Let's go boys! Need to definitely go 7/7 this morning.

I think you meant 1-0, seven times.

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

The brackets linked are from last year.

Thanks Nate! I was going to do the same thing but I'm too lazy!

Go Hokies! Get it done this year Joey!

Where is Lawson?!

So excited for this, really feeling like the guys are focused and feel a bit disrespected by their recent comments. Will be checking in on twitter during the day sessions today and tomorrow while at work.

Watching on my iPad at my desk. Turned it to the ESPN3 scoreboard channel so I can see which mat a VT wrestler is coming up on.

Joey Dance coming up first on the ESPNU broadcast.

If Dance meets Gilman (Iowa) in the final he'd better score some points!

Where is Lawson?!

Ok I must of missed Dance they are into 133 and 141 already of which we have nobody. What did Joey do?

you'd think they would have mat assignments on the bracket. They do that even in HS!?

Where is Lawson?!

According to the scorecard he will be wrestling next on Mat 7

Dance is wrestling right now. Mat 7. Currently 8 - 2 - Dance in the lead. about a minute left in the 1st.

Dance wins 18-2, nice bonus points on the TF to start

Dance 17-2 near fall in 2nd period

I don't tweet. Thanks anyway!

Where is Lawson?!

You don't have to tweet to check the feed.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Chisko on Mat 6 next

Where is Lawson?!

Hokies go 7-0 in round 1.

Round 2 starts at 7pm. According to seeds we should go 6-1 in the night session with Mastriani being the only underdog.

Thanks for the heads up. Got to catch the last half of Walz's match. Looked like Tynan (SDSU) didn't appreciate Walz playing through the final buzzer. Probably one of the few guys who would dare to smack Walz in the head.

Mastriani is certainly the underdog, but looked good in his match. I'm hoping he can pull the upset.

Any major upsets in the tournament yet?

The biggest so far was Okie State's Crutchmer, (#7 seed at 174) falling in the first round to an unseeded opponent from the pigtail match. We need lots of upsets like this for the top teams (Okie State, Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa) if VT is to have a realistic shot at a team title. So far, Crutchmer's early defeat (assuming he doesn't rampage through the consolation bracket like Epperly did last year) and Suriano's injury seem to be helping our chances.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”

Thanks for update. Hard for me to follow. I did see we were 9th after session 1 and only 2 points behind the logjam at 4th.

I believe PSUs 285 lost. I will check. Qualifying only 7 is hurting us. Think we are in 9th right now. After I figured out espn's scheme it was fun to watch. Mastriani looked the best I have seen him all year.

Where is Lawson?!

Nevills won his match 4-2 on a late takedown. All 9 of their guys advanced.

Eight. One guy was a medical forfeit.

Thanks Frank!

Oops. I remembered Suriano's forfeit. I just forgot that they only qualified 9 wrestlers. Thanks for the correction.

I hadn't seen that Suriano forfeited yet. That is pretty big for Joey in his path to getting to the finals.

Gilman is a mongoose if Joey sees him in the finals!

Where is Lawson?!

Fun First Round Fact:
VT is the only team with multiple wrestlers in the tournament that went undefeated in Round 1. WVU's lone representative advanced, and Penn State's Suriano was a medical forfeit. Everyone else has at least one wrestler in the consolation bracket.

Round OneESPN2 IDIOTS@!

Where is Lawson?!

Dance had a major decision 12-2. Opponent almost robbed him of that MD but he got a takedown plus riding time to get 3 late points.

Fuck espn2

Where is Lawson?!

SOOO CLOOSSEE Mastriani

It was a great match. Tough lose.

Hats off to the kid from Missouri, but dammit, I'm gutted for Sal. So freakin close.

Sal loses 3-1 to a sudden victory takedown :-(

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I'm pretty sure he was pinned which sucks if we are competing with Missouri for a podium spot and they got those bonus points.

EDIT: Early still but looks like we will be close to Mizzou in the standings.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

He was pinned. That was was brutal. Sal was in deep on a shot and got caught on his back. Painful one there.

I know I thought he had it.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

He totally had it. That was physically painful to watch it slip away like that.

Zavatsky got out worked. Tough loss.

Disappointing performance by Zavatsky. He's into consolation early again this year.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Putting it gently there. I'm not sure he took a shot the whole match, except the half-shot crap that got him put on his back.

If I'm remembering correctly, the same thing happened last year. He just wrestles so timid in the NCAAs. Throughout the year he wrestles so well and loose. Then he gets here and he just looks so tight and like the pressure is getting to him.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Definitely. If he loosens up and wrestles, he's pretty darn good. But then he looks like he's so scared of making a mistake his offense goes out the window.

