LOLUVA hoping Fuente jumps to A&M

I admit, I check out Le Sabre from time to time for the comedic relief and envy tracking. They're not disappointing. One thread begging Fuente to jump ship to A&M and another thread below contemplating our chances in making the playoffs given our "easy" schedule. Perhaps if we didn't have to play LOVUVA each year, our SOS would be more respectable? Unsure how to decipher Hoo logic.

To be completely honest, I am extremely nervous about him going to the Aggies.

I don't doubt it could be a possibility. In the meantime, I'll laugh at them begging the football gods for it.

Moorehead flashbacks triggered

A&M is going to have issues attracting a top coach this year. The only thing they have going for them is money. That trustee calling out Sumlin on Facebook was not a good look. That whole fan base has way too high expectations for where they are right now.

To be fair, money is a huge factor. I think if CJF thinks he's has a realistic opportunity to go to the playoffs in the next few years here, he stays. If he doesn't, I could see him taking the paycheck and being closer to home unfortunately.

He just signed an extension thru 2023 at VT.
This is what Whit was looking for...someone with stability that will stay.
Fuente isn't leaving.

I'm unfamiliar with how coaching contracts work. Is he allowed to leave before 2023?

I am unfamiliar with the specifics of Fuente's contract extension but usually there is a buyout clause that diminishes and cost as the end of the contract nears.

I could see him taking the paycheck and being closer to home unfortunately.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

His paycheck in Blacksburg is pretty good right now. I for one wouldn't be too upset with half of what he makes.

Whit will pay up the money to keep Fuente here if money is the only reason he wants to look else where. I don't think Fuente is one who only looks at money at the main reason. When he came here, I remember an article about how he wasn't a fan of how the SEC recruiting. And there was that one reporter who asked him what his favorite memory was at Oklahoma and he said he couldn't remember one. That place almost made him quit football. I just can't see him going back there.

Fair enough. I wasn't saying I hope or want him to go. I really think he's a great coach and hope he gets 29 years and we have to rename it Beamer-Fuente Way. I was just adding my two-cents.

I didn't think you were. More jump dumping my thoughts out because I have seen some chicken littles out there who think just because any "blue blood" position opens up that Fuente is going to jump without a second thought. I think he believes he has a good thing going here. He practically said that this job had everything he was looking for in a position and that he had turned down some other jobs before. Nothing has changed toward the negative since then so I just don't get why people get so freaked out over this.

But... Is A&M really a blue blood? I think they're in that sub blue blood tier. I know they have three claimed national titles dating back to 1939 but those really don't mean much given how there was no consensus on what a national title meant back then. They are now in the SEC and their rival is LSU. They no longer play the Longhorns as a rival. That's weird and would be like VT not playing UVA. In terms of the SEC I think it's clear that Alabama takes all the SEC talent and the rest of the teams are left with bare cupboards. If you told me UT(TX) or USC (California), Stanford etc came calling I may be worried. I keep seeing this "close to home" thing. How many professional base where they work on being "close to home?" You go where the work is and where you think you can find the best environment. I know one thing from talking to non-VT fans. When that job opened up they looked at it as a prime job. We're the only ones that thought it was unattractive. I think we need to take a collective VT Prozac and stop being so down on the opportunity being VT's coach presents and the value of the job. I am not talking to any one specific person but the theme is pretty prevalent. As of now the only thing that makes the VT job unattractive is us. We contribute less to athletics than schools that are smaller and/or similar in size than we are. I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and contribute to the Hokie Club now. It may not be big but it will be something. VT is a special place that I think we take for granted. Fuente isn't going anywhere this year.

A blue blood is a school who can pay $5m/yr and pay for a huge staff like Clemson.

aTm is a blue blood.

Especially if he gets a Sumlin-esque deal where he gets the remainder of the contract if terminated.

Keep in mind, Mrs Fuente is from Illinois, not Oklahoma. Happy Wife Happy Life. I'm more concerned about how hot Brian Kelly's seat is, but I think the chances of Fuente going anywhere in the next couple years is slim.

