I just want the Flyers to win at least one against Pittsburgh. They've had our number this year and I'm not too hopeful.

The other series should be pretty amazing though. Ducks/sharks is always good. The Knights making a run would be crazy. The Avs top line against the preds defense will be a good matchup. Can't wait for tonight and I think there could be a few first round upsets *cough* Caps *cough*

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

As a caps fan who is tired of playing Pens in the second round (and losing lol)..... GO FLYERS!

That Avs top line is stupid young too. Those guys might anchor that line for a long time.

Wow! The Redwings have REALLY fallen far.

As is tradition in D.C.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

This is a bitter pill for me. My Rangers, after a decade of being very good, culminating with those dreadful, vomit inducing-literally OT losses to the Kings in the Finals (seriously, I puked multiple times during game 2 and 3 due to anxiety), fell apart this year and basically sold off the core of those teams minus Lundqvist. Now they are rebuilding. My hope is, for the first time since the Rangers drafted Jean Ratelle in the 60's, they can final draft an elite homegrown NHL centerman. It is unthinkable that an NHL franchise could go 50 years and not draft a single legitimate number 1 center.

Sadly, reports yesterday indicated that the Rangers will sign Ilya Kovalchuk (did I say puke? I meant barf) and writers are mentioning John Taveras enough that maybe he wants to stay in NY but not play for a clownshow. But, those signings don't address the fundamental need for the Rangers to finally draft and develop their first legit young stars since Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, and Alexei Kovalev came up through the organization. I don't count Lundqvist because he was a late throw-away pick that Gordie Clark hit the lotto on.

So basically what I got from all that is that the Rangers are an organization that's only good for inducing vomiting.

For the last 24 years, yes. There have been good memories too...

And the one that hits me in the feels, Marty St. Louis scoring on Mothers Day right after his mom passed away.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Step's joy was great. Especially after I was living with a bunch of Caps fans and I just jumped up and yelled in excitement from the kitchen table (after being a bit of a grump following game 4).

Marty's goal is just so damn emotional. I've felt that pain before and little things like that help so much mentally. Also, Fleury sending the puck over to him knowing what that goal meant was one of the best pieces of sportsmanship/being a good human that you can see on the ice.

I cried. I am man enough to admit it.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Also, while I don't feel great about the Caps chances with an imperfect roster and a goalie controversy, I hope my friends who are Caps fans have a fun spring for a change.

while I don't feel great about the Caps chances

it's the playoffs....none of us feel great about their chances....especially if they face the pens in round 2.

Well it hasn't worked for the Caps with a perfect roster and no goalie controversy (although I think that's a bit overstated) maybe this will be the year!

The optimist person in me feels this way too. No one expected Caps to win division let along be the #1 seed. Even being that, I don't feel the high expectation at all.

Who knows, maybe Gruby can stand on his head and steal a couple games. But I fully expect a 6-7 game series with CBJ and another 2nd round exit to Pens.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I've actually enjoyed the season because I've had no expectations. It also helps that my 5 year old son has really gotten into hockey this year and we've been watching some of the games together.

I feel like Gruby can do it; he seems to show up in the big games.

I have grown more confident with Grubi as the season has gone along. He hasn't let the soft ones in as often as Holtby has this year. Can't save them all but can't have those back breakers either.

Round 1 of the NHL playoffs is one of the best opening rounds in sports.

The disparity between 1-8 is in each conference is considerable, but there are no cakewalks come the NHL playoffs.

I am a Bruins fan. I think both our GM and our head coach will be in the running for end of season awards.

This season however, has been an incredibly fun season to watch. The roster has a handful of well-established vets and then a whole slew of pups getting their feet wet and looking very promising. Our top defensive line has a 21 year age gap between them (Chara and McAvoy). They play a lot faster than previous teams I can remember, and I credit that mostly to the playing style of the young guys they have drafted over the last ~3 season and Cassidy's willingness to play them early.

At season start, I didn't expect them to even be contenders.

B's fan here as well. I used to be a season ticket-holder from 2003-2008, which were lean years for Boston hockey. They are much more fun to watch, and they could make a deep run.

Based on the prognostication they'll either fall to the Leafs in 7 or end up in the SC final.

The Flyers certainly did not cover themselves in glory against the Pens this season, but its playoff time. The last time the two teams faced off in the playoffs was a very memorable series.

I see the Pens taking it in 6 games, but Giroux is playing some of the best hockey of his career right now, so who knows. The Flyers have some good young players, and I wouldn't be completely surprised to see a Nolan Patrick or Travis Konecny have a bit of a coming out party.

