Hokie baseball

So the Hokies went down to Myrtle Beach and went 1-3 this past weekend. The biggest issue i see is the bullpen 20+ walks and 2 blown leads that's not good y'all might say its just the first weekend they can fix that but they have had walk issues in the past so that is something to keep an eye on

20+ walks for any team on any weekend, is really bad...just solely from the pen? Holy moly that is unacceptable.

I know hopefully they can start keeping them down next weekend in New Orleans

You think it was first game jitters?
Any chance we can make the tournament this year or is it a multi-year rebuild. I remember a few years ago we hosted a regional and I had went to it, that was some fun baseball.

Maybe I feel like this team is better than last year it just the bullpen got to start locking down the fort late in games

5-2 lead going into the bottom of the 8th and lost 6-5 they can't let that happen

I feed off of nightmares

I had seen a few updates and thought they had that last one in the bag, hopefully its just the first game jitters and they can make some noise later in the season and the ACC.

Early season pitching, throwing to get the rust off.

Command issues don't worry me as much in the cold early months

Keep calm, Gobble on

Could be but pitching is typically ahead of hitting early.

Depends. I haven't been able to watch the games so I can't really see the issues.

It is time we got back into contention in baseball. We've fielded some pretty good teams in the past, and it's time to get back to that. It hurts to see loluva absolutely reap mega donor bucks and leapfrog to the top of the hill, but we should at least be able to compete with them in a sport that we used to beat them at pretty regularly.

Yeah, it does make me feel a little better. I personally know the guy who it is named for, and other than loving the 'hoos, he's a damn nice fellow, and a really good fisherman as well. For what it's worth.

The renovation to the stadium and other facilities will help recruiting and we got a man with a fantastic track record in Szefc. I would expect us to rise in the next few years.

10 innings and only one run. That was ugly.

Whit being a baseball guy and preparing to pump a bunch of money into the program, I would think he is hoping to have better results than this.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

I don't know enough about college baseball to judge, but going by records alone I think Szefc's first season will be pretty analogous to Buzz's first season with the basketball team. Trying to scrape by with holdovers from the previous staff's stinker and a couple of your guys as freshmen.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

On top of it:

* South Alabama is currently 11th in the country
* Coastal Carolina is two years removed from winning the NCAA World Series and was a 37-win team last year
* Iowa was a 39-win team last year that played in a Regional
* Radford has won the Big South baseball tournament two of the last three years and won four of the last eight games against Tech

The only "bad" losses so far are to Kansas State and New Orleans (in their home stadium) while the other three losses are to teams that have been better than the Hokies. Since the 2013 NCAA appearance:

Overall record, conference record
21-31-1, 9-21
27-27, 13-16, lost to UNC in ACC tournament
19-36, 6-24
23-32, 9-21

So four losing seasons and one ACC tournament appearance since the last NCAA appearance.

Everything about this year is going to rebuilding. The players. The culture. Even the stadium.

Just going to have to adjust expectations and then see what happens recruiting wise with Whit's injection of funds and Chef's implementation of his way of doing things.

I feel bad for Connor Coward the last 2 games hes only gave up 3 Earn Runs but the offense ain't giving him any run support

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Uva is worst than tech in acc play so far

I feed off of nightmares

Only barely.

VT is 5-7, UVA is 4-8. They got swept by a bad Miami team (12-16) that includes two games decided by one run each, we lost 2-1 to an average or above average Georgia Tech team (17-13). They lost to #17 Duke in Durham 2-1 with a game decided in extra innings, we lost to #10 NC State at home 2-1 with game ending 1-0 in favor of the bad guys.

Of the two series we have in common, UVA won their series against BC at home 2-1 , we lost it in Chestnut Hill 2-1. We beat Pitt 2-1 at home, they lost to Pitt 2-1 up there -- which puts them in last place in the Coastal and one of the bottom three teams in the ACC (the 13th and 14th place teams don't make the tournament).

They're a team that was picked 2nd in the Coastal and probably still have every bit of that capability to make a run but it's a must-win series for both teams.

They're a team that was picked 2nd in the Coastal and probably still have every bit of that capability to make a run but it's a must-win series for both teams.

Then let's see if we can do something about inhibiting that for them.

Hokies get the sweep against Marshall after stealing the second game in Charleston. The first game in Blacksburg was a relatively easy win 11-3. In the second game, though, Marshall took an 8-3 lead heading into the 6th inning before entering full meltdown mode in the 7th inning, giving up 5 runs but getting one back to take a 9-8 lead at the end of the inning. The Hokies managed to tie it up in the top of the 9th on a Marshall error with 2 outs, then got 2 more runs to go up 11-9 before closing it out. Solid win for the Hokies given the circumstances heading into the last third of the game.