Given the nature of college football, I realize it is a possibility that Coach Fuente eventually takes a job elsewhere. But Virginia Tech has had a better program than TAM the last two decades and from everything I read, coach loves Blacksburg and leading the Hokies. I am from Roanoke but have lived in East Texas for ten years. Texas is OK but SW Virginia is a much better place to live in so many ways.

Texans are cool but Texas can be amazingly "meh." I've been to Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Fredericksburg. All are okay and I could probably live in anyone of those places but none of them pulled me in. I still love going to Blacksburg. It just has a different feel and it's so hard to beat the absolute natural beauty combined with the truly impressive way Virginia Tech looks set against that background. It's magical.

Wishful thinking for me, but why go to a place where 8 wins is a failure of a season? Extra stress, unrealistic expectations, all for extra money. "Momma said there's only so much fortune a man really needs and the rest is just for showing off." -Forrest Gump

I loved the one guy who said he would only take Cam, Slye, and Teller from our team over the UVA guys. He forgot to include literally every other starter. The only guy I would maybe want from UVA on our team would be Kiser and mayybbbee Andrew Brown and that's only as a backup for DL depth.

Eh give me Blanding too but those would literally be the only 3

I don't see Fuente jumping ship... Why go from a team that realistically has a chance to play for a national title within the next few years to a team that is looking more and more like a dumpster fire every week...?

A&M is in a bad spot because Sumlin has lost control of the team. If Fuente thinks that he can get better recruits at A&M and turn around the culture Sumlin has allowed faster than he can win a national title here, then he goes.

How's TAM's AD? That matters a lot.

In top of that, the AD called Sumlin out during the offseason. High expectations, shaky AD support, contentious boosters, AND you have to play in Bama's division? I feel like that's a job for a hungry G5 coach with something to prove, not a P5 coach in a good division with good institutional support.

And Fuente has specifically said several times now that Whit is one of the reasons he came here. Don't underestimate the benefit of working under a good boss. They are few and far between out there.

I'm sure football coaches aren't ones to shy away from competition, but look at the SEC West. Alabama, Auburn, LSU every year. Along with the other SEC teams, that's has a whole lot of 8-4 written all over it. Sumlins going to be fired for his 8-4's.

Yeah. The SEC has a real coaching problem right now. If you aren't winning a national championship every year, you are getting chewed up by the fan base and boosters and getting fired in 3-5 years. Given how most of the new younger coaches are going to all of the other conferences, I think the out of whack expectations are driving coaches away.

EDIT: This is for Le Sabre for even suggesting Fuente leaving and then the people talking about it on here. Cmon Man...

Really underscores which school does a better job hiring for football. Their fans want our coach to leave. We want their coach to stay.

I have a friend that swears his family moved away from Bburg and that worried me. Is that false intel? That would really calm my nerves.

He mentioned in an interview recently he lives in the same neighborhood as Beamer, so I think that's definitely false

I think that same interview mentioned that wife and kids take an extended vacay to the grandparents during fall camp so perhaps someone took that out of context. It sounded like something they do every year.

LOLUVA

This game so far has reinforced my second favorite thing in college football (Hokies dominating being the first). UVA getting punched in the mouth...

I would keep KB. Not sure which RB. The Oline is a wash, maybe I take Teller. Perhaps our guys end up with a better line by year's end.

We have some ballers.

You don't have shit......

Where is Lawson?!

Either they're playing well tonight, or Boise is malfunctioning, or both.

As fun as it is to diss Bronco no one can deny he had success at BYU, and Loluva looks a whole lot better. (Yes Boise isn't all that good this year but they're still a bowl team for sure.)

I really hope they get rid of him before year 4, otherwise we may see some bowl eligible or even 7-8 win who? teams in the next few years.

Don't look now, but they could be bowl eligible this year.

To be fair, can you blame them for wanting that?

How does that old saying go? "If you can't beat them, hope that the opposing coach eating your lunch leaves and solves your problem for you?"

I want to know why there are people on this site that think our coaches, in both football and basketball, will abandon VT and Blacksburg for a SEC or "Blue Blood" School.
When was the last time we had a head coach or high level coach, ex. O/D Coordinator, leave VT to take the same position at another school that was "Bigger". Not asking about an assistant coach taking a head coaching job but a coordinator going from Tech to a SEC school.
Frank and Bud stayed in Blacksburg forever for a reason. Tech is a top notch institution playing at the top of the best Football and Basketball conference. We are the type of school many coaches dream about. All this "Will so and so leave for the SEC" talk makes me crazy every time I see it.

