I just want the Flyers to win at least one against Pittsburgh. They've had our number this year and I'm not too hopeful.

The other series should be pretty amazing though. Ducks/sharks is always good. The Knights making a run would be crazy. The Avs top line against the preds defense will be a good matchup. Can't wait for tonight and I think there could be a few first round upsets *cough* Caps *cough*

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

As a caps fan who is tired of playing Pens in the second round (and losing lol)..... GO FLYERS!

***Got to beat CBJ first though

That Avs top line is stupid young too. Those guys might anchor that line for a long time.

Wow! The Redwings have REALLY fallen far.

As is tradition in D.C.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

This is a bitter pill for me. My Rangers, after a decade of being very good, culminating with those dreadful, vomit inducing-literally OT losses to the Kings in the Finals (seriously, I puked multiple times during game 2 and 3 due to anxiety), fell apart this year and basically sold off the core of those teams minus Lundqvist. Now they are rebuilding. My hope is, for the first time since the Rangers drafted Jean Ratelle in the 60's, they can final draft an elite homegrown NHL centerman. It is unthinkable that an NHL franchise could go 50 years and not draft a single legitimate number 1 center.

Sadly, reports yesterday indicated that the Rangers will sign Ilya Kovalchuk (did I say puke? I meant barf) and writers are mentioning John Taveras enough that maybe he wants to stay in NY but not play for a clownshow. But, those signings don't address the fundamental need for the Rangers to finally draft and develop their first legit young stars since Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, and Alexei Kovalev came up through the organization. I don't count Lundqvist because he was a late throw-away pick that Gordie Clark hit the lotto on.

So basically what I got from all that is that the Rangers are an organization that's only good for inducing vomiting.

For the last 24 years, yes. There have been good memories too...

And the one that hits me in the feels, Marty St. Louis scoring on Mothers Day right after his mom passed away.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Step's joy was great. Especially after I was living with a bunch of Caps fans and I just jumped up and yelled in excitement from the kitchen table (after being a bit of a grump following game 4).

Marty's goal is just so damn emotional. I've felt that pain before and little things like that help so much mentally. Also, Fleury sending the puck over to him knowing what that goal meant was one of the best pieces of sportsmanship/being a good human that you can see on the ice.

I cried. I am man enough to admit it.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Also, while I don't feel great about the Caps chances with an imperfect roster and a goalie controversy, I hope my friends who are Caps fans have a fun spring for a change.

while I don't feel great about the Caps chances

it's the playoffs....none of us feel great about their chances....especially if they face the pens in round 2.

Well it hasn't worked for the Caps with a perfect roster and no goalie controversy (although I think that's a bit overstated) maybe this will be the year!

The optimist person in me feels this way too. No one expected Caps to win division let along be the #1 seed. Even being that, I don't feel the high expectation at all.

Who knows, maybe Gruby can stand on his head and steal a couple games. But I fully expect a 6-7 game series with CBJ and another 2nd round exit to Pens.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I've actually enjoyed the season because I've had no expectations. It also helps that my 5 year old son has really gotten into hockey this year and we've been watching some of the games together.

I feel like Gruby can do it; he seems to show up in the big games.

I have grown more confident with Grubi as the season has gone along. He hasn't let the soft ones in as often as Holtby has this year. Can't save them all but can't have those back breakers either.

Round 1 of the NHL playoffs is one of the best opening rounds in sports.

The disparity between 1-8 is in each conference is considerable, but there are no cakewalks come the NHL playoffs.

I am a Bruins fan. I think both our GM and our head coach will be in the running for end of season awards.

This season however, has been an incredibly fun season to watch. The roster has a handful of well-established vets and then a whole slew of pups getting their feet wet and looking very promising. Our top defensive line has a 21 year age gap between them (Chara and McAvoy). They play a lot faster than previous teams I can remember, and I credit that mostly to the playing style of the young guys they have drafted over the last ~3 season and Cassidy's willingness to play them early.

At season start, I didn't expect them to even be contenders.

B's fan here as well. I used to be a season ticket-holder from 2003-2008, which were lean years for Boston hockey. They are much more fun to watch, and they could make a deep run.

Based on the prognostication they'll either fall to the Leafs in 7 or end up in the SC final.

The Flyers certainly did not cover themselves in glory against the Pens this season, but its playoff time. The last time the two teams faced off in the playoffs was a very memorable series.

I see the Pens taking it in 6 games, but Giroux is playing some of the best hockey of his career right now, so who knows. The Flyers have some good young players, and I wouldn't be completely surprised to see a Nolan Patrick or Travis Konecny have a bit of a coming out party.

I feel like the playoff experience in Vegas is probably amazing. Gotta hand it to that town, I didn't think hockey would make it there, but those fans have embraced them a bit. Also helps that they are really good.

Seems like any teams in Vegas could always get sufficient asses in seats because the opposing fans would relish a trip to Vegas.

Yep, that was the one game I was going to actually root and care. Up 2-0 and typical result. I'm not going through this bullshit again. Much like the Redskins, they are dead to me. I'd just as soon they get swept at this point.