I feel like the playoff experience in Vegas is probably amazing. Gotta hand it to that town, I didn't think hockey would make it there, but those fans have embraced them a bit. Also helps that they are really good.

Seems like any teams in Vegas could always get sufficient asses in seats because the opposing fans would relish a trip to Vegas.

It is amazing how I am not even mad about last night's Caps loss. In years past, I would be furious that they lost after letting go of a 2-0 lead and a 3-2 lead in the 3rd but now, its pretty numb to me. I will still get excited when they score and/or win but I finally don't lose any sleep after losses like last night.

Given Burky's and Wilson's were dumb, Caps lost the game during the 5 on 5 play.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

*sigh* it sucks being a Caps fan. Was at the game and dont know how we lost it while outshooting them 50-30 or something ridiculous like that.

Because that's what they do in the playoffs, it's been like this for decades...they can put the puck on net 100 times and still lose on a lucky redirect, bad turnover, or not clearing the zone during a power play. It's still a winnable series, but this is an all too familiar feeling!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

And as is tradition since 2010, my Canes have decided to trade pucks for putts so...

While I really enjoy watching hockey, I don't know a lot about it. With that being said, I am a Caps fan and will watch all of their playoff games after watching one or two regular season games. Can anyone spell out for me what the hell happens to this team in the playoffs every year? Every time I look at their record at the end of the regular season, it's one of the better records in the NHL. Every time I watch them in the playoffs, though, they struggle with whatever team they're playing in the first round that they supposedly should sweep, then get manhandled by the Penguins.

I try to compare this to the NBA since they also have an 82 game regular season, and the playoff format is the exact same. There isn't one team in the NBA that regularly has one of the best records in the league but always exits in the second round year after year, though. The Washington Capitals are truly one of professional sports' greatest enigmas to me, and if anyone can explain to me what happens to this team when April rolls around, I'm all ears (eyes, technically).

Marshall University student.

They choke. Kinda like a #1 overall seed losing to a 16 seed.

Hockey is very different from the NBA because each player has roughly the same skill level and there is not much separation between the best player on a team and the worst player. Also in hockey, a team can get outshot by 20, but still have a few well-placed shots or lucky bounces and blow a team out. In Basketball, because there is a high amount of constant scoring, luck is much less of a factor, which contributes to the higher seed almost always winning

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama
- Mike Burnup

As a fellow caps fan, I feel your confusion and frustration.

This is what I have seen from the caps that have pit them in an 0-2 hole...

1) Silly/bad penalities, especially by Wilson. He HAS to be smarter. Literally took the same bad penalty in game 2 as he did in game 1. Burky's penalty in game 1 has no excuse. Horrible decision to try and chase down Seth Jones who is very good at handling the puck.

2) Failing to clear the puck on PK's and failing to exit the zone.

3) Getting beat on 5-5 play.

At the end of the day, this series could easily be 2-0 caps or minimum 1-1. As you probably know, luck plays a huge part with bounces, deflections, etc. Caps haven't gotten any so far. Caps had a great chance to win it yesterday with the final PP but couldn't get it done. This series isn't over but very close. We all know game 3 is must win, or then you can finally start dusting off the clubs.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The team lacks a killer instinct, at least for the past 10 years. Specifically Ovechkin and Backstrom. They have changed role players, goalies and coaches over the years, but same result. The constant? The core of Ovi and Backstrom.

I don't think it's something that they are going to learn either if he hasn't at this point.

This series is over.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

I agree... Definition of insanity...

With that being said, they need to blow this team up. I don't expect to go far and their playoff window with the current players who have been there long is closed after this year.

Going to be very hard to trade Ovechkin with his salary cap... maybe Vegas with McPhee there plus I feel Ovechkin would love living in Vegas. They should have the cap room to fit him too, doubtful though.

You can get a lot back for Backstrom as he is only 30 years old and has a very friendly cap hit (6.7 m) for his talents.

Trade Holtby or Gruby as one of them could be starters for other teams. With Copley and especially Samsanov waiting in the wings, they are loaded at the goalie position, prospect wise.

Don't sign Carlson. Love him but the money he is going to demand is going to be too much for the rebuild that Caps need.

The main guys I would keep and build around Wilson, Kuznetsov, Vrana, Burky, and Orlov unless you can get some kind of great return for any of them, though I would say Kuzy is untouchable imho.

As a Pens fan, I don't know this year. Murray looked awful yesterday, I'm hoping that's just an outlier. If Hagelin is out for an extended period we'll struggle on the PK. I say all of this, but I thought we had no chance at the Cup without Letang last year.

