LOLUVA Not So LOL?

I tuned in to the UVA-Boise State game expecting an epic beat down and I got one. Just not the one I was expecting. I know you can't judge the true quality of UVA's team from one game against Boise State but what I did see was the following:

  • A QB that can really throw
  • A running back that has good speed
  • An offensive line that was blocking well
  • A defense that looked really good

I would recommend we watch them and not fall asleep on them come late November.

Thoughts?

ehhh Boise State was a little hyped up for what they actually are going into that game.

Let me see what they do against some P5 competition, and we'll talk.

Wake me up when they actually beat somebody worthy.

Really good teams have struggled against Boise

Recruit Prosim

Not this year. This year weak teams have looked decent. LOLUVA looked good last night, but the game was essentially a repeat of their game vs UConn (a truly horrible team). Right now, based on what we've seen through 4 games for each team, it's far more logical that BSU is at best an average G5 team, than LOLUVA made some sort of transformation to make them a team that can go into a top G5 team's house and abuse them they way they did BSU, last night.

Next 2 weeks they get Duke at home and go on the road to UNC (not exact a great team, this year either).

Technically, the next two weeks they get BYE and Duke. Both games are toss-ups.

BYE is still undefeated against LOLUVA

Let's Go

HOKIES

Boise is bad this year. UVA hasn't played anyone. Lost to a decent IU team pretty handily. If they don't shit the bed during ACC play, then maybe we should have this discussion.

But I want them to shit the bed against bad teams too.

PLS

Disagree with you actually. I'd rather them have a good record and then start talking trash about how they are going to destroy VT (i.e. 2011) and then get run out of their own house by VT.

^^^I hope for this every year

I would rather players/recruits know they will never go to a bowl if they elect to go to LOLUVA.

it would be hard to fall asleep on them if they play well in the conference schedule. There are a whole lot of games between now and the end of November too.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

From the play by play it looked to me like UVA feasted on big plays so I watched three of UVA's TD plays (two passes to Levrone and Zaccheaus' run). Zaccheaus did show excellent speed on his TD run but it opened up due to poor timing on a safety blitz by Boise rather than dominant blocking. The safety blitzed and attacked wide and upfield, allowing Zaccheaus to make a cut and have nothing but smurf turf in front of him. On the 30 yard TD to Levrone it was another poorly timed defensive call where a LB blitzed and a safety came up to take the RB in the flat, leaving other DBs 1 on 1 with no support over top. This seemed especially odd against the trips formation because the two other LBs essentially triple teamed the crossing route. On the 70 yard TD pass it looked a lot like Florida's Hail Mary from last weekend. It was an excellent throw and catch but ultimately the safety should never have allowed the receiver to get behind him. Obviously a lot happened outside of those three plays but I wouldn't expect that performance to be replicated all season.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Excellent analysis. That makes me feel a lot better about that run. At first glance the blocking looked nearly flawless. There is no doubt Zaccheaus is fast. I certainly have doubts they will have that kind of success against our secondary, however, getting caught out of position is something that has plagued us all season and will hopefully get resolved.

That run was an interesting play design. You see so much pistol and shotgun that I feel like it's rare to see a jet sweep like that from under center. It certainly caught Boise off guard as the DL got upfield and the LBs and free safety were very slow to react. With the blitz from the strong safety, the only block that UVA had to make was the tackle sealing the LB. The good news is it's on film and we should be able to prepare for it.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Harsin was a bad hire. They are an elite program, in a strong G5 conference, they deserve better. Peterson leaving really hurt.

BSME 2009

The sequence in the 3rd quarter where they

-lined up to go for it on 4th & 1;
-called a timeout (knowing they'd already blown one on the review earlier);
-lined back up and promptly watched the play clock hit 00;
-punted

was vaguely Londonesque. Also, maybe don't completely abandon the run game with 25 minutes left.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

An aberration...nothing more

Before the season started, I said Uva will be improved and surprise some teams (but probably miss the bowl season), and after week 2 I said Boise State didn't look that impressive...so the stars kind of aligned there. I'll give credit where its due and say Uva took advantage of BSU's ineptitude on offense and looked good while doing it. This is definitely going to serve as a huge confidence boost for the Wahoo's, so I wouldn't sleep on them.

Am I sold? No. Am I surprised, only slightly.. by the margin of victory. I figured Uva could either win or lose, but it would be a tight one. All things considered, Boise looks BAD. Their coach is falling way short and I'm sure the fans are missing the ever loving fuck out of Peterson right about now. Going to be a rough year for the Broncos.

