LOLUVA hoping Fuente jumps to A&M

I admit, I check out Le Sabre from time to time for the comedic relief and envy tracking. They're not disappointing. One thread begging Fuente to jump ship to A&M and another thread below contemplating our chances in making the playoffs given our "easy" schedule. Perhaps if we didn't have to play LOVUVA each year, our SOS would be more respectable? Unsure how to decipher Hoo logic.

To be completely honest, I am extremely nervous about him going to the Aggies.

I don't doubt it could be a possibility. In the meantime, I'll laugh at them begging the football gods for it.

A&M is going to have issues attracting a top coach this year. The only thing they have going for them is money. That trustee calling out Sumlin on Facebook was not a good look. That whole fan base has way too high expectations for where they are right now.

To be fair, money is a huge factor. I think if CJF thinks he's has a realistic opportunity to go to the playoffs in the next few years here, he stays. If he doesn't, I could see him taking the paycheck and being closer to home unfortunately.

He just signed an extension thru 2023 at VT.
This is what Whit was looking for...someone with stability that will stay.
Fuente isn't leaving.

I'm unfamiliar with how coaching contracts work. Is he allowed to leave before 2023?

Recruit Prosim

I am unfamiliar with the specifics of Fuente's contract extension but usually there is a buyout clause that diminishes and cost as the end of the contract nears.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Yes he can leave. His buyout is 6 million before December 15th, 5 million after that. He is making 4 million at VT so to lure him away you are probably looking at a 6 Million dollar contract or something like that. His new contract plus the buyout would be north of 11 million dollars.

So in short can he leave yes, if the school is willing to unload a dumptruck of cash for him.

I could see him taking the paycheck and being closer to home unfortunately.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Trust and believe when he starts winning more and when brings the 1st national championship to Blacksburg Vt will pay whatever he is deserved. Don't forget season bonuses as well

Hokie Love!

His paycheck in Blacksburg is pretty good right now. I for one wouldn't be too upset with half of what he makes.

Whit will pay up the money to keep Fuente here if money is the only reason he wants to look else where. I don't think Fuente is one who only looks at money at the main reason. When he came here, I remember an article about how he wasn't a fan of how the SEC recruiting. And there was that one reporter who asked him what his favorite memory was at Oklahoma and he said he couldn't remember one. That place almost made him quit football. I just can't see him going back there.

Fair enough. I wasn't saying I hope or want him to go. I really think he's a great coach and hope he gets 29 years and we have to rename it Beamer-Fuente Way. I was just adding my two-cents.

I didn't think you were. More jump dumping my thoughts out because I have seen some chicken littles out there who think just because any "blue blood" position opens up that Fuente is going to jump without a second thought. I think he believes he has a good thing going here. He practically said that this job had everything he was looking for in a position and that he had turned down some other jobs before. Nothing has changed toward the negative since then so I just don't get why people get so freaked out over this.

But... Is A&M really a blue blood? I think they're in that sub blue blood tier. I know they have three claimed national titles dating back to 1939 but those really don't mean much given how there was no consensus on what a national title meant back then. They are now in the SEC and their rival is LSU. They no longer play the Longhorns as a rival. That's weird and would be like VT not playing UVA. In terms of the SEC I think it's clear that Alabama takes all the SEC talent and the rest of the teams are left with bare cupboards. If you told me UT(TX) or USC (California), Stanford etc came calling I may be worried. I keep seeing this "close to home" thing. How many professional base where they work on being "close to home?" You go where the work is and where you think you can find the best environment. I know one thing from talking to non-VT fans. When that job opened up they looked at it as a prime job. We're the only ones that thought it was unattractive. I think we need to take a collective VT Prozac and stop being so down on the opportunity being VT's coach presents and the value of the job. I am not talking to any one specific person but the theme is pretty prevalent. As of now the only thing that makes the VT job unattractive is us. We contribute less to athletics than schools that are smaller and/or similar in size than we are. I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and contribute to the Hokie Club now. It may not be big but it will be something. VT is a special place that I think we take for granted. Fuente isn't going anywhere this year.

