It's gonna be an uneventful couple of months. Other than some more offers and spring camps, I don't expect big things.

Wut.

You mean "uneventful", right?

you meant to reply to Beamer's Auto Garage, right?

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I did, in fact, thank you. I guess that's one reason why I seldom post...

Well this thread is off to a roaring start.

This has enhanced it tremendously.

South Carolina LB recruit Dax Hollifield convinced that playing multiple sports helped him on gridiron

Yesterday I read the article linked above about Dax I I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts. Is it better in the long run for a kid to stick to the sport they will play at the next level, or if they should play multiple like Dax here?*

Now...

*I wouldn't normally bring up such a mundane topic in the recruiting thread but it's May we need something to talk about.

sounds like a great topic of conversation...for its own post, not as a sub thread in the recruiting post.

But in all seriousness I can make it it's own post if that's more helpful.

Dax picked up another USCe Crystall Ball today...

I vaguely remember an article one time where Urban Meyer said he only recruited multi-sport athletes.

I think for kids who are developing physically, playing multiple sports probably helps. However, once they are at the D1 or maybe pro level, the benefits of multi-sporting diminish.

247 now has us and South Carolina at 50% for Dax Hollifield.

I really hope we can get this kid. Him with Rivers as our LBs would be nasty.

I'm awaiting word from our local #sauce guys before I get too worried about this one. South Carolina is certainly a legitimate contender. Muschamp, for all his shortcomings, has done an excellent job of recruiting and sending defensive players to the NFL.

His recruiting is gonna take the whole time. USCe has gained ground but when they fall flat on their faces when coaching matters, we shall see. Also this kid "lives" at Tech during the football season. He is a high recruit, let him enjoy the ride.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

South Carolina had zero draft picks this year

He also didn't recruit anyone who was draft eligible at USCe. For comparison look at the defensive players Florida has put in the NFL the last three drafts or so. He didn't get to develop them all the years but he recruited all those guys. Using this past draft from his first year at USCe is a terrible sample to draw a conclusion from.

Friendly PSA:

Dude is gonna play this one out.

Alright so here's a name I don't think we have discussed yet...

Gervin just de-committed from ND two days ago. 247 interviewed him about it in the link below...

http://247sports.com/Article/Kalon-Gervin-goes-in-depth-on-de-commitment...

So, if it's not going to be Notre Dame or Michigan, where will Gervin end up? He's unsure about what's to come in the future, but does have an idea of a few schools he wants to visit.

"I'm probably going to hit up Virginia Tech again," said Gervin. "Florida. Oklahoma. I'm probably going to hit up Michigan State. I don't really know right now. I don't really know where I'm headed right now. There's a bunch of schools. I really don't know where my head's at right now."

The CB list on 247 shows us getting a CB today but on his actual profile it's not showing up. Either way he is definitely another name to keep on eye on. He is listed as an athlete but from what I have seen projects as a corner at the next level.

He looks like he'll be a great player, but his options look a bit wide open.

We just picked up another CB from Andrew Ellis, who is an tOSU person. Pretty high accuracy though.

Yea Gervin seems to be focusing heavily on the good guys, Oklahoma, and Oregon but based on his interviews I think he's pretty open to talking with just about anyone right now. I think it will be a while before we can tell anything with him.

Annnnd since it's the offseason and we're starving for stuff to talk about (ie. shoe contracts and political influence in the fall of ESPN) I thought I would share this too. 247 put out a write up yesterday on the The Opening in Charlotte. Several current names of interest were mentioned...

http://247sports.com/Article/Top-Performers-The-Opening-Charlotte-52665516

ALPHA DOG

Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth five-star defensive end KJ Henry dominated offensive tackles with his elite burst off the line of scrimmage. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound prospect was able to bend around the corner with ease and found himself getting to the quarterback on a regular basis. Henry looked to be one of the top pure pass rushers in the nation's on Sunday. Clemson appears to be in good shape for Henry at this juncture in the recruiting process.