You forgot the most important part -- winning the game because of an uncaught third strike followed by a misplayed throw to first to end the 9th inning instead resulting in a 3-run inning for the Hokies.

Did the catcher freak out?

Recruit Prosim

That's where I mentioned the error. I wasn't entirely sure what happened because I was following the game on the Marshall baseball account, and all they said was that were was an error that should have resulted in the final out. Thanks for clarifying what happened! That basically sums up Marshall's entire season in baseball.

uncaught third strike

Who didn't catch it? Did the umpire not call a strike so we got '4' or did the ball get dropped by the catcher? Without seeing it I'm confused.

Run to Win. Pass To Score
Josh Jackson on Ricky Walker - ““He is the captain of this team, He’s the leader. He’s the bell cow, the Pail Holder.“

From what I can tell, since I was listening online and came in after the play had happened (taking care of a family member who just got out of the hospital so was away a good part of the game):

Stoffel had a full count and swung on a pitch that landed in the dirt. Since the ball wasn't caught and it met one of the two requirements of the uncaught third strike rule:

* two outs
* no runner on first

strike three was called but Stoffel wasn't called out, which allowed him to become a base runner. The first baseman must have misplayed the catch since the box score credits him with an error on the play. That let Stoffel get to base safely and allowed Fragale to score from second to tie the game.

Horanski then doubled, scoring Stoffel, Joe Freiday singled to score Horanski, then Mundy singled which advanced Freiday to third. Finally, Menken popped a fly ball to right-center field to end the inning.

Also, by rule, the Marshall pitcher is still awarded a strikeout for Stoffel even though the out itself isn't recorded. It's the only way a pitcher can get four (or more) strikeouts in an inning.

Outside of the exhibition games, no MLB pitcher has ever recorded five strikeouts in an inning but four strikeouts in an inning has happened 87 times, the last being in August 2017.

This is really hard for me to follow. Would I be right if I guessed the second time Fragale scored you meant to say Stoffel?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Yeah, Sorry. Meant Stoffel.

If I can summarize:

Top 9, Stoffel at bat. 3-2 count with 2 outs. Fragale on 2nd.
* Stoffel gets called strike 3, but ball is in the dirt so not called out by Baseball Rules 5.05 and 5.09
* Stoffel runs to first per above rule, first baseman commits a fielding error trying to catch the ball
* Fragale scores from the above error, tying the game at 9-9
* Tech goes on to score two more runs before the top half of the inning finally ends.

Had the fielding error not occurred or the catcher been able to cleanly catch the strike, the game would have ended with Marshall winning 9-8

To explain a little further, if one of the following conditions is met:

* there's no runner on first base
* there's two outs in the inning

the catcher must cleanly catch the ball on strike three for a batter to be out. If the catcher doesn't catch the ball for any reason (batter swung on a ball that lands in the dirt, catcher drops the ball, catcher simply misses the catch) then a strikeout is still recorded but the batter becomes a base runner and must be forced out or tagged out.

If there's 0-1 outs and a runner already on first base, then the batter is out.

The worst situation to get an uncaught strike three with two outs is bases loaded because all the catcher has to do is pick up the ball and make it to home play before the runner at third base reaches.

uncaught third strike would be the catcher missing the pitch or dropping it.

Or first base not catching a well thrown ball

On the up side, we won last night. Also on the up side, the new ballpark is really shaping up well. The grandstands and the upscale options of tables and suites is a huge upgrade, and the fact that you can now buy burgers and beer is like the cherry on top. Now, we gotta figure out how to get back to winning more. We haven't had a winning season since 2013, I think, so we have to hope the new park and the new coach can help with recruiting.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I would have gone to many more baseball games if they were serving beer.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

There was beer available at all of the games I attended, as much as you wanted to bring to the hill. Those were fun times, there was a left handed power hitter who hit a ton of HRs up on that hill.

In Fuente we trust

Yeah, we used to sit on the hill and quaff openly. Then, one year, a loluva visit prompted a little rowdiness in the crowd and the next game I went to, there were "officials" checking coolers and that was the end of open drinking on the hill. Before English Field times, the "fun" crowd gathered beyond the outfield and openly partied there. I once saw the entire UVA team, down to the ballboy, get tossed out of the game there for asshattery while we were pasting them. For whatever reason, though, the powers that be used to ignore open drinking on the hill, and would route you out quietly from the stands if you got bold enough to move over with a beer in hand.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Maryland had 31 straight losing seasons before Szefc took over. They then proceeded to win 180 games while he was there. Might take a few years to get it to that level but I think he will turn VT around and get them back to winning sooner rather than later.

Well, I hope he does bring us back to relevance in the ACC. Today, we lost our 9th 1 run game at Notre Dame in extra innings. Their celebration was effusive, to put it mildly.
