Oooooo who can I offend with my informtation this time???

Oh you can offend me with your information whenever you want.

Wacchu wanna know boi?

What's up with the JUCO CB, Webb? Are we really going to add another DB to this class?

All depends on the visit. Once we get that solidified, we should be bring it on home. Has a relationship with Coach BM from his days at wvu and knows that can come in and immediately start.

Bigger recruit than Gervin IMO. Might not be as skilled as Gervin, but the physical talent is there and he is mature enough to come right in, pick up the scheme, and shore up that corner spot opposite of AA or Watts.

Can we not call Mitchell "coach BM?" I'd like to reserve that particular nickname for LOLUVa's coach. You know, because bowel movement.

Downvoted due to offensive abbr.'s!

I'm not that high on gervin. Kid was getting ate up camping. I do like Webb over Gervin based on size alone. Haven't peeped Webb's film just yet tho. When I do I'll gladly shed some light. I'm no expert with that said, I know a gamer when I see one.

Hokie Love!

When will you tell us that we are not pursuing Gervin any more?

They are going to play him to the wire he could take a red shirt yr get bigger and tighten up the coverage skills

Just post the moon is really a potato. No one will risk saying you're wrong for fear of downvotes.

No, I'm pretty sure the moon is flat... downvoted

Why don't you just let it go, stop being petty, and quit clogging up recruiting threads?

Some of us actually come into these threads to read the insights of those who know something, not to argue semantics.

Jeebus H. Christmas with the down votes...

What exactly is offensive about this?

I thought it was funny.

Go back to part 1 of the October thread and you'll see why

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

Seen it... still don't get it.

Not feeling very contrarian today...maybe another day.

It does seem to be quite the coincidence that your information is always the same as vtscoop, just right after they post it. Who knows, maybe you have the same source? But I would like to read something you post that I didnt already read over there.

LA/BAG...........Any thoughts on McFadden with the Clemson loss? I know W/L don't mean everything to a recruit but does this help us at all? Do we have ANY shot at some last minute Big Uglies that we desperately need or DTs?

Jeremiah 29:11 and Go Hokies!

IMO McFadden is gone. The loss doesn't effect him either way. Single game results have way less of an impact on these guys than we think.

I think we get Tenuta and take one more tackle if Jmac flips. We're working on flips like gabe Gonzalez or Jesus Gibbs, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a later offer come through as well. From what I've been told, I wouldn't expect an offer for Jefferson unfortunately.

If OL were up to me, I would take two tackles, two interior guys, and one developmental (i.e. FUMA) guy per cycle. I'm definitely not one of those guys that think stars don't matter, but OL recruitment is such a crap shoot once you get past the elite prospects that it's more of a numbers game than anything else.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."

Maybe I see things in a more positive light but McFadden could have already left if it was a done deal. His head is swimming but the coaches are doing work. Also don't forget the relationships he has already formed with this groups of recruits, they are all talking to him as well. Yea he may leave but it's not a done deal and until then he is still a Hokie.

Jefferson needs to be seen in person. Highlights and game film can make everyone look amazing. I think he gets offered late in the game but if not it will be for a specific reason and good one. None of the Oline we are trying to get are gonna start day one anyway, they all need work.

I still believe and have been told to keep the faith, things are setting up nicely. This weekend has been planned out to make sure love is felt.

So much stuff going on behind the scenes to be hopeful about.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Love your positivity BAG. And I do agree that the coaches are doing everything they can, we just have too much historical data with these types of recruitments (I.e. that fab five kid that went to OSU) for me to be confident. I will say though, that basing one kid's recruitment off of another's is not the best way to do it, as everyone is different.

This is why it's important for people not to take anything that anyone says as gospel. We likely hear different things from different people around the program and both form our opinions based on the intel that we get.

Brady Taylor? I seem to recall that he's a Columbus native.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Correct. Clemson is the home town school for McFadden

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Yes. I seem to remember that Brady flipped almost immediately after receiving anOSU's offer. McFadden's been holding an offer from Clemson a couple of months now, and I'm taking that as a positive.

I can't even begin to describe the horror that living in upstate South Carolina has been since 2011, and I'm SO ready for it to end. :)

Ditto, and I raise you that 2011 was my freshman year at Clemson.

Oh my! I thought having brain surgery during the Clemson Debacle Of 2011, Part 1, in a South Carolina hospital, was pretty bad. But your horror story definitely tops my horror story.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

wait what

At least I had the benefit of morphine. It wasn't until much later that my husband broke the news that, yeah, that game actually happened.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Damn, well I'm sorry you had to go through that. But yeah that was a tough year to be a Hokie in the upstate.

I'm just ready for payback. I want to see our boys crush their very souls. (Insert evil grin emoji here, if there is such a thing.)

PG....I like your style!

Where is Lawson?!

2011 was my freshman year at Clemson too! It was awful.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

My sympathies to you as well. Glad you were able to rectify the situation.

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Palmetto Gal, Chris...I am also in the upstate...i started dating my wife in Spring 2011...she went to clemson, her brother went to clemson and now works at clemson, and her entire family (which seems like hundreds), are in the area, and are clemson fans. a win against them cannot come soon enough.

Right there with you! Over half of my seemingly hundreds of in-laws are Clemson fans, although most of them have realized this only recently (go figure). My husband, however, is a firm Hokie-by-marriage, and he helps keep them in their place (an occasional "70 - 33!" works wonders, although the bandwagoneers will just be confused).

So here's what you do -- invite them all over for an early Thanksgiving dinner (bear with me here) and decorate everything in fall colors. Only --and here's the key -- FALL COLORS ARE ACTUALLY HOKIE COLORS!!! I'm talking orange placemats, maroon napkins, orange Solo cups, orange and maroon Fiestaware, orange and maroon floral arrangements for the centerpiece, orange and maroon chrysanthemums outside. Make liberal use of ceramic turkeys, stuffed turkeys, turkey flags, whatever you can find for Thanksgiving decorations. Just steer clear of Pilgrims, so there can be no confusion later. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES, then casually leak the photos of everyone having a fantastic time at this celebration of All Things Hokie.

I realize you're a guy, and your wife is one of Them, so this particular scenario might not work for you. You may have to improvise. But hopefully you get the idea. 😃🦃

"Tajh Boyd over the middle . . . and it's caught for an interception! Michael Cole, lying flat on his back, ARE YOU KIDDING???"

Are you tired of sleeping with one eye open like metallicat?

For about a year, I couldn't close one eye, so I actually did sleep like Metallicat. It wasn't much fun. But I'm extremely fortunate that that was the extent of the damage, and that the nerve eventually regenerated.

But facial paralysis, wow -- it can really get after ya.

Just a little stubby. Good get definitely.

Hokie Love!

I like the way you think, but ultimately that strategy would have 25 OL on the roster (5 per year, 5 yrs per player). I think that's a little much.

