Jeremy Webb is loving his VT visit so far

Keep calm, Gobble on

I obviously haven't talked to him at ally, but I'm
Also enjoying his time on capus. First time back since my wedding last year!

After watching today's game, I hope we bring webb in . If Adonis decides to declare for the nfl, we are rally thin at cb.

I doubt Adonis leaves, he hasn't been on the field enough this year.

Pour some Beer on it

Yea, I agree that the smart move is for him to come back next year, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he declares. Sometimes guys see the dollar signs and get roped in.

Also, sober me does not remember posting this last night.. thanks Tots.

You spell much better when you're sober.... definitely a tell next time you post. :--)

I doubt Adonis leaves because he isn't remotely ready.

But Evans, something, something...

Isn't remotely ready

You would think he is absolute garbage saying things like this, which is nowhere near the truth. I agree he could grow from coming back for a year, like most players, but he has all the physical tools right now. He can refine his technique and such but it is a very different situation from Evans trying to make the jump to NFL QB.

Character actually means a lot in the NFL now. Two suspensions in two years is not going to look good to teams and he will likely drop because of that.

He needs to come back for another year, show some maturity, and dominate.

This is nowhere near the truth. I didn't say he absolutely garbage. He's a solid college CB who has played little this year - and not a ton of college football at CB.

But he's also simply not ready as a CB for the NFL - regardless of his physical skills. There's a reason he's been targeted quite a bit this year when he's been on the field.

Paging BAG or LAHokie; any info about Elijah Davis? As a 2018 RB I doubt he gets a scholarship offer but I often see VT coaches retweeting his tweets (is that how you say it?). Is he a PWO candidate? His tape is pretty fun to watch but I couldn't find him on 247.

I often see VT coaches retweeting his tweets him

This is how I've heard it said.

Dude is getting some love. His dominance in the playoffs against bigger talents has raised some eyebrows. I wouldnt be shocked if he is in orange and maroon but hopefully his grades checkout.

RB Anthony Grant has loved his visit as well as OL Riley Simmonds

We are in the pole position for Grant and Webb

I'll believe it when I see it with Grant.

Would taking 3 rb's this year hurt our chances with Ford next year? It seems like taking another OL, DB or DL would make sense.

Heard Salahuddin may visit.

Keep calm, Gobble on

That's a crazy offer list. He just got back from USCw, so if he's taking visits, it must have not gone well.

Jordan McFadden visited Clemson this weekend. Hope we can hold on to him.

I don't think we will, my hope is the fans keep it civil with him on social media.

I just saw that Sis and Watkins on 247 just put CBs in for Clemson....not good.

Id like for him to stop dragging this out and execute. He is moving on, we've moved on.

This has literally been the expected result for a couple months now. Not worth getting upset over, its what the team has prepped for.

yet the crazies will still come out of the wood work to over react and crush him for going to his dream school. Good for him, getting a chance to do what HE wants to do.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I think he's gone. Question: Is this situation kinda like the one where a player from Virginia wanted to go to Tech but we never offered until later and he was already committed to Clemson and still stayed with Clemson after we offered late? I cant remember his name.

i know who you're talking about but there is more to the story. We offered late then got pissy with the kid when he didnt come. Wasn't the current staff but that DAWG was barking up the wrong tree on this one and really made us look bad.

I don't use twitter or other social networking to post goofy shit that nobody cares about. With that said. My personal opinion (that nobody cares about) is that if VT recruited you and you didn't come to VT you may be cool Sunday thru Friday but come Saturday, you are my enemy. I will treat you like my enemy and I wont be happy till I'm tap dancing on your forehead and playing checkers with your teeth. Don't cross me kid....... /s........ sorta

Anyone have any hints if we are starting to move up from our 3rd position with Rasheed Walker. Based on some of the OT recruiting news and trends for OSU and PSU, seems we could be in a good spot?

Somewhat related, Culver got a OSU offer and a crystal ball that way today.

