*UPDATE*
Terrell Edmunds getting season ending shoulder surgery and is done for the year
mook been playing with a torn hip. likely to get surgery as well and be done for the season. **EDIT** update on mooks hip. hes going to play till he cant anymore or they shut him down. the surgery is inevitable just not sure of the timing right now, hes been dealing with it for a while and is going to keep grinding it out for now. He was at practice today as a participant.

Dear God.

Well, none of that is good.

They don't practice until tonight. He looked fine at the women's basketball game last night.

If something happened during lifting, sure. But it wasn't at practice. That hasn't happened yet.

edited. I don't have allot of info right now. I just know its not good. I text him but haven't heard back yet. ill update as soon as I get more info.

Jreynolds06 told me that Mook's hip had been bothering him all season, but has been able to play through it. If he has been able to play with it, without it getting worse, than hopefully it is a simple procedure, maintenance type of thing, and he will be back to 100% quickly. Hopefully he can finish the season though.

As for Edmunds, I hope everything is alright and that it is not too serious. Your post seems awfully ominous.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Hello basketball season

This is probably the worst thing I have ever posted since I've been a member on this site, but UVA has to be licking their chops...
*dry heaves*

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

On the bright side this gives Hunter valuable in game experience at safety and Watts or Rodgers or Ladler at the nickel

I was already worried about that game as it was. UVA will be favored if Terrell and Mook are out for the year.

Doubt that. Its not like we will play with 9 on defense.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

Doubtful. Mook and Terrell are solid players but are also some major reasons we have lost the past two weeks on big plays and busted coverages. Hunter will get some more game experience and Deon Newsome is a solid backup to Mook along with Shegog rotating in.

I would also imagine that if your hip was bothering you enough that you would need surgery, stopping suddenly in plays or trying to get a few extra inches on a leaping tackle would be difficult, which would possibly explain the bad tackling against Miami and not stopping on the late hit against the bees.

Is it football season yet?

I would agree that the season is almost a throwaway at this point, BUUUUUTTTTTT there is still the UVA streak. I bought tickets this year, please god don't let it end this year!

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

I'm fine with using Pitt as a scrimmage if it means keeping the streak. I've said it before, item #1 on CJF's job description should be...

This season is no where near a throwaway. We're out of the coastal race, yes, but we're still playing for 10 wins, a decent bowl bid, and the UVA streak. Beyond that, our offense needs as many reps as possible.

I don't think it is either. I was just emphasizing how badly I want us to beat LOLUVA.

im not 100% on when mook will have surgery just was told hes been playing with a torn hip (whatever that means) for a while and getting surgery on it. sounded like it was going to be sooner rather than later but trying to get some more solid info as to time table. hes been playing on it so hopefully can finish out the season. just didn't sound like that was the plan.

I have a partially torn hip labrum now (if you follow the NBA, it's the same injury that has kept Isaiah Thomas out). It sucks at times, but I can still live my life.

Of course, I'm not a D-1 football player either, so it's more imperative that Mook get it fixed.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

It sucks, but we have enough talent in those spots that we should still be able to beat Pitt and UVA. As we saw on Saturday Shegog is no joke, and at safety between Hunter, Floyd, and Ladler we should still be able to go 9-3. Its certainly going to make the bowl game rough though. Losing Deablo, Alexander, Mook, and Rell for the year is a lot of back end attrition.

Yeah, that's a lot of backfill.

Then there's Nijman, who we all know is a critical player at this point. Need him back like yesterday.

Alexander is out for the year? With a hammy? I thought Hilgart was the Saban of strength coaches?

I know. Everybody knows strong hammies equals impervious to injury.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Obviously we should be doing more leg curls.

Ugh, I ripped my hammie badly doing leg curls while at Tech in the late 70's. And, I still feel it today...40 years later.

Maybe..but stretching them and proper hydration help with a strained hammy not being a 6 week injury- typically.

A few injuries happen to every team every season. Strength and conditioning can only do too much. If you an example of a team with an actual strength and conditioning problem, look at the Washington Redskins.

Shit..with those two out- now we might give up uncontested 80 yard touchdown passes twice to Pitt...

Wow, you're really stuck on that aren't you.