Rip his freaking head off!

Don't over think it. Pens have mind fucked the Caps and I don't expect any difference if they beat CBJ. The Caps players have admitted that it is a mental thing for them and that is the worst thing that could happen or even say lol. Caps are also not as talented as they were last year. It's hockey, so anything can happen, but I don't feel any better playing the Pens then I did last year.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Any update on Malkin for round 2? I saw he missed game 6.

@sthvt

I heard it was a true gametime decision. I imagine he will be playing by the time this series starts.

Rip his freaking head off!

Assuming the Caps close out the Jackets in one of these next 2 games (which is quite possibly one of the most dangerous and reckless assumptions of all time), I honestly think this would be their best chance to take down the Pens of the 14313473 times they've played in the second round. The Caps, as we all know, love to dick off in the first round and play at least two too many games before facing the Pens, whereas the Pens usually sweep or win in five. The Pens actually went to six this time around, though, and, as deathrow said, Murray didn't look too good yesterday, whereas Holtby has looked solid in the three games that he has played.

But, again, it's the Washington Capitals in the second round against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It's like trying to figure out when to pick UVA to beat VT in football again. I simply won't do it until it actually happens. I think the Pens take it in 7.

Excited to be playing at home with the series tied, but I am very concerned about our defensemen situation. Paul Martin has been a pretty big liability, only played 10 minutes in a 2OT game last game, and is inexplicably active tonight. There's a ton of pressure on Vlassic, Braun, and Burns, and if they have to play 40 minutes a night we won't make it very far.

I assume this is towards the no goal call that could have been called a goal in caps/pens game 2. Here is the video for what you are referring to...

This is how I see it...

If it was called a goal originally, I think they keep it a goal. But since there wasn't conclusive evidence that it was over the line, they kept it a no goal.

Maybe they took into account what the video shows. What I also think they took into account was the ice shavings that could have made it look like there was ice between puck and red line. I don't know but this video is very educational, at least for me.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

FWIW I thought it was a goal, but seeing the posted video and ice shavings, I can see why they decided there wasn't conclusive evidence to overturn it.

Like I said, if they called it a goal originally, then I think they keep it a goal. I am just glad it wasn't a goal that tied or gave the Pens the lead where that would have been brutal for Pittsburgh. Sure, it could have it changed the course of the game but you'll never know how differently it would have turned out.

I can't find the tweet but there is video of Sidney Crosby looking like he spit in the direction of a Caps player. But it's Wilson who is the dirty player. *eye roll*

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

Never understood the mindset that it has to be one vs. the other... yeah, spitting at someone is dirty, shitty and disgusting, but that doesn't make the Wilson hit any less dirty... so, yes, Wilson is still a dirty player.

Bacon strips &
bacon strips &
bacon strips &

I mean, the hit's first contact is shoulder to shoulder, but shrug. The main point is that it's one versus the other because Wilson gets penalties simply for an old reputation. For example in the spitting video, Wilson got a penalty, not the guy who spit. Crosby obviously gets every break because he is the golden child. It's infuriating.

Quite simply, nah, you don't break someone's jaw by hitting them in the shoulder, and the replay from behind Wilson is quite clear.

And it can be one vs. the other to you, but one player's antics in one instance doesn't change a completely separate event.

How much more would you like for Wilson to lean over? Not his fault 46's butt puckered so much. Wilson is 4 inches taller. Calling this hit dirty isn't fair. Unfortunate result, yes, but it's hockey.

You do realize that the shoulder is three dimensional, right? The hit's first contact is on the inside part of his shoulder, and I think it's fairly obvious.

Fair enough. I'm obviously biased, but I still think the picture is pretty clear.

I can't stand either team, but I wouldn't say fan lenses. The hit live and from the picture looked fairly clear to me. As mentioned, Wilson is a lot bigger than the guy. That's...ummm...why size in hockey can be an important asset. Both skates firmly on the ice, head up.

The end result doesn't mean the hit itself was dirty. In the playoffs, if you get a chance to make that hit, you do it IMO.

Unless his shoulder is above his head, that picture proves my point, lol.

I don't think he should be suspended because it was initially shoulder to shoulder but since the the NHL Players Safety already called it a illegal check (which I don't know why they would since there was no penalty on the play) then I think Wilson will get a suspension. IF there was a penalty on the play, then it is ok for the NHLPS to call it that.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Oh he hit the head in the follow through, but first contact was shoulder to shoulder. But the league will decide who is right. Hopefully they review Crosby spitting and the slashing on Ovi after the goal too.