They are slowly reeling him in knowing he was hooked from the initial Clem offer. Done deal.

I gave the story a 1 star rating so hopefully that helps us.

I believe NC State has been courting him pretty hard.

The ones you put your pants on?

The ones on either side of the turkey?

The 'fake internet points' ones?

TKP breathless with anticipation.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

NC State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech. I believe the VT coaches are in-home with him this week. I think he stays close to home, which puts NC State in the drivers seat, but I wouldn't count out VT - although it'd be a very long shot.

UNC is no longer in consideration, which is the best outcome.

Also gonna visit Ohio State

Do transfers count towards recruiting numbers? Maybe we should go heavy in the transfer market after all these coaching changes

I'm not sure if they count towards recruiting numbers but there are only so many scholarships available.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

You can only go so heavy in the transfer market - they do have to sit out at least one year. And frankly not that many guys ultimately end up transferring in these situations and those that do aren't usually real commodities.

I saw some pics on Twitter last night of the coaches making visits

Fuente, Foster, and co (prob 5-6 coaches) were visiting with Crossen. I think hey were also going to visit Dax. Corn and another coach were visiting with Ellis.

Looks like Dillon Spalding committed to West Virginia yesterday

I know the guys with #sauces said a while ago that we weren't going after him any longer...I always hoped they were wrong. Wish him the best of luck (unless he plays the Hokies some day).

He seemed like he wanted to go out of state. Maybe coaches respected his wishes to not be recruited anymore.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I kinda felt like we recruited over him with Ellis, Turner, Simmons and .....later.....Graham. That's four WR types, I wasn't sure Spalding was a better player than any of those guys.

Caaaan't resist...

Spaulding, Lacy Underall, and Judge Smails.

No love for Dr. Beeper?

:(

He was my fave WR that we didn't recruit.

I said it in the coaching thread and I'll say it here. The fact that I haven't heard any recruiting damage from the coaching carousel is weird. We should be looking to poach any targets that initially got away and are now uncertain.

Are there any big targets that we were close on that went to any off the teams in that mess? Which school losing its coach would help us the most? Fedora taking another job?

Just because we haven't heard anything doesn't mean our staff doesn't have their eyes on the coaching dumpster fire that's happening right now. I've been fairly impressed by their job the past two recruiting classes, coupled with two successful seasons on the field, so i'm sure they've been proactive behind the scenes.

I wouldn't be surprised if we nabbed a flip or a transfer once the dust settles in the next couple weeks. I say this with absolutely no #sauces or inside info, other than what I read on this thread.

2019 QB Jalon Jones decommitted from Miss St. I want to say we were in his top 3 before he committed. So that could open up, but with a line of JJ, Hooker, and Patterson I would imagine it would be hard to get another quality QB to commit for the 2019 class.

One name that I was hoping to hear more from was TE Kyle Pitts who committed to Florida. I think the class all said they were sticking together and I think his dad had said that Kyle was sticking with UF, but I was hoping that would open up. Not getting Pitts I think makes James Mitchell that much more important to our class.

I haven't heard it mentioned on here yet but Cam Goode nabbed an invite to the UA All-American game. I can't help but to think this kid would be more highly ranked if he was a few inches taller.

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Count me as really excited about this kid! High energy, "quick twitch", and his size (height) may actually help him disrupt plays.

Edit: The one thing that sticks out when you watch his film is that he utilizes a number of different techniques to get by the blocker. He swims, dip and rips, he has a little halt step, and he spins (here's looking at you Dwight Freeny). He's a crafty guy.

Is it football season yet?

Great twitter handle as well.

Of course he would be rated higher if he was taller. That would make him a better prospect. The ceiling of an almost 6' quick DT is inherently lower than a 6'2" quick DT.

I think Goode will have a nice productive woody barron career

Thing about being shorter is that it can help with leverage. Look at what Aaron Donald did at Pitt and does for the Rams week in and week out. He's listed at 6'0" and absolutely lives in the backfield from the interior.