A blue blood is a school who can pay $5m/yr and pay for a huge staff like Clemson.

aTm is a blue blood.

BS, Plus we beat them last 2 times we played them. Tech wins

Pour some Beer on it

There are only 8 blue blood schools and tamu isn't one

Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Bama, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, ...kind of a toss up after that.

Nebraska, Tennessee...possibly.

Def not Tennessee. If Miami doesn't make the list then the likes of Tennessee doesn't. I'm not sure that Nebraska does either by they have a lot of years of being in the conversation when Tom Osborn was HC.

Edit: FSU would be the 8th one on my list.

Tennessee is the winningest program in SEC history, and I think (too lazy to check, please correct if wrong) they are third in all time wins of any current P5 team.

Miami and UF have only been relevant for 30ish years, whereas the 'Bluebloods' have been relevant for 50ish.

I have a question since this thread seems to have opened up to it, what defines a "blue blood" here? Are we talking All time wins, national titles (shared or outright?), consistency in top 25 voting, even draft products, a combination or something else? Also if not sure if you mean in the SEC or overall but Bama is 7th all time in wins and Tennessee is 12th, but the numbers shift when you take out the Ivy League.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

I have a question since this thread seems to have opened up to it, what defines a "blue blood" here?

I think it's the prestige and history that exists around a program. It's not easily measurable, but historical stats probably best illustrate the point. Tennessee has had a bad decade, but the history still stands.

That said, rather than use the term 'Blueblood', I like to use Stew Mandel's Kings/Barons/Knights/Peasants system.

Twitter me

But only 2 NC's in their history. I'd put Princeton and Army ahead on the "blueblood" spectrum.

Note that I was arguing for UF or Miami. I said they deserved the designation more than Tennessee.

'Bluebloods' have been relevant for 50ish.

Then that rules out Tennessee.

Wonder where Whit will get that money from?

Especially if he gets a Sumlin-esque deal where he gets the remainder of the contract if terminated.

Keep in mind, Mrs Fuente is from Illinois, not Oklahoma. Happy Wife Happy Life. I'm more concerned about how hot Brian Kelly's seat is, but I think the chances of Fuente going anywhere in the next couple years is slim.

Given the nature of college football, I realize it is a possibility that Coach Fuente eventually takes a job elsewhere. But Virginia Tech has had a better program than TAM the last two decades and from everything I read, coach loves Blacksburg and leading the Hokies. I am from Roanoke but have lived in East Texas for ten years. Texas is OK but SW Virginia is a much better place to live in so many ways.

Texans are cool but Texas can be amazingly "meh." I've been to Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Fredericksburg. All are okay and I could probably live in anyone of those places but none of them pulled me in. I still love going to Blacksburg. It just has a different feel and it's so hard to beat the absolute natural beauty combined with the truly impressive way Virginia Tech looks set against that background. It's magical.

Wishful thinking for me, but why go to a place where 8 wins is a failure of a season? Extra stress, unrealistic expectations, all for extra money. "Momma said there's only so much fortune a man really needs and the rest is just for showing off." -Forrest Gump

I loved the one guy who said he would only take Cam, Slye, and Teller from our team over the UVA guys. He forgot to include literally every other starter. The only guy I would maybe want from UVA on our team would be Kiser and mayybbbee Andrew Brown and that's only as a backup for DL depth.

Eh give me Blanding too but those would literally be the only 3

A&M is in a bad spot because Sumlin has lost control of the team. If Fuente thinks that he can get better recruits at A&M and turn around the culture Sumlin has allowed faster than he can win a national title here, then he goes.

In top of that, the AD called Sumlin out during the offseason. High expectations, shaky AD support, contentious boosters, AND you have to play in Bama's division? I feel like that's a job for a hungry G5 coach with something to prove, not a P5 coach in a good division with good institutional support.