OL are 5/25 starters (counting long snapper, kicker, punter) so an equal proportion would be 17/85 scholarships, which is good for a 3 deep + 2... It is a very developmental position so I'm comfortable making it a 4-deep and holding up to 20 scholarships for OL. That works out to 4 per year. 2 G/C and 2 T make sense to me.

I feel like OL players leave the team or get hurt at a greater rate than other positions. I would say even recruiting 5 each year we would have at max 20 OL, most likely somewhere around 18.

"Facyson is a baller."
-CFB

Good points, but you have to account for attrition as well. But I do agree, 5 every year is unrealistic. I think the minimum we should take is 4 though.

Any chance with Jovaughn Gwyn?

Duke, SC, NC State. Unless he picks up offers after the Shrine Bowl, it's one of these three. State has a good shot because they've got a commitment already from a Harding player.

very OT - Western Albermarle's swimming program is legit. They turn out large quantity and quality ever year.

Coming from someone who is totally not bitter about getting waxed by Western twice a year playing tennis, they always were good at all those UVA sports

Recruiting experts - do we have a realistic shot at KJ Henry? Feels like it would be a game-changer if we landed him, but I'm expecting similar outcome as Josh Sweat, Nnadi, etc

Disregard

Shot? Yes. Realistic? We'll see. He's visiting the best weekend possible with his buds visiting at the same time, but he's taking his dad to clemson the following weekend. Personally I think he likes it here and feels comfortable but doesn't see it as the career launching point that he does clemson, UGA, or Bama.

That last sentence makes a ton of sense. It's going to take one big-time recruit to sign here, succeed and get drafted to start that train. Similar to how Cornell Brown broke the mold in the 90s and made VT an attractive place for talented HS kids.

What I don't understand is how the top recruits in the country don't seem to comprehend is that the NFL doesn't care all that much about where they go to school. If a player is talented enough, they will get drafted high. Jadeveon Clowney didn't go to a school known for churning out DEs and became a #1 pick. Something can be said about showcasing talent against top competition, but every school in a P5 conference can offer that. Players should look pick the school that fits their style and the rest will fall into place.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

This^^^. Among the schools since 1985 with #1 picks:

Cal
South Carolina
Central Michigan
Stanford
NC State
Utah
Ole Miss
Fresno State
Virginia Tech (2)
Kentucky
Washington St
Washington
Illinois

Almost half were non-blue bloods.

Shouldn't you look at top 10 schools that have sent the most players up to NFL? If the priority is to go up then you want to go to a school that routinely send the most players year to year.

He is following along my argument that if a player is top 10 in the nation when he goes into school and he is then drafted in the first round that the player's talent is the root cause of draft success rather than the school the player attended. Or basically that for the top high school recruits in the country will make it to the NFL despite the college they attend rather than because of the college they attend.

EDIT: PAGING PI!!!

Could you perhaps do a Coaching Em Up Part 4: Getting Em to the NFL? I would be looking to see how many players were drafted from a school based on the recruiting rankings that you already accumulated for each ACC school.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

The school, the system, and the competition all contribute to building a player's brand. Even NFL scouts are susceptible to branding. VT just needs to get better at selling players on the brand they will help them build (in addition to all the other things they will help them build). VT also needs to keep START winning high profile matchups.

EDIT: FTFY

Keep winning? I think you mean start winning. 1-31 against top 5 teams is atrocious. Yea we beat WVU on a decent stage but nobody cares about that anymore. Tech has constantly been a let down on the really big stage and that needs to change. Our biggest win in recent memory was against OSU but that was quickly forgotten as we faded into mediocrity for the rest of the season.

you realize that nobody has a great record against top 5 teams? That's why they're top 5... basically that stat is just showing that we don't pull off upsets against top 5 teams, which I would say is typical of almost every other college team.

Well when you have the second worst record of all FBS teams that's not a great sign. That's not just pulling upsets. When we were consistently a top 10-15 team in the early and mid 2000s we should have won some of those games. Also, you could easily extend that to beating top 10 teams and it would still be bad. If we're trying to create a brand and be recognized as a blue blood of college football you have to win those big games when you're ranked among those top teams.

That's such a BS stat.

If you go 2-31 instead of 1-31 is that twice as good? No, it's just slightly less bad. The bottom line is almost every program has a bad record against teams that actually finish in the top 5 - because teams that finish in the top 5 usually have 1 loss all season -- and many of those are to teams that are similarly ranked.

Man this stat drives me absolutely nuts! Can someone tell me what we were ranked in all of those games, OR IF WE WERE EVEN RANKED AT ALL???
VT wasn't born into the top 10, folks. We were cannon fodder for the 70's Bama teams etal at one time. Games like that are a huge part of that idiotic stat, I'm going to guess. A 1973 VT team that struggles with VMI has trouble beating a top 5 Bama? If anything, we should take pride in how far we have come, and where we are going.

What are the records of teams that played US when we were top 5? Let somebody drum that one up.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

1999: #2 VT lost to #1 FSU
2000: #2 VT lost to #3 Miami
2001: #14 VT lost to #1 Miami
2002: #18 VT lost to #1 Miami
2003: #10 VT beat to #2 Miami
2004: NR VT lost to #1 USC and #9 VT lost to #3 Auburn
2005: #3 VT lost to #5 Miami
2007: #9 VT lost to #2 LSU and #9 VT lost to #2 BC
2009: #7 VT lost to #5 Alabama
2010: #13 VT lost to #3 Boise State and #12 VT lost to #5 Stanford

To be fair I am only including our streak of seasons where we were a very good team and those are all the matchups against top 5 teams. I'm sorry but that is bad. In some of those we were ranked higher than the opponent and in most we were top 10 or top 15. The fact that in that span you only go 1-12 is not good. You have to win more than one of those games to be taken seriously when you reach that stage.

This is a great stat (painful to look at). I'm with you. If you want to be considered among the best, at least ONCE in a while, you have to beat the best.

Alright Ric Flair

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

Some of those losses were brutal too. We gave away games against Auburn in '04, BC in '07, and Boise State in '10. If VT closes out those games like they should have we go from 1-12 to 4-9 which is much more respectable.

Edit to finish my thought. My hope is that 5 years from now there is an asterisk with a second stat that says (12-1 under Justin Fuente).

Those are exactly the three that stuck out to me, maybe because I think we were the better team on each of those days.

That USC game was taken from the boys. BS offensive pass interference and a phantom roughing the QB call.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Yes. Never seen more obvious ref bias (except when we won the sugar bowl when Danny Coale made that catch).