Chem PhD '16

Sure in that case. But Donald is a freak. Its like saying 6'6" is a good height for a reciever because Calvin Johnson was a beast. On average barely 6' isn't a great DT height. Elite recruits are big and quick. Like Tim.

Don't get me wrong, I think Goode could tear it up for us, but when your frame can only get so big, it's easy to see why the rating isn't that high.

I agree with you that height matters, but a twitchy, explosive player can learn to use his height disadvantage in other ways. Not saying that every short DT is gonna be Aaron Donald -- simply that height alone isn't the end-all-be-all indicator of future success.

Chem PhD '16

Speaking of rankings....

Quincy Patterson is still a 3* player, ranked 405 in the nation and the 17th best Dual Threat QB in the nation, according to 247.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Does anyone know when 247, Rivals, ESPN, etc update their rankings? Fully expect QP to be rated higher after that, esp with his Elite 11 showing.

sounds perfect. Can't wait for all the commentators to constantly repeat "Can you believe this kid was only a 3* out of HS? Fuente really is a QB whisperer!"

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

His tape isn't all that impressive from this season to be completely honest. He got a lot of Elite 11 hype, but that's a controlled scenario and not against live defenses. QP is a project (and always be wary of how pre-produced shows are presented). We have to treat him as such and not anoint him savior so soon. He's got a long, long, long, long way to go before he's taking snaps under/behind center in Lane.

Always choose joy.

Good that will allow JJ and/or Hooker to win a national championship first before QP starts as a R-SO to continue our reign

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Yup. I don't think Qunicy will start until his RS Sophomore/Junior year. I think that will give him plenty of time to really go after that engineering degree and also learn how to be a true QB. He has all the intangibles but he is raw and doesn't play great competition. I'm excited about him but not expecting him to be ready any time soon.

Good news!

Touchdown Tech!!

Awesome!! Quick question, what position do you think he will play at tech? QB is way to crowded for him to have a shot right?

He is being recruited as an ATH and likely WR by VT and almost everyone else.

He committed to VT initially when he was trying to play QB in college. We were pretty upfront that he would get a shot at QB but was unlikely to stick there, just being honest with him. He 'relisted' as an ATH and re-opened his recruitment... only to re-commit to VT after a few days.

Between him and Beck, we could have one of the fastest offenses in the country in the next couple seasons. Could you imagine running Ellis wide on a go route on one side of the field, while at the same time running Beck on a wheel route on the other, while you have Hazleton running a midrange crossing pattern with Farley?

lol, good luck, ACC

Ahh make sense, thanks!

Devyn Ford just got a CB to the good guys

Haven't been following this class that closely, so I hadn't heard much about him... decided to take a look at his profile, expecting the middling 3* late comer we usually get and....

Holy crap! Yes, please!

You haven't heard of Ford? He is third in the line of, well we didn't get Laborn but it's ok we'll get Slade. Then ok we didn't get Slade, but we'll get Ford.

I've been avoiding the recruiting threads this season. Makes things far less complicated

When the 247 Crystal Balls start bouncing towards VT, it means the recruit is 100% a lock to go to FSU, duh.

See: MJ Walker

Ford would be a huge get, but we still need to give him a solid OL to run behind.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck, don't ever come on my show and talk about your football." - Colin Cowherd

This scheme is all about giving guys a chance one-on-one. Our running backs have had that chance repeatedly this year and only sometimes make the play (like Holston's spin move against Pitt). An elite talent like Ford will make those plays more often. I agree the OL is important, but if we see a similar performance to this year's group with Ford taking handoffs, then I would not be too worried.

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

Oh I definitely agree that Ford is more likely to find space as a runner. OL has been suspect with running blocking all year. Although to their credit, our backs have missed a lot of holes that I think Ford hits.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck, don't ever come on my show and talk about your football." - Colin Cowherd

The state of affairs with VT's current RB's is that we actually remember the one time a back broke a tackle.