And Fuente has specifically said several times now that Whit is one of the reasons he came here. Don't underestimate the benefit of working under a good boss. They are few and far between out there.

I'm sure football coaches aren't ones to shy away from competition, but look at the SEC West. Alabama, Auburn, LSU every year. Along with the other SEC teams, that's has a whole lot of 8-4 written all over it. Sumlins going to be fired for his 8-4's.

Yeah. The SEC has a real coaching problem right now. If you aren't winning a national championship every year, you are getting chewed up by the fan base and boosters and getting fired in 3-5 years. Given how most of the new younger coaches are going to all of the other conferences, I think the out of whack expectations are driving coaches away.

As fun as it is to diss Bronco no one can deny he had success at BYU, and Loluva looks a whole lot better. (Yes Boise isn't all that good this year but they're still a bowl team for sure.)

I really hope they get rid of him before year 4, otherwise we may see some bowl eligible or even 7-8 win who? teams in the next few years.

Don't look now, but they could be bowl eligible this year.

I want to know why there are people on this site that think our coaches, in both football and basketball, will abandon VT and Blacksburg for a SEC or "Blue Blood" School.
When was the last time we had a head coach or high level coach, ex. O/D Coordinator, leave VT to take the same position at another school that was "Bigger". Not asking about an assistant coach taking a head coaching job but a coordinator going from Tech to a SEC school.
Frank and Bud stayed in Blacksburg forever for a reason. Tech is a top notch institution playing at the top of the best Football and Basketball conference. We are the type of school many coaches dream about. All this "Will so and so leave for the SEC" talk makes me crazy every time I see it.

To be fair, I don't really think the situations are the same for Fuente and Buzz. VT football has the history and the fan support. Our basketball support is still growing. I hope Buzz stays a long time but I am more comfortable saying Fuente will be here for the long haul vs Buzz.

Buzz did say something about the transition of moving to Blacksburg being difficult for his family in an interview with Beamer. SO... I could see that being an issue. Fuente has said he and his family love it in B'burg.

Beamer was alum and grew up in the area. Foster has proven that he doesn't want to leave.

Fuente and Buzz grew up elsewhere, and have moved around the country to climb the career ladder (there's nothing wrong with that btw). As it stands, I think VT is the second-to-top rung on the ladder when it comes to football, and second/third rung when it comes to Basketball. I don't see either coach making a lateral move unless they are unhappy with their current situation. A vertical move is possible.

I honestly see Buzz going to a big time B12 program if a coaching position opens up. I'm not sure I see Fuente leaving... I think he prefers to stay away from a program with over-involved boosters. But what do I know?

Twitter me

Didn' t Buzz come to VT because he wanted to play in the ACC with the best?

Seems he still has a job to do here.

Supposedly Buzz put his name in the hat for the Ohio State job. I think there are more years of Buzz at VT in the past than there are in the future.

For Fuente, I just think it's a tough sell to get him out of Blacksburg. We're a power football program, certainly not at the level of a Bama but we're still strong and we carry a name. I just don't see him jumping out of this job anytime soon. As long as we can financially support him, and with Whit we absolutely will give him what he wants, I don't really see a realistic chance of him leaving. Plus, in football I can't remember the last time a quality head coach was poached from even a Tier 2 Power 5 job for another college job. It's almost exclusively hot G5 coaches or guys coming back from the NFL.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

At the very least, we should have Fuente long enough for him to finish building his version of the program. Why would he want to start over again anytime soon?

Also, why would he want to leave a spot where he legitimately has it easy on defense with Bud being here? As long as we have Bud and we pay him his money, I don't think there is a better job in the college ranks.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

Really though. For an "offensive minded" coach, defense is quite literally a second, or even third thought for him here. He basically has a head coach under him that just worries about defense. Where else could he find that? Clemson, maybe? But where the hell is Dabo going outside of Bama?...and that's even a bigger maybe.