I agree, I thought preseason that they would get to the VT game with a chance to get a bowl bid (or get a bowl bid with a 5-7 record.)

But I didn't expect Boise to be one of the wins. I also didn't expect Pitt and UNC to look so mediocre. They pretty easily look like a bowl team now. They have no depth, so injuries could wreck them, but they have bought in to their quirky coach.

UVA is a joke regardless of w/l.

I was impressed by how crappy Boise State's defense was.

When people talk about scheduling for success, this is what they are referring to.

"Some days you’re a horse and some days you’re a horse’s ass. I’ve been a horse’s ass for a little while." - Roy Halladay

'bout time they figured it out. They were punching above their weight class in the scheduling department the entire time Timecop was there.

What? is this suppose to be /s?

When was this game scheduled? These are typically 6-10 years ahead of time. Did UVA have knowledge of Petersen's departure, lack of a good hire, and downfall? Damn impressive, if true.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Mike London is the TimeCop so it's certainly possible.

For the record, the orange-and-blue series was announced in February 2013. Petersen left at the end of the 2013 season.

But, take a look at the OOC schedules UVA put together the last few years. They had home-and-homes with Oregon, UCLA, BYU, TCU, Penn State, and USC. Several of those overlapped. UVA was taken to the woodshed in most of those.

Coming up the next few years, they have a generous helping of Liberty and ODU with some BYU sprinkled in. The only P5 games they have scheduled are a series with Illinois, a one-off with Georgia, the ACC-mandated Notre Dame games, and the last game in the Indiana series. They have definitely shifted their scheduling philosophy.

Pretty sure Bronco asked for an OOC schedule where he might actually win a game.

Was that before or after he lost to Richmond?

Both

The Mud Dogs are going to the Bourbon Bowl!!!

After watching this game, I think UVA is moving from laughing stock to low level bowl team. If they can play that well throughout the season, they will definitely get 6+ wins. I still give us a 75%-85% chance of beating them, but that could change in either direction as the season goes on.

Was ding a ding, dang my dang a long ling long....

Interesting, mid October and GT was 11th and UDub 13th and they split the national title.

GT shared the title with Colorado that year, not Washington

Ahh, that's right.

Colorado was 14th in mid Oct.

Back before Miami was bak.

Also hey it looks like Illinois used to have a football team.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Jeff George was their QB then I think. At least he was the year before when UVA played them in the Citrus Bowl.

Was John Mackovic their coach?

I enjoy finds like this. Glory days come. Glory days gone. There are some things that appear strange with it in today's world; Illinois, Indiana and Wyoming don't fit. Where is Alabama? And that explains Tennessee fans today. UVa will be UVa though.

And we beat LOLUVA that year.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I don't like the hoos in hooville getting a psychological boost by beating an overrated Boise State team.

But it is what it is.

Remember, they are riding a bronco. They go up, then come down hard.

#HardThingsTogether

I guess this means that Bronco will stick around for a while.

Ha, that was my first thought too. Give this man an extension!

I'm not going to get salty over this. They beat a team on the road that has 6 home losses since.... 2000? I've never had a doubt that Bronco will accomplish things. They did what we failed to do for so many years (until recently): show up for the big stage (this is their big stage). I wouldn't put a little number next to their name, but I think they'll be more competitive than they punching bag we're used to being.

I'd rather they have some good games scattered throughout their losing season. Gives us accurate film of their playmakers. Better than an ECU-of-yeateryears situation where we think they're crap and then one of their guys has a heisman game against us and we're blindsided.

That said, it was my heartfelt hope that they wouldn't do better than 3 wins this year and it looks like they'll do better than that.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

They have been ungraded from cupcake to pushover. Definitely will be better than last year, but hopefully we are still leagues better come November.

I don't know how good they are going to be but I don't think they looked like the completely lost team that showed up in Blacksburg last year. They were playing with purpose and discipline and looked like a football team. That is more than I can say for what they looked like last year which was 11 guys that got dropped on a football field and weren't sure which side of the field was their's. That being said I don't expect them to wallop us if we don't take them seriously but they have, in my opinion, moved into ECU territory (Pre 2016) where they can easily be a trap game if we show up in Hooville 11-0 or 10-1 or even 9-2 (No way. The U ain't back) and don't play 60 minutes of football.

