatever, but I tend to focus more on personal intangibles-the way he handles himself in interviews, or the way he expresses himself- humbly-or doesn't express himself- too cocky- but he is going to be a real special kid for us I believe. I haven't felt this way about a player since TT. There are so many similarities- good ones- that make me feel this way. You may not be able to coach speed, but you can't coach leadership, either. He's smart as hell, and seems very grounded. I cannot wait to see what he does as a Hokie. My gut says we got a great one headed to Blacksburg.

Sounds like you are applying the Sam Rogers measuring stick ma'am. Well chosen, well chosen indeed.

BAG and LA,

Any word on the following:

Kalon Gervin

How about Beck and Spalding??? /s

But I'm really interested to hear about McNeill, he's probably my most wanted recruit still left, up there with Walker and Henry.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

All three are supposed to be visiting for the BBQ.

I'd say we slightly trail PSU for George still. Having Fields decommit definitely helped us there but I'm not sure it'll be enough.

We're probably sitting at third for McNeil right now. IMO NCSU and UNC have a pretty sizeable lead over the rest of the pack. Hopefully the BBQ will help us make up ground there. Really wish the staff had put more pressure on him when he was flirting with committing in the early spring.....

With Gervin, well, let's just say he's going to end up cancelling his Oregon visit on the 29th.

Jordan McFadden just chose the Good Guys!

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Wow, 17 commits by early July, this class is filling up fast. I saw a while ago that someone thought we would only take 23 this cycle. I have no clue if that's accurate but if it is I'm curious how people would ideally fill our last 6 spots. Here would be my picks, in order:

McNeill
Walker
Henry
Hollifield
Gervin
Pitts

Just missed the cut:
George/Spalding
Bradley/another OL
Artis
Durant
Mitchell

Thoughts?

I think another O lineman is a must

I know we've added some depth at WR, but Daniel George would be a great addition. The kid is a beast.

Dax Hollifield at LB too.

I think #1 has to be KJ Henry. Good DEs are a must in our system and KJ is a game changing playmaker.

Rasheed Walker is probably my number one target left on the board, given his skill level and the position he plays. KJ is up there too, obviously.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Yeah that's a good breakdown BrooklandHokie considering spots are at a premium now.

I see spots open per position and top targets as :

QB: 0 (QP is the man)
RB: 0-1 (Flip Slade or Elliot)
OL: 1-2 (Walker, Gwyn, or TJ Bradley)
WR: 0-1 (George or Spalding)
TE: 1 (PITTS or Mitchell)
DE: 0-1 (Henry or nothing)
DT: 0-1 (McNeill or nothing)
LB: 2 (Dax and Artis)
DB: 1-2 (Gervin, flip Graves)

That leaves us with a potential of 5-10 spots left depending on need and the numbers, with the potential to grab 1 5* guy (Henry), 5 more 4* guys (Dax, Walker, McNeill, Pitts and Gervin), and 4 high 3* guys (Artis, Bradley, Gwyn, Graves)

I'm tweaking already! GIVE ME MORE I WANT MORE

VT wouldn't accept Rafferty's commitment st this time.

FWIW no one on the staff has been informed of a commitment.

- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Any idea of the OL plan if Rafferty isn't a part of it? Seems like the only other options are Walker, Bradley, and Gwynn, and it doesn't seem like we are in the lead for any of them.

Honestly unless we hit it out of the park with sheed at the BBQ or we convince Gwyn to visit before a commitment to one of the in-state schools, we'll likely evaluate OL during the high school season and issues offers then. Similar to what we did with Debose last year (obviously a different position but similar timing).

Nice! My guess is Gervin, he seems like the only recruit that was that close to committing.

I LOVE TKP! You guys crack me up. I'm this funny in my dreams.

Anyone else see the article on 247 about 3* CB Jermaine Waller saying VT is his leader?