Don't forget Boise with the plainly wrong block in the block and the plainly wrong push out of bounds that gifted them the game winning touchdown. It's one thing to lose, but it hurts extra when the refs decide the game for you

In that same stretch, Auburn was 5-3 against top 5, freakin WVU was 2-8, Michigan was 3-5 the list goes on. I just chose that era as an example because none of those teams were powerhouses every year like Ohio State or Alabama so this is a fair comparison and all of these teams pulled off those wins on the big stage. Granted, Michigan and Auburn are historic programs which is another aspect to their recruiting, but they win on the big stage even when they were overmatched. 1-31 isn't quite accurate because it includes those games where we were way overmatched, but 1-12 when we were winning 10 games a season and consistently top 15 is bad.

I REALLY appreciate you putting that together. As I said it has been driving me nuts wondering how many of the 31 were from games against Army in the 40's or something. According to Wiki, we were ranked a total of 3 times before 1993. And it looks like, as I suspected, 20 of the 31 games are tossed into the stat for dramatic, negative, effect. I agree 1-12 is bad, but we wouldn't hear about it every time we played a top 5 team if people were honest about stats. There are plenty of teams out there that are so bad that they don't even get to play top 5 teams.

Hopefully, we can continue to improve, and BE a top 5 team, when we play a top 5 team more often and take a look at those stats sometime in the near future.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

I hope that this doesn't get me banned or chased with pitch forks but I just can't count any game coached by Coach Beamer.....He just doesn't have the personality to pull off those type of upsets on a consistent basis. You have to exude confidence for your teams to thank that they can do the impossible. That is why we were often the victims of upsets because even when we were clearly the better team Coach would put out an vibe of being on equal ground. You have to be honest, would Beamer had gone for 2 against Clemson last year in the ACC-CHAMPIONSHIP?

That's about as subjective a statement as one can make. May want to add a "IMO" to that.

As a counter point, the rise of VT was characterized by a team punching above their weight class and pulling the upset. It's erroneous to say he wasn't something that he clearly was. IMO, His issue in later years had nothing to do with his character and more to do with his reluctance or refusal to modernize his methodology.

I agree it's very subjective, and probably the only people who could really settle the debate are players like Sam that played for both coaches. On the other hand, isn't it widely regarded as fact that CFB treated bowl games as a reward for a good season? I'm not sure what the source for that ever was, but I have heard it multiple times over the years. If true, I think that definitely stands in contrast to CJF's attitude.

I think you're right in that no one can dispute CFB's competitive nature. It's been said by everyone close to him that while he puts on an "aw shucks" facade, the man seethes at losing anything. As you mentioned, I think the area that he needed to modernize the most was the idea that these days you have to be actively improving at every facet every single day. That's hard for anyone who is at the tail end of a career. Before my dad retired all I heard about was how annoying it was when a new young superior came in and tried to change things that he had seen for 40 years. When you have been successfully doing something for that long, your experience can almost start to work against you.

I think his attitude towards bowl games and preseason... Er.. out of conference opponents changed a lot with age.

Oh man, I'd completely erased that debacle from my memory!

I'm not sure what the source for that ever was, but I have heard it multiple times over the years.

I think Beamer addressed that fact directly after the Orange Bowl debacle against Kansas.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Correct. Unfortunately, he needed to see Hall destroy his knee playing around on a jet ski to learn that lesson the hard way. He always treated bowls as a reward for the players for the season they just finished. After that incident/trip, it was all business until after the game was played. That is when you started seeing guys sent home on buses.

Yeah I understand that, however I think it's still more valid to look at schools that send the most kids year to year. Not saying they wouldn't go at any school but that as a recuit, top ten or not, you likely still play the odds and go to a school that send the most.

Sorry, don't hang out on these recruiting threads too much, so just saw this. I'll see if I can find the numbers.

SWEET!!!

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

I could, but I was just backing up the OP's point. Elite schools no doubt have more players drafted but that's because they get better talent. If you listen to the starting player intros for NFL games, you'll hear a lot of non-elite schools mentioned - and the vast majority of those starters were neither #1 picks or even 1st round picks.

I believe that in this day and age, if you're good, you'll get noticed by NFL scouts. So the questions become 1) will you get the coaching necessary to develop & refine your skill set at [non-elite program] and 2) will the earlier PT you might get at [non-elite program] be a net plus for your NFL aspirations?

And frankly there's always a chance you could be good enough to be an NFL pick and get lost at one of the elite programs.

All of this assumes getting to the NFL is your prime goal. But then if you also want to play for a national championship (and this is not a bad goal), this adds an altogether different element to the equation.

I do find it very interesting that the "top team" for KJ is kind of cloudy but his consistent sleeper team is VT. This weekend he will feel the love.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

There's going to be so much love he's going to drown in it. DROWN IN IT!

Hello all you boys and girls I'd like to take you to the inside world It's quite an irregular place to be But never fear you're safe with me. Well maybe

IMO I would say we have a bigger shot at KJ than we did with Sweat+Nnadi put together. Sounds like he's not just playing the game and is taking VT seriously and getting him for an OV is MASSIVE.

I don't think that's accurate. Sweat was going to VT up until the night before his announcement.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

I heard FSU delivered a load of firewood to Sweat's house the night before Signing Day

I'd have to disagree with that. I knew players on the team that were saying Josh was going to go to Tech and then at the last second switched with some even saying he was paid. I'm not putting a ton of stock into all of that but I trust those guys have a pretty good feel for how recruits are leaning. I'm not saying KJ is playing a game, but by all accounts he is pretty dead set on Clemson.

With how fast Clemson was able to put together top tier recruiting classes without really winning before that (6-7 in 2010 with like 3-5*s and 5-4*s in their incoming class) the paying players seems like a possibility. Same with the stealing signs.

Recruit Prosim

Clemson recruited well long before Dabo got there.

That doesn't mean a transfer of wealth to certain HS student athletes and their families wasn't also going on since long before Dabo got there...

I would never dismiss the notion that extracurricular influences played a part in a 5*'s signing - particularly when there is a last minute shift.

Right! If Boston college was/Is??? To get recruits to commit. The guy flat out put it out there. Soooooo I'm sure it's a card that's pulled ever so often

Hokie Love!

Is there any recruiting buzz on Stephen Peoples's little brother Dougie? He's tearing it up for Galax this year. I got to see him play at George Wythe last weekend and he looked impressive. Over 250 yards and 4 TD's (with another score negated by a flag, IIRC). He looked pretty good on defense too. I know he doesn't get to play against top-notch opposition, but he certainly looked like a guy who should be getting some attention from colleges, especially the one where his brother is playing very well.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

I was impressed with him two years ago in the state championship game. He's a really nice player, very instinctual RB. I don't think he's as big as his brother, maybe that is part of it?

He's probably on the small side for a collegiate RB. Hudl lists him at 5'10-190, but the game program had him at 5'8-150. He looked a lot more like the latter to me. Regardless of size, he seems to have a lot of athleticism, motor, and football IQ. I think he could find a way to get on the field somewhere in college.

Seeing new posts on these recruiting threads used to be exciting but I've got to say that feeling is quickly dissolving with these October threads. Can we please get back to talking about recruits?

