I have been waiting for this.

That is outstanding.

Whoops wrong thread. Will be interesting to see the snow count in DC/nova

I'm starting to see a higher chance of 3-5 inches in Charlotte. One can dream.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

Oh boy if you like snow/inch jokes and you haven't seen this weatherman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8uquD_Fsf0 then you're missing out.

This video is pretty old but its a classic and makes me laugh every time.

Now they're saying 8 to 12 inches around Charlotte. I don't buy it. In the mountains, yeah, but over here? Then followed by 37º on Monday? If so there is going to be some flooding with all the leaves clogging the storm drains.

Yeah, I'm in Mooresville and wondering how long my kids will be out of school...

I'm in Mooresville too. My wife works for CMS in Cornelius and she doesn't want anymore days off after being out for the heavy rain days. It's cutting into her "optional" work days.

My wife works for Novant, and when you are a hospital employee, the inclement weather policy is "get to work"

Same for Dominion Energy. They're all on notice.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

I concur... I work at a Dom Power Station / GPS.

My company has a mandatory 8 hour OSHA course Monday morning in North Carolina, told them yeeeeeeah no

At Leonard Inc here in North Carolina we're giving all employees the day off today so that they can be first in line at the grocery store to clean out the bread and dairy aisles.

Leonard. Duh.

Get all those perishables in case the power goes out!

Actually, you'd be surprised at the number of people who don't think to put their refrigerator contents out in the snow when the power goes out in a snowstorm.

No, I would not be surprised.

Is Leonard Inc hiring? I too am in North Carolina

I haven't paid alot of attention to the weather here in Charlotte, but my family in Bristol keeps saying that they hear that we are going to have more here than in Virginia. Last I saw was 1-4 in Charlotte, 4-8 in the Lake Norman Area, and 8-12 in Statesville, and not beginning until late Saturday night.

If we get 8-12 inches in Charlotte, CMS will be out until February...lol

Update: Already salt on the roads up here in North Charlotte..

I bet there's been salt on the roads in Charlottesville since a week before last Saturday night.

It's Charlottesville. They don't do salt. They do saline solution and spray it all over the road.

I bet there's been salt on the roads in Charlottesville since a week before last Saturday night 2004.

Iredell County section of NCDOT is on it. I couldn't find a main road without solution on it. I know the district that covers Rowan has not put solution down on 150 between Mooresville and Salisbury. But this district covers Davidson County and Lexington and as you know, there are more people over there.

It seems like there's a pretty sizeable contingent of North Charlotte and LKN suburb dwellers here on TKP. We need to do a game watch next season.

YES! We need a Hokie gathering place that isn't Uptown.

My neighbor is a Dist Mgr for BWW. I may have to talk to him about next season...

That would be awesome! Mooresville or Northlake could work. I don't know which would be more convenient to the most people.

They keep saying significant but don't really give an estimate in inches. And as I've experienced already a couple of times, what I get in christiansburg at home, may not be what they get in Roanoke at work, let alone the other three areas we have systems in.

Theres a really small margin for error on this one stay tuned. The gfs may actually win this round, the euro has been trending towards it for a few days and yesterday both stayed static someone could be getting well over a foot of snow

Looks like I'm going into my crawlspace tomorrow to insulate the pipes that froze last year. Seriously, how was the hot water line to the sink closest to the water heater the only line in the house that froze?

You can heat trace the pipe if it's a consistent problem.

I'm considering it. It is PEX so at least the chance of the pipe bursting is minimal.

Hot water freezes faster than cold water.

Mpembe effect.

After a keg fueled argument back in the day about this, we put two ice trays in the freezer. One with hot water, one with cold water. The cold water froze first all three times we tried it.

Without clicking on the link I'll guess it's semantic. He said it freezes faster, not first. Heat might very well transfer from the hot water at a higher rate, at least initially

If a tree falls in Scott Stadium does it make a sound?

Because it is closest to an opening allowing cold air to blow on it. Make sure the crawlspace is thoroughly sealed.

Dude (or Dudette), what are you trying to do, put half the plumbers in the world out of work?

I want the prolong winter storm

I feed off of nightmares

Looks like the Staunton/Charlottesville area may be too far north?

C'ville won't get any, it's too hot in hell for snow

You got that right

I feed off of nightmares

And they didn't break the streak, so Hell has clearly not frozen over.

So any updates on the models and what it means for virginia as a whole? Could realllyyy use a day off next week like monday would be sweet

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

5 to 10 in southwest Virginia

I feed off of nightmares

Central VA gonna get anything? I need chaos to reign supreme to get a day off

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Hit the pace car?

Hit the pace car!

What for?

Because you've hit every other goddamned thing out there, I want you to be perfect!

Spoiler alert, the numbers wont be this bad but Im starting to trust the region of snowfall, expect a foot if youre in this zone

So blacksburg... youre gonna get snow

Long and the short of it is a system is gonna come up from the south and if you haven't seen me give this schpeel before that typically means a larger snowstorm than one just cruising east from the west. This is a dicey one, as I think the accumulation line is really close the blacksburg area. Somebody somewhere is probably gonna get something like 20" of snow but this far out thats tough to say (hell even the day before with snowstorms guessing the bullseye is a friggin crapshoot: See blizzard of 2014 in da burg, most generous forecasts had 9-12")

ANYWHO As im sure you're all wondering outside of blacksburg whose gonna get pummeled?! Well...temperature lines make that tough, im sure as far east as richmond will be seeing some snow and some gross mix, however I'm not entirely sure if its going to be cold enough.