There was one match I saw last year where there was a scramble and it looked like he would've been taken down with a chance of back points. Then all of a sudden he had the most athletic move I've seen out of a guy his size to end up on top with back points. He has great instinct and technique to compete with anyone. ZZ just needs to be loose and aggressive and rely on his skills.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

I saw none of this due to espn shit!

Where is Lawson?!

Yeah you gotta watch ESPN3 to choose the specific mat.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

yeah I know! did that this morning!

Where is Lawson?!

5 quarter finalists is not bad. Easily could have been 7.

Both losses were tough for different reasons but overall it wasn't a disastrous round . Dance looks ready this year, a huge opportunity opened up for Chishko with an upset of the 2 seed, and Epperly, Haught and Walz have basically been in control even if not scoring bonus points.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Very true. I was ecstatic for Mastriani, he just got caught with his hips out of position. Zavatsky was so frustrating, he could have really controlled that match, but was too content to try to ride it out.

I agree on Epp and Walz, but I'm not so sure about Haught. I can't put my finger on it, but he didn't look "right" out there last night. I'm starting to worry about him. I didn't see his first round match, but have read that he was looking tired. And in the second round he just looked sluggish and/or lacking confidence. Is he fighting off an illness or something that I haven't heard about? Let's hope he turns it on today and tears it up.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

Looked that way in the acc finals as well, but he had his nose plugged pretty good and I figured it was just from a lack of oxygen.

Keep on winning boys

Where is Lawson?!

Devastated for Mastriani. He was about as close as it gets to the upset. Zavatsky fell victim to the same thing that has gotten him before. Hope they go to consolations with the same attitude the Hokies did last year and collect All American honors.

It's Time to go to Work

This link has updated brackets. Scroll down page to find each weight class. If Walz can win the first match today he will face Medberry (#2) to get to Snyder.

Updated brackets

Where is Lawson?!

didn't realize Mueller from LOLUVa advanced and will face Dance in the next round. Any time you can put a whooping on a wahoo, it looks to be a good day.

Hope Zav can bounce back and still get all American status. Really needed the 6 high seeds to win yesterday.

Yeah ZZ does tend to wrestle pretty defensively minded not really wanting to get out of position and that can cost you in these tournaments as giving up a single takedown makes it hard to come back from if your not taking good quality shots and pressing your opponent. Sal wrestled extremely well so far with a TF and losing in SV to the #3 seed. He is the opposite of ZZ in that he likes to push the pace and create takedowns, sometimes that gets him out of position like in the SV and in the ACC finals, but more times than not that leads to take downs or stall calls on his opponent and and I think he has a good shot at AA if he wrestles the same way in the CB.

Dance and Chinsko looked great and the upper weights have been very solid and not timid like Haught looked in the ACC finals. This bodes well, but this morning is going to be a tough round, as Dance and Waltz are the only two that have favorable matchups even though Muller did wrestle Dance tough this year so that will be close. Chinsko lost to Mayes earlier this year but that could help out knowing your opponent's tendancys and Epp and Haught both have PSU guys so you know they will be ready to go.

I actually thought Sal's match was the most defensive match I have ever seen him wrestle. He was aggressive at all in regulation and had the stall warning on him... I was really worried the ref was going to call stalling on him again in the 3rd which could have cost him the match but luckily the Missouri guy wasn't being too aggressive either. Man... what a heartbreaking match for sal. I think the next round was a pretty favorable matchup for him and that upset would have been absolutely huge for the team race.

Yeah I was speaking about in general more than in that match besides the ending of the match. He wrestled very well and was really glad he went out with an AA.

Current team standings:

TIL, you need a heck of a lot more than 7 qualifiers to even have a chance to win this thing.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

"Strength in numbers" ain't a cliche for nuttin'

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Since when was "2" = "a heck of a lot more" ?

Penn State has 7/9 still in the championship bracket and is in 1st place.

If we had 6/7 or 5/7 in the championship bracket we'd still be in striking distance.

Increasing the pool of top talent by 30% is a huge deal. Especially if you have some of them performing below seeding. To win, you need multiple individual champions AND a good number of guys to make it deep into the bracket. (See: PSU). We have a ways to go and it's looking like this year is a step back from last year unless our guys remaining win their consolation brackets.

Seems like joey is losing to Mueller based on vt wrestling twitter down 2-0 in the 3rd.

scratch that joey with a late takedown to go 2-2 and force OT.

joey loses 4-2.

Crushing loss for Joey... thought he had a great chance to make it to the finals. Wow

welp, now I has the sadz...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Terrible start to the day.

Dance just lost in sudden vic to Mueller. Same old same old.

Where is Lawson?!

needs to shake it off and wrestle his way back to a shot at 3rd.

I really can't believe Mueller was able to ride him out the entire 2nd period. Mueller then scored a point off of Joey's caution calls in the 3rd so he had to let him up. Nearly had NF points at the end of regulation to win it. Man that is disappointing.