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Alright guys just got done watching game film on Kalon Gervin. Here's what I came away with.
1. Profile shows that he is a sub 4.4 guy.
I'll give em 4.51 maybe 4.55.
2.From what I can see he is sound in coverage ability. I only seen one Int. He was playing safety tho.
3. Has to get out of the habit of grabbing and holding every snap. He could cost us a game or two with that.
4. Not afraid to stick his nose in the pile.
Overall I think he could be a serviceable player after a red shirt yr. I don't see him contributing early.

Hokie Love!

Just curious but can you really tell a tenth of a second difference on tape?

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Hypothetically speaking, in straight line speed, the difference would be about a yard covered over 4 seconds of film.

A 4.4 speed would cover about 36 yards and a foot over 4 seconds
4.5 would cover 35.5 yards
4.55 would cover 35 yards and half a foot.

07hokie great breakdown.
You get it lol. All jokes aside tho.
It wouldn't hurt us to not have him.
It would provide depth if we do.

Hokie Love!

Well you got burners and you got good speed guys. He is a good speed guy. Not a burner.

Ah English....now I understand ha ha

Gervin is a stud but he's not coming here. There's a reason we've been getting CB's for the 4-star JUCO CB. If we land Webb I'll be ecstatic. Better size than gervin and much more mature football-wise. He's probably less fundamentally sound than Gervin though. Gervin's hip rotation and footwork is borderline elite

Elite hip movement??? Stud????......Oh I believe you meant to say Kendall. But yeah Gervin could be solid.

LA and BAG,

Summary on the following?

- Dax. I want Dax and Rivers as the LB pairing down the road. I'd love to see us close on this kid.
- Walker. It seems like we aren't a favorite, but a big OL recruit would be awesome
- McNeill. Can we gain ground?
- Mitchell. Definitely VT?

-Dax is playing the game. I like what he's telling the staff but I also think he's telling other staffs similar things. I'm less confident than I was a couple weeks ago but fun to head I'd say Hokies right now
-Walker probably not gonna happen. Third or fourth right now
-We're making up ground on McNeil but I think we're gonna run out of time. NC Stage blind with the season that they're having.
-I would say VT is the choice right now. Not a done deal though.

In all honesty, there is plenty to be positive right now....

1) This weekend is the heavy hitters grouping. Dax, QP, Henry and a few others. You think VT laid out the red carpet at the Clemson game, yea this group is the cream of the crop coming into town. You have two potential future leaders coming into town the same weekend as Henry, there is a plan.

2) I am not 100% positive about what I am about to say so take it as a grain of salt, but I really believe our LB positions will be our strength very quickly with DBU right behind them,

3) We will finish strong like we did last year. We sometimes forget the guys we already have but there are some studs already on the boat. Just need to add the engines to this group and my #sauces have me feeling really good about how this class ends.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Yea I agree with the last point. Last year we saw some recruits that weren't talked about early on in the cycle and then committed at the very end. Like a lot of people I don't have great #sauces so I frequently just check 247 and guys like Porcher and Watts showed up on their radar relatively late in the cycle. I think our staff is good enough at spotting talented but under recruited guys that they will find some guys late in the cycle with senior film that impressed them enough to make an offer.

2) I am not 100% positive about what I am about to say so take it as a grain of salt, but I really believe our LB positions will be our strength very quickly with DBU right behind them,

This pleases me. If you can dominate a game from the LB spot, you can cover up A LOT of weaknesses elsewhere on the defense. Look at the Carolina Panthers as the best example of this that I have seen in a long while. With Davis and Kuechly going at 100%, they're a legitimate Super Bowl contender. But if one goes out, the rest of the defense gets exposed fast. A big part of the reason we were so good in the mid 2000s was because of Adibi and Hall, and if we can do that again, the future is incredibly bright.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

100% agree. You sometimes see the panthers defense looking like "don't worry Luke will get him" on some plays. Having that safety blanket really opens it up for others to make big plays.

It also helps having Kuechly telling the rest of the defense what the play is, where the play is going, and who will have the ball before the offense even snaps the ball.

"Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing."
-Ron Swanson

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

But that's kind of the role of the MLB. They're the one that sets the entire defense in motion for a given play and are usually the one who calls out when and how to audible based on what the offense is showing.

So does anyone know the reasons as to why Fuente and staff have such disdain towards UNC staff? I've seen it said that they are telling lies and trashing us to recruits but does anyone have knowledge of what they are actually saying/have said?

I feel like a lot of the time when a kid plays QB a lot in high school but is being recruited for another position (ie. listed as an athlete) it ultimately keeps their ranking down more than if they were listed as a WR or a DB. Think like Caleb Farley. If he had played WR exclusively in high school and as a result was listed as a WR I think he would have easily been given a 4 ⭐️ ranking pretty early.

Could we get a numbers update?

We're already at 22, over the summer I'm pretty sure someone said we would take around 23 or 24. It seems like we are reaching that number fast with a few targets still uncommitted. Specifically, I'm thinking about:

Dax Hollifield
Keshon Artis
Jeremy Webb
Luke Tenuta
James Mitchell

Less likely but still possible:
Rasheed Walker
KJ Henry
Kalon Gervin
Alim McNeil
Gabriel Gonzalez

Obligatory "the numbers always work out" reponse

I would add Sandridge to your list in one category or another.

With an offer list like James Graham's I bet that sends a message to other recruits that we are the big dogs too

Keep calm, Gobble on

One of the facilities topics that has been mentioned regarding VT recruiting is our dorms. That the dorms athletes live in aren't up to par with other big name schools. I was reading through the September Board of Visitors meeting notes (usually some interesting information in there), and I noticed in the 2018-2024 Capital Plan there is $57 million budgeted for a 500-bed "Innovation and Athletics Residential Programs" building. Will be interesting to see what develops from this in next few years but looks like scheduled for Fall 2020

Also interesting

  • $4 million for ACC Broadcast studio
  • $2.5 million for Cassell Coliseum Entrance Improvement
  • $10.8 million for 250-seat Athlete Nutrition Center

VT CEE Class of 2016/2017

5 years, 2 degrees, 33 football games as a student, and 2 Cassell court stormings later, I bleed Maroon and Orange

Getting the dorms up on par with the big boys will certainly help close the gap

Keep calm, Gobble on

Getting them new dorms helps with recruiting but also helps our dorm room shortage

$10.8 million for 250-seat Athlete Nutrition Center

So this is a Athlete dining hall right?

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Could be wrong, but I think that is for the Bowman Room expansion. It already fits over 200 people in there now, but they are kicking out the walls so there is room for a kitchen ("training table") and whatever else they are sticking in there.

Yes, two out if the last three years, VT has had a higher than anticipated acceptance rate among incoming freshmen. The school has had to offer buyouts to upperclassmen, turn doubles into triples, and convert study lounges to dorm rooms. I believe they have had to find 600-800 extra beds.