I guess I have no idea how recruiting works, but I've heard Gervin is our final CB target, and we seem to be in a good spot with him. But are we still pursuing other CBs in case he doesn't work out? Do other recruits know Gervin is our top choice? Do we tell the other kids that we won't accept their commit until we hear from Gervin? I've also seen things on 247 saying we are still pushing for a DC WR, but I thought we were George or bust at WR?

I would love a behind the scenes look at how these types of conversations go; gives me a new respect for the balance these coaches have to have in recruiting between being honest with recruits and still making sure we get the best kids for our team.

I would love a behind the scenes look at how these types of conversations go;

^^ agreed ^^ It would be fascinating to know how all this happens at the working level- but I expect that the experience is unique to each each program/recruit. I doubt we will ever know a lot of details, so we are going to just have to evaluate based on results.

#thingsiblamethemvsfor

I say take both Cornerbacks. Yeah that may give us 6 or 7 for the class but some could end up at Safety or even Wide Receiver so it's well worth the risk, considering the misses in last years class and potential for injury. I like where our LB, DE, CB, S, WR, OL, and QB depth is headed, feels like we haven't had this in a while if ever.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Has anyone else noticed the KJ Henry wears number 10 and that is a retired number for us? Maybe Fuente can unretire the number to show him how much we want him?

1-0 every week

That's a big time recruiting move.

In all seriousness, I don't like even the suggestion of unretiring the number of our first consensus All-American who died in the Marshall crash less than 3 years after his last game played for us.

Don't let this comment take away from the fact that Arkansas blew a 24 point 2nd half lead in the Belk Bowl.
Don't let the Belk Bowl take away from the fact that Matt Ryan blew a 25 point 2nd half lead in the Super Bowl.

Absolutely.

I also don't think a jersey number will make his decision.

#10 stays retired, #25 changes players each week based on special teams performance. Some things just can't change.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

... but #25 was retired until that changed last year.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

I tend to think unretiring a legendary coach's number as a way to honor his legacy is just a lil bit different than unretiring a number to land a croot

Recruit Prosim

Woah slow down there buddy. We only say that if he DOESNT choose us.

A little late and I know its not July news but I just watched film on several of our commits. Couple of observations:

(1) DeJuan Ellis is crazy quick in the open field! He adds some bulk (and assuming he can catch), we've got ourselves another Peter Warrick. This kid can take one to the house with every touch - that threat is going to create openings for the rest of our playmakers too. I know he won't be a QB, but he has an MV1 effortless and beautiful deep ball.

(2) Eli Adams! Why the heck is this kid a low 3 star? IMO, he's the most explosive DE I've seen from a VT recruit in a long time. I hate to dip back into 1999 again, but Adams' explosion into the backfield is reminiscent of the Terror Dome founder, Corey Moore. One can only hope!

Does anyone beside me expect DeJuan Ellis to decommit because of all the hype QP has gotten? Or is he open to playing a position that is not QB?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Sorry if it's already been discussed somewhere. I'm not one to be negative and I don't have any #sauces, but the decommitment lingers in my mind.

He was never going to play QB at a P5 school. He is just too small. He will be a WR or something for us.

The response was because Ellis already decommitted and reopened his recruitment as an athlete and then recommitted to VT shortly after.

You can find the details in this TKP article.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

This. He decommitted and came back. He is being recruited as an athlete now.

I think he would have already derecommitted if he were going to...

To be fair, if I was a UNC fan I wouldn't consider VTs success "dominance". We may have 5 of the top 30, but they have 4 of the top 11, all 4*s, with a shot with 3 out of the 4 remaining uncommitted top 10 players.

I'm as excited about our recruits from NC as anyone, but wouldn't say we are dominating the state.

Unfortunately, correct. As of right now, we are what UVA used to be to us in VA - pulling in enough of their in-state talent to prevent them from having an elite class. However, the narrative changes if we get Dax, KJ, and McNeil.

Also, we are making important inroads so that when UNC implodes and their coaching staff jumps ship, we are going to be well-positioned.