Hopefully so, because I'm not defending one action just because another happened.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Of course my wife isn't thrilled with watching hockey and the Pens went up 3-2 so I turned the channel telling myself I'll feel better for not watching them lose. Plus I couldn't even stand the crowd to watch. But then I see them pull out the W. I'm still not gonna watch the rest of the series though. Too much heartache and it's the Pens. I'll watch again if they win the series. Otherwise same old story.

I'm on the same boat. I watched the first two games the Caps lost to CBJ and I was like fuck this, same shit, different year kind of mood. Haven't watched a full game since and won't until they can prove to me that they can finally get over the Pittsburgh hump.

Coincidentally, they play well when I don't watch lol.

I am a Pens fan but this may be Washington's year. We don't have the depth we used to (for obvious reasons). Part of me is kind of pulling for the Caps. It's weird to say because of the rivalry but it'd be cool for them to finally break through and for Ovevhkin to have that for his legacy.

CAPS SUCK ODOYLL RULES. GO PENS

Kinda scared to ask, but any Predators fans here?

I thought the penalty against Subban late in the third should have been called embellishment, and I think that, and losing Ellis, during the Following power play sealed the game for the Jets. Frustrating lose last night.

Also, I trust the Preds to come and take back a game in the 3rd, more then to hang onto an early lead. Thoughts?

I root for the Caps too, but during the main season, TV networks here in North East Alabama (AKA Tenn Valley) Doesn't cover the Caps, and the Preds are a pretty awesome team with great fans.

Wilson is averaging one injury that is to the head a game and y'all are arguing over if sid possibly spitting on someone is comperable?
There is a reason why wilson has the most penalty minutes and why he is constantly talked about for "borderline" dirty hits: it's because he is a dirty player. That bullshit shouldn't be allowed on the ice, period.

I bet the caps fans here had no issue with the Logan Thomas/Zumwalt hit either...

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

Maybe the Penguins players shouldn't be so physically and emotionally fragile (Spitting? I mean really? What a baby.) Two hits, two extended looks, no penalties (because they were clean hits, violent, but clean). This is hockey, it is a contact sport.

Also why would Tom Wilson change when the NHL tells him he doesn't have to change? 5 FULL NHL SEASONS, ZERO SUSPENSIONS.

One more time for the people in the back:

5 FULL NHL SEASONS, ZERO SUSPENSIONS.

To me it is a NHL problem looking at what Ken Dryden is doing for CTE in hockey has been really interesting how combative he has been with Bettman over trying to get rule changes made.

...That's what Maryland does.

I don't give a damn what the fans think cause, quite frankly, I know what the fans want better than they do.

He was suspended for 4 or 5 games at the begin of the year this year.

Also, very relevant to the discussion, is this video from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

how does Wilson's hit differ from the first one they show (at 1:06), or really any of them. Is Wilson's worse than Hornquist's at 2:07? I'm interested to hear what the rationale is if they suspend him given I think there are other hits in their own video that are worse.

Wasn't he suspended in the preseason and not the regular season? Am I wrong? I tried to look, but there's three pages of different outlets talking about the possibility and no historical articles on a suspension.

Yes, he was suspended 2 games in the preseason and then, about 2 weeks later, he got 4 games to open the regular season.

OK gotcha, the suspension came from preseason play.

I am a life long Pens fan and I don't have an issue with Wilson's hits. Now, my response would be to retaliate in any way the players see fit on Washington's star players, including some high hits from our 6'7 defenseman, but I grew up watching hockey in the 90s haha. These event should be settled with Pens plauers attempting to leave caps players teeth on the ice.

Caps fan here, and you're right. The Zumwalt hit was also clean. Just like Wilson's. Just cause your guy got hurt doesn't make it an illegal hit.

is there supposed to be a /s on the zumwalt hit?? That thing was in no way clean. He launched himself, leaving the ground hit LT in the chin with the crown of his helmet.....pretty clear targeting....LT getting hurt is irrelevant to the hit being legal or not.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Nope. No /s. Sucks LT3 got hurt, but I have no problem with the hit. Zumwalt's feet never left the ground, and the contact doesn't appear to be in any way helmet to helmet. Refs got it right by not calling targeting, and I don't think even the unnecessary roughness call was justified. The hit was within the letter of the law.

I know I'm in a distinct minority on this site on this topic. I don't care. I will die on this hill.

Just because it was clean, doesn't mean he should have done it.