I'm sure that tearing down the rest of upper quad this fall didn't help.....RIP Thomas and Monteith.

Great visit for KJ. Really sounds like the coaching staff made good progress.

"They've been doing this without many big name four- or five-star guys. They've been developing guys. It makes you think about what they could possibly do If they started getting those high caliber guys in and being able to develop those guys. It just speaks volumes to their program and what they do with those players. Once you take a step back really think about it, it's really the truth. That definitely appeals to me. Being one of those top tier guys they see, I could become a leader on and off the field there.

"I think this visit really puts Virginia Tech into the top group," he said. "Before the visit, this was a school I definitely liked but I didn't think too hard on whether I really saw myself playing there. Having those types of talks with the coaches this weekend and getting to hang with a lot of North Carolina guys, they're definitely in the conversation now and so this is something I'm going to have to go back and take some more time to think about. They definitely put their best foot forward.

As is important with so many recruits, it's about our family and their family becoming one family.

"Virginia Tech is so family oriented and everybody knows everybody," he said. "It was like picking up where they left off with my family. Everybody had a great time. My little brother loves being around football. They wined and dined my mom and my sister. They all had a good weekend. When you teat my family right it makes me happy too.

If nothing else, take it as a win for recruiting reputation. Families and coaches talk. When family is important to an athlete, and they know we will take care of them, word gets around that a visit is worth the trip. That's where Fuente & Co can at least make an attempt. I dont think it is likely we will take both Artis and Dax with the limited spots available. With that said, it looks like Artis will make his decision mid to end of November and Dax potentially in January. Im interested to see how the staff handle this one. Everyone has pretty much said VT is one of Dax's final 2 with either Stanford or UNC being the others. UNC is getting a lot of crystall balls lately and Stanford could get his last OV. Since he visited this past weekend. Maybe the lack of solid DT depth helps as he would get on the field sooner rather than later. It was behind a paywall on 247 so I don't know what it said and if I did it'd be illegal for me to post it anyways. It's just something to keep an eye on.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Yes, he visited this weekend. I wouldn't get your hopes up with him, though.

I disagree. He left at halftime on saturday....

To be fair, a lot of people did. The game was already over.

Maybe he just wanted to know who won Homecoming King and Queen, and then proceeded to leave with all of the sororities.

The fraternities too. My section at the top of south was full and it completely emptied out after halftime

Shoot, UNC didn't even bother to show up.

It was already part of his plan to leave at halftime. He had plans but he definitely felt the love and left impressed. We shall see

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

I really admire what Stanford has done in football but they have had success getting recruits from VT's footprint. I wonder if a coaching change at Stanford would provide much benefit to VT, or if it would ultimately increase the player pool for teams like Duke and UVA. Or maybe kids that go to Stanford want to get away from home and would find someone else far away to go. Of course it's essentially impossible to know for sure but it's interesting to think about the effects of a change on a more macroscopic level.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Interesting, BAG. Shaw is approaching the upper echelon of FBS coaches and is adored in Palo Alto. Is he itching to jump to the NFL? And are the Colts looking at him for HC? He seems kind of perfect for Stanford, who I'm sure pay him something commensurate to what a rookie pro HC makes (or will, if a bidding war ensues). He has them at or near the top of the PAC12 pretty much every year, this one included. Def see why the Colts would want him - how much does he want to leave?

shakeit, obviously every sitchy is different. I'd hazard a generalization that most kids who have the brains to get into a Duke or a Stanford or a Vandy might be a little more open to going to school far away from home (prob also has to do with course of study). And I'd say that most of the football players at the majority of the "elite academic institutions" aren't there because they have serious designs on playing pro football. No one signs with Vandy/Duke/UVa (or West Point, or Navy, or Northwestern, Harvard, Yale, etc) for their rich football pedigree. Sure, they may go pro - but at the very least, they have a degree from an academic blue-blood and all the connections that come with it. Unfortunately for us, Stanford can offer all three to Dax - a NorCal/West Coast adventure, an elite education, and a name brand football program that sends beaucoup players to the League.

I still say we get him. )))

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

If a program like Stanford comes calling I cant blame a recruit for being interested. The Farm is the most gorgeous college campus I've ever visited, hands down. And I say that as someone born and raised in a Cal Bear family...

I've never seen a single game have as much of an impact on a recruit's perception as this past Saturday did with Dax. I was 50/50 UNC-VT but now I'm all in on VT from what I was told about Dax's conversations with the staff over the weekend. Just have to survive the Stanford visit in January, but I don't think his parents will let him go that far honestly as his family is very close and very involved in his football career.

Need to land some more impact DT's and some true corners. We're taking too many project guys at DT and CB right now to really give us an elite defense right now IMO. Luckily we sit well with some high-end '19 DT's right now and Bud always seems to find a way to put productive DB's on the field.

But I agreed with you in some respects. Thinking about having Dax and Rivers at LB, Tisdale at whip/nickle, Deablo and Hunter at safety, and Hill/TG/Proctor/Debose at end is extremely exciting.

I've always found if your front 7 is good, you can mask a lot of problems in the secondary. A front-7 of Rivers, Dax, Tisdale, Hill, TG, Proctor and DeBose will be a nightmare for offenses to handle up front. That kind of talent will be getting the QBs early and often in games, not giving them much time to throw. Allows our secondary to crank up the pressure and with Deablo and Hunter, we should be good. At that point, any production we can get out of the CBs will be gravy, but as you said, I never discount Foster from being able to make a NFL quality corner out of nothing.

But yeah... the pieces are starting to fall into place to have a dominant defense in the future. If we can land Dax, we're going to make life a living hell for offenses in the Coastal. If we can add to it, even better. And that's not discounting the possibility that Settle might stay through his senior year. And to know what we're already adding to the offense? Man.... we might be an OL away from making a serious run in the next 5 years.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Great front 7s start with the interior point of attack. We need to keep up the tim / rick dt level of play or those line backers will constantly be tied up. Can't keep taking project guys

I totally agree about DT. That's why I have been so high on Alim McNeill, he seems like a great athlete at a position of need. Sandidge would also be a huge get, but I am less confident about the possibility of landing him.

CB I'm less concerned about long term, we're taking a lot of guys this year and think Bud will get some to pan out. Getting Webb or Gervin would be big for next year's depth though as I think they would be the most likely to play early out of our 2018 DBs, and we will be thin next year.

Wouldn't get your hopes up on McNeil or Sandidge. Mcneil's recruitment is really frustrating because he was all but committed last spring until has parents talked him out of it. Two weeks later he started getting the big time offers and his recruitment opened back up again and rather than chasing those big offers, he's going to end up at a program that is on our level or debatably lower. He and Walker are the two biggest needs for us right now.

I wish the Stanford visit was sooner so he could just commit.