However, the narrative changes if we get Dax, KJ, and McNeil.

Not going to happen though.

I'd take 2/3 there.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

2/3 is a home run but I think its more likely we get 0 than 2.

Why? Henry seems like biggest reach but still potentially there to get.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Henry I've written off already. He may like us in passing and put us in whatever final 3, but the guy is going to a big time school. This years Shaun Wade. Fun to wish on though. I'll happily be wrong, but I don't think the peer pressure from Tre, DJ and Alan will be enough.

Dax is obviously the most likely but FSU is putting the heat on him now that they missed Mitchell. No one should ever feel good about that. Long recruitment and anything can happen

McNeil I don't know. I think we had a shot before he blew up and let it slip. But I think he's going to be another recruit that everyone wonders why the hell he chose UNC. The fact that he has Duke, NC St and UNC in his top 6 when he had bigger offers from Michigan, Florida, Clemson tells me he cares more about staying local than results on the field. So our advantage of having a better D than any of those teams probably doesn't mean much. His recruitment does seem to be all over the place so I think we could sway him, just that we aren't in the drivers seat anymore.

Just the way I see it. I'll be very happy to be wrong and get 2 or 3

We'll get 1 of the 3.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

It's pretty impressive for 1 out of state school to pull that much talent from another state. This is not 1 or 2 players. It's 5 with a possible 7-8. So in that sense it's a huge step forward

Impressive. But not dominance as stated above.

I'm looking forward to seeing Fuente kick it into high gear. VT needs to get into the upper tier with FSU and Clemson, and to do that we need to beat them. I'm looking at you, Clemson, and next year FSU!

SO MUCH THIS. Uva is no longer a rival. Even if they eventually beat us soon they are still no longer a rival. We need to rival Clemson and fsu. That's the true rival.

eventually beat us soon

Let's Go Hokies!!

We can't just force rivalries with people haha. We're not Bob Diaco and UConn. Hell, FSU and UVA are more rivals than us and FSU. They even play for a trophy.

We need to beat the snot out of uva every year so that they have no hope of ever making up any ground in recruiting. Beyond that, if we beat Clemson and F$U a few times -- especially in the ACCCG -- the rivalry will come. Not ignoring how hard that will be, but that's how you "force" a rivalry.

"Those who jump into the void owe no explanation to those who stand and watch."
--unknown

UVa is still our in-state rival, and we absolutely need to take care of business against them. We still need to watch out for Mendenhall and any trickery or witchcraft he might try to bring to bear...

I meant that our sights should be set on FSU and Clemson within the ACC. I'd like VT to be consistently mentioned alongside them, and the only way to get there is to recruit well and to beat them when we go head to head. There are a lot of teams in the Coastal who get mentioned every year as potential champions, and there's not enough separation between those teams and VT.

Not to mention that they lost another LB this week. Transferring to K-State.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I had a different reaction. To me he seemed kind of resigned to the shittiness that is LOLUVa Football. It was pessimistic, confused, and wistful for an era that current students don't understand because they were not alive when it occurred.

Meanwhile, current VT undergrads have never seen a world without the Internet and a yearly Hokies bowl game.

He actually made an argument for that fan base being okay with winning 5-7 games a season. He called BM a good coach in one paragraph, then called him a placeholder the next. Honestly, I found it kind of sad.

I mean, I still got aroused. But I felt bad about it.

I mean, I didn't feel that bad.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Probably been discussed elsewhere previously, but curious why we haven't offered Cole Beck? Pretty impressive offer list and Blacksburg kid and we have no interest? Got to be more to this than meets the eye.....

I'm really just confused as to how you managed to miss this.

Long story short: he's a speed guy, not a football player. Fuente wants a football player. He's been evaluated every way by the coaching staff and they decided to pass. Very highly unlikely Beck gets an offer from VT.

