Shane Beamer leaving UGA for Assistant Head coaching job at Oklahoma.

I know many Hokie fans don't like Shane but he has steadily been climbing the ranks and is given lots of praise at every stop by coaches.

Glad to see Shane continue to climb up the ladder. Nothing but the best of luck to him!

Yep I imagine he will continue to bounce around schools as he continues his ascent.

I heard that the beat reporter who broke the story found this on the curb outside Shane's house:

That's a pretty solid offensive mind to be gameplanning with. Hopefully he can parlay this into a full-on OC job at a good program somewhere in the future.

I bet he gets a HC job in next three years.

If he adopts Lincoln Riley's offensive system and Lincoln Riley continues to be successful at Oklahoma, I think you could be very right.

Why don't lots of Hokie fans like him? I feel like I'm missing something. Seems like this guy could be a candidate for our future after Fuente, but from what I'm gathering people wouldn't want that.

When he was RB coach and our RBs weren't lighting it up, there was a small-but-loud group of hokie fans that just cried nepotism and that he wasn't qualified and that if he didn't hold our running game back we'd be elite.

He filled some huge shoes Billy left behind. Actually now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder how much Billy's departure had to do with our dip in 2012-2015.

there was a small-but-loud group of hokie fans that just cried nepotism and that he wasn't qualified

Part of this was also because he was given the title 'Associate Head Coach' right when getting here. He was sort of a square peg in a round whole, brought in to recruit, and used as a running back's coach since that was really the only roster position at the time. It was also a bit of a weird situation that Shane kept his job when all of the other offense staff were replaced. It probably wasn't the ideal situation for his career or coaching staff. Probably doesn't get the job if he's not Frank's kid (even with his history as a player).

All that said, I don't think Shane was a failed coach by any stretch. Room to improve? Sure. He'll have a fine career, and might be the most successful Head Coach off Frank's coaching tree.

Twitter me

I can't help but think that RB duties are incredibly different from HC duties.

For the pay differential between a player stipend and a head coach, I would hope so. /s
Also, I believe Lil'Beamer was a LS, not a RB. also /s but a good transition to these relevant questions.

Is the LS really a D1 athlete? Do the rest of the team consider them differently than other position players? and finally, are some position players more likely to want to coach for their alma than players at other positions?

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I have considered the LS lower than the kicker in team hierarchy. At least I know who the kicker is.

I get your point, but if the tiniest spring in the watch fails, it doesn't keep time. Pretty important position when it's time to kick, and that happens often enough to pay attention to getting it right. To me, if you play, you play, and if he wasn't good enough to play, he wouldn't have been playing, regardless of who he was.

RB production during his tenure was unimpressive, which a lot of people blamed Shane for.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I mainly just had a problem with his RB rotation, which therefore affected the production of the group. Felt like he was always way too loyal to JC Coleman when there were better backs sitting on the bench.

Supposedly he was the coach that accepted the Wakeyleaks information as well.

Come to Blacksburg and see what the Hokie Pokie is really all about

He was. UGA fined him $25k, but he denied giving any info to players or coaches.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

Guess he was SEC ready then :D

Let's be honest, he probably thought it was a joke and tossed the folder in the trash.

His side of the story was that his friend called and gave him the Wakeyleak info, but he didn't pass it forward. However, the mistake he made was that he didn't turn the buddy in to someone. He just kept it to himself, which is honorable in the hood or when you are a kid. But in big time college football, it is a definite no-no.

I guess this raises the debate: would it be better for his career to get a HC job at some directional/G5 school, or an OC job at a P5 school?

I think OC is a better path or the one most used but there are coaches out there who weren't an OC or DC.

Yeah, I agree. And for some reason now the idea I have in my head is that Shane is destined to take over for Scottie Montgomery once he inevitably gets canned.

but there are coaches out there who weren't an OC or DC.

G5 if you light it up, but could also be the end of the road if you don't. OC at a P5 if you want something stable and secure.

I think he's more likely to get an HC job than OC. He's coached TE's and RB's, but most of his success has been in special teams and recruiting. He'll learn a lot about offense from Riley, but I don't see him getting (or ever wanting) play calling responsibilities.

Yep. and dare I say our running backs have not been lighting the world on fire since he left.

True enough, but we haven't had anything close to resembling a David Wilson. The drop off actually began under Shane, but it was a shortcoming in recruiting, not coaching.

Recruiting and injuries. And arguably more of the latter.

Good for Shane. He continues to get good jobs at big schools. He loves VT and was a class guy anytime I ever interacted with him- total class. For me, it was that our RB rotation made little-to-no sense. It seemed like our guys would get pulled as soon as they were getting into rhythm.

Fun story time. So as many of yall know, my sister married into some diehard, and I mean diefuckinghard, UVA fans. Super good people, just got lost somewhere along the way.

Well, my brother in law's cousin somehow someway got ahold to Shane's cell number while he was still a coach at Tech and took it upon himself to leave some voicemails for Shane, to try and "rattle his cage" if you will.
This went on for a few weeks and Shane became a little annoyed. The cousin woke up one morning to voicemail from none other than Shane Beamer.

Went a little something like this: "Morning *cousin*, Shane Beamer. It's 4am. I get up at 4 every day and head into the office to prepare to win. Seeing you didn't pick up, I'm assuming you're still sound asleep. While I can appreciate your unflinching love for UVA, this is getting old. I have over 20k followers on twitter who would live nothing more than to get your number. Have a good day. Go Hokies!"