The idea of Dax and Rivers together at LB is awesome. That's like a traditional PSU LB unit.

Is Stanford that much of a threat to us for Dax? I'm honestly asking because I use this forum and 247 for almost all my recruiting info and 247 isn't giving Stanford any love as far as I can tell. Also, it's nice to see all these predictions coming in for Dax to the good guys right after this past weekend. I don't like taking stock in really old predictions but these new ones have me excited.

Yes. If Stanford was driving distance from Shelby he would be going there.

- Mike Burnup

You're right, but I think the context LAHokie was referring to is in comparison to us. I love VT as much as anyone, but academically we just aren't on Stanford's level. Football we might hold a slight edge, but especially lately it's pretty even. Add that to the fact that the area around Stanford is one of the most desirable places to be in the country and it's not hard to see why someone would choose them over us. I think you're spot on to say that ND has similar recruiting advantages that I'm sure they sell a lot of athletes on.

You are right of course, or I wouldn't be paying over 4k a month for rent. But all I need is the slightest excuse to move back east.

Chem PhD '16

Outside of Northern California the East Coast is way more $ to live. I pay over $2500 to rent a 1 bedroom in Arlington, not even DC. Ive seen 1 bedrooms in DC for rent listed over $3,700.00. Go to Boston or NYC and it only gets higher.

I'll give you Baltimore but that place looks like Eastern Europe after WW2. You couldn't pay me to live in that city.

Pour some Beer on it

If you want a small duplex in DC and don't mind doing some fixing upping, I know where you can still find some for $200-300k. Some of the flipped ones are starting to go for near $500k.

Or just don't live ina metropolitan area. I pay $700/month for over 1300 sf.
I know the same jobs aren't available. Just trying to put into perspective how ridiculous DC and other areas are.

Not many Architecture jobs in rural areas

Pour some Beer on it

I have to drive a bit for mine, but they are out there. Definitely different clients and different budgets. But that is just part of the fun.

I'll have to disagree - San Diego, Portland, and Seattle are all significantly more expensive to live in than DC. Source - lived in San Diego for 10 years, Northern VA for 11 years, and live in Seattle now.

I'm with you hokiefan, you couldn't pay me to live in California. LAHokie (and others) probably disagree with me though haha

Do we know what Dax is planning on majoring in? If he's interested in engineering or architecture, is a Stanford degree really better than a Virginia Tech degree?

Side note, I work with a lot of ivy league graduates, and it always makes me smile knowing that we're now doing the same job, and I paid a fraction of the money for my education. Plus I probably had a lot more fun than they did

That's pretty much the standard. The hardest part about those schools is just getting in. It's a good ole boy network like you can't imagine. While yes they do get the brightest minds they also take the legacy old money students as well.

Saying you'll get a better education isn't necessarily always true. While yes having Yale or Stanford on your resume helps you get your first job that's about all it will ever do.

It's the "Doctor Theory".

And that is one more advantage to the Ivy League/Stanford types, those who-you-knows are in much higher supply.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Not sure about architecture but Stanford has some of the best engineering in the country, if not the best. I was on the same design team as a kid who was top of the class ME and instead of coming back to Tech for grad school he went out to Stanford. They have an incredible engineering program.

But I doubt Dax is looking into one of those majors. Not because I think football players are dumb or can't do it, but those kinds of athletes, especially with as much promise as him, often choose easier majors, or choose engineering then realize its almost impossible to do both.

Vinny Mihota was an engineer for two or three years then once he got the starting job just couldn't find the time to keep it up. Super smart kid but that's a tall task for anybody.

Again I could be wrong about Dax and maybe that is weighing heavily in his decision, but if its engineering, Stanford has the edge.

This is why what happened at UNC is such a big deal and why the lack of any meaningful punishment is such a big deal.

Chem PhD '16

Honestly, I am never mad when we lose out to Stanford. They really do have it all and if my kid got an offer to attend for free I would be talking them into it. That degree is a golden life ticket for the 97% of their athletes that don't go pro. I would say the same about the Ivy League schools, but they cannot match Stanford's athletic program.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

Similarly, I've come to grips with the reality that my wife may one day leave me for Michael Fassbender.

That's probably a good move for her.

Personally I don't think Stanford campus or Palo Alto is that nice. The campus is really spread out and it takes forever to get anywhere. The city has issues with affordability, housing shortage, and lacks walkability. The whole thing looks shiny but is kinda hollow.

Outside its night time, but inside its LeDay

agree 100%

Stanford's a good school and they have a nice campus. Both of those things you can say about Virginia Tech. You can also say Virginia Tech has the best on-campus food and is #5 overall in quality of life across ALL colleges, big & small. Virginia Tech also has Bud Foster coordinating our football team's defense.

Let's stop doing Stanford's marketing department's job for them FFS.

"that degree" in what? If you don't get one that is marketable to employers no one gives a rip about the school name on the diploma. To think so is to be honest, very Hooish thinking. Know plenty of fancy school grads who get bs degrees and get stuck lame jobs.

Once again elucidating the "offensive linemen are the hardest position group to project" narrative.

As we know, the best plan is to recruit DLs and turn them into the left side of your OLine.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Who would have thought when we lost Nnadi, Sweat, Laborn, Dickerson etc that we would be rolling toward possible repeat ACCCG appearances (and headed higher!) and FSU 2-5 and in the tank! Got a feeling the FSU / 757 connection will be a thing of the past

Yeah but unfortunately there is a 757 connection with Clemson, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Alabama and other schools. If the kids don't want to go to Va Tech and FSU is bad there will be plenty of other choices. I doubt we will ever own the state of VA we may have good years but never dominate year in and out.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

....and that's ok. Geography isn't just less important to Va recruits. We are doing well in many other states.

There used to be this dependence on local scouting and recon on personalities. That dynamic has changed dramatically. Now, you can tell if a kid is a knucklehead on IG. And video is easy to come by.

Always will be competitive too much talent down there. We will never dominate it like we did 20 years ago, but FSU has taken more kids from there recently than anybody except OSU.

Exactly, the things that make a local kid want to go to FSU instead of VT are just going to drive him to any number of those schools you listed if FSU isn't in the equation.

FSU having an awful season certainly won't hurt recruiting but I don't think it really helps all that much either.

"dominate the state" is an unrealistic goal. Even Bama doesn't "dominate" Alabama. I haven't run the numbers on all states, but LSU is the only team to truly "dominate" their state (e.g., consistently gets 7 of the top 10 players). Other than LSU, I can't think of a single team that has anything close to that kind of success.