Literally the first time I gave any thought to UVA this season was last night, when my Cavs fan friend posted "Virginia! OMG!" on Facebook.

Then I checked their schedule and realized they have been playing pretty well so far this year. Duke in Charlottesville next week will be a HUGE barometer for them. They follow that with two very winnable home games against UNC and BC.

So we'll see...

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Yeah, I'm actually really curious about the Duke-Uva match up. ...considering that I think Duke is a trap game this year.

I'm thinking that UVA is going to get smeared by Duke next week. Duke is looking really solid and UVA is much improved from last year, but they still definitely have a false sense of security at the moment.

Duke isn't a "trap game" if you know they're good. The trap games are the ones where the team is mediocre until your game when they decide to play the game of their season.

Like what UVa just did to Boise State.

"Trap game" can also mean the less-hyped game the week before one of the most-hyped games of the season. Like, say, whoever VT plays the week before we play Miami.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Well I can see how Boise State would have been a trap game for LOLUVa. The yearly contest against BYE is usually their most popular home game.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I said it in the game thread, but Boise had some of the worst P5 team speed on defense I have seen in awhile. The outside was open all night for UVA has the LBs and safeties could not match UVAs wr speed. Boise did not look good on offense either and seem to be having a down year in oline. It will be interesting to see how UVA plays in the next few weeks. Confidence goes far in football.

Bronco isn't half the dipshit Groh and London were. For all the people saying Boise is down this year, London's squads would have still found a way to lose to them. Bronco is getting buy in from his players.

We're gonna make it 14 straight this year, but I also think the Hoos make a bowl.

"I mean, you know, fuck them, but good for them." -Too Druck to Funk

I'm with this. They played hard and well in a place where visitors - of any stripe - have struggled mightily.

They looked really good against a notable G5 team that's having a down year(s). Good for them.

I mean, you know, fuck them, but good for them.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Aaaaaand I've got my new sig.

"I mean, you know, fuck them, but good for them." -Too Druck to Funk

I do what I can, Illinois. It's truly an honor.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

I'm not sure they get to 6-6. They finish the season with GT, Louisville, Miami and VT. I don't think they win any of those games. So can they notch 3 wins over the next 4 games against Duke, UNC, BC, Pitt? I think they lose to Duke and the other 3 are toss ups. But I just don't seem them winning 3 in a row.

So... Not to circle back but... Is ODU better than Boise State?

yes. Because LOLUVa beat BSU by 19 points. We beat ODU by 38 points. We will beat LOLUVa by more than 19 points.

My prediction is that UVA enters the Commonwealth Cup game at 5-6 and must win to get to a bowl game. I think we'll enter needing a win to get into the ACC Championship. I think we win by 3 scores.

The Dude Abides

I dont think UConn or Boise are good teams but UVa beat both the way a good team should beat bad teams. I watched the Boise game and they finally look like an actual team.

Duke is a toss up but I think they beat UNC, BC and Pitt to have 6 wins going into a tough slate where they play GT, Louisville, Miami, and us. I think they'll lose all those end of season games but will go bowling this year. That would be a pretty vast improvement over the last two years where they have been embarrassing even to me who hates them with the power of 1000 suns.

I'd bet $100 they lose at least one game during the UNC, BC and Pitt stretch. They play both UNC and Pitt on the road and while those teams appear to be worse than expected, neither is close to being UConn levels of inept. I'd actually favor UNC and think Pitt is close to a toss up. I will say I would expect UVA to beat BC, as they appear to easily be the worst team in the ACC.

I know there's a lot of football left in that game but... UVA is playing very well and if it wasn't for Miami's incredible luck this game would be lopsided.

Bennett has an arm, zaccheus and Reid are fast.

Agreed. We also shouldn't discount their defense. They have played well too. I am watching VT-PITT on my big TV and UVA-Miami on a window on Watch ESPN. We cannot afford to approach UVA with any level of arrogance next week.

You're right. VT needs to play some smashmouth and finish this out.

UVa has some very talented players on defense (Kiser, Blanding, Brown).

if the offense plays like it has been the last few games, there's no way we beat UVA next week

I will be very pleasantly surprised if the streak continues. The way both these teams are playing there is no chance UVA doesn't win next week.

Mendenhall has buy in regardless of how corny some of his things are but they are buying into positives. Fuente has buy in too but our team has bought into his lack of confidence and they are delivering on it.

UVa LOST to Pittsburgh.

They're good, and VT has to step up. UVa is smelling the possibility of a win. But it's far from guaranteed.