1. DT Rick Sandidge: The Concord (N.C.) product is a mountain of an interior lineman standing 6-foot-5, 280-pounds. The Top247 prospect powered his way past offensive linemen with a very effective rip move. Just went it looked that rip was Sandidge's only move, he threw an offensive guard out of the way with an impressive club. In addition to his strength, Sandidge adds a bit of mobility to make him tough to block in the middle of the line. Sandidge appears to be wide open on his recruitment at this time.
3. DT Dante Stills: The Fairmont (W.V.) product is an ultra-athletic defensive tackle as his 6-foot-4, 265-pound frame continues to fill out. The four-star recruit was quick off the line of scrimmage and knifed his way to the quarterback on a regular basis Sunday. Stills is high on in-state West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Florida.
5. LB Dax Hollifield: The Shelby (N.C.) star was another athletic linebacker that moved extremely well in position drills. He is a powerfully built 6-foot-1, 220-pounds that had a strong performance in the 'cat and mouse' that test linebackers in the open field against running backs. Hollifield looked comfortable in pass coverage as well. North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech sit at the top of Hollifield's recruitment.
— Hopewell (Va.) running back Ronnie Walker had a strong performance catching the ball out of the backfield and making defenders miss in the open field. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound recruit looked explosive doing both.
— North Carolina linebacker commit Payton Wilson is a big, athletic prospect that stands 6-foot-4, 225-pounds. At that height, he has the frame of a defensive end, but Wilson was comfortable chasing smaller running backs in the open field.*

*I know he committed to UNCheat but it's early amiright?

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Here's another perspective on that camp

With this tidbit about one of our commits

I loved Virginia Tech receiver commit Bryce Thompson. He strikes me as a potentially dominant slot receiver, with the route-running ability to shake nickel corners and run for huge chunks of yardage after the catch.

Ok so I've made it clear that I unashamedly enjoy following recruiting. HOWEVER it must be stressed that predicting a recruiting class this far ahead of time is a complete and utter crap shoot. When I glanced at a certain other message board after Ellis' decommittment the other day I saw a few people trying to crunch the numbers to figure out where our class would fall if we were to get the kids we're "predicted" to get today and they were all panicked at the results. If you're currently worried about the state of our 2018 recruiting class I invite you to peruse last year's May recruiting thread...

May 2016 Football Recruiting Thread

Seriously out of the butt ton of names that were mentioned on that thread I saw two that weren't already committed that ended up coming to the good guys (Savoy and Hunter). The overwhelming majority of those names were a complete afterthought by the end of the Fall.

The thing that stood out to me last year was the amount of names that were popping up late in the process and then the names that we thought were long gone that came back up at the end of the cycle (ie. Proctor and Rivers). I know some people will never be happy until we're recruiting like Alabama* every year but I for one am excited to see what Fuente and company will stir up come December and January.

*Also in case you panic about recruiting rankings in May just note that while we are currently sitting at 31st, Alabama is presently at 46th, but I highly doubt they are worried.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

I've said this before in the past, but I'm going to try really, really hard to not follow recruiting this year. I will obviously be excited when we get a big commitment and when the class is in the books in February, but I just can't follow this stuff non-stop all year. I feel like the people who stress about recruiting can't even enjoy the games and great things we do on the field during the season, which is the whole reason they play football and recruit in the first place. It's just this non-stop worry about who the next class will bring in before the current one even walks on campus. I'll leave that to the coaches to handle, but I'm not going to personally put so much emphasis on following it.

You can be excited in December this year, early signing period.

Does offering another ILB mean we aren't too confident in our boy Dax?

RVA Hokie. Class of 2011.

He's a 19 kid. He's also going to be a beast and is a teammate of Joe Kane.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

I think this is my favorite ILB tape of any kid I've seen. This dude absolutely rockets to the ball and lays monster hits. Absolute force

Definitely. Fun to watch. Would be cool seeing him bolting around the field.

I have had this same thought process on any positional offering as of late. On one shoulder, I tell myself its still early and Spring Evals took place. On another, I wonder if we aren't landing the top talent. Time will tell, but an offer simply means were interested and now we have to see how hard we want to pursue them or not.

My take is a little different.

Frank really limited who he offered, putting all of his eggs in very few baskets. First and foremost, he wanted kids from Virginia. So Plan A might be just a couple of guys for a particular position; and later offers often indicated failure.

I don't think Fu understands the concept of a basket and will offer anyone he finds, whenever and wherever, that can make the team better. Kids from Virginia would be great, but so would good players from anywhere else. IMO, it also creates leverage with recruits seriously considering VT and I like that.