I think regions as far north as Charlottesville might see a few inches of snow but nothing to significant (maybe like 2-3"?) Really the hardest hit region for this system falls in the Appalachia region that is Asheville up to da burg. I think regions like Raleigh will see a wintry mix with some accumulation but I think itll be closer to 4 than some of the 8" of snow people are throwing around. With some lucky SOB region getting like 20 freaking inches of snow. EDIT forgot to mention, Richmond might see some wintry mix and all around just not pleasant weather but again I dont think accumulation will be bad. However if you're heading towards the 757 expect your usual idiot drivers to be even dumber in gross precipitation

So there ya have it. God speed everyone I'll try to stay on this tomorrow and early saturday but I've gotta get a presentation on machine learning tomorrow before going to my wifes work party

my word of advice to all hokies out there

How's Charlotte looking? I keep seeing anywhere from 1-10 inches of snow with a shit ton of ice thrown in. Anymore clarity yet?

It really depends on how much this storm hangs south, as a poster below said the storm track ha shifted south a tad. I'd prepare for the worst until this bad boy is zeroed in

Is Roanoke likely to get same amount as Bburg or a lot less?

Thanks and Godspeed with the presentation and party!

A lot less I'd say, the further north you are the less snow you'll see

Well, as of this morning the GFS has it completely missing Blacksburg and the Euro is showing around 8 inches. I don't think the models know what's going to happen yet. So as my grandpa used to say, "Walk outside if you want to know the weather."

Any updates? Planning on flying out of ROA Sunday morning 🤦🏻‍♂️

Use a plane.
If you don't your arms will get tired.

maybe not what he wants to hear, but you're right. i've had limited success trying to fly out of ROA with anything else

If you're flying American, there is a travel advisory in place for Roanoke. This allows you to proactively change your flights before they get canceled. It is helping me get back to Roanoke Saturday night instead of Sunday from Taiwan.

Just saw the euro shifted north overnight are we tending to follow the GFS or Euro for this storm?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Euro 10 times out of 10

Yeah some of you have stated the models are tracking back north. At this point I'm pretty confident the burg will be seeing like a foot of snow enjoy folks

Keep coming north I could use a nice 3 day weekend snowed in by the woodstove

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Meh... move the timing a couple weeks closer to Christmas and I'd be happy. But, dealing with the cluster in NoVA after a storm like this is rarely fun unless you have no one else to take care of, loads of adult beverages, and a backlog of movies and video games to get through. I only have the beverages part taken care of.

Can I have a Giles update?

I feed off of nightmares

Yes

Ooof

I feed off of nightmares

Sorry for that. I resisted for hours.

Essentially, it'll be the same as Blacksburg.
It started snowing just after 2am and it'll get walloped hard.

Just heard from my friend Dave in Newport. He said they had 6" already and it was still gettin' it. This was about 20 minutes ago.

Update number 2 from Newport its still snowing

I feed off of nightmares

Anybody know if the Basketball game at 1 will be cancelled?

I saw the SC bus roll into town today so I wouldnt think so

Yeah, that was my gut that they arrived yesterday and might as well play. Now I am debating the drive over for it. I think we are going to get some snow here today.

Yeah sc will prolly be here overnight though. They'd be crazy to try to drive home in this. 12" seems a little on the low side for my forecast

where does the visiting basketball team stay when they are in Blacksburg overnight?

Go Hokies

For football it's Roanoke not sure for Basketball.

Ecu would have cancelled weeks ago.

Christiansburg has 7 inches so far w snow band rates exceeding an inch per hour. With temps near 25 its light dry snow, which is better. This isn't stopping any time soon, were gonna get buried. Be safe out there!

In 3 hours since my last post, cburg has added 7 more inches, and its pouring down. We r buried here. Hours to go be4 it lets up, ill try to get some pics. Unreal

I'm going to say we have roughly 15 - 16 inches here in Radford. Measured it earlier at 12 and it has been coming down for 2 hours since then.

Can confirm, christiansburg has 17 inches and its still snowing, though much much lower rate. I think we mite get another inch tonite. I was glad the water density of this snow was low. That helped with the loads on the hot tub cover n my wifes vintage 1967 camper. It was relatively easy to scrap them off.

Damn. Do you think I'll be able to get home in Blacksburg tomorrow from Northern Virginia?

Drove back from Richmond this morning, about a 3hr drive...took me 5hrs. 58 bypass around Danville hadn't been touched. Annnd it's still dumping here.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I can tell you that for Richmond this was a blown forecast. 24 hours ago they said 1-3 maybe. We are sitting on about 6 now and it's dumping ass. We may end up with 10 if it keeps coming down. Work tomorrow is gonna be crazy.

All right. While we're still under a caution, I want you to go back out on that track and hit the pace car.

Excellent tag lines. Robert Duval occasionally shops at my mother's garden store in The Plains. I hope to run into him sometime and tell him "I'm dropping the hammer!"

Wxrisk and a few other independent people were pretty close....most of the local people are pretty awful with snow casts

Put my alcohol in the snow this morning now it's lost in the snow SHIT

According to local news (nbc, WTOP, weather underground), the DMV area is now looking at anywhere from flurries up to 3" tonight.

VDOT was plowing shut all the feeder road entrances to keep 460 and 114 open earlier. It made it challenging to get to and from the basketball game earlier.

Sitting on nine inches in Mechanicsville now and still snowing. Kids are ecstatic, parents are happy we went grocery shopping last night.

Drove from Mechanicsville to Short Pump earlier tonight, took over an hour and a half and involved only a *little* pushing in the apartment complex parking lot.

Remember kids, steer into the skid (for rear or AWD).

I just drove back to Atlee from VCC. The roads are the worst I have ever seen here. Did not get stuck, though because I like to party

Two days ago we were forecasted to get 1 inch in Ashland and now we have over a foot of snow and some how my work will still be open tomorrow

All this talk about snow around the commonwealth and NC and all I've seen are grey skies :( Damn you Northern Virginia
