Week 2 is upon us, and after having re-disposed of unwelcome neighbors, VT gets a home game against the Blue Hens of Delaware. This week's Six Pick games will hopefully be more competitive than I anticipate that one will be.
This week (and for the remainder of the season), you'll make your picks at CBSSports.com (LINKY HERE). I've tabulated last week's results, and will update this post once I figure out how to do a table with 115 entries. It wasn't a lot of fun entering those by hand; I can see why BCO wanted to pass that off. Yikes. Nobody had a perfect week, though Topenhagen, VTbandit, HokiesFTW123, shakeitallabout, ashore13, and WarHokie all got 7 of 8 right. BigSmoooooooth brought up the rear this week with only 2 right.
On to the week's games.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
Louisville (-10) at UNC
Factoid #1: The last time Louisville played their first road game against a Coastal Division team (in 2014), they managed to lose to UVA. UVA won all of 4 games that year.
Factoid #2: I put in a FOIA request and found that Larry Fedora's mobile phone bill tripled in the month ending Tuesday, with a large number of outbound calls to area code 979.
PICK: UNC's got some rebuilding to do this year, and I'm not holding a close game against a much improved Purdue game against L'ville. They cover.
TCU (-4) at Arkansas
Factoid #1: Gary Patterson's coaching tree includes not just Justin Fuente, but also longtime Rice coach David Bailiff (pictured below).
Factoid #2: Arkansas last year outscored their opponents by 87 in the first half, but got outscored by 100 in the second half. You might remember one of those in particular.
PICK: I don't feel great about TCU, but I feel even worse about Bielema's job security after this one. TCU covers.
Nebraska at Oregon (-13)
Factoid #1: Nebraska had to survive an incompletion on the final play of the game to escape Arkansas State last week. It scared Miami so badly, they backed out of their game against Arkansas State this week. That, or, you know, they needed to evacuate to avoid a potentially deadly and destructive natural disaster.
Factoid #2: Disney has revived Duck Tales, and it's actually pretty good! Unlike Oregon the last couple of years.
PICK: Willie Taggart still has some work to do, but I think Mike Riley's possibly in over his head. Oregon wins handily.
Auburn at Clemson (-6)
Factoid #1: After starting 12-2 as head coach of the Tigers, Gus Malzahn has gone 24-16 the last four years.
Factoid #2: After starting 19-15 as head coach of the Tigers, Dabo Swinney has gone 71-13 the last six years.
PICK: I think the line's a little skewed on this one. Clemson wins by a FG.
Oklahoma at Ohio State (-7)
Factoid #1: At 35 years old, Lincoln Riley is the youngest head coach in FBS.
Factoid #2: At 35 years old, Ohio State's J.T. Barrett is the oldest starting QB in FBS.
PICK: I'm not a believer in this year's OSU team. Oklahoma wins outright.
Georgia at Notre Dame (-5)
Factoid #1: Following a tip, the NCAA is investigating accusations of PED abuse at Georgia.
Factoid #2: I have a buddy who emigrated to the US from Ireland a couple of years ago. He and his family back home instantly adopted Notre Dame as their college football team. Seriously, you can't make this up.
PICK: Before last week I'd have said Georgia handily, but with Jacob Eason's health up in the air, I'll take Notre Dame to at least cover the spread.
Stanford at USC (-6)
Factoid #1: This is the first time in their last three meetings Stanford is an underdog to USC. For those of us who remember Walt Harris and Pete Carroll's days there, that's unthinkable.
Factoid #2: USC really struggled last week with Western Michigan before pulling away in the 4th quarter.
PICK: Stanford wins outright.
Utah at BYU (PICKEM)
Factoid #1: Utah is fast approaching VT-UVA status in their rivalry with BYU, having won the last 6 in a row and 11 of the last 14.
Factoid #2: BYU managed less than 100 yards of offense against LSU.
PICK: I have absolutely no idea why this line is even. I'd have said it's BYU fans betting on their team, but they don't really do that. Also, ^^ this image came up when I Googled "No Gambling" for some reason. Utah easily.
Remember, we're making our picks on CBSSports.com this week (LINKY HERE), though feel free to let everybody know what the correct answers will be in the comments.