From everything that I had read on this board about Beck he sounds like Michael Johnson. A kid that went UVA in the early 2000s and graduate from Heritage High with my younger sister. He had real impressive numbers in HS but it turned out that he was just a speed guy. In HS that was enough but on the next level the athletes take better angles. I don't remember Mike doing much at UVA......

"Probably been discussed elsewhere"

This brings up an interesting point, though:

When we offer and he commits, will we still have room for Khalon Laborn?

And: who replaces Frank Beamer? Thoughts?

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Something something Drew Harris. Something else Korrin Kirven goal line fullback.

Are Rasheed Walker, Alim McNeil, Jovaughn Gwynn or De'Von Graves coming to the BBQ in a few weeks? The first three should be the most important prospects left on the board IMO. As much as I'd love to have George, Pitts and/or Hollifield, the OL-DL is where the championships are won.

Walker, McNeil, and George will all be there. Dax is telling both VT and SC that he will be at their respective BBQ's that weekend. Gwyn and Pitts are possible, but I do not believe Graves will be there. I think that ship has sailed. Kid wants to be in VT but his parents want him to honor his word on his commitment. Have to respect them for that.

Btw, Gervin will be there as well and good news for the Hokies is a very real possibility.

He's definitely going to FSU.

Surprisingly, it's not Alabama or Clemson who is recruiting the 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect the hardest. It's a team who is on the rise with second-year coach Justin Fuente.

"Virginia Tech," Henry said of the school who is on him the hardest. "They're a much smaller school compared to Alabama and Clemson, but I like them. They're doing the right things. They're close to home. They have good relationships with my parents. The coaches have shown lots of love."

Keep calm, Gobble on

I want to get in the mindset of him not ending up here in Blacksburg, but there are so many little things that pop up every now and then that just get my hopes up so high.

Expectation Management should be a required college course.

Wish I'd learned it.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

If I remember correctly, it was in fact not happening in that episodes.

Why did he have to say *much* smaller?

I mean - "your boobs may be smaller than Jen's and Jess', but I like them"
sounds a lot better than -
"your boobs are *much* smaller than than their's..."

Kidding of course but his statements do give reason to maintain optimism. All it takes is 1 or 2 big recruits and a big win to change that *small* perspective. Maybe KJ can start the change!

That's the one comment that bothered me. In what way does he mean we are smaller? We are a bigger school than Clemson and almost the same student population as Alabama. In fact, we are one of the largest universities in Virginia. I think he means a smaller school perception-wise to him, which leads me to believe he's more interested in a program like Alabama or Clemson.

I would love for him to come here, but I unfortunately just don't see it. I hope I'm wrong.

Smaller stadium, smaller budget, smaller staff, smaller national prestige.

Agreed, I'm sure that's what he meant. Smaller program, smaller perception to him. It just sounds funny to me for someone to say Virginia Tech as a whole is a "smaller school." I wonder what he would say if Wake Forest were recruiting him hard. A microscopic school?

Already a member. I think we need to keep winning and win on the big stage in order to help shift perception. Money is a big part of it, but recruits need to see that Tech is on the rise to being a national power once again. WVU on Labor Day weekend and Clemson at home this year are huge opportunities we need to take advantage of, as well as avoiding the classic Tech letdown games when we have momentum in our favor.

100% agree.

Keep calm, Gobble on

...So we need to go undefeated and win the national title then?

But seriously if WVU and Clemson are games we have to win and we can't have any let down games, you might as well say you think we need to make the playoff.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

The more I really think about, we honestly need a serious magical run of a season (defined as seriously contending for the playoffs) soon to put to bed the "Chokies" and "can't win the big one" narratives. Unfortunately, we really reinforced a lot of those perceptions over the years. We can't perpetually be in a building towards next year mode - at some point we need to get over the hump. I feel like that was one of the lip services we heard often in the later CFB years; "Just wait until next year."