They've got no answers on bottom. Another tough loss.

Chishko loses 4-2

SM has MD over #13 in wrestle backs.

Where is Lawson?!

loluva a head of us!

Where is Lawson?!

Epperly gets smoked by Hall /PSU Major decision. Epp looked like a zombie out there. We really don't have anything when on bottom.

Where is Lawson?!

Chisko and Epp were painful to watch.

What is going on!?! 0-3 in the quarters so far.

Terrible on bottom. If you can't get the easy 1, you're in for a long match.

dammit, I was really hoping wrestling would go well today to make up for bball last night.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Haught with the 7-3 decision, finally got 1!

at least we have one all American for sure.

ZZ eliminated from the wrestle backs... another disappointing showing from him after a high seeding for the second straight year.

damn not good.

Zavatsky got stuck. Bad tournament for him. He's got two more years though, hopefully he will do better in the future.

Walz with a dominant win. He has the best chance to make the finals out of him an Haught. Haught will have J'den Cox.

haught has a chance. wrestled very close earlier this year. don't think walz has any chance against Snyder if he makes it there.

Walz most likely has a 0.0% chance of winning.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Nothing's official yet, but rumor mill is buzzing that Snyder hurt his ribs in his quarterfinal match and may not be able to go in tonight's semis. That means Walz would only have to beat Medberry (a tough draw, but beatable) and then Kasper (who he beat pretty handily in the ACC tourney) to bring home the trophy. His chances suddenly look pretty good.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

walz with a major decision so two all americans thus far with him and haught.

I see some mention of Kyle Snyder hurting his ribs? An injury there could really open the door for Ty, but he needs to get by Medberry first. I'd really like to see a hokie in the final tomorrow night!

Mastriani picks up another win. Staying alive through the consi's.

Friday mornings have traditionally been tough for VT. Last year was a bit of an aberration.

We only placed 1 guy in the semis last year (Walz), so 2 this year is a bit of an improvement.

Where is Lawson?!

I just have to say, as someone who wrestled in high school, it's really cool that there's actually a community of people legitimately excited about VT wrestling and apparently know the sport well.

You should be up here in State College! They love their wrestling up here.

Based on what I can see and only following the championship bracket:

133, 165, 184, 197, 285 - All top 4 advance to semis.

125 lbs - #1 and #4 seeds advance. Dance upset by #10.
141 lbs - Only #1 seed advance.
149 lbs - #1 and 3 seeds advance.
157 lbs - #1, #3, #4 seeds advance.
174 lbs - #1-3 advance. Epperly upset by #5.

31/40 top 4 seeds made it to semis. Out of the 9 top4 seeds that didn't advance, 2 were tech wrestlers (Dance, Epperly). The other schools that had one of their seeds upset were: PSU (Medical forfeit), Ohio State, Iowa, OKST, Princeton, NCST, and Stanford.

For you wrestling guys, is this about normal? Are there more or less upsets than usual?

Mueller of UVA got rocked in the semi's. Dance is lucky to win, scored on only his second shot of the match in OT. It's weird seeing him wrestle so timid. However, Dance is officially locked for All American status, so that's nice.

Also, If he makes it there, Dance will have to wrestle Gilman, the 1 seed, to make into the third place match.

Hope he beats Gillman, more than just a fact that Dance is the Hokie, I listed to Thomas Gillman talk about himself in the third person, as if he were god after he won in the quarterfinals. He sounds like a real assclown.

Fuck Gillman, he made me a hater of Iowa wrestling all in one day.

Gilman seems like a real tool.

Where is Lawson?!

Dance wins 3=1 and is an All American

He took 3 shots..........

Where is Lawson?!

Seth Gross of SDST with a dominating performance. That's how you wrestle to win, I haven't seen anyone on Tech's team so far wrestle like that outside of Walz.

Good match for Chishko, has a good shot at making it to the 3/4 match.

Great match for Mastriani. Epperly did not have a good weekend, wrestled not to lose, and that's why he lost.

Man, what a stressful (and good) end to sal's match. Sal's up 8-7 and starting on top. Opp almost got the escape multiple times and nearly got the reversal to win it.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

There goes Epperly's chance at being VTs first 4x AA

I don't know what is up with some of them this weekend. Epp, Dance, Zavastsky, and a little bit Haught all are wrestling(ed) super timidly, with absolutely no answers on bottom.

Dance advances to the consi semi's to face Gillman. Looked a little better in that match.

Chishko with another thriller, advances to consi semi's to face Sorenson of Iowa.

Mastriani lost, will wrestle for 7/8 tomorrow.

Is the consolation semis tonight or tomorrow morning?

Consi Semi's will be tomorrow starting around 11 am. Championship Schedule I believe the times are in Central, but i'd double check to make sure.