I expect more offers in the summer and the fall until kids are signed on the dotted line. I've pretty much stopped considering anything other than the film when gauging a recruit.

So I know it's been pretty clear for a while that Teradja Mitchell is an FSU lean and that he's definitely looking to go out of state but I just saw today that he has narrowed down his decision to FSU and OSU...

http://247sports.com/Article/5-star-LB-Teradja-Mitchell-talks-final-two-...

It is a two team race for Mitchell.

"Definitely Florida State and Ohio State...It's like neck and neck. So I'm just going to go with my gut at tend, talk to God about it, and see what school is best for me."

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Well, if he talks to God, then he'll clearly come to VT since....

Darryle Simmons WR 6-2 210 high 3* is announcing his commitment on Mother's day. Evan Watkins 247 sports just crystal balled him to VT.

Holy out of nowhere Batman. I remember hearing this kid's name a little while back but I didn't think we were in real serious contention for him. A big bodied receiver with some big boy offers. Yes please.

For reference...

That QB is pretty good too, some nice passes getting dropped in.

He also does a much better job catching with his hands instead of his body.

Just saw that we now have a 3-1 CB lead on 247 over PSU. It was 2-1 in PSUs favor 24 hours ago...I like that movement.

Its good to see a lot of guys we had highlighted as talent with high 3s or low 4s are now solid 4's. Still, Walker, McNeil, Pitts, etc

It's been a slow work day so I thought I would share some thoughts on some recent offers that have gone out.

The first one is for 2018 RB Andrew Cunningham out of FL. He is somehow only rated as a low-mid 3*, but he has 50+ offers. Watching his tape is pretty entertaining; he doesn't get tacked until 3 and a half minutes into it, so you think, ok, he must have shown all his touchdowns, but nope, after a couple tackles he's right back to scoring TDs again. He looks like a beast, but a FL kid with 50 offers, I'm not super hopeful we land him.

Another offer that piqued my interest is for 2018 WR Tykee Ogle-Kellogg out of TN. Besides the awesome name he is a 6'5" receiver who actually plays like he's 6'5". It looks like their favorite passing play to run is the ole "Tykee go long and we'll throw it up to ya" play. He looks like a heavy lean to Tenn but the latest prediction is foggy from a UT insider, so maybe that's not a done deal.

We finally offered 2018 DE Eli Adams out of SC. Somehow he is only rated a low-mid 3* but watching his tape is a lot of fun, he is one of my favorite d-linemen. He plays mean and what does Beamer say..."He'll get after ya"? He currently has 2 CBs to NC State, but he visited VT back in March so I'm hoping we can pick him up. I think a future D-line with him and Alim McNeil would be pretty disruptive.

Lastly, we recently offered 2019 TE Larry Hodges out of FL and he described us as his "dream school". At 6'1" 200 he's not your typical TE frame, but what stood out in his film is it seems like he can do a little bit of everything. He lined up all over the place and even threw a completion on a trick play. He reminded me a little of Sam Rogers, so I wonder if Fuente has his eye on him as the next H-back. He's also teammates with Kendrick Torain, a 2018 3* CB that we also recently offered.

Would be funny to only have Hodges's play TE forevermore

Just notice Tre Turner's 247 CB trending to our favor today, he can be one of the top recruits for us this year. #NCtoVT

Small update on the James Mitchell front.

Had a general conversation with his father and others today. Mitchell has been recently upgraded to a 4 on some sites. Mostly due to his participation in several football camps. His father did state he is a solid 230lbs now, which is up from 210ish as a junior. It was also relayed that James would narrow the list (which is growing) down to 5 sometime in August. He wants to play basketball and will not announce early or enroll early.

Offers are piling up. UGA offered over last few days and his father spoke highly of Shane Beamer. Coincidentally, Shane is TE coach if anyone forgot. I did. Schools (anOSU, Duke, others) are sending coaches to his track meets at this point.

My opinion: I was heavy leaning towards VT before today. Duke is chomping at the bit and Mitchell is attracted to the educational value there. He has a family member in school in Athens, GA. I could see him going south to Clemson, UGA, even Duke over VT right now. Not feeling him staying in state at this moment.

Nitpicking the graphic here but I hate that we use the digicamo on our social media pieces as we just announced we are staying away from them.