Ask UGA if they remember that time a RB broke a tackle.

They'd be like, "that last play, Swift/Chubb/Michele/Herron broke 4 tackles."

Yep. Everybody points to the Oline but there have been a lot of yards left on the field. Holston looks to show some promise. Peoples can get tough yards but not likely to break the back of the defense. Trevon can bust the big one but struggles to make the one guy miss to get there. McClease looks good at times. If we could combine the strengths of all the current running backs we would have one good one.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

A good O-line would do absolute wonders to our Offense. Youre being to nice about our run game. Peoples and Holston havent gotten it done. McClease and McMillan are the best backs we have because theyre better athletes and quicker than the other 2. Coleman Fox is also super quick and agile. Fact is, we need better O-line recruits to reach that next level.

Pour some Beer on it

I would rank the backs in exact opposite order as you. Fox is not a starting running back. I agree there is room for improvement on the o line, but the running back talent was the bigger problem this year in my opinion. Not to even mention the fact that defenses didn't have to respect our young receivers and could stack the box.

"with all due respect, and remember I’m sayin’ it with all due respect, that idea ain’t worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin’ it on" - Ricky Bobby

Appears 3* OT Walker Culver decommitted from Colorado...What are the chances we land him?

I think I read that Ohio State were making some moves on him.

That's what I had read as well, but I would very happily take him.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

My #sauces have led me to believe...

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I like the optimism. I like this class, but still some big names out there that seem obtainable.

We're these #sauces leading you to believe this before or after the OSU offer? That would be a pretty big deal if we held off OSU for an OL. Especially if we end up losing McFadden.

leg for cryptic positivity and if I could give another for Ash vs Evil Dead I would. God I love that show

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

How do you feel about McFadden now that he hasn't committed yet?

Is he waiting for a committable offer?

Keep calm, Gobble on

You are way more optimistic than I. Us getting the last official is a good thing though.

BAG coming with it again!
I gotta feeling we may need to strap
In for this one.

Hokie Love!

I wonder is Penn State's OC Moorehead leaving to coach at Miss St. has any effect for us in recruiting. Penn State has been killing it on the trail recently and stealing a lot of our top targets. Hopefully this can only improve our shot with guys like Rasheed Walker, Devyn Ford, and many others.

2019 OL/Safety

I did a double-take when I saw this and thought, "A guy big enough to play OL and athletic enough to play safety?!?"

Then I did a little digging and realized this should say OLB/S and I got a little disappointed - thought this kid could have been a football unicorn!

2019 OL/Safety/TE/QB

We had a unicorn once, Michael Vick.

Looking like maybe Vols will land Brohm, but another name I saw was Doeren. According to SI,

Doeren, a Kansas native, who is 56–34 in stints at Northern Illinois and NC State, led the Wolfpack to an 8–4 finish after entering the season on the hot seat. A source told SI that he would be very tempted by the Vols job.

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, but if that were to happen how does that affect us recruiting-wise? Realize the likelihood of him leaving is low I guess I'm just curious.

probably in the coaching carousel thread.......

ESPN just had an article about it too. Not sure how possible it is, but they definitely have some commits that we went after:

DT Alim McNeill
RB Ricky Person
ATH Devon Graves
OL Gabriel Gonzalez

These would be the names at the top of my list.

Payton Wilson was going to commit to them tomorrow, but now that will likely be put on hold. These rumors aren't doing them any favors with the guys they have committed either....

LA! Dropping knowledge as usual! Keep it coming brothah!

Hokie Love!

Shame that DD is staying in Raleigh. We had a couple of their recruits reach out last night in the event that he went to Knoxville but now I think they stay put. Wouldn't count out a visit from Alim at some point however.

Reading all these message boards the last few days have told me one thing is certain. We are getting all Florida's, Tennessee's, NCSU, FSU's, And Oregons good recruits. In my panicked voice, "How will the numbers work now?!?"

Curious how many coaches bolt right after the early signing day this year...