Chisko advances barely
Dance is nothing but defensive as usual.

Where is Lawson?!

Not expecting big things from dance against Gilman tomorrow.

What id Walz do? Tomorrow?

Where is Lawson?!

Haught is up next on the ESPN broadcast and then Walz

Tough loss for Haught, Cox stalled for most of the match, nice to see Haught compete with one of the best in the world.

Welp, another year no individual champions. Walz gassed at the end. At the end of Day 2, Penn state is all but a lock for the team champions. Tech will be fighting to stay in the top 10. Tomorrow will be a big day.

Walz goes down 4-3 in the semis. And just like that, we have no chance to get a trophy.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I hope people will appreciate just how hard it is to win a title in wrestling.

It's Time to go to Work

it's very hard, but it's still disappointing that none of our guys outside of sal and maybe chishko have lived up to their seeds. Haught and walz could still end up in the 3/4 match and do that with good performances.

Dance lost, will go to the 5/6 match.

Chishko lost, will go to 5/6 match.

Walz is through to the third place bout.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Haught and Walz win, will go to 3/4 match.

Dance takes 5th, Mueller forfeited.

Chishko loses again, takes 6th. He had no fire today like he did the first two days.

Mastriani loses, takes 8th. He had a good tournament, good end to his career.

Haught got caught, loses, takes 4th.

Haught just got pinned by a r-frosh. 4th place.

Where is Lawson?!

Put a fork in it Wallz loses 4th place.

Where is Lawson?!

Well that was just all sorts of disappointing.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Walz almost had it in SV, but lost and took 4th. He picked up his opponent and through him down, but could not get control. He used every ounce of energy to do it. He couldn't ride his opponent out of the first 30 sec OT and then couldn't escape when he was on bottom of the second OT. Hard fought match but he was gassed at the end.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Overall a rather disappointing tournament. I think Sal was the only bright spot.

Walz loses, takes 4th. Such a frustrating match to watch. Hall stalled every period besides the first, the refs kind of blew that one. Terrible day overall. Tech lost every medal match (I'm not sure if Dance would have beat Mueller if he had wrestled) and every match besides 2 for the day.

Tech will probably finish 8th overall, even with the guys we sent, that's slightly disappointing. Next year has some potential, the coaching hire will be interesting. We lose Walz, Mastriani, and Dance. We have some talent that redshirted and could make some noise. Rough end to the year, but it was tons of fun to watch!

I agree. Hall did not put any effort into a single good shot on Walz after his first takedown, which Walz for some reason was not paying attention to. I don't know how much of this performance can be "blamed" on Dresser not being there. It definitely would have been a distraction for the team.

Edit: To add to how Babcock says wrestling is the closest sport to winning a championship, I may agree. But wrestling is probably the most difficult to win as well, other than women's basketball. The top 1-3 teams are a step above everyone else every year. We are usually around 4-7 and the talent drop off is immense. To win a championship we have to have multiple individual champions and we can't even get one in the championship round.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Yea, Penn State is pretty young this year, they are poised to be dominate for quite a while.

I don't know how much of this performance can be "blamed" on Dresser not being there. It definitely would have been a distraction for the team.

It didn't seem to be a distraction in the ACC.

Anyway, thanks to all the seniors for being a Hokie. Always a Hokie! Some great exciting times!

Where is Lawson?!

ACC competition is still so much lower and a much smaller crowd under lights nowhere near as bright. And everyone on our team has been on the podium for the ACCs.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

That was a head coach's interview. I hope Robie gets the job.

If anyone else was following, Penn State is ridiculous. 5 individual champions, the national title the past 6 out of 7 years. I don't think they have any seniors either. Just absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah, they're pretty well stacked for the longhaul. That's what a great coach will do for you and its not likely to end until he wants it to end. Tied Iowa for most champions, something they did twice, but still got to get another next year to tie OKST for second longest streak though, and Iowa's 9 would be quite a feat. Crazy that even at 146.5 they were not really that close to IU 170 which is otherworldly.

Overall its hard not to feel a little disappointed overall as I really thought we could compete for a trophy and maybe an individual title, but as Coach Robie said the margin for error is so small and everyone is so good at this level it wasn't unexpected. Overall we placed the highest of any team without an individual champ which was good, but I hope the sentiment he seemed to be pointing towards remains consistent with the program. I think they really need to try and schedule more matches with the BIG10 throughout the season as I think that can help them get ready for the NCAAs as the ACC doesn't have the same quality of wrestling in it. I think PSU outscored our whole conference so that should speak volumes.

Yeah, watching Ty Walz wrestle in the ACC was watching a bear among men. Never any doubt on who is going to walk away the winner. Then he gets to nationals and it's actually a real fight. That third place match, in particular, was neck and neck and could have easily gone his way had the refs actually called stalling.