He didn't launch himself, both feat were on the ground when he made contact with logan. Now did the crown of his helmet hit Logan in the chin? Yes, but the angle he hit him with his shoulder, his helmet was going to be in the vicinity of Logan's chin no matter what.

3 game suspension seems harsh for not even a penalty hit, also has everyone just forget the hit geuntzel threw on wilson when he was falling down towards the boards where his neck got messed up a few minutes after wilsons hit? Thats what hes gonna get for his reputation just let him keep playing give him a one game suspension 3 games halfway in a 7 game series is garbage. Thats just hockey shame to see them throwing that heavy a suspension in the playoffs

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

There were growing voices saying that the NHL was being soft on player safety and so I think they decided to make an example of Wilson to try to kill that. Wilson hasn't done himself any favors with the reputation he has made for himself and having questionable (I wouldn't say dirty) hits in back to back games, but I think this suspension has more to do with how the NHL wants to be viewed on these matters than anything Wilson did.

It really feels like the NHL is watching the NFL and trying to keep pace the focus on safety and head injuries, but they're just stupid in how they enforce it. This play isn't a defenseless receiver sort of situation. Aston-Reeves had his head up, sees Wilson coming, and plenty of time (in hockey terms) to get out of the way or at least limit the hit. Instead he chose to take it on and it was an unfortunate impact that caused an injury. I expected he'd get a game because the Pitt side was so vocal in demanding it and because Wilson gets treated like he's a dirty player. 3 games for something that people (analysts and other unbiased 3rd party hockey people) still can't even agree on is absurd.

Taylor... looking desperately...now throws it DEEP..HAS A MAN OPEN! CAUGHT! DANNY COALE! ALL THE WAY! OUT OF BOUNDS, at the three...

Yeah I could be ok (I'd still be bitter) with a game since the guy got hurt when the hit deflected from the shoulder to the clavicle area to the head. But three games is egregious and overly punitive. There are plenty of third party hockey talking heads who disagree with three games (Jeremy Roenick, Billy Jaffe, etc.), and this just screams of punishment based on public outrage and making an example of Wilson.

So I'll be forward in saying im not a die hard hockey fan but I always watch the playoffs for the fun it can be as my main sport is the real football(not american) and the one thing i despise in that sport is the diving, pansy ass flopping to the ground and rolling around like they just got shot. Not that this is relative to hockey but in a sense I dont watch hockey because I love watching ice skating, not saying let them fight in the pits but dont try and take away what draws the views. Id say this was a poorly rushed decision and cant imagine the complaints from the pitt end didnt push this easier.

Being a Pats fan every year im reminded of how the rest of the world feels in regards to Brady and Belichick since every year I learn to despise Crosby and Malkin and co just the same

I'm trying to think of the CFB equivalent to the Caps. Best I can do is Kelly era Oregon. Based on the regular season they look like a championship winner on paper. But when they play a well coached, battle tested team for the big trophy they fall apart.

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

I dont think they played all that poorly last night they just didnt get the bounces but they still have a great oppurtunity tomorrow night to get a big game in, this is the most optimistic I've felt ina series with the pens in years.

Since 1998, not even close....

The Vikings alone have been to 4 conference finals since 1998... 1998, 2000, 2009, & 2017. The Wild made the conference finals in 2003. The Twins made the conference/AL Championship in 2001. The Timberwolves made the conference finals in 2004.

The San Diego are might have a close argument, but they only have 1 team to compare now that the Chargers are in LA but I will still entertain them. Padres made and won conference finals in 2008. The (used to be) San Diego Chargers made conference finals in 2007.

As of yesterday, all 4 DC sports had zippie.

Doc said the Caps were ready to run onto the ice 5 minutes before overtime had begun. For the first time in the Ovechkin era, they finally looked like a team ready to step on the other team's throat and close them out in the playoffs. One thing that worries me about the next round (aside from Tampa Bay being a great team) is the fact that I feel like the Caps wanted to beat the Penguins just to prove to the world that they could beat the Penguins rather than to get to the Eastern Conference Finals, if that makes any sense. I'm worried they might not be mentally ready for the conference finals. Then again, they've proven me wrong all throughout the playoffs from coming back down 0-2 to Columbus to finally ending the D.C. sports curse and getting the Pens monkey off their back. We shall see.

Marshall University student.
Virginia Tech fanatic.

I could really see this going in 2 ways. The Caps spent so much physical and mental energy in beating Pitt and getting that monkey off their back that they have nothing left against Tampa and they get steamrolled in the ECF, like when the Canes beat NJ and Boston each in 7 in 2009 and got thoroughly trashed against Pitt in the ECF. Or, they got the monkey off their back and they are on a mission to destroy everyone from here on out, like how the Red Sox blasted the Cardinals in 2004 after the comeback against the Yankees in the ALCS.