I think what we've got here is a "find a way to win" situation for VT.

That "cute" offensive "play calling" and this going scoreless for 2 qtrs AIN'T gonna cut the mustard this Friday. The will to prepare MUST be GREATER than the will to win.

There is no doubt both teams are going to have to take this game seriously. I really hope we can keep the streak alive.

I'll be surprised if we get the turnout at Lane North we normally do.

Really? Why?

VT isn't playing their best football, and UVa exceeding expectations. Could be more interesting than usual.

More hopeful Hoo fans means fewer apathetic Hoos willing to sell tickets to Hokies.

I have a feeling that anyone who wants a ticket to that game gets one. It's not like there is anything on the line other than the commonwealth cup.

I think that (Commonwealth Cup) matters to both teams. Neither are playing for a division or conference title. Both are bowl eligible and regardless of how lopsided this is still a rivalry.

Which is why we need VT fans to show up to Lane North.

And Beat the Zima out of them!

I'm going recycle a sentiment I saw on another thread, "I only regret that I have but one leg to give".

Savage and hilarious

Just saw a stat that said UVA has not finished a season with a win since 2005. It makes me happy to think that most of the last 12 years are due to Virginia Tech.

By my count, UVA has given up 85 points to option teams since Bronco said he loved defending option teams.

Also they haven't scored on offense in 10 quarters.

So yes, still very much so LOLUVA.

LOLUVA's offensive scoring drought will last at least 286 days. Their last score was 11/18 at Miami and their next game is 9/1 against Richmond.

Literally came here to post this very thing.

Navy was playing pissed off. Classy bunch those Uva guys.

I also have a friend that works for the Navy football team that said when the Navy team got onto their buses after the bowl dinner ceremony Wednesday night, the UVA players took off their jackets and flexed their muscles at the Navy bus. Now if that isn't the most UVA thing I've heard all year, I don't know what is.

that is hilarious, such a Bronco-coached-team thing to do, that and talking trash deep into a humiliating loss.

I never met a project that couldn't justify a new tool.

Flexed their muscles? They have those? Well, ok, the tongue is a muscle.

Can't say I'm surprised. They've had several players in the last few years who like to talk trash even when they are getting whipped. I can't remember the exact names but their DBs seem to be the worst.

A Navy fan

Quin Blanding is allergic to wrapping up while tackling. He thinks he's the best safety in this class? He made Abey look like LT3.

With the ridiculously oblivious trash talk and flexing BS, he's setting himself up very nicely as the next Leon Lett.

Holy crap...what terrible fundamentals.

Lol. Blanding is flexing his muscles after the 2nd down stop, but the RB was driving him back and would have gotten the TD if it weren't for 28 coming in to help him.

Oh god he just kept doing it

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Why is this surprising? They give participation trophies to all the girls in junior dance team.

The offensive game ball went to Ellis who had 30 yards rushing, "20 of which came on the last meaningless drive." Embarrassing.

DEFENSE — Juan Thornhill, junior safety

Thornhill had a nice stretch of defense when the Cavaliers put together two consecutive stops early in the game, with Virginia down only seven points. Thornhill had a couple nice tackles and finished with 10 stops on the day.

So a safety not named Quin Blanding got the game ball for the defense.

Is it football season yet?

I've been of the opinion for a couple of years that the reason Blanding and Kiser were considered so "great" was because they were the only guys making any tackles for the haplesshoos. If two guys make all the tackles in every game, they're gonna pile up the numbers. Lol's defense should've been a lot better sporting two 5 stars and an All American, shouldn't it? Can't wait to see what they field next year on d.

Quin flexing after his "big" 3rd down goal line stand, with his team was down 40 points in the 4th Quarter, only to then get run over for a touchdown on 4th down, was such magic. Such a fitting, fitting way for his career to end.

Congratulations Quin, you truly turned UVA around, from a program who wins 2 games to a program who gets waxed by 40 to Navy. I predict your ego will result in a short NFL career and that your poor tackling fundamentals will result in you getting run over quite often.

As for you Andrew Brown, you and your dear thoroughbred influences should stop to ponder how many millions of dollars you left on the table by opting for 4 years of extremely questionable coaching and culture at UVA.

Oh, and can we talk about how savage Navy is for going for it repeatedly on 4th down in the 4th quarter while up 40?

They were so pissed at UVA and it was so satisfying to watch.

The title of this thread needs to be changed. LOL
