New Helmet for UNC game?

With the UNC game being orange effect, and with the athletic department using the Glossy Orange helmets 2+ times (off the top of my head I can think of OSU and ECU), It seems likely we may see either a new helmet or a new uniform combination
Ideas
Maroon Jersey, Maroon Helmet (white facemask), Orange Pants

White Jersey, Orange Chrome Helmet, Orange Pants

Or a New Helmet...

I think we will see a new helmet because we have seen the Orange Chrome so much over the last three years
Thoughts?

What I wouldn't give to have these back for an orange effect game...

Yeah, having Ryan Williams back in the backfield would be nice

We played Carolina that night. Ryan Williams fumbled the ball that night. We lost that night.

No, lets not do that.

I do have a pretty nice framed panoramic of Lane during kickoff from that game though. You have to look pretty close to know it was that particular game so I don't feel it's tarnished too badly.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

It is for me. I was supposed to catch a Hokie Club bus up with a few people before the game. The people I was going with texted and let me know they canceled while I was waiting on the bus. Rode up with nowhere to tailgate and a cooler I couldn't store anywhere. Went to the game, saw us literally fumble the game away on our own 20, and UNC kick the GW FG toward the NEZ where I was sitting. Then went back to the bus, waited 2 hours in Blacksburg traffic before we reached 460, and didn't get to the parking lot where my car was until 4am.

I worked the next day.

Wasn't it great how they fired skipper as UNC kicked that field goal? I thought it was great. Like, salty-lemon-juice-in-a-paper-cut great. So great.

....and those uniforms are hideous.

I wouldn't be surprised if we actually do see AllOrangeEverything for UNC. Those orange pants we wore at BC were not the old ones we have worn in recent years with the stripes. Those were ordered new this year, so I'm thinking we may possibly have a new orange jersey as well that they haven't revealed yet.

The only change I would say is use the orange helmet with the stripes from last season. Maybe because when I think of the stripe less helmets I think of that OSU spin move, plus the white VT looks a little better imo.

This is the peak #AllOrangeEverything. This site would fold in on itself like a a star if this combo was announced for the UNC game. Granted I liked the stripe less pants we wore at BC, but I don't hate this combo. Go ahead down vote me all you want, we're not Bama or Penn State, or whatever generic uni combo a blue blood uses. If we have orange effect go full tilt.

Can we add a green towel to this ensemble to complete the pumpkin look? Or perhaps Nike could replace the stripes with some green leaves? If only we could make the VT in the helmet or the numbers on the jersey glow, then we'd be straight fire scaring all the fans in the stands!

Didn't Loserville have glow in the dark cleats or accents or something like that last year? I remember seeing something about it on the Twitter and commenting on how big a waste that was...

So let's not go the glow route... unless it actually glows enough to see.

Not sure about Louisville, But Texas A&M had glow in the dark accents, I think it was their numbers too? However they played their game at 3:30 or Noon so that really worked well for them. Also unless we play in near absolute darkness would it really show up?

Edit: 11am, they had Glow in the dark helmets for an 11am kickoff.

That's what it was. Thanks for the correction. I knew someone did, I guess UL just popped into mind for whatever reason.

The fact remains- glow in the dark? For a game that even at night is played in absolute blinding light?

I didn't even know glow in the dark uniform apparel existed. My comments were in jest, though if we were to go the glow-in-the-dark look, then we need to have a night game and put black lights in the stadium lights to make the effect really pop. My initial joking thought was to put some LED lighting effect on the helmet to make them light up.

On a more serious note, my personal preference for orange pants is for there to be some stripes on them. It was a whole lot of orange going on up at Boston and I'm hoping we avoid the all orange look, but we'll see in a couple weeks.

I wouldnt mind the first uni-combination you suggested: Maroon Helmet with the White Face Mask, Maroon Jersey, Orange Pants. I think that would look pretty awesome.

the orange pants looked like shit. needed stripes or something to break up all that orange.

Disagree. I think our uniforms look much cleaner since the uni-revamp in 2016 with no stripes on all of the pants.

The former inconsistencies of no stripes on the home white pants/stripes on the road white pants, no stripes on the maroon pants/stripes on the orange pants for several years were absolutely terrible.

From a program branding perspective, if you're going to have 3+ helmets and 3+ sets of pants, at least have the striping be consistent on all of them, which so far we have during the Fuente era (besides the special black Bristol HokieStone pants).

i like striping consistency as well, but all orange with no stripes makes them look like highlighters. maroon pants would have looked a 1000x better.

VT equipment had tweeted over the summer from the face mask company that there was a special color coming for us. Although Babcock said no new designs, we've seen some shifts from that this season. We have not seen a change with helmets using the VT logo, so that's likely to remain. I'm curious dot the special color though.

This is the big one! I'm coming for ya, Elizabeth!

Let's just go ahead and go all orange now and get it out of our systems so that we can go back to having good looking uniforms for the remainder.

Can someone look up our record on Orange effect games? My gut reaction is that it's bad, real bad, because Orange is bad, real bad. I guess it's a good thing UNC is a dumpster fire this year to help protect us from the curse of Orange...

Amazingly, the color of the crowd doesn't really impact how we play. It's all about the opponent most of the time.