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

As I have thought all along, 247 just updated their composite and have Quincy and Chamarri Conner bumped up to 4 stars. Both are studs and most of our other recurits got bumped up to high 3 stars. Hopefully Quincy will continue to get bumped a little higher and that we can bring in 4 more 4*'s in Webb, Dax, Walker (either Rasheed or Walker Culver, and Mitchell).

Edit: Class is now up to #17 in composite!

They weren't bumped, Scout was just dropped from the composite equation.

....because they stopped being relevant in 2004.

Sorry maybe not bumped per se, but now more accurately represented. Quincy and Conner are legit 4 star talents and most of our recruits are in the high 3* level. Hopefully most of them will get actual bumps when 247 finishes going through senior film or whatever else they do.

QP finally get his 4 star, and a couple of our commits get some bumping up on 247. Yeeeah

Dunno, but if we somehow got Slade then we don't get Ford. So, pick your poison.

So happy for QP, and the others who got "bumped" up finally, if we finish strong a top 15-20 finish isn't out of the question, not bad for a second year of recruiting by this staff.

Yeah but that doesn't include more rankings bumps coming up beyond just dropping Scout from the equation. I still don't think we can get higher than 20 though unless we can land either Rasheed Walker or KJ.

So the '18 class is looking to end up pretty much where VT's been for most of the past 15 years or so?

So uh...they got any running backs that can start immediately?

I know it's December, but I don't want to lead off a thread with BJ Mack decommitting from MBB

Mack's father, Brian, told the Observer that both parties agreed to the decision and that his son was re-opening his recruitment.

"We enjoyed the process and we want to say thank you to coach Buzz Williams, the Virginia Tech staff and Hokie Nation," Mack said. "He feel it's best to open up his recruitment and see what other opportunites may be there for him."

EDIT: uhhhh make that ALL of our 2019 class. whaaaat? Is Buzz going to be Tennessee's next head football coach??

FURTHER EDIT: take from Director of Basketball Scouting at 247.

Both the Langley twins as well. Id like to assume we are going after bigger fish in 2019.

I'd rather not start the Buzz rumors when we're barely out of the woods with the Fuente ones but it's really hard not to assume the worst when an entire recruiting class de-commits at the same time.

#Sauces (now this was a few days ago, so read into that what you will): Buzz is extremely excited for the 2019 class.

Insiders on 247 are saying this was mostly mutual. Coaching staff feels they can do much better.

Bingo...

Always choose joy.

Any potential names floating out there? Watching and drooling over some basketball mixtapes sounds a lot better than working to help me get to 5 o clock.

I'm not a BAG/LA on names unfortunately, just the general feeling around the program recruiting wise. Loves 2018 class too.

I'm personally, pretty high on McCallister. Real OKG. Nolley I've got to do a little more film look. Kabongo I think might redshirt (Not #sauced). Just based on depth at PG.

Always choose joy.

All of the film on Nolley and articles I've read on him says he is a big-time scorer/shooter (could be a 20+ ppg guy for us) and is working to improve defense. I agree the 2018 is a good one with both Mcallister and Kabongo being underrated and I really hope we can land Flo Thamba (great rebounder/shot blocker) to finish out the class.

For 2019 it's gonna be a tough recruiting battle going head-to-head with Duke for Bacot, but if we can land him that signals that we are becoming a premier football AND basketball school (which we already are taking steps toward). It's evident from watching this year that with two more talented forwards this team is looking at Final Four potential in the next couple years. Hopefully with a potential Sweet 16 run this year we can grab a really talented forward, wing, and guard to put us in position to compete for ACC titles!

Not so high on Thamba. See him similar to Sy. Don't really see him as a contributor on a ACC title chasing squad. Give me more PJ Hornes/Jae Crowder types.

Always choose joy.