I have to point out VT's victory at Ohio State, and last year's comeback against Arkansas. I can't disagree that the prescription for vanquishing the "can't win the big one" narrative is winning the big one, though. Sure wish VT hadn't gotten the turnover bug in the game against Tennessee. That one would have been sweet.

Is it possible to get turnover dysentery? It was more than a bug sadly.

"Read this article on 247 earlier today and even though VT has ended up on the short end of these situations for awhile now, thing like this makes me feel optimistic. "

This way lies madness.

Maybe that "smaller" comparison portion of the quote dealt a bit with his perception of VT other than just the football program. Having a kid who looked at all of the schools (not for football obviously) I remember him saying that VT definitely seemed geographically smaller. It's not, necessarily, but because the way the campus is laid out, Tech is much more of an cohesive, "easy to get around" campus. C'mon KJ, just remember: sometimes the best things come in small packages! :)

The Tuscaloosa campus seems much bigger than Blacksburg, more spread out, and that humongous stadium adds to the perception.

Most of the huge, national, blue blood programs have stadiums between 90k & 100k+ capacity, generating that much more revenue for them. Bigger.

The Clemson brand is big these days. Hope Tech gets there in the next five years.

Agree. The idea of Clemson being a "big" school is merely the fact they're on the biggest stage. Clemson is bigger than VT is size, stadium, budget, etc., but not by much.

Hell, it was just a few years ago that Clemson was a middle of the ACC after-thought, that was best known for choking when they were about to reach the big stage. If Clemson can overcome their perception, so can VT.

Dabo has done a phenomenal job in virtually burying the phrase "Clemsoning." Here's to Fuente killing "Chokies" with fire and a good curb stomp.

BAG or any "in the know" folks, what's up with these CB's going to UNCheat for Dax today? Did they have a thing?

Dax has been pretty quiet from what I know. I know UNC had some event that he went to. One of the insiders for unc must have thrown out blue ball to see what sticks and all the rest followed. He probably smiled at something at UNC and someone saw it!

He smiled thinking to himself how he is going to absolutely wreck the Tarheels leading the LPD.

They didn't realize he was smiling at how quaint their facilities are compared to the Beamer Barn and Lane Stadium.

Nothing to worry about at this point. I believe we are still in really good position. I think SC is fading in the race. I believe he will still be at the VT event on July 21st-22nd. Getting him back to Blacksburg bodes well for our chances.

I always look at who put in the predictions. One UNC insider the rest are just jumping on the train to be "right"

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I did see a picture that had both Dax and Payton Wilson at something that looked like a UNC camp. I have no idea if it was a recent picture, but the thought of playing a team that had both those guys at LB made me cringe.

Also, has VT been in contact with Payton Wilson since he committed to the trash heels?

I don't think much of the UNC 247 guy to be honest, dude predicts everyone to UNC but doesn't seem super plugged in. Then again I am not too impressed with Evan Watkins' prognostication ability so maybe I am just a hater. Either way the person who started the run is Tom Loy who I actually think is pretty reputable. No #sauces either way but I feel like UNC has been a bit overlooked to this point in Dax's recruitment.

Isn't there a guy from west virginia that has shown some interest? Stills, maybe??

We made his top 6 a while back, but haven't heard anything about us since. Seems like he's between Florida and WVU.

Damn, this article makes it sound like we're not as much of a lock as I previously thought. I'd be scared if he took that OV to Florida. I don't like hearing that they're telling him he is a top priority. Also, what's up with "especially Oklahoma"?
EDIT: I just read he's taking a visit to Alabama tomorrow as well.

Feel very good about it. Will be a fight to get pen to paper but am very confident he' be on our commit list at some point in the cycle.

Kyle Pitts announcing July 21 per 247. Is he still coming to the BBQ? If so, that is a very good sign.

Apparently Florida is holding a Friday Night Lights recruiting camp on the 21st. I don't know if he will be at the BBQ but I hope he is committing to the good guys to start the BBQ weekend off right. Pitts on Friday and Gervin on Saturday would make the BBQ taste real good!