“Stats are for losers.” -Mel Kiper Jr.

"Offensive minded" as in he understands/enjoys playing that side of the ball better. It doesn't mean he doesn't value good defense. I think this is true for a lot of coaches who get pegged as an offense or defense guy.

Thus the quotations. I didn't mean it as a downgrade on his brain, that's just his specialty. I'm sure Bud understands/enjoys the hell out of a good offense with Fu and B-Corn on the offensive side of things.

“Stats are for losers.” -Mel Kiper Jr.

Exactly. Foster staying for Fuente is being underestimated on how big of an impact it has on Fuente staying too. First off though, you don't sign an extension through 2023 that easily unless you can honestly close your eyes and see yourself happy at VT in 4-5 years. His kids age also is a big deal, which he has stated too.

I honestly believe that being in the SEC West, or SEC in general, is not an upgrade to Fuente right now, based on the booster difference and recruiting effect. But many are also underestimating how big of a deal it is to have a defensive staff in place that is virtually guaranteeing you a top defense every single year. Lincoln Riley getting the OU job really makes me comfortable that Fuente is going to be here for a little while. And if Fuente or Buzz do leave, they have both elevated VT's status in the process. We have no reason to not feel great about our future right now, that much is certain!

I mean too be fair Beamer, the benchmark for loyalty and longevity, almost left for UNC right after Vick. Like he was out the door and had last second thoughts that wouldn't let him do it. You just never know.

The fact that he also got huge raises for his entire staff to stay also weighed in.

And he has tons of distant family in NC/Raleigh. A judge I appear in front of is apparently related to Frank and all of these other Beamers who are UNC fans. Not that that has much to do with Frank's loyalty. I'm not really questioning it, just pointing it out.

And for apparently "Pud and Daisy" hate each other.

Okay.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

That was from last year. Don't you know that now that we have won more games, beat the shit out of UNC even worse, and the defense is humming and helping the offense that they definitely hate each other now. /s

Not sure where this rumor could be coming from

It basically originated and never evolved past the links of theSabre message board. I haven't seen it anywhere except from UVA fans and it started when the Fuente hire was announced with Foster staying on board. They all were clamoring that there's no way the two will get along, bc Foster wanted the head job, and it will eventually be VT's downfall.

Obviously, all signs point to the exact opposite over the last two years, but they have to muster hope from somewhere. Even if it's from false realities.

95% of what I say is sarcastic. The other 5% is usually taken out of context.

This must be the culmination of the leSewer prediction that the "force marriage of Fuente and Foster would never work" resulting in LOLUVA taking over the state and dominating VT in the near future and for years to come.

What kind of trash talk would you expect from a bunch of Wushoos that think a rowdy football crowd is one that took their neckties off?

Last Full Measure needs to get off that site.

First of all.... hilarious that a UNC fan would start a thread about Fuente on the UVa site. And that site thinks VT fans are obsessed....

Secondly, it looks like most of that thread is acknowledging the likelihood of Fuente leaving anytime soon is a pipe dream. He's got it made in Blacksburg.

Also, Fuente supposedly told LSU to pound sand last year? Not the first time I've heard that rumor.

Meanwhile, if they like their Bronco they can keep their Bronco.

Based off of how poorly he recruits and his game last year against us, I want him around for a long time.

I don't know why I go over to that board - I guess because I love to see them wallow in misery.

What really pisses me off is that all of their arguments against VT are either totally baseless or have no relation to the issue at hand. In the conversation about Fuente going to UT or UF, one response was that VT hadn't won a national championship in anything. WTF does that have to do with anything?

I'm making a pledge to myself to never give that God foresaken site another page view. We play right into them by continuing to talk about their shitty football team. They can't have a conversation about football without bringing up academics or baseball. Fuck those guys. They know they suck and no amount of wig powder or zima is going to change that. I would almost feel sorry for them if they weren't such pompous pricks all the time.

VT hadn't won a national championship in anything. WTF does that have to do with anything?