Why was Ohio State orange effect in 2015? Don't they usually alternate them so that one is a long sleeve tee meant to be worn during cooler games thus it's later in the year?

They didn't start wearing any orange uniform parts for Orange Effect until 2008 or 2009, though.

I know that 2015 and 2016 were all maroon with orange helmets.

2015 Orange Effect we wore maroon because it was a primetime nationally televised season-opener vs. the defending national champions. Even the field was kept normal (orange endzone text outlining) compared to recent Effects. We only wore orange jerseys in 2015 away at GT on Thursday night.

2016 Orange Effect we wore maroon as we didn't have orange jerseys or orange pants because we had the HokieStone jerseys/black pants instead last season.

This doesn't compute.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Fuente has gone on the record saying that he really like the orange look so I think people better start getting used to the orange being more of a uni theme going forward. I'm surprised we haven't worn the orange lids yet.

Oh man, consider me already looking forward to the day AOE is announced. The meltdown on Facebook, Twitter, TKP, TSL, and 247 is going to be glorious. It'll make the kerfuffle over the new academic logo look like a pillow fight.

Personally I have no qualms with orange (though I reserve the right to blame the color when, say, a BC running back fumbles and the ball bounces straight back into his gut).... I just really wish we never transitioned to this new bright orange color. If it was true burnt orange, I'd be a lot more onboard with orange taking a bigger role than simply accents.

And the orange helmets are sweet regardless.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I thought the orange pants vs BC looked really good on TV. I guess I am in the minority but it matches the orange accents we have all over our jersey and was glad they went sans stripes with them.

I agree with this. Never got the hatred that the orange gets. If you only want maroon and white that badly, by all means go cheer for Texas A&M or Mississippi State, but orange is part of our aesthetic and its a big reason our look sets us apart from the rest. Of course, I prefer the maroon looks over most, but I have no problem with us breaking out the orange every once in a while. And that orange helmet we wore against anOSU and (slightly revised) Eastern Carolina I thought were 2 of the better ones we've ever worn.

I think orange would be better accepted if the lazy throwback design wasn't so bad, and that's what the recent orange uniform parts have been made from.

we wore orange against UVA one year at home, and lost, can't remember if it was '03, '02???

We've only lost to UVA once in a year that starts with 2, and that was 2003, in Hooville.

That orange helmet is one of the best we have done in a LONG time (since 09 and 10 Pro Combat helmets...yes, I will die on this hill). The way that thing shines when the light hits it makes it that much better for day games. Looking for ward to seeing it again.

I agree with the lack of stripes being a good move. And again I have no problems with orange taking on a bigger role in the "brand". I certainly prefer it over black/white/grey in most cases. I just kinda wish we used the "right" orange.

But I'm also a hypocrite in that I prefer a darker maroon over the "official" Chicago maroon shade.

Well heck, I'll grab my OLD orange Coffee Cap. That will look great in the stands against AOE. ;-/

Considering our new helmet stripe is the same as that but reversed on the helmet, it makes sense.

Interested to see what we come up with for this. Orange effect is a good time.

Somewhat related these OU alternates are what I'd like to see us aim for with our next uniform. I'm not saying use the template but these are a good example of a very modern uniform that's not flashy like some of the stuff Adidas and Under Armor put out. Simple but effective.

more trash

I have to ask, do other teams put as much thought into their uniforms as we seem to? To me it's like giving a blow by blow of paint drying on a wall.

Yep, uni announcements on Wed./Thurs have become a big thing on social media. If you follow some of the big uniform guys on Twitter (Chris Creamer, Phil Hecken, etc.) it seems as though it has really ramped up in the last 4-5 years. Thank Oregon for all this. Sportscenter even does a uniform segment before Gameday starts on Saturdays now. It's officially a thing and the 'croots like it so don't expect it to change anytime soon.

Anyone notice the helmet on the UNC tickets? Vintage VT on a white lid with an orange facemask.

With this observation now in the open, my latest conspiracy theory is that the squirrelly equipment managers have tricked us using the blatantly obvious.

Revealing a new helmet by placing it on 67K tickets (for all of the nitpickers, probably closer to 52k when you subtract students) distributed months prior to the game might just be the perfect scheme to slide one past us.

Yeah, but I mean, other than that it's just another game hahaaaha

Haven't seen the tix - anyone got a visual?

EDIT: here we are.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I think we all like the TV logo but I feel like it's bad for branding to introduce a third logo into the mix right after we just confused the hell out of everybody with an ill-received academic logo.

New academic logo?? Next thing you're going to tell me is we no longer "Invent the Future"?

Is it technically "introducing" if (A) it's a retired logo and (B) it was used as recently as 2011 (the year before Tech jumped the shark, helmet-wise)?

If you look at the helmet on the ticket, it has an orange facemask and tapered strip down the middle. So quite different than what we wore in 2011.

Not to play the semantics game, but the original comment focused on "introducing a third logo". I agree that the helmet is quite different; however, the logo remains unchanged.

FWIW, this logo makes for one of my favorite Tech helmets.

Also FWIW:

If those helmets (white w/ throwback logo, maroon cage, O&M stripe) show up against UNC, it's gonna get a little tight in the pants area over here

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Weird Question but how often does this occur? Like have their been helmets n tickets before that are they same as what we wear, like the white hokiestone for the Delaware game this year or the american flag for ODU?