I couldn't agree more. I went to school in West Virginia and grew up in Virginia. The mountains are beautiful but those scenic overlooks didn't spray paint themselves and I cant count the number of old washing machines, fridges, cars etc...that people just roll off a mountain when they are done with them.

Along those same lines, my friend who lives in Christiansburg right now was at the dry cleaners in Blacksburg last spring. She's picking up her stuff and while the lady is in the back finding her clothes my friend looks down at the counter and sees a stack of claim tickets. On top is (edited for accuracy) Justin Fuente with a cell #. She took out her phone really quick and snapped a picture.

So this past season when we were at games together and we were annoyed at the on field results, we always joked about calling the cell number and saying RUN THE DANG BALL JUSTIN! a la Blind Side.

I would not trust drunk me with those digits.

Just wait until Justine Fuente, sophomore in Biology @VT, an one-time unfortunate user of a Blacksburg dry cleaning service to get the stains out of her formals dress, starts getting drunken phone calls in the post-game hours from angry VT fans...

Those angry callers will probably be wondering why Justine brought in the backup quarterback, who's never thrown a pass, on 4th and short in the redzone and tried to run the QB. Or passing deep, on 3rd and 4th and 1 with a minute to go, down 6. WHY NOT RUN FOR THE FIRST DOWN JUSTINE!!!

My house walls were very lucky to avoid a few more fist holes during that cutesy shit against GT!

Or more likely, why she did not.

My question is why is he dropping off his own dry cleaning? He totally seems like a guy that would be fine with it, but it seems like something a GA would do. Who knows, maybe a GA did drop them off put put Justin's name so it would get extra special treatment.

His wife's name is Jenny. Perhaps she dropped off the dry cleaning?

I'd love to see Shane back at VT as head coach one day, after a long string of successful coaching jobs. It will be a pretty tough gig to get after Fuente gets a string of national championships, though.

I wish Shane all the success in the world.

Fuente's 41 and Beamer is 40. Something drastic would have to occur for that to happen.

I like Shane and would love to see him back at Tech, but not at the expense of Fuente leaving, assuming the trajectory continues upward.

Yeah, I was just being nice.

I'd prefer Fuente to make VT his own, and have a successful career here.

I still have the image of baby beamer in my mind. Also I guess I think of Fuente as being a bit older.

He deserves all the success he's worked for and earned. Good on 'im.

I went to high school with Shane back when Blacksburg High was still the Indians. Still can't believe they caved and changed their name. He'd a good dude. I really hope he does well in Oklahoma. I would imagine by virtue of name value alone he gets a look as an OC or G5 head coach. Charlie Weis' progeny managed it. Good luck to Shane.

I was a sophomore at BHS back in 2002 ('03?) when the mascot change took place. Students submitted their recommendations, and a vote was cast. The finalists that I can remember were the Blazers, Bruins, and having no mascot, just being known simply as Blacksburg High School, which was a way of saying that no mascot could ever replace the Indian. I still believe my recommendation, the Blacksburg Blue Ridgers, was far superior to any other due to its precise geographical identity, uniqueness, and how eloquently it rolls off of the tongue.

I remember the Indians won the first round of student recommendations and the administration promptly threw it out.

Christiansburg once had an initiative (early 90's?) to change both the school name & mascot to the "Holmes Highrollers".

I'm glad that failed.

Dabo proved you don't have to have experience with offense or defense coordinating to be a very successful head coach, and it looks like Shane might be on that same path. Good on him, hope it works, and I think he will be a great head coach down the line. We would be lucky to have him leading our program should Fuente move on.

No sarc required, that was my thought on this whole thing. I think if most had to put money on the jobs that Fuente would leave VT for, most would bet OK. I would think that Whit would pursue a more proven coach rather than a P5 coordinator, but who knows how things will play out with Shane and OK over the next couple years.

I'm not so sure about Shane returning to VT, at least with this administration. I don't think it was a coincidence that he was not retained by the current staff.

Wakeyleaks was really not a good look. His RB rotation, in my opinion, was an attempt to appease everyone instead of making big boy decisions. He just seemed a little too chummy chummy with the players.

And then, of course, Richmond recruiting...was not going great.

And he's not Dabo.

And he's not Dabo.

And we thank God everyday, I am not sure I could take two Dabo's running around.

Most new coaches don't retain the existing staff. The fact that Fuente retained 4 members of a previous staff is far from the norm. Also awfully big leap to assume Shane would have stayed if he had been offered. His base salary at UGA was 300k, while it was 252k in 2015 with Tech, so he got pretty good bump in pay going to UGA.

And lets be honest, it was better for his career to move away and continue to do good coaching. He was going to be underfoot under Fuente if he had been offered to stay as the son of the old coach. How often was Georgia's special teams talked about this year?

As much as I believe Shane would love be back "home", I would be more than a little surprised if he were to become the big whistle here. Not only would he need to build a track record, and have the current coach leave, but the timing for two would have to work out. Then he would have to be the best guy for the job in the AD's opinion. There will always be those who will cry that he did not earn it fairly and be extra harsh in their judgements, like there were when he was RB coach here, and some of those could be influential donors. Finally, would he want to be back under dad's shadow after going out and earning it on his own?