Bama's recruiting in Alabama, 2007-Present, per Rivals:

2007: 3 of the top 10
2008: 7 of the top 10 (the entire top 5; in the top 10 that year was Julio Jones, Courtney Upshaw and Mark Barron)
2009: 8 of the top 10 (1-7; this group had DJ Fluker, Dre Kirkpatrick, and AJ McCarron)
2010: 4 of the top 10
2011: 4 of the top 10
2012: 4 of the top 10
2013: 6 of the top 10 (all of the top 5)
2014: 6 of the top 10
2015: 4 of the top 10
2016: 5 of the top 10
2017: 4 of the top 10
2018: 1 out of 10 (so far)

I don't know how best to define "dominate the state", but Bama gets at least a third of the top 10 every year and gets more if Auburn's a mess. Bama's recruited more nationally as Saban got things rolling but they still get kids to stay home. If VT could be close to this in VA that would be great.

If VT could be close to this in VA that would be great.

Agree 100%, but still not "dominate the state". Consistent 7 of 10 is "dominate". I guess in down years where 6-10 aren't really Bama material, 4/5 would suffice, but Bama doesn't do that.

Do I get frustrated that VT doesn't get 2-3 of the top 5 in Virginia? Yep, but when growing the program, take advantage of the fact that a lot of these kids want to "go away" to school and get some of the top talent from other states.

"Dominate the state" means whatever people want it to mean. Consistently getting 70% of the top 10 is a pipe dream that's only doable in video games, and focusing on a state rather than players you need is a dangerous strategy. People want VT to do better at keeping in-state talent home. It's one thing to lose guys to OSU or Bama. Losing top guys to ACC teams hurts and VT has to do better there. It's especially painful when you look at some of the in-state kids from 2013-15 that could have helped VT but VT wasn't able to get due to their downturn.

I'm not sure what you mean by "growing the program". This isn't Duke football here. VT football is pretty far along in the development curve. Ultimately it doesn't matter where you get elite talent and if you can go out of state and get 4-5 star kids then go for it. No one's really going to be mad if there's more NC kids than VA kids on a VT team that wins a national title. However it's generally easier to recruit kids who are closer to home, and recruiting nationally (not just chasing the occasional West Coast kid, but consistently competing for kids from across the country) is hard to do.

That's the thing kids in Greensboro and Western NC are closer to Blacksburg than VB kids.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Nailed it. Coach Fuente first instilled "Draw the Line / Dominate the State," as he should've when he first arrived. But within 24-48hrs after his first signing day the #NC2VT push has been as strong and as consistent as any of the former. And he even pulled a lot of those elite Greensboro, NC kids in that first class. Greensboro, NC alone has given us Hooker, Turner, Tisdale, and Crossen who were all 4-stars on atleast one of the 3 major services in the '17-'18 classes.

"Dominating the State" is not the total key to VT recruiting nowadays. A more accurate account, if you have to use states, would be to combine the Top10 in VA and the Top10 in NC each year, try to dominate that. For example, the 2018 class has much more talent in NC than VA at the top. NC has two 5*'s and eleven 4*'s... while VA has zero 5*'s and just six 4*'s using 247 composite rankings for 2018. When you look at the top 7 highschool commits in our 2018 class, you have 1 from VA, 3 from NC... (and all are Greensboro, NC too). Add Mook and Hooker from Greensboro, plus Adonis and Caleb Farley from NC too and it's clear how pivotal NC recruiting will continue to be.

LSU does it, so it's not a "pipe dream". Kids make decisions to attend schools based on a huge number of reasons. "Dominate the state" isn't something that I want my coaches focused on. Yeah, they should recruit the state. They should even put a little extra focus on it, but it shouldn't be the obsession that I see in some people.

It's a pipe dream for VT, at least in the short term. LSU is the only P5 program in the state. VT doesn't have that going for it and isn't really close to the places where there's lots of high school talent. VT hasn't gotten more than 4 of the top 10 in recent years. Judging by how this staff recruits I don't think they have any real focus on in-state kids.

You've precisely made my point. "Dominate the state" a la LSU isn't happening. Heck, even if we build to where we're getting top talent to land in the top 10 consistently, I still don't see VT dominating the state, because there's 100 reasons that recruits choose a school that have nothing to do with the specific football program. Some of them VT can provide, some we can't (e.g., if a kid REALLY wants to go to school out of state or to play in the SEC, then there's nothing that VT can do about that).

You give LOLUVA too much credit. We are the only real P5 program in the state. I agree with the other points. We need to get 2-3 of the top 5.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

UVA jokes are fun but look at some of the in-state kids they pulled and wasted that could have helped at VT.

-while Mike London was coach.

I'm not sure what you mean by "growing the program". This isn't Duke football here. VT football is pretty far along in the development curve.

So we're ready to consistently compete with the likes of Bama, Clemson, anOSU, PSU and the other teams that are in the preseason national discussion? If not, then we need to "grow the program," unless you are happy with making an occasional ACCCG, to lose a close game to Clemson or FSU on their way to the CFB playoffs and then go to an OK, but not great bowl game.

FSU is still FSU. One down year doesn't change that.

Atlee is in Hanover County, just outside of Richmond.

Great question. I have to imagine staff has reached out to him. I feel like we need either him or Mitchell in this class.

That's pretty cheesy of them to try and weasel out of part of his buyout.

If he's fired for cause, the "buyout" is moot. There may be language in the contract stipulating some sort of recompense but UF isn't on the hook for his whole buyout if he's being fired for breach of contract.

The offense has been a shitshow (not a contractually "fireable" offense), but the whole death threats thing is pretty damning. Either he/other coaches/staff/players were threatened and he failed to disclose (which opens UF up to litigation if something did happen and they didn't know), or he lied about getting them in the first place. Either one could be grounds for termination if they think it violates any defamation clause or "university standards" blah blah. He's also publicly questioned the school's commitment to football (ludicrous) and generally rubbed several people in the athletic department and administration the wrong way. They finally found an excuse.

Worst part for McElwain? His agent is Jimmy Sexton (maybe the GOAT sports agent name), who represents a bunch of big-name coaches, some of which will be up for the job at UF. His agency, CAA, probably won't have Sexton fight overly hard for compensation because he & CAA want to fill the position with another of their guys. The number I've seen thrown around is $4M...

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Nah, he either failed to report death threats or lied about them.

Either of which is very damaging to the school. You can't have that. It's not like Pitino or Freeze type of offenses, but it's pretty bad.

Good point.

But it's pretty clear that the administration was gunning for him anyway. If Florida had beaten Georgia, would we be having this conversation?

They've established what they are. They're just haggling over the price.

How many more can we take in our class? We want Dax, Keshon, Mitchell, Tenuta, KJ, Webb, Gervin, and I am sure there are others but how many more realistically? I know we could lose the OL player from SC.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

new to this but I think the answer is suppose to be: "The numbers always work out"

You're doing great keep it up

Where in SC are you from?

I'm in Rock Hill. Reminds me a lot of Roanoke, except for it's not the big city in the area.

Hey!! I'm in Rock Hill too!! Welcome!

- "And now Miami wants to talk about it..."

All you upstate people. I need Hokies under 65 to move Grand Strand.

