Could AJ Bush Contribute at Other Positions?

I know we've only seem him in garbage time, but he's an explosive runner/athlete. I'd venture to say he might be one of the most explosive players on the squad. I know he's our backup QB, but what are thoughts on getting him some more touches in the game? Maybe not even at QB. Might be too risky, but at the very least I'd love to see him transition to WR next year with Hendon coming up. Dude has wheels.

something something move him to TE

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Isn't this his last year of eligibility?

He's a junior

I don't think you take reps away from Jackson since he looks to be the QB of the future for the Hokies. As for the position switch I wouldn't waste any time on it until next season when Hooker is eligible.

It's Time to go to Work

Totally agree. You don't burn Hooker's redshirt, and he doesn't look like a bad QB2. ...but next year when you have Hooker?

In Bud we trust

Mildly unrelated, but it's really refreshing to have a backup QB that won't really cause a drop in the quality of play if something bad happens. I truly believe this team could actually respond well in a Sun Bowl scenario. However, more to the point of this thread you definitely don't want your backup QB running the ball 10+ times a game. We need to keep him healthy just in case.

I don't know if we can say there is no drop in quality. Bush has only come in to play during garbage time vs ECU/ODU. Neither are as to be compared to an ACC quality starting defense. There is a reason JJ is the starter and its because there is a drop in quality between him and the competing QBs.

I think it was posted somewhere that Fuente went with a freshman QB over an upperclassman at Memphis, not because he was particularly better, but because he had more upside/would be the QB of the future. Not saying that is what is going on here, but worth mentioning

Sure, but like you said, doesn't mean that happened here.

There is a reason JJ is the starter and its because there is a drop in quality between him and the competing QBs.

Conjecture, meet conjecture.

My conjecture is more likely to be true though. Not often you get a back up that is better than the starter. And JF spoke multiple times that JJ is the most careful with the ball, which we all know he values above all else. So all indicators point to JJ being the best QB on the roster.

I'm not saying JJ isn't better than Bush, but rather the difference isn't nearly as noticeable as in the past like going from LT3 to Leal or MV7 to Dave Meyer mid game.

My man, 'Deep Ball' Dave. Now that's a blast from the past. Hey, it's not his fault he was playing in the MV7 offense. He could have been a star playing a decade or so earlier.

He could have been a star playing a decade or so earlier.

IIRC, even with spending years at a backup at VT (Al Clark, then Mike), Dave still made it onto a NFL team (Colts).

I guess, although Motley was a nice backup for us so I don't think we have been hurting too much recently for backup quality.

I think the coaches have packages for him and JJ to be on the field at the same time. I also think they have redzone packages for Bush. My bet is that these packages will be revealed this upcoming Saturday between the hours of 8 and 11pm. No #sauces just #speculation.

Where is Lawson?!

Agreed. I think Fuente/Cornelsen are going to open up the playbook, and there will definitely be some surprises, including with personnel. I think we're going to give this one everything we've got.

We'll have to pull out all the stops, just like we did in the ACC Championship game against them last year. This will be the biggest game for us in at least the last 10 years, and easily the biggest home game in a while.

That all depends on our goal. If our goal is to beat Clemson at all costs then we should open up the play book and pull out all the stops. Realistically, what does that buy us other than a few spots in the rankings and high expectations. Once the cat is out of the bag it can't be put back in. Losing to Clemson might drop us from CFP talk if we ever are in it. There are 4 spots and five power 5 conferences. If we lose to Clemson we can still win the coastal and head back to the ACCCG for a rematch and potentially beat them, become the ACC Champion and get to a New Years's 6 Bowl. My preference is we pop a surprise or two on Clemson and win. But I don't know if we show our entire hand in game 5. I understand we will get better as the year goes on but you can't discount the advantage of so little film of us.

Good points, but I say "Just win, baby."

I'm all for the long game, but I say you let all the cats out of all their bags. Beating the defending National Champion in a prime time game with everyone wrapping up their evening watching would be huge for recruiting, maybe more so than knocking Clemson out of a playoff spot at the end of the season.

I wouldn't hold anything out in order to spring it on Duke or UNC. Don't go down with bullets left in your gun.

The Dude Abides

That was clearly the approach Syracuse took against LSU. They didn't leave a trick in the bag (though they should have with that failed on-sides kick).

Surprises? You think Lawson will get a snap or two?

That's my hope. I know we have to protect the backup QB, but Bush could be a deadly addition to the regular offense for a few snaps per game.

A package for bush. Nice. ..

Absolutely not, its not worth the risk.

Lets say Bush gets hurt trying to block someone down field. Now we're looking at Click as our back up. If Jackson gets his bell rung on a play and the coaches arent sure if he'll return, what then? Do they put in Click? What if an ACC title shot is at stake, do they burn Hookers shirt?

Lets say they burn Hookers shirt, then Jackson recovers and comes back to finish the game... well them we've lost Hookers year of eligibility all because we thought Bish might be a half step quicker than Sean Salvoy on a jet sweep?

Not worth the risk, especially if it involves taking game reps away from the young receivers we need to replace Cam next year.

burn Hookers

Sometimes I like to leave off the /s just to mess with people.

Agree, and our backs are looking better each week, offensive line getting a better push too. Keep Bush on the sideline until we need him.

I seriously doubt they will have Bush running jet sweeps but I have a Gentlemen Jack here saying that Bush plays at QB. Anyone can get hurt on any play.

Where is Lawson?!

I think Coach Cut overdoes it, but it can be a good idea to insert the backup in obvious running situations to distribute some of the punishment the qb will take.

Conrnelson said in pre-season that there is no plan for AJ to do other things as a backup position is more important. We could see something in the off-season. I think Hendon will come along and also we'll have Willis, then Jack Click. Quincy Patterson will be a true Frosh.

We'll also have Damon Hazelton at WR, and AJ could be a slash type of guy, also anticipate that Phil Patterson will be injury free next season.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Definitely. Let's not forget about Farley either. He's going to be a major player in the offense moving forward.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck, don't ever come on my show and talk about your football." - Colin Cowherd

We certainly could use another DT.

We put the K in Kwality

Bush looks like an NFL athlete but not an NFL QB (or he'd already be established at QB somewhere). Sadly, I think he loses this year and stays the backup.
We need him there. JJ took a lot of shots vs ODU and he's not a big guy.

As we gain depth with Hooker and Patterson in the future, I'm hopeful that Bush slides to WR or RB next year