Yeah from previous threads I know you think the small ball with the PJ Horne/Jae Crowder types will continue to work but after watching the Iowa game it just reiterates my thought that in order to compete for an ACC title/Tourney runs we need to have a Blackshear-type player on the floor at all times. Horne played valiantly and kept us in the game in the first half but Blackshear's rebounding in the 2nd half was what opened up that game for us.

Thamba may not be able to get to Blackshear's level but he is the best big man available in the 2018 class. We need another 6'10" guy to give Blackshear 10-15 minutes next year to prevent the 2nd and 3rd chance points teams get when we don't have a guy over 6'7" on the floor.

I think you take elite big men. I don't think you take big men just because they're big or that they're the best remaining big when you can get a better, ACC level talent at wing/guard/undersized 4.

Always choose joy.

I agree that taking elite big men would be preferred but when you only have one player over 6'7" on your roster and that guy also went down in the last game briefly along with being hurt all last year, right now we need more size. We have enough ACC-claiber 6'5"-6'7" wings to go around (including Nolley next year) but need a defender/rebounder that can at least hold there own defensively against guys like the Duke, UNC, Louisville, and FSU bigs. They don't necessarily have to score 10ppg but at least can hold their own down low and get crucial defenseive rebounds and blocks.

The Iowa game reinforced my belief that VT can do what we do with small ball and be a problem. When we didn't hit enough shots or play intense enough defense, it was easy for them to rebound and push the ball to the post. When we hit shots and defending the perimeter (and ran), that big Iowa team couldn't do anything.

The ACC will have a lot better big teams than that Iowa team, but the model is still the same. Hit shots, defend on the perimeter, get up and down. On the nights we hit shots, nobody in the ACC, no matter how big they are, is going to be excited to play us.

Yes but we aren't going to be able to hit shots at a record pace or play defense well for 40 minutes. In those times it's critical to have someone on the floor who makes opposing guards think twice before driving into the lane and to prevent teams from 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th chances. With a small ball lineup, we have been able to play most teams tough but have lost most of our big games because we can't get critical defensive rebounds or have someone that can influence shots down low.

but have lost most of our big games because we can't get critical defensive rebounds or have someone that can influence shots down low.

...but we won most of our big games because we spread the floor, shot the ball well, got out in penetration and defended the perimeter ferociously.

When our system doesn't work, it doesn't work. UVA's system doesn't work sometimes too. Ask Florida.

When our system works, it works. It's a valid system, so valid that it's not even that unusual anymore. Ask Villanova.

This is 1985 anymore. You don't need twin towers. You don't need to cover all three points on box outs anymore. You don't need to run the offense through the post. Sure, some teams are still doing this and god bless them. But the players needed for that aren't available for everyone. So create another strategy, like play small, shoot 3's/FT's/Layups, don't worry about offensive rebounds...get back on D instead. We rarely post a guy up, just do it for show a handful of times a game to keep the D honest. We treat the middle of the floor as a distribution center, and....more importantly....as space for which to maneuver.

It's like a 3-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense. Sure, if you are Bama, that can work. Of if you build your entire system around it like Stanford does. But college football has moved on, you can spread it out and win. Win a lot. Buzz's system isn't invalid because we aren't UNC or FSU or Georgetown circa 1985.

I am agreeing with you that his style is what has transformed us from a bottom feeder to a contender but just think that throwing in a 6'10" guy that can run the floor and get rebounds makes Buzz's style even more lethal!

Agreed.

Thamba, like Sy, is a guy I wouldn't mind having on the bench to counter big teams from time to time.

But Buzz has identified the market inefficiency, it's 6'6" guys in the post. Way too many of these guys are skilled and overlooked. The problem is that, like Billy Beane found out, the rest of the country is going to stop undervaluing these guys and its going to be tough to find the good ones. You see it now, a lot of good teams are playing lots of minutes without a guy 6'8" or taller on the floor. Northwestern did it the other night against Lammers and GT; Pardon was their biggest guy at 6'6" and he got the big rebound when they needed it. And how did GT win? With a guard who can get to rack named Jackson scoring the winning basket at the buzzer.