I'm hoping for, and banking on the latter. Right now in sports it seems like everything we thought we knew is getting erased. The RedSox and Cubs would never win the World Series. Cleveland was perpetually cursed and would never win anything. Clemson would never stop Clemsoning. A 'little guy' like Villanova would never win the NCAA Tournament again. The Eagles would never win the Super Bowl. A 16 would never beat a 1 in the men's tournament. We're on a groundswell of curses being lifted, and Washington winning this year would continue the trend. It just feels like their year, and (arguably outside of all of Canada) their fans probably deserve it the most. I know that's who I'm cheering for the rest of the way.

That's a definite big one. Though, by just being not terrible they've completely bucked the trend this year. Reminds me a lot of when Jacksonville and Carolina came into the NFL and made the NFC and AFC Championship Games in Year 2, but far more sped up (and albeit far more impressive given the number of games and the lack of 'cooling off', better proving how good a team they are).

I remember after the Expansion Draft people were seriously wondering and claiming that McPhee was setting them up to intentionally tank for a while to stock up on elite picks. Sounds silly looking back on it.

My friend did some (in the loosest of loose terms) work for the Knights ahead of the expansion draft which is why I'm a fan. Their success is partially based on this expansions rules being more favorable and obviously the depth top to bottom. They're still competing above where they should but the people that expected them to be last in the league were taking crazy pills. They have too much talent that was being sheltered by a lack of minutes. Not to mention getting an all-star/potential HOF goalie helps.

Basically he made an excel program that took advanced statistics and essentially made an adjusted Goals above replacement stat (similar to WAR in baseball). Then it eliminated all the protected players and optimized the best team (forwards, defensemen, and goalies) from an analytics sense.

Through some connection with the Brandon wheat Kings my friend got the program to the assistant Gm of the Knights and their head of player development. They had a few back and forths asking my friend to tweak it a little bit, add a way to factor in age potential, cap value, market value, stuff like that. The program ended up being really customizable by the end which they thought was cool.

Anyway, Vegas ended up holding on to it and said it was interesting but they had their way of doing things and probably wouldn't use it. Regardless, they were nice enough and cool enough to take my friend seriously.

They didn't have the best record in the East for just showing up. They are a very good team and DEADLY on the PP. Vasy played a very good game as well, so credit to him. Worst game for Holtby for sure.

I didn't think Caps played all that bad tbh. Shot themselves in the foot with all the silly penalties. Problem with them playing at home is sometimes they get cute in front of the fans and don't make the simple plays/passes. Hopefully Trotz sees this and will make adjustments.

I have a lot of confidence they will come back tomorrow with more discipline play and better defense.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I mean I agree. I didn't think they'd get a sweep but they just looked 180 to me from the first two games. Surprised we dominated them so bad in the first two games and hope we see some more fire and aggression the rest of the way.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

I want controlled aggression and fire last night was too much stupid silly penalties stuff that killed any shot at that game you cant give them that many PP or youll lose we need far more discipline tomorrow night or well go to tampa 2-2, Eller spent most of the second period in the box for dumb decisions that put the game out of reach.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah I'm not saying to the point where you're just getting penalized the whole time but the first two games they were all over the puck and flying to chase it down. I didn't see that last night.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

Yea I hear ya. But I think we were also surprised on how much we dominated them on 5v5 for the first two games. I think giving them those two PP goals was their downfall. Caps play soooo much better when they aren't playing from behind right out of the gate. Hopefully they can net the first one tomorrow and get this to 3-1.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I didn't think Caps played all that bad tbh. Shot themselves in the foot with all the silly penalties.

I think that I would agree with you for the most part, except things definitely turned after they let in the 2nd PP goal.

Up to that point, I thought the Caps were still the better team at even strength as they had been in the first two games. After that 2nd goal though, the Caps seemed sloppy with the puck and Tampa just looked like they wanted it more than the Caps did.

But yes, dumb penalties were definitely the difference, since Tampa hasn't looked all that comfortable unless they have a man advantage.

Yea I agree, once they scored they 2nd PP goal, I knew this wasn't going to be the Caps' night.

Yup Eller getting back in the box just like the last game and vasilevsky is starting to be hard to beat unlike the first two games

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yes they are but that second period was much better. For some reason this feels like one of those games they should win after watching that high energy second period but I'm full of anxiety they will lose it.

