Andre Davis - Director of Student-Athlete Support and Community Engagement

Didn't see this mentioned elsewhere. Guessing this is replacing Kevin Jones. If so, how do we feel about Davis in this role. I think he should be a good fit, though he is a bit older than KJ.

1. He was on the pregame radio show. Sounded very polished and engaging. When asked about the best QB he played with, he avoided the softball answer of "Vick" and said Tom Brady. Spoke glowingly of Brady's leadership.
2. Goes down as the first guest to nail the " Let's go, Hokies" cheer between the 3rd and 4th quarter.
3. Seemed engaged and enthusiastic all around. I get the sense he really wants to be there. That helps big time.
4. That 3rd quarter against WVU. Damn.
5. Took the time to take a picture with me and shake my hand. Always a plus.

What do we think about this hire?

He did nail the chant, and if everyone does it like that we have something I can get on board with. I also think I prefer the Hokie Pokie during half time, just flows better and the band is already down there. But lets not forget about that Frank mike drop. He may have gotten that ball rolling for sure.

FWIW as a former MV I think I can say with certainty the Hokie Pokey will not get played every game and probably will only get played once per season. The band learns a completely new set of music and formations for each game and the Hokie Pokey won't match the theme most of the time.

I may be wrong, but I have been there every home game and I swear it has been played every time so far. But yall come at me if I am wrong.

Don't remember it during the Clemson game, but I was in the Visitors section and wasn't enjoying life.

I don't remember the hokie pokie at halfitme during the clemson game. I was waiting for it but never heard it. Maybe we have to be winning for the band to play it?

Maybe the Hokies win because they play it...

Leonard. Duh.

The band has their show from start to finish set up at least a week in advance.

Nope. That week's ensemble is determined well in advance and usually given to the band the Monday before the game, which we then spend all week practicing. The only consistencies are:

* The first home game of the season is an MVs halftime show that includes the Hokie Pokie and ends with VT Power Closer (the one that starts off like VPI Victory March)

* There's one MV's pre-game show every year and it's the same set every year:
-Running onto the field to form the commonwealth
-Superman
-Carry Me Back / VPI Victory March
-the "toilet bowl" run that leads into spelling out TECH
-Tech Triumph
-Copland Colors
-the Pledge of Allegiance
-the Star Spangled Banner
-Tech Triumph

It was played at halftime of UD and UNC. Was not played at halftime of Clemson. Can't confirm ODU because I went to bathroom/concessions.

Don't think it was played during halftime of ODU because it was the military appreciation day show.

It's been played twice this season that I recall - Delaware and then this past weekend because we also had the Alumni Band present. In all likelihood, it'll be the last time the Hokie Pokie is played in Lane this year.

There's only two home games left, I don't think the MVs have done their one pre-game of the year yet - which should be this weekend since the Pitt Game is Senior Day and I don't ever recall the HP being part of the Senior Day halftime show in my two years in the MVs + the 21 years since. And, as was already stated, when I was an MV in 1994 and 1995, we learned a new show every week.

It's one of the reasons I didn't like the change. That being said, I've yet to hear the new 4th quarter chant really be "good". Mostly because it's being forced by the athletic department as opposed to being a natural thing.

well, at least one person was trying to do the hokie pokey on saturday:

You get tackled by mook, he takes your right shoe off
He takes your right shoe off and he throws it to the bench
you do the hokie pokey and you turn yourself around
that's what it's all about!

You're definitely right about Davis being a polished and engaging speaker. He's always been like that in interviews since he left Tech. He seems to be a very upbeat guy and that's the kind of dude we need leading the community engagement - especially since players in the not-so-distant past have voiced that they felt like they were not being actively included at VT. Great hire.

It was the 3rd quarter against WVU. The crowd reaction on Saturday was awesome when they showed the punt return score, which of course has only one association with it: Wayne Ward's block.

What ever became of Wayne Ward? One of my favorite Hokies. Loved that guy!

Ward spent 2010-2015 as the Varsity Football Coach at Plant City High School near Tampa, FL before resigning to focus on his home life. He went 30-22 as a coach during that time with three trips to regional playoffs. He was a position coach prior to becoming the head coach. He remained a teacher on staff at Plant City after resigning.

Damn deep info, nice.

Correct you are about the 3rd quarter. Edited. Thanks.

That video is just incredible.

Andre seems like the next generation of Bruce Smith. Loves VT and the community and I'm glad to see him play a role in the program.

I'm still not sure if I'm on board with the Let's Go Hokies chant in the Third quarter, All I heard about it was that it was horrible at the Delaware game, and it has gradually been getting better, I was there for Clemson and I didn't think it was fantastic, The Cheer needs to lead to something, but I also don't want to run Enter Sandman into the ground. FWIW, at Penn State they just do the cheer with a guy with a We Are flag, and one side does We Are, and the other side does Penn State, and whatever side the guy with the flag is on does We Are when he waves the flag. We might be able to pull something like that off successfully with the celebrity waving the flag, instead of all 66k yelling only one part of the cheer. Big ol' Let's Go flag woud get me so hyped.
any opinions?

also kudos to Andre Davis, love that guy

Agreed. There's absolutely nothing natural to the flow of the "Lets Go Hokies" chant and there's way too much setup for it. Tech Triumph, Enter Sandman, the cheerleaders forming a box around the guest, the whole cart ride out to the field...

It's just not doing it for me and feels entirely forced.

They have been transferring from the chant into a video for the last couple of games. That seems to work ok... Still prefer the pokie.