I hope thats the case but considering the BBQ weekend doesnt start until the 21st and he already has made up his mind, I dont have high hopes for him committing to the good guys. Wish we could get him to campus where we could have sealed the deal.

No school knows either way but as of this weekend he was telling coaches and other recruits that he'd be at VT's BBQ this weekend.

With that said, I think he'll be heading to UF.

Seriously. Let's hope we can make a splash or two at this BBQ coming up over the weekend. Several big targets seem to be trending away from us at the moment.

Also, I know this is the biggest moment in these kids' lives, and they totally deserve to enjoy the process and all the visits and attention. But it seems to me that it's really difficult to build a strong class without several big time recruits jumping onboard earlier in the cycle to help bolster the class and recruit others. It seems we always get in this predicament where most of our top targets want to enjoy the ride and are in "wait and see" mode. Meanwhile, that leaves plenty of time for them to start looking elsewhere and start moving in other directions. I know we made big moves at the end of the cycle last year with the bulk of the top guys coming on late, but that is very risky business sometimes.

What I've learned the last couple years is that what you think you know about our recruiting cycle in July is lightyears away from what actually comes to fruition in February, and in a good way. Sure, we'll lose some guys along the way, but the team we'll end up with will have a boatload of quality talent in necessary areas, and a significant chunk of that will come from guys who aren't yet on our radar.

It just always stinks when a couple of the good ones we've been courting early start trending elsewhere. We generally don't tend to make that ground back up in those situations.

Yeah with the offer from Bama and a CB to Ohio State, those are arguably the two toughest teams and coaches to recruit against (throw FSU in there for kicks). He still making it to the BBQ this weekend though?

Nope. Camping at OSU.

This BBQ is sounding like that party you invite people to early in the week, which will mostly be just kicking it with the guys and having some beers on the back deck, but a really great time and the safe choice. Then on Friday, they get invited to this really big party with a sweet pool and tons of girls coming, so they bail on you at the last minute.

It's frustrating having recruits onboard and then jumping off the second something better comes along in their eyes. What was looking like a huge weekend suddenly has lost a lot of steam.

Ship is setting sail as we speak. Focus shifts to Jermaine Waller as the next DB priority. Waller will be at the BBQ this weekend. Still hoping we can flip Graves from NCSU but with his ties to NCSU I am not sure we will be able to he is pretty solid as of now.

I'm with you on Graves, he's underrated IMO by the recruiting services. Are we still talking to Jairus Brents from Louisville or Rayshad Williams from Memphis?

I am not sure about those. Gervin actually tweeted out he will be in Blacksburg. Sending all kinds of mixed signals to the staff. I am glad that he has decided to move forward with original plans. Wise on his part sometimes those offers from the big schools aren't committable.

Considered me shocked! /s

Felt like he would use us as a place holder till something better came along. Would love to see him as a Hokie but glad this is happening before he committed

Any insight on what might have went down here? I have to imagine he got caught up in the excitement of the Bama offer, and then an invite to this OSU event which may have been his preferred school. Was this a great job of our staff working on him to sway him back for this weekend? I have to imagine he should be concerned about a non-commitable offer from OSU considering the guys they've recruited at his position lately.

Not sure on the exact details but if I had to guess Fu told him "if you're not in Blacksburg this weekend then you never will be again unless it's as the away team" and he decided to take the sure thing rather than having to earn his offer at OSU.

I really like the stance. I mean look what happened with DJ Matthews essentially flirting with and trolling us all year, then Jimbo comes in and tells him to cut the shit out. I don't mind the hard line approach. You may lose a few guys here and there, but it gives you more credibility long-term.

DJ wasn't trolling last year, his interest was very very legit. If it weren't for external forces at home he likely would've followed his heart and ended up at VT. Also would have helped tremendously if Ford had stayed as they're very very close.