To be fair, I don't really think the situations are the same for Fuente and Buzz. VT football has the history and the fan support. Our basketball support is still growing. I hope Buzz stays a long time but I am more comfortable saying Fuente will be here for the long haul vs Buzz.

Buzz did say something about the transition of moving to Blacksburg being difficult for his family in an interview with Beamer. SO... I could see that being an issue. Fuente has said he and his family love it in B'burg.

Beamer was alum and grew up in the area. Foster has proven that he doesn't want to leave.

Fuente and Buzz grew up elsewhere, and have moved around the country to climb the career ladder (there's nothing wrong with that btw). As it stands, I think VT is the second-to-top rung on the ladder when it comes to football, and second/third rung when it comes to Basketball. I don't see either coach making a lateral move unless they are unhappy with their current situation. A vertical move is possible.

I honestly see Buzz going to a big time B12 program if a coaching position opens up. I'm not sure I see Fuente leaving... I think he prefers to stay away from a program with over-involved boosters. But what do I know?

Twitter me

Didn' t Buzz come to VT because he wanted to play in the ACC with the best?

Seems he still has a job to do here.

Supposedly Buzz put his name in the hat for the Ohio State job. I think there are more years of Buzz at VT in the past than there are in the future.

For Fuente, I just think it's a tough sell to get him out of Blacksburg. We're a power football program, certainly not at the level of a Bama but we're still strong and we carry a name. I just don't see him jumping out of this job anytime soon. As long as we can financially support him, and with Whit we absolutely will give him what he wants, I don't really see a realistic chance of him leaving. Plus, in football I can't remember the last time a quality head coach was poached from even a Tier 2 Power 5 job for another college job. It's almost exclusively hot G5 coaches or guys coming back from the NFL.

Don't let this comment take away from the fact that Arkansas blew a 24 point 2nd half lead in the Belk Bowl.
Don't let the Belk Bowl take away from the fact that Matt Ryan blew a 25 point 2nd half lead in the Super Bowl.

At the very least, we should have Fuente long enough for him to finish building his version of the program. Why would he want to start over again anytime soon?

Also, why would he want to leave a spot where he legitimately has it easy on defense with Bud being here? As long as we have Bud and we pay him his money, I don't think there is a better job in the college ranks.

Don't let this comment take away from the fact that Arkansas blew a 24 point 2nd half lead in the Belk Bowl.
Don't let the Belk Bowl take away from the fact that Matt Ryan blew a 25 point 2nd half lead in the Super Bowl.

Really though. For an "offensive minded" coach, defense is quite literally a second, or even third thought for him here. He basically has a head coach under him that just worries about defense. Where else could he find that? Clemson, maybe? But where the hell is Dabo going outside of Bama?...and that's even a bigger maybe.

"I'm a Miller Lite guy, always have been, since I was 8." -John Daly

"Offensive minded" as in he understands/enjoys playing that side of the ball better. It doesn't mean he doesn't value good defense. I think this is true for a lot of coaches who get pegged as an offense or defense guy.

Thus the quotations. I didn't mean it as a downgrade on his brain, that's just his specialty. I'm sure Bud understands/enjoys the hell out of a good offense with Fu and B-Corn on the offensive side of things.

"I'm a Miller Lite guy, always have been, since I was 8." -John Daly

Exactly. Foster staying for Fuente is being underestimated on how big of an impact it has on Fuente staying too. First off though, you don't sign an extension through 2023 that easily unless you can honestly close your eyes and see yourself happy at VT in 4-5 years. His kids age also is a big deal, which he has stated too.

I honestly believe that being in the SEC West, or SEC in general, is not an upgrade to Fuente right now, based on the booster difference and recruiting effect. But many are also underestimating how big of a deal it is to have a defensive staff in place that is virtually guaranteeing you a top defense every single year. Lincoln Riley getting the OU job really makes me comfortable that Fuente is going to be here for a little while. And if Fuente or Buzz do leave, they have both elevated VT's status in the process. We have no reason to not feel great about our future right now, that much is certain!