My wife would move me back to Charleston in a skinny minute, but...work.

So, Sparkle City/Upstate for the conceivable future......

There are plenty of younger Hokies down there but it's an hour and half away. I need some around the Myrtle Beach area. And by younger I mean between 25-40.

I was about to chime in that once the youngest starts college next year we plan to spend a few months a year in the arcadia area, but now I'm out of your age range.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

The numbers do always work out one way or another, but there are several ways it happens. Last year we had a few early departures for the NFL, some players just left the team, and we can send guys to Fork Union. There are a lot of ways to get around the numbers and make it work.

I also think the coaching staff has a very good idea of who they think they actually have a shot at in the recruiting game. I'm willing to bet they have stopped pursuing some players that recruiting outlets list as guys we are interested in because if they truly wanted them all and were going after them there is then no way the numbers work out. You can't make a class of 30+ guys just work when you're only graduating 14.

But to answer your question, we are currently using all 85 scholarships, graduating 14, and have 22 commits. Right now that leaves 8 spots that need to open up just to accommodate what we have now. As much as it pains me let's assume 3 leave early (Tremaine, Tim, Adonis) and that leaves 5. It wouldn't be outlandish to assume 3-5 players just up and leave the team. That would put us even at the moment but I think at most there is room for 3 more recruits.

Remember the max number of signees for a year is 25. You can get by that with early enrollees technically being a part of the previous years class but our problem this year is just having enough scholarships to give in the first place. I think we get two more guys this year and send a couple to Fork Union.

Ricky,Terrell and Trevon could all make the jump depending on the remainder of the year.....

Reading this comment like
Ricky - sure I could see that, needs to get a bit stronger
Terrell - hasn't been great this year man to man on slot receivers, but yea super talented
Trevon - WAT

We are the Hokies. We will prevail. We will prevail. We will prevail. We are Virginia Tech.

Technically they could but I would be very surprised if any of them did. Ricky and Trevon are definitely not strong enough yet and while Rell is a great player, with the weight he put on this year it probably added concerns to his coverage ability, which we have seen some of. If any of them finish off the year super strong with amazing stats it would be somewhat comparable to Jerod leaving last year. Great year but not NFL ready.

I don't pay to see Kiper's projections but I know none of them would be even projected 2-3 rounders even if they ended the season on a high note. They would be crazy to leave early in that situation.

As of right now Kiper has Terrell as the 8th best safety. He's the only one of those 3 listed on his top 10 at each position. He doesn't have a mock draft past the 1st round yet. None of them are listed on CBSSports's top prospects.

Exactly, so even if he moves up to the 6th best safety, he would be lucky to get picked up in the third round. None of them are going to go. I genuinely think there is a good chance Tremaine stays. His family is an NFL family and there is no financial pressure to go early. He's only 19 years old which is insanely young, and to stay for his senior year with his brother on a team that will be in their third year under arguably the best new coach in the country is enticing.

He will end up being a 1-2 round projection, but we saw how high projections turned out for Isaiah and Bucky. Projections really don't mean much at the end of the day and with the exception of Kyle Fuller haven't played out well for top guys coming out of Tech recently. He has a good bit to gain coming back for another year in terms of his stock since this year hasn't been his best so far. I know they largely project his talent, but numbers certainly help. Just look at Bradley Chubb, who coincidentally came back for his senior season along with Samuels despite the opportunity to leave early and make millions.

I won't be surprised if he does leave early, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he stayed.

Tremaine is a 19 year old junior?

Yea he skipped a grade when he was younger. I'm sure he's turning 20 soon but the point is that he is very young.

I agree with all of you guys that those kids aren't ready but it could be hard for Terrell to watch his younger brother go pro and leave him behind if he gets a 3-4 rnd projection. With Trevon, if he has a game against Miami like he had against Duke all of a sudden all of these mock gurus that only mock kids from big name schools will be asking about him. Ricky is a big that can apply pressure from the interior. I don't think they are going anywhere but it wouldn't surprise me if one or all three at least tested the water.

Rick is a redshirt junior. He isn't going to gain significant strength going into his 5th year. If he is playing at a high level this year, his stock won't get higher. He already has his degree

This is his first year as a starter. I think he could benefit from another season of playing in college but I certainly wouldn't blame him if he decides to get paid.

Visiting clemson with his mom next week. Still think we lose him.

"Vick's so amazing, that unleashing his skills on some poor defense is almost unsportsmanlike. It's not fair."
- Chris Fowler, ESPN analyst

Well. There's that. So what do you think he is waiting on before he switches? It's been quit awhile since Clemson offered.

His Clemson official.

I know it may have been a long shot on the flip but with Coach Mac Firing here is a statement from Kyle Pitts Dad "Nothing has changed. His decision is solid. One has nothing to do with the other. He is solid with his decision, regardless of what happens with the coaches." - Kelly Pitts, father of tight end commit Kyle Pitts.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Is Kyle just not much of a writer? Having his daddy write the statement in his own voice smacks of 'overbearing father'. Is it his decision, or is it his dad's?

Not trying to diss the kid. I just don't think I've ever seen a parent make that kind of statement for their son who, presumably, is perfectly capable of speaking for himself.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I read an article the other night that implied most of the 2018 recruits for Florida have gotten together and said no comment on the firing, they are focusing on their senior season and plan to be a gator (on Twitter obviously). Maybe the dad didn't get the memo.

"Be yourself is about the worst advice you can give some people"

I just don't think I've ever seen a parent make that kind of statement for their son who, presumably, is perfectly capable of speaking for himself.

Yeah, but you ever hear Lonzo talk? LaVar's just trying to help. /s

Your point is obviously well-taken - but that guy may as well live on Mars. Earl Woods and Richard Williams and Eric Lindros's dad are all like "at least I'm not like that."

I'd say creating a sportswear company to promote your 3 teenage sons' hoops careers (and worse, yourself) is some next-level shit. To their detriment. If you were on the fence about offering one of his kids, what coach in his right mind wants to deal with Big Baller Bullshit? Picture Buzz Williams coaching with LB standing on his seat two rows behind the bench, shouting at him about which plays to run, and that his son should be playing more. Yeesh.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Agree on all counts. It was just too easy to pass up! Leg for tossing it out there for me.

We're a team on here, my man. Gimme some.👊🏼

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I'm feeling good about Artis if Wilson is taking officials to NC State and other schools.

2 questions?

1. Can we /should we tweet Happy Birthday to 'Croots?

2. Who will replace Mcelwain?

🤔🤔🤔

That's interesting. Makes me wonder if NC St cancelled it because they think they have a shot with Wilson.

State's going all in on Wilson, they have three Fr or R-Fr on the roster at LB plus one already committed. If Artis sticks to his original timeline, then it's down to VT and UCF, and with Frost potentially not being there next year, that's got to bode well for the good guys.

Tomorrow is November 1 FAM!

Is it football season yet?