Edit: I refrained from commenting on your post yesterday but I'll just say it now. That's exactly how GT's O works. You know the stat cause you posted it a million times. They run the ball 95% of the time a good DC would rather stop 95% of their plays and make them complete a long pass. GT is one of the tops teams in YPC and 36th in YPA. They just run the triple option all day then hope that they can catch a defense off guard and heave one down field, they're decent at it to say the least.

or worse if it is to LOLUVA

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

LOLUVA actually has a guy who can throw the ball. Would be disastrous to leave a receiver open.

I'm sure Bud will go over this, not that he probably needs to at this point.

Well if Benkert goes 38-42 for 465 and 3 touchdowns in the Air, I am most certainly blaming the VT offense.

Benkert isn't going 38-42 against a Bud Foster defense, or any defense for that matter.

But every once in a while he does throw a perfect pass if you give him enough time.

Trust in Bud. He knows what he's doing.

Agreed. Only 2 times this year has the other team completed more than half their passes. Mountain Jesus and Kelly Bryant.

Benkert is neither, and neither is whoever Pitt puts out on the field Saturday.

okay this one was actually funny.

Chem PhD '16

oh for fuck sake, read this thread.... it's a joke/sarcasm..- and this was not a "somber" sorry they are injured type thread- plenty of snark in it already. jesus christ - I would love for this board be successful..and not be 6 of the same posters that TSL became because of over-moderation and "thought policing" like your post- that is why TSL traffic is down 40%

Is it me? Your posts/comments are constantly in the negatives....

It's not you, he's just a debbie downer.

Chem PhD '16

You can say all kinds of snarky things and be as critical as you like, but adding insult to injury (literally) is crossing the line.

Where did I mock or speak on their injuries? Where?

I suspect you're trolling at this point, but sure...
This is a thread about injuries, you spoke facetiously about them being out which is obviously due to their injuries.
Then you sarcastically ask who is going to give up long pass plays, chiding players for having a bad game.

I did not relish in any injury- sorry, not even close.

I didn't say you did, I said you used the injury as an opportunity to remind us they played poorly (by your estimation) last game. You saw a discussion about an injury then joked at their expense. That's in poor taste, and sometimes you get called out on it.

I made a sarcastic post- I did not do anything at any kids "expense". I didn't name names, I didn't say it was all their fault for giving up long passes, not one word about their injuries. not one. It's sarcasm based on how we- the team lost the last game.. thats all it is.. If that is "poor taste" than 80% of the posts on this board is poor taste.

I'm just trying to tell you why people responded the way they did. You can't honestly say you didn't mention the injury, when you responded to a thread about the injury. That's literally mind boggling, but I'll be generous and take your word that you believe you aren't doing it at anyone's expense (you are though, just for the record). And it probably would have been fine if you weren't putting negativity out in multiple threads or if this was a game thread. But in an injury thread, and given your recent posting history, it rubbed people the wrong way. Time and place for those things.

This is amazing. Was he insulting Bud? Hilgart? Someone else? What did I miss?

I must be missing something too and I've read through the entire thread. I haven't seen any insults regarding a player, any mention of religion, or any mention of politics. You don't have to agree with everyone's opinion. If a member wants to make comments about how our LB play isn't good (whether or not it actually is), then that's his prerogative. If a member wants to point out the number of yards we gave up, believes an opponent is one-dimensional, or thinks a few injuries will hamper our season, he's entitled to do so. It's been a tough two weeks to be a Hokie; let's all hug it out and crack a beer (after work).

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Thank You.. good post- you understand sarcasm

Where does GT rank in completions or attempts per game?- without looking it up, I will guess over 120. If you throw 6 total passes, and hit on 1 for 60 yards- your YPC is going to look pretty darn good- does that make you an effective passing team? They are 128 out of 129 in yards per game passing.

Wow yes oh boy let's reshash this again so excited /s

YES IT DOES MAKE YOU AN EFFICIENT PASSING TEAM BECAUSE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RATE STATS AND EFFICIENCY STATS

Chem PhD '16

I don't think that's how it's calculated. I don't believe GT would be in the top 50 with ~134 rating.