Lars Eller is single handedly killing the caps how many goals do they have on power plays from his dumb ass the last two games

Five penalties and four goals on those, two tonight.

This loss is all on him.

Yup if I was ovi I'd be having a word with him they out played Tampa but kept giving their killer special teams opportunity to be in the game he single handedly has killed their momentum

If I was Trotz he would be benched the rest of the series.

Eller plays WAY too large of a role on this team to be scratched. Moved down the lines, maybe, but benched? Get outta here.

Right. As was said below it's easier said than done to just bench him, but he's got to get his head straight. The core group finally seems to have the right attitude, and this guy's taking terrible penalties that are gifting a dangerous team games.

If this goes the way of the Columbus series except it's us on the losing end I'm gonna be so pissed.

Caps once again dominated 5v5 play. If they can just stay out of the box, and thats a big IF because they seem like they cant.... there is a good chance they would be up 3-1 or better now.

I will say though, Kempny's pass was lazy and inexcusable, especially for the magnitude of last night's game. Once I saw they turned it over, I knew a goal would be coming.

Game 5 tonight. Limit Eller penalties and Kempney turnovers for optimal results. Here we go...

Queue the meltdown in 3... 2... 1...

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

Caps saved their most epic meltdown for last apparently.

After all the printed words about how this team was exorcising the demons, this is about to become a huge choke job.

Oh man I haven't even turned the game on yet cause I've been busy around the house.

I've looked all over the map, and I cannot find Tampa Bay, WS or Las Begas, ND.

Weird.

We put the K in Kwality

Alright, made it three rounds and we finally got a game 7 for the Caps.... Cannot have a playoffs without a Capitals game 7.

1) How's everyone feeling?
2) Where you watching?
3) What's on the menu?
4) Do the Caps finally make it to Stanley Cup for first time in 20 years?

For me:
1) Nervous but a little more excited with a touch of optimism
2) At home by myself with one eye open ;)
3) Wings and copious amounts of alcohol/beer
4) I want to say yes but I am not sure.... Might need to lay an emotional hedge bet.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

1) Feeling pretty good actually. This is just another line in road where the Caps need to break the monkey on their back. First it was the Pens, now it's all the ex-Rangers and a game seven. Hopefully after that it's curse-ception by beating an ex-GM who was fired during the "curse".

2) Home.

3) Just had wisdom teeth removed, so prolly something soft.

4) I think we do, but I've been disappointed plenty of times before.

very nervous, and its a growing feeling. I'm anxious to see how Tampa starts the game. How does our defense handle pucks dumped in behind them? How they play with their backs to forecheckers. Is there panic? Do the refs let them play?

I'll be at home. menu? who can eat at a time like this. I will drink when its over. I just sit there, rocking, in the fetal position with a full "light-up-when-the-caps-score" Budweiser cup.

Hmmmmmm Budweiser...

So far in this series, I've watched all the cap's losses and not watched any of their wins, so my answer to #2 is I'm not watching it. Going to be very difficult to distract myself from checking the score every 30 seconds, but I'll manage.

I'm as old as the Capitals franchise, and have been a fan since I was a little kid. Sadly, I've seen this movie so many times I've got the ending memorized. So, while my heart says that things might truly be different this time around, my head says it's only a matter of time before they shit the bed, because that's what the Crapitals do in the playoffs.

I'll be watching at home with with Mrs. Freefall, who has learned to love hockey and hate that the Caps are kinda like the NHL's version of the Hokies. Nothing special on the menu, but I'll probably crack open that bottle of Larceny I got for my birthday.

As for the outcome, since it's a beautiful day outside and there's a three-day weekend coming up, I'm gonna channel Oddball and say something righteous and beautiful. The Caps find a way to get it done and make it to the SCF!

2. Haven't quite decided. I've been mulling over the Capital One Arena Watch Party.

4. If they continue to be as physical as they were in game six they have a real shot. I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

I feel good about the game tonight as long as we dont start stupidly slow like last game in tampa we need or D men to start fast like game 6 or were done also need to limit stupid power plays and avoid giving tampa a shot at theire special plays thats the biggest reason tampa are in this 5v5 I feel good seeing how the caps played game 6, smart and hard hitting with a lovely touch of desperation to push em a bit over

The caps must play with the same sense of urgency and desperation as game 6. That was one hell of a hockey game and performance. MUST bring that intensity tonight.

