2017 Six-Pick Week 2

Week 2 is upon us, and after having re-disposed of unwelcome neighbors, VT gets a home game against the Blue Hens of Delaware. This week's Six Pick games will hopefully be more competitive than I anticipate that one will be.

This week (and for the remainder of the season), you'll make your picks at CBSSports.com (LINKY HERE). I've tabulated last week's results, and will update this post once I figure out how to do a table with 115 entries. It wasn't a lot of fun entering those by hand; I can see why BCO wanted to pass that off. Yikes. Nobody had a perfect week, though Topenhagen, VTbandit, HokiesFTW123, shakeitallabout, ashore13, and WarHokie all got 7 of 8 right. BigSmoooooooth brought up the rear this week with only 2 right.

On to the week's games.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
Louisville (-10) at UNC
Factoid #1: The last time Louisville played their first road game against a Coastal Division team (in 2014), they managed to lose to UVA. UVA won all of 4 games that year.
Factoid #2: I put in a FOIA request and found that Larry Fedora's mobile phone bill tripled in the month ending Tuesday, with a large number of outbound calls to area code 979.

PICK: UNC's got some rebuilding to do this year, and I'm not holding a close game against a much improved Purdue game against L'ville. They cover.

TCU (-4) at Arkansas

Factoid #1: Gary Patterson's coaching tree includes not just Justin Fuente, but also longtime Rice coach David Bailiff (pictured below).
Factoid #2: Arkansas last year outscored their opponents by 87 in the first half, but got outscored by 100 in the second half. You might remember one of those in particular.

PICK: I don't feel great about TCU, but I feel even worse about Bielema's job security after this one. TCU covers.

Nebraska at Oregon (-13)
Factoid #1: Nebraska had to survive an incompletion on the final play of the game to escape Arkansas State last week. It scared Miami so badly, they backed out of their game against Arkansas State this week. That, or, you know, they needed to evacuate to avoid a potentially deadly and destructive natural disaster.
Factoid #2: Disney has revived Duck Tales, and it's actually pretty good! Unlike Oregon the last couple of years.

PICK: Willie Taggart still has some work to do, but I think Mike Riley's possibly in over his head. Oregon wins handily.

Auburn at Clemson (-6)
Factoid #1: After starting 12-2 as head coach of the Tigers, Gus Malzahn has gone 24-16 the last four years.
Factoid #2: After starting 19-15 as head coach of the Tigers, Dabo Swinney has gone 71-13 the last six years.

PICK: I think the line's a little skewed on this one. Clemson wins by a FG.

Oklahoma at Ohio State (-7)
Factoid #1: At 35 years old, Lincoln Riley is the youngest head coach in FBS.
Factoid #2: At 35 years old, Ohio State's J.T. Barrett is the oldest starting QB in FBS.

PICK: I'm not a believer in this year's OSU team. Oklahoma wins outright.

Georgia at Notre Dame (-5)
Factoid #1: Following a tip, the NCAA is investigating accusations of PED abuse at Georgia.
Factoid #2: I have a buddy who emigrated to the US from Ireland a couple of years ago. He and his family back home instantly adopted Notre Dame as their college football team. Seriously, you can't make this up.
PICK: Before last week I'd have said Georgia handily, but with Jacob Eason's health up in the air, I'll take Notre Dame to at least cover the spread.

Stanford at USC (-6)
Factoid #1: This is the first time in their last three meetings Stanford is an underdog to USC. For those of us who remember Walt Harris and Pete Carroll's days there, that's unthinkable.
Factoid #2: USC really struggled last week with Western Michigan before pulling away in the 4th quarter.

PICK: Stanford wins outright.

Utah at BYU (PICKEM)
Factoid #1: Utah is fast approaching VT-UVA status in their rivalry with BYU, having won the last 6 in a row and 11 of the last 14.
Factoid #2: BYU managed less than 100 yards of offense against LSU.

PICK: I have absolutely no idea why this line is even. I'd have said it's BYU fans betting on their team, but they don't really do that. Also, ^^ this image came up when I Googled "No Gambling" for some reason. Utah easily.

Remember, we're making our picks on CBSSports.com this week (LINKY HERE), though feel free to let everybody know what the correct answers will be in the comments.

Comments

Great to see this getting picked up! Wish I would've seen it last week.

I do miss the comments being the location of the pics though with people getting creative w/ pictures but the only constant in life is change.

Great to see people still putting in the picks on the comments as well.

Louisville -10 : Tarheels are going to have a really bad season
TCU -3 : Have a weird feeling about Big 12 narrative flipping this weekend
Oregon -13 : Willie Taggart is going to to get them rolling
Clemson -6 : Clemson is going to represent for the conference
Oklahoma +7 : Not a believer in JT Barrett and those tOSU DBs
Notre Dame -5 : Semi-ACC victory
Standford +6 : #MANBALL
Utah : No idea why this is a pick'em

Not a believer in JT Barrett Carrot

Is there anything specific we need to do on the CBSSports side to enable you to match our picks from Week 1 with our picks from this point forward? (Like use the same email we use here on TKP, for example.)

I'd say just change your name over there to what you're using here. It doesn't do that by default (it wants a real name), but you can change it after you register.

I got the following errors trying to change my first name to match my username here:
First name: "matt7" -> "Must contain only alphabetic characters."
Last name: (blank) -> "Last Name is a required field."

I think you're trying to change it via Account Settings, which it won't allow.

When you're on the home page for the Pickem, there should be an Options button up top. From there, you can change your name in the first box with no restrictions

Ah, ok thanks. Have a leg!

Beer of the Week: The Veil's Yella Lambz Lemonade Sour Ale

I just noticed the pose the Utah girl is doing. How does that not hurt... something?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

You smile through the pain. Although she's young and her joints are made of rubber instead of medical-grade metallic compounds so it probably doesn't, yet.

Speaking of smiling through the pain, I think I sprained an eyeball on the USC Song Girls pic.

Shouldn't these lines be to a .5 point so we don't end up with ties?

As far as picks:
Louisville - Purdue has impressed enough for me to change my mind. Looking forward to UNC getting pummeled at home in front of empty bleachers
Arkansas - I don't know anything about this game but am favoring the home underdog again
Nebraska - Although Nebraska struggled last week and Oregon ran away with it, they gave up 21 first half points to Southern Utah. I'm guessing Nebraska scores enough to cover.
Clemson - it's going to be a close game but I'm banking on Clemson D making some big plays and them surviving to win by a TD
Ohio State - my gut wants me to pick Oklahoma but my head informs me Oklahoma lost their top RBs and WRs from a team that lost decisively in Stillwater last year
Georgia - Not buying Notre Dame as Temple lost their coach, QB, and 5 all-conference performers. Georgia looked just as impressive against a dangerous App State team.
Stanford - Stanford is one of my sleeper picks for the CFP this season as they continue to be consistently underrated
Utah - not sure how good Utah will be this year but I do feel confident that BYU is not especially good

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinsku, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Louisville (-10)
UNC is still figuring things out on O and the D has taken steps back in coaching and the Heisman trophy winner is p good still

TCU (-4)
I am completely clueless on this game

Clemson (-6)
Talent, coaching, momentum all favor clemson. tho ... this is the best auburn team since the natty title game .... best game of the night

Ohio State (-7)
Urban's been in big games before, Lincoln hasn't and b10+4 > b12-2

Georgia (+5)
4-8

Stanford (+6)

Utah (PICKEM)
better talent and coaching, easy choice