YPA, YPC TD-INT ratio, TD% etc all have GT as middle of the pack at worst . When they decide to throw the ball, it is effective and efficient. The only efficiency stat that where GT fails is Comp%... but if you can only hit 40% of your throws and still average 8.5 YPA, you're still being pretty effective in the passing game.

The single biggest shift in sports analysis over the last decade or so is the understanding of rate and efficiency.

Chem PhD '16

Agree. In the Fuente era..we are really "efficient" with the QB pop pass to Sam Rogers and Keene. We've run it 4 times, but hey.

But hey what? it's perfectly valid to say that it is both an efficient and effective play. Anyone expecting the offense to be 100% pop passes over the middle to our H Back is ridiculous, and anyone who says that play is "among the worst we run" because it has generated fewer yards for us over the last two years than QB keepers or back shoulder fades to Isaiah Ford is equally ridiculous.

Chem PhD '16

The hey what is ruthlessly defending the VT "passing game" by that one efficiency stat. VT is NOT good running the ball this year for example - Fuente will tell you that.. but I could probably find an advanced stat somewhere that paints a decent picture for the running game

By Passing S&P+ (an efficiency minded advanced stat) GT is usually very good every year. They were 5th in 2014 and 10th in 2016. 2015 they were bad but the team was god awful that year. This year they are 32nd in passing. GT won't rack up stats but they pass effectively more than most of the country.

You would think they would pass more, being so good at it.

Or is it effective because of the scheme? It's tomato-tomahto. Efficiency generally decreases with volume (regression to the mean blah blah blah), but sample size only speaks to likely sustainability of the result, not the actual efficiency.

Chem PhD '16

Georgia Tech is likely to finish this year at 7-5.. They are 3rd in the country rushing the football and 22nd overall in total defense. No, those are not "advanced" stats, but they clearly show you they are not a "good" passing team. That is unless you think special teams hidden yardage has that much affect on W/Ls

Which may well explain why the defense was prioritizing the run.

Just because they aren't "good" by raw numbers doesn't mean they're not effective when they choose to pass. If you and I are in a boxing match, and I throw one punch per round and miss on the first six, but then knock you clean out in the seventh, can you really say that it's not effective?

Chem PhD '16

I agree with you there. They are 7-5 - almost every year- I "think" that Johnson wants to do better than that. If his passing game was some effective advanced stat beast, you would think he would use it/rep it more. But as it stands, being the only 3-o team in the P5, he can chuck up a lucky 50 yard play to 6'06 Juene every once in a while, because teams don't see his offense but once a year. I don't think he has had a QB he recruited throw for over 50% completions- if I am not mistaken. So yeah, are they advanced stat efficient with the pass? sure? is the overall passing offense effective in terms of wins/losses? I don't think so. Are the QBs "good" passers? not really. For those reasons, calling them anything positive overall in the pass game is a stretch for me. This is my last post on this dead horse- promise.

They're "effective" at it, only because their run-based scheme forces defenses to key on the run first, foremost, and almost always. If they were to pass more, they would lose that effectiveness, because defenses would be able to focus less on the run.

C'mon, bud. You grok this.

No electrons were harmed in the making of this comment or post. However, billions of electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

Oh my gosh as if your own paragraph long thread wasn't enough you're hijacking this one too.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

It doesn't matter how many you complete if they all go for 6. That's textbook efficiency. 2 for 12 isnt that bad if those 2 get TDs, especially if your offense isn't dependent on the passing game, whereas 20 of 30 with no TDs is.

Two efficiency stats for a team that passes 6 times a game does not invalidate the 6 other major passing stats where they are bottom five in the country. I get it- they don't throw a lot, they hit on a few deep- OF COURSE ypc is going to be higher than ECU- a much better passing team by EVERY other measure.

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

I don't have a problem with this comment. We can all feel (and do feel) sorry for them, but we can feel sorry for them and talk football at the same time. This is actually a good point regarding the recent performance of Edmunds and Mook. If everyone is honest with themselves, their first two thoughts when hearing about an injury are 1) oh that is terrible, I hope he is able to get back to 100% and it doesn't derail his career and 2) that is going to hurt the team, who is the backup, what are we going to do? And those two thoughts happen almost simultaneously. The comments in this thread are proof of that. That doesn't make anyone a bad person, just a fan (which is short for fanatic). It is okay to be a fanatic, it is why college football is such a big deal in the US and why we are all here commenting. Just have to find the right balance, not get too carried away, and remember that these are real people, student athletes, but that is not going to stop me from being a fanatic. It is why our Hokie Nation is such a great fan base.