I'll share my words of encouragement with the Caps fans for tonight. Even as a Flyers fan, I really have no particular dislike for the Caps. It's the Penguins I can't stand and to a lesser extent Tampa Bay (going back to when their sports teams beat us in the 2004 ECF and before that the NFC championship game to close down the Vet)

But to share my experience watching the Eagles this past season, a fan base that was raised on "ok yeah...but they are gonna fuck up soon" mentality, I watched the playoff run and never once felt they were going to lose. It was the oddest, most unexplainable confidence.

I feel the Caps win tonight. Hey showed me something in Game 6 that I didn't think they had frankly.

I loved the intro. If over-the-top theatrics doesn't showcase what Vegas is all about, I don't know what does. It showcased the character of the hosting city and I'd love to see more stuff like that.

Absolute murder Reeves got away with for the fourth goal glad to see the caps can hang with Vegas just need to go out and get the next game

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Caps fans will complain a lot in the next couple days about the cross check on Carlson that led to Vegas' fourth goal, and they have every right to do so, but how about the inability to get the puck out of their zone or even from out in front of net? Kempny whiffed the puck twice clearing it next to net which led to a goal. Smith-Pelly had a horrible clear 3 feet away from the blue line that led to a goal. For as good as Holtby has been, he needs to start deflecting shots wide rather than right in the middle. With the way Fleury has played throughout the playoffs, I'm not sure the Caps will get another opportunity at scoring four goals (should have been five, but Lars Eller continues to hurt the Caps). It's important that they tighten up defensively and steal game 2 in Vegas because their home performances haven't given me any reason to be optimistic about them winning games 3 and 4 if they fall behind 0-2.

For as good as Holtby has been, he needs to start deflecting shots wide rather than right in the middle.

You are spot on. I can't remember the number of times I was shouting "get it out of there!!!"

If they're gonna complain about that cross check, are they gonna be honest about the latest dirty hit by Wilson on Marchessault? Puck was long gone, deep into the zone by the time Wilson got there on that one...

Bacon strips &

You mean the hit by Wilson that got him a penalty instead of a goal?

Caps fan here, yes it was late. The Reaves cross check was blatant. Marsshsault got away with a cross check to the small of the back on Oshie. Wilson's hit was very late. Orlov got a cross check to the face, eller delivered one 20 seconds into the game.

They mentioned it postgame on nbscn and i'm sure many other places, but I think the refs let them play too much and it escalated higher every shift.

VB born, class of '14

agreed, looked a lot like an elimination game, not a game 1. needs to be cleaned up for at least the next couple of matches or we're gonna risk losing crucial players on both teams before we even get to those later games.

Bacon strips &

Way I see it the hit from Wilson was for the late as hell cross check by Marsshsault on Oshie when he was down after that late scramble so I had no problem with someone getting back at him for that but wilson was stupid going that late but it was funny seeing vegas cry wolf when theyve been dirty as well but the reaves cross check had me just like the post game guys going nuts.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Well I mean the complaint is valid since, you know, one resulted in a penalty and the other didn't....

Slept on it... terrible no call on the Reaves hit that changed the game. Tom Wilson's hit was definitely late and he deserved the box, but at that point, he was playing BS police. They needed to make a call on one of the crosschecks or after play extra curricular cheap shots.

That being said, I'm very comfortable where the Caps stand after that game. They showed up on the road for a game 1 and we looked like the better team for the majority of the game.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Interesting that you feel like we looked to be the better team the majority of the game. Obviously that's a subjective statement, so by no means am I saying you're wrong (definitely hope you're not!). I just felt like it was a very evenly matched game. Both teams seemed to have runs where they looked unstoppable.

I know this, we have got to figure out how to better exit the defensive zone if we want to win the cup. A few of their goals went in right after we had an opportunity to clear and couldn't get it done.

I also felt like the Caps were the better team. Of all the Caps' goals, I only felt like one was a junk goal, and that was the one Fleury hit in with his skate. The rest were a result of methodical passing and skilled finishing (especially the Carlson goal after giving and going with Oshie). I felt like 4 of Vegas' goals were from the Caps failing to clear the puck. It's like in basketball when you grab a rebound and everyone on the other team is reaching and smacking your wrists till you turn it over before you can outlet to somebody. Caps have been very good at clearing the puck and starting odd-man breaks all throughout the playoffs, and they didn't get those in game 1 but still scored 4 goals. Also, Vegas has yet to fade any adversity. Keep in mind, this is a team of players who weren't deemed good enough to be protected by their original teams. They have been very good, and I'm not going to take anything away from their success, but if the Caps make them sweat, it'll be interesting to see how they handle it. Caps have faced plenty of adversity.
