Urban Meyer retiring after the Rose Bowl

ESPN Article

It looks like Urban Meyer is retiring after this season. Any thoughts on what this means for the future of Ohio State? Will Meyer pop up as head coach somewhere else next season?

I do believe Uran is done. His stress level is going to kill him on the sidelines if he continues. Time to really do what he said he would when leaving Florida...relax. Although, in all truth, I doubt he can do it. One of the guys on Gameday told the story of when he was between UF and anOSU at the National title game, and Urban mumbles "I have to get back on the sidelines..."

Maybe we could get him as OC /s

Retiring

I may be naive but I doubt it. I doubt he coaches at all, and if he does, probably will be several years down the road.

Promise?

Bama or LSU by 2020.

I see your Bama or LSU and raise you Notre Dame

Notre Dame is his dream job, or at least he has said he would coach there before. My money would be on ND if he were to pop out of retirement in a few years.

or USC

Florida State in a few years?

Earlier this season I said this would happen but that he would go to Texas. Texas had a pretty good season so that option may not be on the table.

it's what he does when the going gets rough.

I don't think he coaches elsewhere next year, probably in 2020 though

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

He'll have plenty of time for sad pizzas now

Oh sh!t maybe he'll go to Louisville after the AppSt coach moves up. Free Papa Johns.

As far as future of Ohio State, I guess we'll see if Ryan Day can lead a legitimate blue blood program moving forward.

In 2009, Meyer's Florida Gators made it to the SEC Championship and lost the game. Meyer releases a statement the next day saying he had "health issues" and it taking a leave of absence. He returns in March, coaches the Gators to a 7-5 record, and announces retirement.

In 2018, the Zach Smith stuff happens, Meyer is suspended 4 games, returns to OSU. He loses big time to Purdue on the road, and released a statement that he has "health issues." His Buckeyes miss the College Football Playoff and he announces retirement 36 hours later.

The dude is just retiring away from his problems. Good riddance man.

Yep, in this context his actions seems soft, and that softness is reflected in his football team. Talented as hell, capable of rolling you, but as soon as adversity pops up (Iowa last year, Purdue this year) they fold.

There was plenty of smoke around that Florida program before Urban retired. A lot of the problems that came to light at Ohio State ended up starting down in Gainesville.

And will keep following him to his next job, and the next, and the next....

Co-eds?

Very true, and there was smoke this season too - Ari Wasserman published an article earlier this year on The Athletic that there were initial discussions of how to get Ryan Day to be the coach in waiting.

I have to wonder if the smoke was - more or less - 'planted' to make the story of him "retiring" justifiable.

USC after a season off. Maybe Notre Dame if Kelly gets destroyed in the playoffs and doesn't make it the following year.

Could see USC after another year with Helton. SC has all the resources to run the PAC-12 with the right coach.

Eff urban and his rural ass!

Is he 110% sure he's really retiring....or is this just a 100% sure decision?

do i hear 800%

With our luck, his sorry ass will end up commentating

He did that when he retired the first time. It was not great. I felt like I was simultaneously at the DMV and watching a football game.

Leonard. Duh.

They'll really get after ya

Ding ding ding

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I don't know if that will be next year though. USC has got to get rid of A LOT of dead weight in their athletic department. I can't imagine Meyer, or anybody like him wanting to come in and work for the Pat Haden/Lynn Swann dumpster fire.

I can't imagine USC not crossing anybody's mind however. That could be the best gig in college football if they could just get somebody to keep the car between the ditches.

Leonard. Duh.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I will also add FSU as a destination after a season off. If Taggert sucks again next season, that's a good place for Urban to land.

I dunno man, ole sharkface may die without ever beating Urban. Maybe even without ever beating anOSU if Day can continue the tradition.

Since the OSU Board of Directors claimed Urban forgets things during important times, do you think he will forget that he retired and want to come back?

Except Ryan Day is taking over at OSU

Please no, not to my Packers.

That team sure did suck last night. They just plain sucked! I've seen teams suck before, but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

On the one hand, I dislike Meyer. However, it would be crazy if he just kept jumping conferences and winning titles every few years. Already dominated the SEC and B1G. I bet he goes to USC. Pac-12 is weak and Meyer could have USC back to their former glory within the next 5 years.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

true story... for the longest time I thought this had to be from an outtake of SlapShot, because it looked like he was wearing a Syracuse (Philly Flyers) jersey

So what new scandal is going to pop up at aOSU in a month? Hasn't that been the case after all his "retirements?"

Remember that his predecessor was also shown the door because of a scandal... seems to be a recurring theme at tOSU.... lack of institutional control???

Edit: Luke Fickell actually preceded him in an interim capacity, bridging the gap between Tressel and Meyer.

Would he like to do a stint as our Recruiting Coordinator?

I remember watching his 2004 Utah offense and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. It just looked different than the stuff everyone else was running. I think, other than 1995 Nebraska, that Utah team is the only team in like 30 years to go undefeated while beating everyone by double digits.

The most remarkable thing about his tenure at Ohio State for me was the fact he was there for 7 years and I can vividly remember every single loss he had there. Going 81-9 over 7 seasons is just bananas.

Imagine going 81-9 over the course of 7 seasons and still not being THE dominant head coach of your era.

He is going to "retire" to recover until Saban retires and then offer to coach Bama.

Bama very well could go after Dabo. He is an alum, after all.

This. From what I understand their boosters have been actively planning for this. I can't say how close my source is to the actual truth, but this seems way more than plausible.

Count me as one looking forward to the day that Clemson rejoins the ranks of coaching instability

Never thought I'd miss Tommy Bowden...

I think Bama wants Dabo, but unless he's unhappy at Clemson (and I don't think he is), I don't see him leaving.

Twitter me

Bama could probably give him 11 or 12 million reasons to consider.

Clemson might be able to come within a couple million of that in a couple of years. Their revenue isn't as large as Bama's, but since they have less sports, their costs are less too.