It is amazing how I am not even mad about last night's Caps loss. In years past, I would be furious that they lost after letting go of a 2-0 lead and a 3-2 lead in the 3rd but now, its pretty numb to me. I will still get excited when they score and/or win but I finally don't lose any sleep after losses like last night.

Given Burky's and Wilson's were dumb, Caps lost the game during the 5 on 5 play.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

*sigh* it sucks being a Caps fan. Was at the game and dont know how we lost it while outshooting them 50-30 or something ridiculous like that.

Because that's what they do in the playoffs, it's been like this for decades...they can put the puck on net 100 times and still lose on a lucky redirect, bad turnover, or not clearing the zone during a power play. It's still a winnable series, but this is an all too familiar feeling!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

And as is tradition since 2010, my Canes have decided to trade pucks for putts so...

While I really enjoy watching hockey, I don't know a lot about it. With that being said, I am a Caps fan and will watch all of their playoff games after watching one or two regular season games. Can anyone spell out for me what the hell happens to this team in the playoffs every year? Every time I look at their record at the end of the regular season, it's one of the better records in the NHL. Every time I watch them in the playoffs, though, they struggle with whatever team they're playing in the first round that they supposedly should sweep, then get manhandled by the Penguins.

I try to compare this to the NBA since they also have an 82 game regular season, and the playoff format is the exact same. There isn't one team in the NBA that regularly has one of the best records in the league but always exits in the second round year after year, though. The Washington Capitals are truly one of professional sports' greatest enigmas to me, and if anyone can explain to me what happens to this team when April rolls around, I'm all ears (eyes, technically).

They choke. Kinda like a #1 overall seed losing to a 16 seed.

Hockey is very different from the NBA because each player has roughly the same skill level and there is not much separation between the best player on a team and the worst player. Also in hockey, a team can get outshot by 20, but still have a few well-placed shots or lucky bounces and blow a team out. In Basketball, because there is a high amount of constant scoring, luck is much less of a factor, which contributes to the higher seed almost always winning

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama

As a fellow caps fan, I feel your confusion and frustration.

This is what I have seen from the caps that have pit them in an 0-2 hole...

1) Silly/bad penalities, especially by Wilson. He HAS to be smarter. Literally took the same bad penalty in game 2 as he did in game 1. Burky's penalty in game 1 has no excuse. Horrible decision to try and chase down Seth Jones who is very good at handling the puck.

2) Failing to clear the puck on PK's and failing to exit the zone.

3) Getting beat on 5-5 play.

At the end of the day, this series could easily be 2-0 caps or minimum 1-1. As you probably know, luck plays a huge part with bounces, deflections, etc. Caps haven't gotten any so far. Caps had a great chance to win it yesterday with the final PP but couldn't get it done. This series isn't over but very close. We all know game 3 is must win, or then you can finally start dusting off the clubs.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The team lacks a killer instinct, at least for the past 10 years. Specifically Ovechkin and Backstrom. They have changed role players, goalies and coaches over the years, but same result. The constant? The core of Ovi and Backstrom.

I don't think it's something that they are going to learn either if he hasn't at this point.

This series is over.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

I agree... Definition of insanity...

With that being said, they need to blow this team up. I don't expect to go far and their playoff window with the current players who have been there long is closed after this year.

Going to be very hard to trade Ovechkin with his salary cap... maybe Vegas with McPhee there plus I feel Ovechkin would love living in Vegas. They should have the cap room to fit him too, doubtful though.

You can get a lot back for Backstrom as he is only 30 years old and has a very friendly cap hit (6.7 m) for his talents.

Trade Holtby or Gruby as one of them could be starters for other teams. With Copley and especially Samsanov waiting in the wings, they are loaded at the goalie position, prospect wise.

Don't sign Carlson. Love him but the money he is going to demand is going to be too much for the rebuild that Caps need.

The main guys I would keep and build around Wilson, Kuznetsov, Vrana, Burky, and Orlov unless you can get some kind of great return for any of them, though I would say Kuzy is untouchable imho.

Just checked the scores. Does not look like the Caps will make it to the second round this year.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Not so fast my friend

I'm thoroughly enjoying this Sharks-Ducks series. Sorensen, Karlson and Fehr on the fourth line seem like a significant depth improvement compared to previous years, Kane has been good, and other than the soft goal at the beginning of game 2, Jones has played really well. I'm curious to see what things will look like when Thornton comes back.

CBJ had them on the ropes in the 3rd, that was a pretty dominating period but Holtby kept them in... they came back out with some fight in the OT. Great win.

Welp....Dave Hakstol is not good. The Flyers' young talent is doing well in spite of him, not because of him. For a head coach, that's just not gonna cut it. Not likely we'd beat Pittsburgh anyway, but every loss was so disheartening.

As a Pens fan, I don't know this year. Murray looked awful yesterday, I'm hoping that's just an outlier. If Hagelin is out for an extended period we'll struggle on the PK. I say all of this, but I thought we had no chance at the Cup without Letang last year.

Rip his freaking head off!

Don't over think it. Pens have mind fucked the Caps and I don't expect any difference if they beat CBJ. The Caps players have admitted that it is a mental thing for them and that is the worst thing that could happen or even say lol. Caps are also not as talented as they were last year. It's hockey, so anything can happen, but I don't feel any better playing the Pens then I did last year.