It's all they've got at this point. They haven't beaten us in football since 2003 and now we're getting better in BBall too. Deep down in the darkest recesses of their hearts they know that nobody cares about non-rev sports, but it's really all they've got left to hold onto.

It's something they have that we don't, so they cling to it like a life raft because deep down they know that we have what they really value: football relevance.

I'm sure they have some reason why that doesn't count. Like how they discount our national championships in hammer throw because they're individual championships rather than team championships which somehow makes them not count.

For starters, bass fishing isn't a varsity sport, nor a NCAA sanctioned event.... so....

Old bosses daughter had a presidential scholarship, full ride for 4 years to loluva. Went to visit, and decided it was too snobby for her taste. She went to Duke. True story.

This!! I also have cousins that went there and while my female cousin is still fairly normal (I thank the influence of her redneck husband) my male cousin is the epitome of the UVA culture. Before I went to VT (I was a year behind him) he liked to say that anyone that went to Tech couldn't get into UVA. I shut him up permanently by not only getting accepted there, but I was also offered a pretty decent scholarship that I turned down in favor of becoming a Hokie. Is it a coincidence that we've won every football game since? I think not.

Best decision I ever made in my life. Hands down.

Year 3 is coming up!

Individual but Tech does have 1 team trophy

Spiral out. Keep going

Those don't count because reasons.

No Zima involved?

Random, but did you guys know we had a national championship in women's table tennis? I know its not NCAA but shoot neither is bass fishing. We might as well start claiming this one too.

Whadya mean I can't take off my sweater? I'm HOT!

Their board admins love it. IIRC they admitted at the beginning of the season that their page views and paid subscriptions were down, and it was beginning to put their business model in jeopardy. Now that their season is going in the tank, they're going to be more willing to accommodate OT threads if they get traffic.

Because loluva football aint paying the bills for anyone. (Except Bronco...)

Your post is completely misleading.

They're not saying it in a nefarious way (at least the OP wasn't). OP was saying that if those schools were smart that they'd try to hire away Fuente because he's a great prospect.

C'mon - we're better than this, guys.

Go fly a kite then Nancy. This thread has generated hilarious discussion at LOLUVA's expense. Trashing LOLUVA at every opportunity has to be a TKP bylaw somewhere.

No it just is your projection of your own insecurity.

I don't even consider UVA a threat. Why do you? We're more than better than them. And again, if they legit were trying to hound us then by all means make fun of them, but you didn't even pick a good thread! They were actually giving us credit.

Fans like this give us a bad name and make us look like Bama fans.

I legged you to offset the negative, but c'mon man. Don't insult fellow hokies just cause they disagree with your UVA-esque snobby moral standards. (I really shouldn't have to do this bit I will, experience demands it.) /s

“I remember Lee Corso's car didn't get out of the parking lot.” -cFB

This entire sentence confuses me. Is this like C++ where the /s applies to the entire sentence or are you /s a particular section?

If you're reading the above post and thinking, "is this guy serious?!?," you can safely assume I'm not.

Good, let them get their hopes up!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

They just interviewed Tim Tebow on College Gameday to ask what would qualify a person for the Florida job. He stated they they needed a coach with a lot of passion and that could score points. David Pollack immediately said Justin Fuente.

"Tyrod, looking desperately, now throws it deep, has a man open, CAUUUGHT! Danny Coale, all the way!"

I have 3 favorite teams. VT, Kentucky, and whoever the hell is playing Tennessee.

Having a coach that is wanted is definitely not a bad thing.

And the wishful thinking continues. Seems they're hoping Bud retires soon too.

UT is getting Saban

I like the Hoo that said Saban to UT.

WTF?!?!?

They really do exist in their own little bubble.

While the Saban to UT suggestion is bad, the Fuente to Miss St is arguably worse.

5 rushing yards and zero points. I'm sure they do want Bud to retire.

Fifty thousand people used to live here. Now it’s a ghost town.