Don't feel like you have to go on and on defending yourself though. People will down vote, but just let them, make one or two comments defending your position and then move on.

Let's go 1-0 against Pitt this week. Hopefully that is the teams focus right now. Let it also be our focus.

Another thought I had almost immediately was that it totally explains Mook's struggles the last few games. If he's been playing with a bad hip, that absolutely would limit him in coverage and tackling form.

I heard he was playing on bad hip a couple days before the UNC game.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Don't understand the down votes again. This comment does not seem to violate the rules. We know we have a big play problem and it isn't getting better with injured or lost starters.

I didn't downvote, but I suspect the issue was the comments were posted in a thread about injuries. Folks get sensitive about injuries -- rightly so. The same comments in the game thread wouldn't have provoked the same response.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

My apologies if you thought I was singling you out. It was just a general comment.

His comment in a vacuum is ok I guess. In context of him berating our safeties for allowing big plays when put on an island insinuates that the injuries don't matter. That they would give up big plays anyways. That's how I read it and I got sucked in. First blurry post when I sunk to his level. Sad times.

He didn't do anything against the rules. To be fair, you were the only one violating them:

Bright side time:

could be more time for Newsome and Shegog.... a proper send off for two seniors who stuck with it through irregular playing time.

Maybe some Hunter and/or Ladler, it would be good to see how that goes.

And likely means Terrell returns next year (and maybe his "package deal" brother).

Excellent point.

Newsome and Shegog are both good players who have been underutilized. Looks like that's about to change.

Newsome and Shegog are also native Virginians, glad to have them on the field at Lane Stadium North.

Shegog is a good player- just not as quick/shifty as Mook covering receivers. Guessing Foster blitzes a little more with Mook out. I also heard- not confirmed- that Hunter has had some nagging injuries too, but I am very excited to see him in real game action, although I think long term he is more a rover than free safety.

I mentioned this during the game, but back in the 4-4 days, Shegog would have been an amazing Whip.

Yep, a better Brandon Semones.

I think Ben Taylor played Whip in a similar mode on the 1999 (?) team before he moved to Backer.

Cory Bird was in the middle of those two and was more like Mook. Bird was great on the blitz.

I feel almost dirty for saying this, but my first thought when I read your statement about Hunter's "nagging injuries" was relief. I hadn't seen him in games very much as of late, and I was remembering that he'd had a concussion earlier in the season (I think). Concussions would scare me much more than a nagging injury.

I'd be surprised if Ladler isn't the guy at safety. I don't think you'll see Hunter playing the free safety position much if at all. Plus Ladler has looked very physical when he has gotten his time on the field. Excited to see how he progresses.

I tell you, when the ACC got together a few years back and set the new "injury media policy" it really sucks for the fans now. The league wants all injuries reported consistently- read- not at all- until something official goes on the injury report. Beamer went from nearly giving every medical detail to not saying a peep about injuries overnight. Stinks that fans have to wait until game time to see if someone is truly out.

I actually feel the exact opposite. I think it's kind of wrong that this info is publicized at all. Mainly because in any other profession you wouldn't have to release this kind of medical info.

Anything made by EA or a subsidiary of EA

There was huge backlash to Star Wars Battlefront II. This comes as a surprise to no one who has played Star Wars Battlefront (the recent release, not the gem of the original), but EA locked Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker as characters that you could earn in game tokens to unlock.

Reddit then crunched the numbers and showed you could play something like 40 hours of play or spend $80 to unlock them. Oh and that is for one of the two main characters, not both. It then came out that there is a cap to the number of tokens you can earn. This hit the "pay-to-win" alarm and the flames were fanned when this happened.

Well be fine, our D line will have to step up and make sure the opposing QB doesn't have time to throw.

Edited to fix autocorrect.

yea sorry hen the info I got when I got it was very limited "rells hurt and done for the season going into surgery now" I didn't realize it wasn't from something that just happened I just kind of assumed, because I would think that they've known about this for a while and it seemed like an odd time to decide to get surgery one it. I know he's been battling the shoulder issues all year. we know what assuming does, my bad.

You've got nothing to apologize for.

He had been wearing a brace on that shoulder all year, even as far back as pre-season practices. Shoulders are tricky, and if you're borderline injured, something as simple as sleeping on it funny or a hard sneeze can be the difference between playing hurt and getting surgery.

I'll tell you one thing never underestimate a hard sneeze, the older I get the more they start to take me down.

There was a girl that I went to high school with who found out she had a really large brain tumor because she sneezed really hard and it practically sent her into a coma in the middle of class.

She had surgery/chemo/etc and has since fully recovered, but I've always been oddly nervous whenever I feel a big sneeze coming on.

Saw the dreaded wrapped-up shoulder (side note, Teller has had one too) on Terrell the last few weeks. Less than ideal, to be sure.

In the long run, this is probably good news. We're not going to the playoffs, we're not going to the ACC Championship, we're already bowl eligible. The only two things left to play for are getting to 10 wins, and beating LOLUVA.

Might as well go ahead and get a jump on recovery, rather than waiting until January.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I mean injuries are never good news but I get your point

Right, not good news that he's injured, but good news that they are addressing it now, rather than January

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Bitter is reporting that Mook practiced as scheduled today

Fuck this whining.

It's DBU. We got this. Hunter/Rogers at the Free, Floyd Roving, Brandon and Stro manning the corners, and Shegog/Newsome playing Tweedy it's Whip.

Can't wait to see the young dudes. Really excited for Shegog. He's going to light some dudes up, and he's very, very serviceable in coverage.

Leonard. Duh.

Well back to the second part of this thread. How is Mook doing?

mook will continue to play with a torn in his hip until he cant anymore of they shut him down. I want mook playing but I want a health Mook playing too. its best for him and us if hes a full go. don't want to see him hurt anymore than he already is. ill update the post.

also on the injury front has anyone heard if Adonis and trevon hill are doing? went out against GT with what looked like a hammy injury and Adonis was out after MIA game with a hammy.

Based on this past weekend, I'd rather have a healthy Hunter and Newsome starting than an injured Mook and Edmunds. I have full faith in those 2 to play very well over the next couple weeks, especially closing out with 2 home games.

I'm gonna go ahead and give you the BOD and assume you were making a "Lane North" joke. (UVa game is at their place)

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Was it not obvious?

What did I miss about Alexander being hurt and out for the season? Im on here almost all day so not sure how I could have.

At this point, maybe it's time to shut down Mook for the year as well. We're not playing for a Coastal championship anymore, we're not going to an NY6 game, and I'm sure playing on a broken hip won't do Mook any favors.

As for Edmunds, the shoulder brace that he has been wearing since the beginning of the season worried me. Trevon Hill and Vinny Mihota wore the same ones last season when their shoulders were banged up. Glad he's dealing with the injury now rather than later because shoulders are nothing to risk.

Safe to assume Edmunds declares, right? I hope he recovers in time for the Combine. Pure speculation, but might be why they made the decision to do it now so that he can be 100% again by then.

Initial #sauce from a friend is that both of the Edmunds brothers are coming back.

This.
Mom & Dad are firmly in favor of them both staying in college next season.

Ah, late night posting, mixed up which one of them has had more NFL hype this season. Would love to see them both back next year.

By looking ahead I'm not trying to insinuate that this year is a wash, but if all the underclassman on D come back our D could be pretty scary.

-I don't see anyone on the line leaving, which would be big because we still need to create depth at DT.

-From LB I've heard in a few places that Terrell is leaning towards staying, and with the up and down year he's had I think that would make sense. So we lose Motu, which is a big position but the way we have been recruiting LB recently I'm hopeful that we can find a suitable replacement, if not even an upgrade.

-In the secondary I'm hopeful that with his up and down year and with injuries and off-field issues Adonis would stay another year to raise his draft stock, and again hearing that Edmunds would come back after his injury. So we lose Facyson and Stroman. So going into next year I think finding another corner opposite of Adonis is the biggest question mark.

I know it's usually pointless to try and project things like this so far out, but our defense possibly only losing Motu, Stro, and Facyson while getting back DD bodes well for next year.
